here, I’m sitting
out in our
new
gazebo,
thinking about the momentous
past year as your Commodore.
Emotions are mixed, as you
would expect. On the one hand,
I won’t have to make up any
more excuses for missing Judy
Engberg’s Poopdeck deadline for
my “commodore message.” On
the other, I have enjoyed penning
these monthly conversations
and sharing behind-the-scenes
operations of the Club with you. The
Crosthwait
Memorial
Fishing Tournament 2011 is
history now, but it never ceases to
amaze me how a really first class
event that you’d think was as good
as it gets, just keeps getting better.
True, some monster fish were
weighed in, but the real story is
the record that was set this year for
the Crosthwait scholarship fund.
Final tally is not complete at this
writing, but it looks like $7,000$10,000 will be available to help
our own Junior Angler tournament
contestants pay for college. The
Fly Fishing tournament was also
a big hit and destined to become
a part of the Crosthwait tradition.
Chairman Mike Reeves says the
sponsor has committed resources
for the next three years.
Several
noteworthy
items
for your calendar: June 18th19th -- The Firefighters’ Fishing
Tournament, now in its fourth
year, benefits the Children’s Burn
Foundation of Florida and is put
on here at BYC by Firefighter Eric
Nichols, along with a committee
of BYC members. Money raised
sends youngsters who have
suffered severe burns to a special
camp just for them. So far, the
event has raised over $20,000 for
the Foundation and gets bigger
every year.
June 25th: The Change of Watch,
when I turn the Commodore
ensign over to Rick Shaurette,
Evan Guido moves up to Vice
Commodore and we elevate Denise
Cabanillas to Rear Commodore.
All the newly elected Directors
will take office, as well. Then we
dance until the wee small hours.
The following night will be the Big
Bang when the Club blows off a
barge-load of fireworks to the ohs
and ahs of members, their families
and their guests.
The past year has been one of
personal growth to me, as well
… not the least of which is the
30 pounds gained from spending
so much time at the Club. The
unwanted weight will go away,
(per orders from Aimee), but the
enriching experience of getting to
know so many of our members
and visiting other clubs across
Florida will stay forever in my
mind.
I also greatly relished the
healthy give and take at every
Board Meeting when Directors
exchanged ideas and endlessly
debated potential benefits to the
Club with wisdom and passion.
Not a Yes Man among them …
and rarely was there a unanimous
vote.

By all measures, the 20102011 year has been excellent:
Memberships are up dramatically,
financials look healthy, the Club
and grounds are well maintained,
food service grows better by
the day. While I am happy to
report these hard-earned results,
I certainly can’t take credit for
them. For the last 12 months, I
enjoyed the enviable position of
having a strong Executive Board to
lean on and a group of talented,
smart-thinking Directors who
made my job a whole lot easier.
Endless thanks are due to all of
them for selflessly sharing their
time and their skills in the effort
to make Bradenton Yacht Club a
premiere gathering place for all
of us who love being in, on and
near the water. Their efforts will
continue to pay big dividends for
years to come.

As I type this, the hullabaloo
that is the Crosthwait Fishing
Tournament is happening all
around me. Tents are up in the
parking lot, the tables and chairs
are being set up, and the kitchen is preparing to
feed the masses of fisher folk. All of this means that
spring is leaving, and summer is right around the
corner! As we head into this time of year, the BYC
Long Wall and the pool area will be busy. We ask your
indulgences as we host several fishing tournaments,
host some Cruise-ins from other clubs, and see a
general increase of boat traffic and pool use with the
warmer weather.
Many of you know about the blue area on the
Long Wall. For those that don’t, the end of the long
wall closest to the ramp has been painted with a blue
stripe. This “blue area” is for loading, unloading and
BYC Member drop in-boat traffic only. The Blue Area
will be held for BYC Members on a first come first
served basis, not as a reservation, and is not available
for overnight docking. Members using the Blue Area
must adhere to all Dock Rules and Regulations,
including the requirement to check in with the dock
staff to let them know whose boat is there and where
they will be while using the Club. The only exception
to the rule is when the Club has a legitimate booked
regatta, or fishing tournament. Cruise-ins from other
clubs will not be allowed to use the Blue Area. We do
ask that members use the blue area judiciously, as
it is finite in size. Even if the wall looks full, call the
Dockmaster; we may have open slips that you can
use for the day.
This is also a great time to re-familiarize yourself
with the BYC Pool rules. They are in the back of
the roster and on our website. The pool is for BYC
Members and your guests, FCYC members and for
visiting yachtsmen from the Yachting Club of America. We ask that all members speak to their children, who
are old enough to use the pool on their own, about
their responsibilities and the repercussions which
may occur if they misuse their privileges. All BYC
Members using the pool must have a membership
card. We offer dependant cards in the office, for your
children. As you might guess, our biggest concern is
the safety and well being of all people using the pool. There are diving board rules that must be adhered to. This is a must; there will be very little tolerance for
misuse of this amenity. We are one of the few clubs
that has a diving board, and we do not want to see
anyone get hurt.

We have several dry slips available for rent, and
the price is right! It is only $60.17 including tax per
month, per boat and you are right here at the BYC. Having a dry slip here provides you easy access to the
water, fuel, and washing of your boat. The fenced-in
dry slips can handle boats 30’ in length, and our west
basin dry slips will accommodate boats based on the
Basin Committee’s discretion. For more information,
contact our Dockmaster Brent at 941-374-2310.
We have launched our new wine list, and we are
excited for you try our new wines. There is also a
new Club offering there, “Wine Corkage”. If you do
not see a bottle of wine on our wine list that excites
you or piques your curiosity, please feel free to
bring a bottle of your favorite wine (750 ml) from
your cellar, and we will gladly open it for you for a
nominal charge of $12 for whites, $20 for reds. If
bringing multiple bottles, a corkage charge will be
added to your check for each bottle opened. This is
a great way to enjoy high end wines from your cellar
without a full restaurant mark up.
As mentioned in my last month’s article, we have
an even larger list of Country Clubs for the BYC
Summer Golf Reciprocal Program. This reciprocal
list includes Bradenton Country Club, River
Wilderness Golf & Country Club, Palm-Aire Country
Club, Misty Creek Country Club, University Park
Country Club, The Meadows Country Club, St. Pete
Country Club, Stoneybrook Golf & Country Club,
Tara Golf & Country Club, Pasadena Yacht & Country
Club (Annual), Isla del Sol Yacht & Country Club
(Annual), and Venice Golf & Country Club. New this
year, we have a Social Reciprocal at the Oaks Country
Club for any of our members who are down that
way! Our Reciprocal agreement with these clubs is
from May to October, unless otherwise noted. Prices
for golf and contact phone numbers can all be found
on our website. Enjoy the pending summer, enjoy
your Club, enjoy the wonderful life we have been
afforded!

We are moving our Texas Hold-Em out

Entertainment
On June 18th, the BYC is going
Italian. Joe Spinnelli will be
entertaining us for our LaDolce Vita
evening. We will be serenaded with
some beautiful Italian music as Joe is accompanied
by the Sarasota Mandolin Orchestra. Thank you,
Mary Jo Smith, for hosting this event and for helping
to bring something special to the Club for all of us
to enjoy. Saturday, June 25th, we are welcoming our new
Commodore, Rick Shaurette, and his crew while we
say goodbye to the old. The band for the evening is
Jennifer Leigh and her New Digs. It will be an elegant
event and the attire is club formal. Sunday, June 26th, is the Big Bang. We end the
weekend festivities with a magnificent “light up the
sky” fireworks display. It’s a weekend to get ready for
and be at the BYC. It has been a year since I stepped into this role
and I have enjoyed every moment. I am now starting

another year and the planning has already begun. It
will be a phenomenal year as we learn from the past
and bring to the Club some fresh ideas and keep a
few of the standards. However, this committee is not
one or two people but a group of people who have
made this year so successful. I want to thank Rick and
Sydney Shaurette, Mary Jo and Brian Smith, Pam and
Phil Burghardt, Sean and Cindy Rhategan, Karen and
Carl Patton, Kim Bailey, Laurie Mailloux, Gail Toledo,
Nancy Christian, Randy and Pauldie Howrigan and
Ken Nyhus. Thank you Whitney Tyson and the BYC
staff for always going that extra step to make every
event so special. A special thanks and a bunch of luck
to Armand Amar, a great husband and friend who at
this writing is getting ready for back surgery. I also

Fleet Captain Sailing
On Sunday, April 17, the
sailboat racing fleet held BYC’s
annual “Ladies at the Helm Event”.
Eight sailboats participated in the
event. The all women crew from
Caliente selected a five mile course that provided
a perfect mix of upwind and downwind spinnaker
runs to test the contestants on their overall sailing
abilities. The results proved this to be a fairly tight racing
event, with the final boat arriving over the finish line
less than twelve minutes behind the first boat on
handicap adjusted time. The overall winner was “Lil
Gringo” followed by “Mischief” (Karen Armstrong),
who finished in second place and “Blackstar”
(Linda Berger) finishing in third. Swamp Rabbit was
skippered by Denise Berte. Caliente was skippered
by Susan Tibbets with Joan Richey as jib person.
The first place win by “Lil Gringo” was truly
newsworthy since the boat was skippered by Hannah
Catalino, a remarkably capable fourteen year old
sailor out of the Manatee River Pram Association. The Results:

NOTE: The third place win by Cat Tastrophe was
disallowed after the skipper underwent DNA
testing. Several years ago, after a ten year hiatus from
sailboat racing, I decided to get back to the racing
scene. At that time, I met Neil Jacques and had
the opportunity to crew on his J 24 Caliente. Over
the next several months, I began to meet many of
the sailing fleet’s members during our after racing
socials. During this period, one particular member
began to stand out from the crowd. This “stand out” person and I soon became
romantically entwined. Our relationship has
flourished over the past four years. On May 7, I am
very happy to say that Elizabeth Oakey and I were
married in BYC’s new gazebo. Thank you, Great
Mates. The ceremony which was officiated by Ken
Nyhus ended with a small dinner party held at the
Club. Special thanks to Barbara Marcin who was kind
enough to provide roses for the event from her
garden and John Marcin who loaned me his BYC
tie for the occasion. Also special thanks to Joan
Richey, Connie and Jeff Walden for decorating the
gazebo. Betsy and I look forward to spending our
future together amongst the friends we have made at

Fleet Captain Power
The Power Fleet cast off for
nearby Sarasota YC for the April
cruise. This well attended event
saw Arnie & Wanda Abitablio, Ray
& Elayne Barr, Bob & Jill Brown,
Bob & Ann Hawkins, Phil & Mary Letourneau, Dan &
Maria Lowe, Bob & Annette Luscombe, Arni & Cheryl
Nashbar, Fred & Mary Smith, Carl & Paula Tembicki,
and Bob & Pat Wilson come by sea. Attending by
land were Paul & Sandra Cutcliffe, George & Ann
Hartmann, Roy & Jackie Woolf, and Maureen and I
with Maureen’s sister Jeannie Haggerty. The Friday night buffet returned to SYC and most
attendees enjoyed this excellent tradition. A few of
the health conscious decided on menu items, while
the rest of us indulged in the unlimited dessert and
ice cream table. Dancing in the lounge ensued while
others ventured out to the quiet of the mezzanine for
cocktails and conversation.
Saturday morning saw the cruisers partake of a
delightful, dockside potluck breakfast. Actress Geena
Davis was at the club and the crew was hoping she

Larry Stanczak would come over and sing happy birthday to Annette
Luscombe and Bob Hawkins, but she failed to show. So Mary Letourneau brought over a stuffed bear that
sang the Beatles version to the duo. Afterwards, some
attended the boat show at Marina Jack and others
whipped out the charge cards at St. Armand’s shops. Most of the crew departed Sunday, but the Abitablio’s
and Brown’s stayed another night. Thank you to Bob & Pat Wilson for leading this
cruise. They are also led the May extended cruise; it
is wonderful to have great crew mates.
Boating Etiquette when Docking
Some cruisers asked me to issue this reminder: When
we are cruising, we often have a number of vessels
entering port at the same time. Rather than having
the dock hands hook up power, water, TV and the
like, once you are secure at the dock let them move
on to bring in the other vessels that are orbiting,
waiting for a hand. Better yet, help bring in the other
vessels, a courtesy taught to me early in my Club days
by PC Dave Wilson. We are crew mates and a team!

In his own words, a note
from Evan Guido: Dear Mike,
“Attached are a few of the tarpon
photos. We landed the monsters! Caught right under the Skyway
Bridge. I was fishing with clients if that makes
anyone feel better. Used cast netted thread fin bait
on a free line and threw plenty of chum to keep the
fish interested in the stern of our boat. Caught on
medium sized rods with bait casting reels using 40lb

You are hearing it here first before the Bradenton
Herald spends millions for the copyrighted story. Recently the BYC held a two party dual gender rear
commodore election and a volatile vote over the
distribution of untold riches. Let me set the stage
for you. Commodore is a position of enormous
unlimited power and there is virtual certainty of an
enormously lucrative book deal post office. Billions
are spent campaigning and political careers are made
and lost. The money vote is complicated. There is a
group within the club akin to the Templar clan of
old who lay down enigmatic long range plans. They
operate under the guise of a planning committee
and their plan was to ask membership for a plan so
that the Club can plan to implement a well planned
plan. The day of the meeting, I prepared for the worst
wearing my Kevlar bullet proof underwear under my
undercover disguise. Yes, that old man with bad breath
and hopelessly dated attire taking notes was me. My
expectations ran high. These votes were a guaranteed

newsworthy Pulitzer potential powder keg that
would surely top Watergate. Upon slyly entering the
Club, the first thing noticeable was a complete lack
of security. No x-ray machines, pat downs, detection
dogs and no security guard with a 2nd grade education
who doesn’t speak English. There were even open
containers of liquid carried about right out in plain
sight. First was the election of rear commodore. The
votes were counted - new commodore announced
- the candidates congratulated and thanked one
another – and sat down with smiles. After seeing
this display, both the Fox & CNN reporters left in
search of mayhem elsewhere. Next came the vote
about money and the infamous plan. Once again
utter disappointment. Clearly these members do not
watch C span or understand our habitual adversarial
legislative process. There can be no room for civility
or disagreeing agreeably – we might as well revert back
to having a benevolent monarchy. Folks on opposing
sides of the question were thanking each other for
effort and caring! It was disgustingly more like the
Hallmark Channel than 60 Minutes. Sorry folks, no
juicy story here but there is hope. In a couple years,
there will be the a 2nd lady commodore. Will this
precarious feminine trend continue? Are bar stools
to be recovered in pink? Will the urinals be replaced
with stalls? With reckless abandon and disregard for
facts, I will find you the answers to these and other
irrelevant questions – yours on the scene, Spike.

Jenifer is a “Jersey Girl”
who moved to Sarasota
about seven years ago,
buying her first house last
June. She brings to the
BYC an extensive food
and beverage, banquet, and hospitality background,
working in Country Clubs and Atlantic City’s Trump
Marina and Borgata Hotel and Casino as Beverage
Manager. She decided to transfer to accounting six years
ago and loves the transition. Jenifer enjoys assisting
members with all of their billing inquiries and also
enjoys welcoming potential and new members as she
is also our BYC Membership Coordinator. Outside
the BYC she enjoys home repair/remodel and interior
decorating with her fiancé Harry and Chihuahua
Rubia.

The May dinner featured
upgrades to the Pasadena Cruise
and several announcements for
future events.
We will join the Power Fleet for
a Cruise to The Club at Treasure Island, (formerly
Treasure Island Yacht Club), and will receive the
2nd night free as a courtesy of the new owners. This
will be a large cruise July 15-17 and we are reserving
25 spaces. This will be quite an event and will
require ASAP reservations from you. E-mail me at

reserve space. There will be no charge for this cruise
other than your own out-of-pocket expenses.
The Pasadena Cruise was scheduled for May 20-22
and included a pickup by the Gulfport Red Trolley
at the club for dinner at The Peninsula Inn and the
evening Art Walk. Results later.
Unfortunately the Venice Cruise scheduled for
June had to be cancelled due to a late start at VYC on
their dock project. We’ll probably go in September.
We’re working on an August cruise to the Clearwater
area. Hope to hit both Clearwater and Carlouel YC.
