I am wondering if your summer has flown by
as quickly as mine. With the evenings and
mornings having a hint of fall in the air, it
encourages me to once again look at the
things I wanted to achieve in 2014. I hope you
are finding time to enjoy all that this life is

Barb Mattheis reported on July 7:
I have a new tracking title to report on
my puppy! On June 1, 2014, my puppy,
"Flipkins" was 8 1/2 months old, and he
passed his tracking test at the Moraine
Tracking Club's test at Ottawa under
judges Beth Walker and Inge Suchanek.
After a bit of a scare while Flipkins
pulled me back toward the judges and
gallery to say “hi,” we both recovered
and he finished the track. Goldens have
that need to meet and greet, and it sometimes gets them into trouble. Flipkins
now has his first title: Sandhau Skipper
Flipkins of Tailwind TD. What a thrill
and what a talented puppy. His future
will include more tracking, field and
obedience, and of course, agility. Let
the games begin.

2015 Specialty Committee Report
Submitted by Bill McEachern
The Specialty Committee and Board met on August 27 to discuss options in light of a
Waukesha Expo scheduling conflict that resulted in the facility not being available on
Saturday, February 28. Given the limited options available, the board and committee
decided to offer a back-to-back Specialty on Sunday, March 1, i.e., two breed shows
with different judges and two obedience (Goldens only) shows with different judges.
The Specialty Committee (Joan Kaml, Bill McEachern, Pat Smith, Sandy Stoller, Jean
Taylor, Josie Trad) also met on August 13. We have several volunteers confirmed: Josie
Trad (show chair), Joan Kaml (show secretary), Shirley Wolcyk (obedience chief ring
steward), Bob and Barb Weber (obedience stewards), Jean Taylor (trophies and ribbons), Jean Granger (decorations), Pat Smith (educational materials). We will publish a
list of volunteer opportunities in the newsletter as we get closer to the event. In the
meantime, be sure to put Sunday, March 1, on your calendar.
We discussed ways to promote the Specialty as well as other 2015 BGRC events and
plan to run ads in GR News, the GRCA Fall National Catalog, and the January Greater
Twin Cities Golden Retriever Club Specialty Catalog. We will also be listed in the 2015
GRCA annual calendar. We have developed a flyer to promote our Specialty as well the
October All-Breed Obedience Trials and will email/mail it to past exhibitors and
selected clubs in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. We will bring
copies of the flyers to the September meeting for members to take to other clubs and
sites to promote our events. We will also do a mailing of premiums as we get closer to
the events.
The committee discussed possible changes for the 2016 Specialty. These included
changing the date(s), changing the venue, and doing two shows in one day. The pros/
cons of these alternatives were considered and we concluded no change should be made
at this time. We will re-evaluate options after we see the impact of increased promotion
on the 2015 entry and profit.
The committee will meet again in December.

Chris Getter reported on August 26:
Maplehills Red Hot Chili Pepper earned
his Graduate Novice title on April 27 at
the Northern Flyway Specialty. He earned
a first place for all three legs. Then in June
he was invited to participate in the UKC
Novice All Stars Competition which includes the top 50 dogs who participated in
UKC Novice the previous year. It was fun
competing against some really good dogs
but we did not place in the top five.
Then on June 22 Chili earned his AKC
Novice Title and on July 12 his Junior
Hunter Title. We competed five more
times in Novice earning three first places
and two second places, ending with two
High in Trials with scores of 198 and 199.
Chili is an incredibly fun dog to work with
as he is always up for whatever job I want
him to do.

Treasurer’s Report:
Joan Kaml reported on Hunt Test income/expenses and BGRC financial status.
Field Report:
Hunt Test wrap-up (Josie Trad):
 Great workers who gave above and beyond what was expected.
 Thank you to all workers.
 Want success and fun.
 BGRC Board is hoping all members will want to be a part of this; we are working
to improve all areas.
 28 workers were at our June 14 and June 15 Hunt Tests.
Member comments regarding Hunt Tests:
 Dan Feisthammel questioned the need for non-member gunners and payment of
services, suggested that club members should be asked to be gunners. Show of
hands for qualified gunners indicated three (Ken Nelson, Dan Feisthammel, John
Stoller).
 Joan Kaml and Sandy Flaaten both said we have always paid gunners and have
usually gone outside the club.
 Marty Kleven said his goal for BGRC would be to host two different hunt tests: one
at Bong and one at Wern Valley. Marty also discussed a problem with proper shells
being used by our gunners; the board has made note of this for future hunt tests.
 Bill McEachern suggested member interest forms so hunt test committee and board
are aware of member skills. Sandy Stoller said that is in place during membership
dues renewal.
Next field event: WC/WCX on Sunday, August 10, at Bong. Workers are still needed;
see Josie.
Anne Millane reported on August 26:

Please welcome Sarah to the BGRC.
Badgergold Tips
Submitted by Bill McEachern
This is the final installment of Badgergold Tips. In previous issues we focused on
Conversations (April/May) and Photos (June/July). The final Main Menu item I want to
discuss is Files. This is an area where we can share important club documents and information.
There are currently four folders: Breeder Referral, Bylaws and Policies, Event Results,
and Recognition and Awards Program. The content of these folders is under review and
pending updates. I plan to review with the Board how we should use this resource. One
of the issues is where information should be—on our web page, on Badgergold, or on
both. Stay tuned for future developments.

Susan Stiller joined BGRC in early 2014.
She has one Golden, Naylans Golden
Honey. Honey is an 8-year-old Golden and
the third Golden to be part of Susan’s family. Susan and Honey do obedience and
agility training together and they earned a
Novice Agility title in a sweep of three
shows with two first places. They also enjoy visiting nursing homes where Honey is
a hit with all the residents. She has a CGC
title and has a natural talent as a therapy
dog. On the visits to the nursing homes,
Honey goes to each patient, visits, then
moves on to the next person on her own.
Susan trains for agility at Dog’s Welcome
in Madison along with fellow BGRC
member Barb Wolf. Honey took to training
early on as a puppy and has been in some
form of structured training since 6 months
of age. Susan reports that Honey goes everywhere with her and is her constant
companion.
Susan’s first Golden was Pasha. Susan
rescued Pasha from a neighbor who was
less than interested in his new puppy. Pasha visited Susan on a regular basis for
treats and meals. When Susan’s neighbor
moved he left her the dog and Pasha found
her real home. Pasha lived to the ripe age
of 17½ years and loved to flush pheasants,
a natural ability she inherited. Susan’s second Golden, Taffy, had a completely different disposition. She just wanted to be a
family dog. That worked for Susan, and
Taffy lived 16½ years.
Honey is not the only interesting member
of the Schiller household. Susan is an active bowler and has been taking organ lessons for 3 years. As the third and youngest
sibling she didn’t have the opportunity to
pursue music lessons as a youth but when
she acquired the family organ from her
mother, she enthusiastically pursued her
“musical career.” She enjoys music of the
’60s and can provide an entertaining set of
Elvis tunes! Susan also makes dog treats
with salmon, tuna, or chicken as the main
