Here's where we stand: In 2006, the first year I was elected president, we spent $18,000 on capital improvements: a pavilion extension, demolition of the old shed and purchase and placement of a new shed, installing new tops on the benches, pit improvements and other things. That year the club spent considerably more on improvements than it took in. At that time we knew we needed to become more efficient. More frugal with our spending, if we were to continue those improvements and didn't want someone to say things like "that new president and his board are spending money like drunken sailors and will bankrupt the club in no time". So in 2007 we looked for ways to cut expenses and at the end of 2007 we ended the year with a $15,000 net increase in working capital even though we were still doing improvements, such as an entire new target system in the pits which is almost all paid for already. Money that was sitting doing nothing in stagnant accounts was moved to accounts where it will earn interest for the club. The current overall club financial picture is that the total of all club accounts (general savings, target savings, checking and certificate of deposit) is a little over $67,000. Our plan is to continue to make enough money to be able to proceed with the master plan - of having new concrete pads, new benches, and a new pavilion. We are looking at needing 10's of thousands of dollars. It's a vision that will be several years in the making. To have any hope of going forward, we need to keep finding ways to pay for it. There were major ways we saved money last year. First of all, club officers did a lot of work that the club had been paying to have done. The club had been paying someone to come to our matches, sit in the measuring room and data enter information into the computer. Now we have several board members who can do this computer work, resulting in major savings. Second, the club paid to have the newsletter work done : set up, mailing, etc. That system is totally changed. The newsletter is largely set up by computer, thanks to Phil Bower who has the knowledge to do that, and the generosity to donate hours and hours of his time to accomplish it. Matt Dienes found us a way to print our clearer, and definitely better pictured, newsletter. And we can now print only the number of copies we need. In the past, with the old way of printing, the club had to order hundreds more copies than were really needed. Those papers were just wasted, finally being hauled off to a re-cycling center, or burnt. Matt also takes care of the mailing. He does the newsletter work plus doing his PR work for the club, helping to get us $1,000's of dollars in donations for our World Open. Third, thanks to Melissa and Chip Wagner, we have a new system for our plaques. In 2006 the club spent $3,900 in year end award plaques. In 2007 we gave out the same number of plaques at a cost of $2,300 - a $1,600 savings. Melissa and Chip keep track of what plaques need to be ordered, do the ordering, pick the plaques up and bring them to the club , saving a bundle in shipping fees. Besides the work on the plaques Melissa also spends time selling raffle tickets and doing PR work with advertisers and donors. We're not going to do the gun raffle as we did last year but we talked about doing fund raising by raffles for things like scopes or actions. And we talked about having a special 40th anniversary light gun built and raffled off at the 40th anniversary end of year banquet. We'll keep you informed about this, but the idea is to have a gun built that everyone will want to win. We're setting up policies regarding the newsletter, which is something that has not been done in the past. It has been decided that only active shooters will be on a mailing list to receive preprinted newsletters. An active shooter is defined as a shooter who has shot in 4 of the last 10 matches. The "last 10 matches" is defined as exactly that - the last 10 matches. It won't matter if the matches are in different years. For example, having shot in match 9 and 10 in 2007 will be counted towards the 4 out of 10 into 2008. Phil says he has a way to telling the computer to send the printer a mailing list based on figuring out who shot in 4 of the last 10 matches and the mailing list will be automatically updated after each match. Amazing, isn't it? If any other person, other than an active shooter, wants to receive a newsletter via US mail they will need to pay a yearly subscription fee, which has been kept at $20.00. This newsletter that you're reading will be the last one you receive in your mailbox unless you are either an active shooter (you shot in 4 of last year's matches) or you send in your $20.00 subscription fee. The options of picking up a free newsletter at the club house or of getting a copy on the internet will remain and is free of charge. It was decided that we will continue to sell life memberships but the cost is being raised from $450.00 to $550.00. There will be no increase in membership dues. They remain at $35.00 for an individual and $40.00 for family. Entry fees will remain at $17.00 Our club has been asked to sanction a new 1000 Yard shooting club to be formed in the Houston, Texas area. Frank Grappone and Phil Bower have been working with that club, getting some advice from Jeff Mottern. Thanks Jeff for your professional expertise. The original agreement to be the sanctioning body for the club in Montana also is being reviewed and updated. I'll keep you informed of the progress. The only change to the 2008 rulebook that was discussed was to change the age of junior shooters. Junior shooters are currently those between the ages of 12 and 18. It's been suggested to lower the age to 8 years old. We'll have a membership vote on this at the first match. If the rule is changed, we'll need to also make new rules about those junior shooters under age 12: they need to have their "mentor" or "guardian" within arms length of them at all times when they are shooting and their mentor needs to provide a pit puller. We don't allow anyone under the age of 12 to be a pit puller but any shooter, including those junior shooters younger than 12, are responsible for fulfilling pit duty. It was decided to look at changing the age of our junior shooters because the state of Pennsylvania conservation law has been changed to allow persons younger than 12 to hunt with firearms, if accompanied by parents. The board voted on and passed a resolution so that any changes made to the rulebook will be for a one-year trial period. After the year has passed there will be another vote to determine whether the rule will remain. It was decided that the club will not put on a chicken barbeque in 2008. This barbeque costs the club about $600.00 and member interest and participation didn't warrant that kind of expenditure. We're doing something different with our year-end awards banquet. It was decided that we'd have our banquet shoot on a Saturday, instead of Sunday. The awards banquet will be held that same Saturday evening. We're looking at changing the location of the banquet, too. We'll keep you posted about that and about what the cost will be. The 600-yard matches will become part of our regular matches, just a different class. Frank Grappone will explain more about this in his article. We've set the dates for next year's matches: Work parties: April 5 & 6 and April 19 & 20 Match 1: May 3 & 4 Match 2: May 17 & 18 Match 3: May 31 and June 1 Match 4: June 14 & 15 Match 5: June 28 & 29 World Open: July 12 and 13 Match 6: July 26 & 27 Match 7: August 9 & 10 Match: 8 August 23 & 24 Match 9: September 6 & 7 Match 10: September 20 & 21 Banquet and banquet match: October 18 We need a lot of help at our work parties. In case you didn't know it, there are no targets at the range and haven't been since last fall when we had volunteers who came to the club and did a lot of work tearing down the old targets and getting ready to install the new ones this spring. No targets, no matches. So we need to be sure that the targets are up and functional before the end of April. And we have three new large numbers that need to be put on the back bank and some of the old numbers that need new holders built. We need to move the numbers depending on where the new targets are. As always, we also need to rake the back bank, fill in the holes and cut the brush. Let me know whether you can help so we can get an idea of how many workers we'll have and what tools they can bring. Committees for 2008 were set: Rules committee - Frank Grappone, Phil Bower & George Bower; Trailer Committee - Kathy Saltalamachia, Mike Licate & Erin Moon; World Open Committee - Frank Grappone, Matt Dienes & Melissa Wagner; Fund Raising/Advertising - Gary & Debbie Hendrix, Melissa Wagner and Matt Dienes; Banquet committee - Ted & Sarah Morgan; Nominating committee - all board members. The President is part of each committee. It was decided to continue giving jackets to the 2 gun end of year champion. I have sad news. Over the winter, Jerry Phillips was killed in an auto accident and Charlie Russell just passed away, I'm told of an aneurysm. Our condolences and prayers go to the families. Joe Salt. From Frank... As is normal, despite rigorous prior planning to insure all board members would stay on agenda, the annual winter Board of Directors meeting was a raucous display of democracy at its best. It is indeed a pleasure to watch a group of individuals work diligently in the best interests of the organization without any concern for personal gain. Here are some highlights of the meeting: Attendance was down and has been down for four years in a row now. We think its a number of items that contribute to that phenomena- high gas prices, severe weather knocked 29 shooters out of the aggs the first Sunday alone, and has anyone noticed the price of bullets and powder lately!!! I just got a Cabela's flyer and every paragraph has a disclaimer that they can't guarantee prices because of the volatile nature of markets this year. Hopefully we can all ride this storm out. In spite pf the aforementioned doom and gloom, the Board, through fiscal responsibility, managed the club's assets with distinction. We had the best flow through from entry fees to cash in the bank in the last five years. Every expenditure is examined and spent like it was our money. This fiscal responsibility has put us in a very solid financial condition to go forward with some aggressive capital projects in the future. This frugality has also allowed us to maintain our membership and shooting fees at the present levels. If you have ever visited and shot at another club you'll know what a great deal this club is. The schedule was discussed at length to address concerns that came up with last year's schedule. There have been four weekends that we have designated as no shoot weekends. They are Mother's Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July. and Labor Day. After much discussion of alternative dates the schedule is as posted. Not everyone will be pleased but we got several things accomplished, most of the shooting is conducted in the best shooting months of the year and we did not start too early or end too late. Our Fortieth year of shooting will be highlighted with a special 40th Anniversary rifle being raffled instead of the annual gun raffle. This will be a Williamsport legal light gun crafted by our gunsmiths and stock makers. We expect this to be significant fundraiser. We will add another affiliate club in Texas this year. I will be visiting them this winter to take a look at facilities and go over any support they may need from us. I know of no other national bench rest club affiliated in Texas. This has the potential to be a large and successful organization. It has been agreed that another class will be added to the shooting disciplines at Williamsport. 600 yard shooting will be treated as another class such as heavy and light gun. Rules and procedures will be incorporated into the club manual. This will allow the club to realize all the benefits of the 600-yard events and will add validity to the 600-yard shooters. Yes there will be plaques awarded and payoffs made. Additionally another class will be added to the 600-yard shoots. We will add a factory class to the light and heavy gun classes. These will be as stated- factory original rifles that weigh 11lbs or less. This may give an opportunity to a new shooter to begin in a long-range discipline. I know in the past, this is the way many of us started shooting and may be again. The schedule for the 600-yard shoots is as follows: successful year in the 600-yard class. Fun shoot- 5/17th Match 1 - 5/31 Match 2 - 6/14 Match 3 - 7/26 Match 4 - 8/9 Match 5 - 8/23 Match 6 - 9/6 There are plans being made to hold a benchrest school at the club this spring. For information, contact anyone on the web contact page or ask Joe, Frank or Matt at the club or via phone. Thier numbers are on the website. There will be recognition for the Grand Champion in each class this year based on the best 4 match aggregate. Procedures are in place to expedite the matches and recognize shooters. I look forward to a very With that I will return to the loading room to continue to prep brass and sort bullets for the upcoming season. See you April 5th !!!!!! Joe outlined the schedule in his article and I would like everyone to make a special note of the work weekends. Folks, we need a lot of work to be done on those weekends. We have no targets at the range and we all know what they call a range with no targets now don't we? Bring your cordless tools and ratchet wrench sets, as they will be put to good use. We also need to erect new target numbers and secure the ones that are present now. Lots of additional work needs to be done in addition to the regular maintenance work that is conducted every spring.
