Cherry festival is held in spring. The park’s symbol, the13-meter-high observatory, overlooks Sayama Hill and a variety of views including Mt. Fuji can be enjoyed in all seasons. Visitors can enjoy various interesting courses such as the course with a lawn field, an observatory, and Field Athletics and the course which runs through woods. Hakonegasaki, which intersects these two former roads, was alive very much with many people as a strategic point. At Sayama Shrine, there is “the monument of Sayama chaba tea place (written by Katsu Kaishu)” which was inscribed with names of people who were involved in the tea place at the time. A night-light at the intersection of Zanborigawa River was placed praying for peace and safety of the village, and it was moved and placed at Hako-no-ike Pond in Sayama-ike Park. In the precincts, there is a big zelkova tree which is a designated natural monument. Contrast with the red torii is creating the elegant atmosphere. The sublime main shrine from the Momoyama Era is the oldest wooden building in the city, and it is one of the designated tangible cultural assets of Tokyo. There is the Mori Museum of Art in the precincts, and Takaraichi Market (an antique market) is held on the second Sunday every month. When a new channel was needed to be built with Edo’s development, Tamagawa Waterway was planned by Shouemon and Seiemon. The brothers completed the waterway to Yotsuyaokido in Shinjuku only in 8 months in 1653. The shogunate government promoted the brothers to Bushi position and titled them the “Josuiyaku (waterway position)” to administrate the waterway. Hamura Quarters Gate Hamura Quarters Gate MAP P07 A B-2 Along the Okutama Kaido, the riverbank area where Hamura Dam locates is crowded with tourists during the high-season. In the center of this area, there is a symbol of Hamura City, the Hamura Dam, which was excavated by the Tamagawa brothers in 1653. The water, which had been provided to people in the Edo Era to support their living, is still used as a part of drinking water for citizens of Tokyo now. Hamura Quarters Gate was established to place the governmental office for the purpose to maintain and control Tamagawa Waterway. The Hamura Sluice Gate is its ruins and only the Hamura Quarters Gate remains this date. Mitakesan MAP P09 A A-2 Mt. Mitakesan is popular for its splendid view. Musashi Mitakejinja Shrine of the farming God during the Edo Era is recommended to visit. In the treasury, many cultural assets such as a national treasure, “Akaito-odoshi-ooyoroi (armor)”, and sword dedicated by General Hatakeyama Shigetada in the Kamakura Era are displayed. On the way to Mt. Otakesan from Mitakejinja Shrine, the area from Nanayo-no-Taki Waterfall to Ayahirono-Taki Waterfall is called Rock Garden. It is pleasurable to see the view of the ravine consists of falls and rocks which changes its appearance season by season. The view of the center of Tokyo from the mountain top is also magnificent. In mid June, approximately 100,000 flowers will bloom all at the same time. There are many historic places in the area. Shiofune-Kannonji Temple surrounded with the cedar grove which is more than 1000 yearold, is also famous as the azalea temple. Works of Ogiwara Morie (Rokuzan) and Takamura Kotaro along with other artists who were active during the Meiji Era and the Showa Era are displayed. It is selected one of “the 100 best waters in Japan” as the most beautiful clear stream in the Chichibu Tama Kai National Park. In June, the appreciation gathering of fireflies is held by the Kurosawa River which is flowing by the spring village. Scenic spot in surrounding area Narikimasu-ga-Taki Waterfalls The name, “Narikimasugataki”, was derived from the shape of its bottom, which is a shape of a measure (“masu”). The waterfalls consist of two falls; the upper fall (9m50cm) and the lower fall (12m). A Kabokuen Garden Approximately 80 kinds and 8,000 flowers and trees can be enjoyed season by season. There are sample gardens of trees, flowers, wild plants and fruit trees and a farm to experience cultivation from planting through harvest.
