First of all – a huge ‘THANK YOU’ to all the board members that are continuing to serve on the board. Also, ‘THANK YOU’ to Mary Hurlburt and Duncan McColl, who stepped down this term but helped the board run smoothly over the past few terms. Welcome Zac Robinson & Kathy Hendren – thanks for joining our fine group. I’ve been having lots of fun learning all the goings-‐on in the club, from the National level to the committee level. It’s been conveyed that our club’s goal – at both National and Section levels -‐ is to improve membership participation; that’s just one objective I intend to focus upon. We also got the results from our first ever survey, and members’ requests are pretty much in line with our goals. Your answers show we have a lot of aspiring trip leaders, but want more training; an e-‐mail focusing on this will be sent out in the future. I’d like to incorporate a weekly in-‐town outdoor activity – whether it be a weeknight or weekend afternoon of skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, or whatever your fancy. Additionally, more beginner trips; more family trips; more ‘girls’ only’ trips; and a greater variety of trips (snow shoeing, track skiing, etc.). And finally, more social activities – i.e. Christmas Party. We anticipate adding more skills weekends to WIM, WOI & SIM, thus providing course participants with more opportunity to use their new-‐found skills. A mentoring program is in the works -‐ active trip leaders who are interested in mentoring please contact me. Aspiring trip participants interested in being mentored may also contact me. Sounds good? I think so! But there’s one catch – we need more volunteers to help with all these ‘more and bigger’ things. Ernst did a great job restructuring the board and has an awesome panel but we’re starting to burn out -‐ below is a detailed task list: • LEADERS FOR ALL TYPES OF BEGINNER TRIPS • Co-‐ordinate mentors with “mentees” • Help develop a mentorship program. I don’t want this to turn into a complicated process, basically develop a guideline and by talking to mentors and “mentees” – it should be an easy task. • Co-‐ordinate weekly in-‐town trips. You get to pick activities and where/when. We are working on developing an on-‐line schedule for this event. • Arrange 2 social break-‐even events/year. I.e. Christmas Party • Photo Contest and award nights – someone to contact sponsors and pick up prize donations • Someone to do a presentation on ‘Snow Shoeing’ for one class as part of our WIM course Please contact me if you’re interested in any of the above voluntary activities. This is a great club and I’ve enjoyed my last 6 years being a part of it; it’s given me so much opportunity to develop my skills in activities I love and has done so much for my personal growth too. I’ve spent the last 4 years as vice-‐chair and am looking forward to my new venture of giving back to the club. Please join me and together everyone can make this club the leader in ‘sharing our passion for the mountains’.
