President’s Welcome speech at the Jubilee Luncheon
March 2, 2011
Your Majesty, Your Excellencies, Mrs Reinfeldt, Honoured Guests, dear mem-
bers and friends. My name is Kanthi Beck, and I am the President of the International Women’s Club of Stockholm. It is a great honour and pleasure for me to
welcome you all to our Club’s 50th Anniversary Jubilee Luncheon.
I would like to extend a special welcome to Her Majesty Queen Silvia for honouring us on this memorable day in the history of the International Women’s
Club.
Our patron H.R.H. Princess Lilian is unable to be with us today and we miss her
deeply.
On behalf of our members, may I ask Baroness Palmstierna to convey our very
best wishes to H.RH. Princess Lilian.
It is quite an achievement for the IWC to reach its half century milestone. The
club has welcomed ladies of many nationalities during these past 50 years in a
spirit of friendship and goodwill.
I should like say a few words about our club’s history.
50 years
ago, in 1961, nine ladies started to meet at each other’s homes for
luncheons and to help overcome that feeling of being lost so far away from
home. Everything was new, and settling in a new country, for a few months or
for many years, is always a challenge.
At their meetings those nine ladies exchanged ideas about how to help newcomers to Stockholm. How about a club? And so the International Women’s Club
was born.
Word about the new club spread quickly. New arrivals in international circles
joined. Within a few months the IWC had more than a hundred members. An
Executive Board was formed and various positions were taken by volunteers.
Several activity groups were created. Luncheons, coffee mornings, afternoon
teas and cocktail gatherings became very popular; newcomers to Stockholm no
longer needed to feel alone.
Over the years, the IWC has welcomed hundreds of members of many different
nationalities. Today we have members from 6o different countries. The Club
provides a home away from home, and a chance to form many new friendships.
Some newcomers have stayed in Sweden and become seniors; many others came
5
and then went back home or moved elsewhere, but they formed life-long friendships and took pleasant memories of IWC Stockholm with them.
The IWC provides a platform to help newcomers settle down and acclimatise; to
get to know the new environment in which they have to live for a while.
I should also like to mention how Philanthropy became another strong pillar of
the club.
At the first club luncheon in 1961, the speaker was a teacher from Tomteboda
Blind School, a boarding school for blind children in Sweden. As a result of her
speech, the IWC decided to help these children, and soon Philanthropy evolved
into a main pillar of the IWC.
At an early stage in the life of the Club, members’ husbands became supporters
of the IWC and its philanthropic activities.
A first fashion show was organised at the residence of the American Ambassador
and the haute couture dresses were flown all the way from New York to Stockholm by Pan American Airways to help the blind school. The Guest of Honour
was HRH Princess Christina. The event raised enough money to buy a mini van
for the blind children so that they could go on more outings. This was one of the
club’s most successful philanthropic events.
During the past 50 years the IWC has raised millions of kronor for countless
projects in many different countries. All of this has been possible because the
members of the IWC contribute their time and energy entirely on a voluntary
basis, and it is also due to the support of the Royal family, numerous embassies
and companies, and of course our members.
For our 50th anniversary year, the philanthropic theme has been Children of the
World.
The luncheon to celebrate our Golden Jubilee is our fourth and final Children of
the World project – a fundraiser for World Childhood Foundation, which was set
up by Her Majesty Queen Silvia. We are indeed grateful to make our contribution,
however small, to such a worthy cause.
Ms Anna de Geer, deputy secretary general of the Childhood Foundation, will
brief us about its work.
Today I would like to extend my especial thanks to the sponsors of this Jubilee
Luncheon:
The Grand Hotel, H.E. Dr Joachim Rücker the German Ambassador, H.E Mrs.
Barbra Bridge, the New Zealand Ambassador for sponsoring wine and Mr Marc
6
Gibello for sponsoring champagne for this event. Additionally Lundin Petroleum
and the Royal Thai Embassy made very generous donations to the Childhood
Foundation.
Thank you also to many Airlines and Travel Agencies for donating valuable gift
vouchers for the auction and lotteries to help raise funds for Childhood Foundation. They are: Travel Beyond, Lotus Travel, Etihad Airways, Indian Specialisten,
Qatar Airways, Royal Thai Airways and Mrs Fifi Stehag of Revive Kliniken, and
many other companies and individuals. Many, many thanks to all of you.
I should also like to thank the members of the IWC’s Executive Board and all our
other members who have so generously helped to organise this event. Mrs Kjerstin Dellert who intended to be with us, was prevented by ill health from coming,
but we are very pleased and thankful to Mrs Alexandra Charles for stepping in at
short notice to take over as MC.
On behalf of the IWC, I would also like to extend our gratitude to the performers:
Lilla Akademien, Nkosazna Dimande, Anuska Larsson, Josefin Bouler, Franck
Bouler, Sylvia Wrethammar and Linnea Grönberg. And to Mr Peder Lamm, who
helped us by running our auction. Many thanks.
Greetings and congratulations have been received from overseas IWCs and Past
Presidents who are abroad. A very special greeting has been sent by one of our
devoted Past Presidents, Ingagreta Håkansson, who regrets very much that she is
unable be with us today.
I would especially like to thank those Presidents of sister clubs abroad who have
joined us here today. Nor should we forget the many Embassies that could not be
with us today but have made donations.
And also a very special word of thanks to the Ambassadors who are with us
today representing 24 countries. We are grateful that you have taken time to be
with us and represent your country.
Last but not least, the IWC would not have reached its Golden Anniversary
without the hard work and efforts of our Past Presidents and other Board Members. Thank you all. There is one other key figure in the history of the IWC who
we should mention: one of the Club’s founding mothers who is still living in
Stockholm and who is with us today, Sissi Rasmussen. Welcome and congratulations.
Wishing our dear IWC of Stockholm, a happy 50th Anniversary!
Thank you all for coming, and I wish you a pleasant afternoon.

Susanna Popova is a journalist and author with a Fil. Mag. in Psychology. Her
recent book, published in 2010 “Vårt
Bröllop”, was an exclusive encounter
at the Royal Palace with the Bernadotte
family prior to the Royal wedding in
2010. Susanna’s close-up, behind-thescenes account of the preparations for
the wedding, which she delivered at the
IWC luncheon on April 12, 2011, was
unique and exclusive.
Well-known pianist Staffan
Scheja and talented young
violinist Hugo Ticciati gave a
recital at the IWC’s 50th Anniversary Valentine luncheon on
February 14, 2011. The guest
of honour at the accompanying
lunch was the Mayor of Stockholm City, Margareta Björk.
Stina Lundberg Dabrowski was our
guest speaker on September 7, 2010.
This award-winning Swedish journalist
delivered a facinating talk on: “Women
of the world, who are they?”.
Here she reminisced about some of
her most interesting meetings, with
the women she has interviewed over
the years while working for Swedish
television.

The International Women’s Club of Stockholm
Name
IWC stands for The International Women’s Club. The IWC has members of more
than 60 nationalities. Since 1982 we have had the honour of having Her Royal Highness
Princess Lilian, Duchess of Halland, as our club’s patron.
Purpose
The club’s purpose is to welcome newcomers to Stockholm and provide them with
a platform for creating networks among the foreign and local communities. The other major activity is helping the needy internationally and locally whenever we can.
Every year the club organises three charity events in October, December and March.
These charities are carefully chosen by the IWC’s Executive Board. The IWC’s philanthropic activities receive kind and generous support from the Swedish Royal family, Embassies and many companies.
Membership
As the IWC has such a worthwhile purpose many ladies would like to join when they
arrive in Stockholm and find out what it does. The IWC has a set of rules as to who is
eligible to become a member, and applicants need to be sponsored by a member and
approved by the Executive Board.
Running of the club
The International Women’s Club has been administered on an entirely voluntary basis
by its members since its formation in 1961. The Executive Board has 11 members:
President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Bulletin Editor, Philanthropic Chair,
Programme Chair, Membership Chair, Hostess Chair, Tours Chair and Social Activities
Chair. We also have a representative for International activities, the International Coordinator. Separate from the Executive board is the Nominating committee whose role
is to ensure the continuity of Board membership needed for a smoothly running club.
Club’s Motto
50 years have passed and the IWC has reached its Golden Anniversary by sharing
Friendship and Goodwill. Each and every member is aware of the IWC’s conditions
when they are welcomed as a new member. The IWC is a social club with no religious
or political affiliations. With its motto of Friendship and Goodwill to all, the International Women’s Club has created a peaceful and harmonious meeting place for its
members and everyone who joins in our activities.
Happy 50th Anniversary to the IWC!
and thank you to all past Presidents and present and past board members, Committee members and IWC members, you are the pride of the IWC.
