Save these dates on your calendar, May 16-17, for the 2015 MTFA State fishing derby. This year’s derby will be hosted by the Springfield Missouri chapter. Derby rules will be handed out the day of the derby at Bennett Spring State Park. The derby can be a great family outing as there is no age limit on who can enter and you don’t need to be a member of MTFA. We are encouraging a $5.00 (donation) as an entry fee to the MTFA. The derby can be a great chance to meet other anglers that share your passion for trout fishing. The fishing itself can be fun, too. Last year’s derby attracted over one hundred angler’s from surrounding areas, and those that caught a tagged fish were able to choose a great prize. Come and join the fun! Page 3 Fly of the Month Klod Hopper Created by Paul Stimpson, Utah By Al and Gretchen Beatty Materials for Klod Hopper: Hook: Size 6-10, Mustad 9671. Thread: Dar k brown. Body: Tan craft foam. Hackle: Brown. Over Body: Tan dubbing. Wing: Elk hair . Legs: Red/black r ubber legs. Step 1: Place the hook in the vise and attach the tying thread behind the hook eye. Cut 2mm craft foam into a strip as wide as the hook gape and trim one end so it comes to a blunt point. Position the foam strip so the pointed end sticks out beyond the end of the hook a short distance. Tie it on starting at the front and ending at the end of the shank. Leave the thread there for the next step and do not trim off the extra foam sticking out front. Step 2: Prepare and tie on a brown hackle. Dub a body that covers the back 3/4 of the shank. Palmer the hackle forward, tie it off, and trim away the waste end. Notice the hackle is sized smaller than normal. Step 3: Select, clean, and stack a clump of elk hair. Bind it to the hook to form a wing that is as long as the body. Trim away the excess fibers Continued on Page 5 Page 4 Presidents Message: We have a great number of scheduled events planned. Lilley’s Landing Fishing Report: T he San Juan W orm is hot above (and below) Fall Creek in pink , red or white. Our guides are adding a #12 light gray scuds 18 inches below the SJW and catching some quality rainbows and browns in the trophy area. Even with 4 full units, Steve Dickey's clients were landing big rainbows, drifting from Lookout down to Fall Creek. "I look into... my fly box, and think about all the elements I should consider in choosing the perfect fly: water temperature, what stage of development the bugs are in, what the fish are eating right now. Then I remember what a guide told me: 'Ninety percent of what a trout eats is brown and fuzzy and about five-eighths of an inch long." The derby starts at 9:00am and concludes at 11:00am. Last year there were approximately 150 kids that signed up for the derby. We will need volunteers for the registration table, weigh in and to help with fishing instruction and the awards ceremony. Volunteers need to be there between 7:30-8:00am to get things organized. Note: Registration begins at 8:30am. Gary Page 5 Fly of the Month Cont’d Step 4: Select two sections of red/black rubber leg material and tie them both on the near side of the hook with a couple of snug wraps. Reposition one of the leg segments to the off side of the hook then bind them both in place with several tight wraps. Use your scissors to trim them to length. Step 5: Grab the foam strip remaining from Step 1, pull it over, and bind it to the hook to form the head. Trim away the excess foam. Notice the trimmed end of foam helps hold the wing fibers in place. Whip finish and remove the thread. Apply a coat of Aqua Head to seal the whip finish.
