“Leather is very similar to wood. You can do
so much with it,” says Shane Grissom, owner of
Grissom Custom Leather. Shane has always been
an artist but has only started working with leather
after the unfortunate death of his father a few years
ago. His mother gave him a hand-tooled belt that
belonged to his father, but it did not fit him. Still,
Shane was inspired by the belt’s design and the
spirit of his father to buy the tools and the leather to
recreate the belt.
After recreating his father’s belt, Shane was
encouraged to do more belts and more work with
leather. Wallets, gun holsters, motorcycle seats,
guitar straps, purses, money clips, knife sheaths, and
the list keeps getting longer.
What started out 3 years ago as a hobby in
Virginia Beach has now become a full-time career
for Shane. Shane and his wife Karen moved to
Greensboro and Shane was pleasantly surprised
that he liked the Triad so much. The Triad must
also like Shane a lot because now Shane operates
out of the Piedmont Triad Farmers market 6 days
a week after starting his business in a now defunct
flea market off Huffman Street. He is very grateful
for the people that have helped him along and is so
happy to see people inspired by him. You to can be
inspired by Shane’s hand tooled and hand stitched
work by going to his website

Triad Health Project:
28 Years Serving Those Affected by HIV/AID
By Sara E. Butner
In 1986, as the unfamiliar, deadly sickness that
had emerged in larger cities first began to appear
in the Triad, a group of 14 friends gathered in a
Greensboro house to brainstorm ways to help.
Their grassroots effort looked for ways to meet the
immediate needs of people who had contracted
HIV and AIDS, who in the mid-80s still faced
eviction and job loss as a result of their diagnoses.
Park Orchestra, The Pretty Ugly, Dressed To Kill,
and Lemon Jack.
“Of course, they never anticipated that there
would still be a need for those services 28
years later,” says Ken Keeton, the director of
development and community involvement for
the Triad Health Project, as the organization is
now known. What started as a small group of
concerned friends is now United Way-funded
agency that reaches thousands each year in the
Triad and beyond.
Next, on May 17 THP will hold its 25th annual
Dining With Friends fundraiser. To celebrate
the milestone, Keeton says that the organizers
are working to invite early friends of the health
project, “to combine the past and present with
the future.” Meanwhile, a donor has challenged
THP to grow its Facebook community. If the THP
Facebook page can reach 2,500 likes by Feb. 14,
the donor will give a $1,000 sponsorship to Dinner
With Friends.
The Triad Health Project, based in Greensboro,
still serves HIV/AIDS patients who need housing,
counseling, or medical care. Additionally, THP
offers free HIV/AIDS testing each Monday night
at its office on Summit Street and sends health
educators throughout the community to distribute
condoms and promote safer sex. Another health
educator connects with users in online relationship
communities, sharing advice and resources
for HIV education. A case manager is on-site
every day at Cone Health’s Regional Center for
Infectious Disease. And, since 2000, the Higher
Ground Day Center (located in Fisher Park) has
hosted programs for those infected or affected in
any way by HIV/AIDS.
“It means so much to us that these groups use
their gifts and talents to benefit the Triad Health
Project,” Keeton says. “We really depend on
this to raise awareness of the ways we serve the
community.”
Even as the project’s staff and volunteers
continue to serve and educate, Keeton says they
always have an eye on the future. “All of us are
looking to the day when our services are no longer
needed because no one is affected by this horrible
disease anymore,” he says.
Even today, there’s still a tremendous stigma
associated with HIV/AIDS, Keeton says. And
many of the people that the project serves face
other complications in addition to their illness.
About 80 percent live below the poverty line; 50
percent are or have been homeless.
“Our case managers have to navigate a
whole host of issues unrelated directly to their
HIV status,” he says. “Those issues have to be
addressed before we can focus on their medical
treatment. If someone doesn’t have a roof over
their head, they’re not going to think about taking
their medication.”
A Feb. 15 concert at Somewhere Else Tavern
will benefit the Triad Health Project’s programs.
Sponsored by the Triad Sports Network, Moe’s
Southwest Grill, and 336 Events, the concert
features original music by four local bands: Trailer

Networking 109:
Network Deliberately with Focus
by Teddy Burriss - Networking Strategist
You can only reap the benefits of networking if
you put forth deliberate effort with focus.
Deliberate means “doing something consciously
and intentionally.” Focus means to “pay particular
attention to.”
Often when people head off to networking
events they do so believing they are there to find a
new business opportunity, leads, referrals, or a job.
Even though this could be their primary purpose
in life, career, business, or community, it’s not the
primary purpose of networking.
Being focused on your primary purpose while
networking is akin to searching for a needle in a
haystack. It could be there, but the likelihood of
finding it is minuscule and it’s a waste of time.
If, however, while networking you focus
deliberately on meeting new people and having
unique and diverse conversations, regardless of
the relevance to your primary purpose, you will be
more successful.
Get to know the people you are meeting, what
they are interested in, and how you could help
them. Never forget, networking is all about making
new connections and building relationships.
It’s these new connections and developing
relationships that will help you with your primary
purpose(s) in life, career, business, or community.
You’ll discover how, only after you have focused
deliberately on making the connections and
building the relationships.
Repeat after me, “Networking is all about
making connections and building relationships.”
I’m not implying that you should leave
your primary purpose in the car when you are
networking. Just don’t focus on it so much that you
lose out on making a great connection, hearing a
fantastic idea or a new perspective that can create
great value for you.
You’re not going to meet that new connection
who personally needs your help and afterwards is
willing to share an idea that will positively change
your life beyond anything you could ever imagine.
You’re not going to meet that person who wants
to help you any way they can, because they see that
you are willing to do the same for others.
Keep your primary purpose in the back of your
mind while networking because you do need to
pay attention to how the people, conversations and
ideas discovered can benefit you.
However, never deviate from the primary
purpose of networking, “making new connections
and building relationships.”
As you build relationships you will get
permission to talk about your primary purpose
and further discover how the people and ideas you
learn can help you.
Be deliberate, be focused and network to
make new connections and build relationships.
Afterwards consider how these connections and
relationships relate to your primary purpose.
This educational series is brought to us
by Teddy Burriss, a world renowned Social
Networking Coach. Teddy teaches “Networking
for Mutual Benefit” and “Building Relationships

If you’re focused on your primary purpose;
You’re not going to meet that new connection
who has a personal friend who can help you.
You’re not going to hear about a new business
in town that needs your skills and experiences
doing something quite differently than you could
have imagined your skills being used for.
