of John Banvard? You’re
to be forgiven if the
name is unfamiliar;
few people these days
remember him. In
the mid-19th century,
though, he was something of a phenomenon.
In 1840, the then-25year-old man set off on a
skiff down the Mississippi River. He spent
more than a year on
the river, sketching
steadily along the way.
After he completed the
voyage, he spent another five years painting
his “Panorama of the
Mississippi,” an ambitious work that was 12
feet wide and more than

• If you have small
scratches in your wood
furniture, try this old
trick: Rub a walnut over
dings to cover them up.
Or find a matching
brown crayon, rub it
lightly into the scratch,
and finish with a hair
dryer held 10 inches
away for about 10-15
seconds. It melts the
wax of the crayon, and
then you can buff it with
a soft rag. Any excess
is swept away, and the
color remains.
• If you have a plasticbristle broom that’s
starting to get really
ragged, don’t get rid of
it: turn it into a scrub
broom. Trim the bristles
down to about an inch.
You can even cut them
at an angle. Then you
can use this broom to
scrub stubborn spots.
The bristles are nice and
tight when they’re so
short.
• Still fireplace season
in your neck of the
woods? Most of us know
not to burn magazine
inserts or anything
plastic, but did you
know that you CAN add
some spice to your fire?
Save the peel from your
citrus fruits (oranges,
tangerines, grapefruit —
even lemons and limes)
to add to your fire. They
burn well, and they
smell great!

dish gloves first. It
sounds silly, but I do
not have any snags in
my stockings, and the
grip of the gloves makes
them easy to pull up
and adjust for a perfect

bulb that has broken off
in the socket and you
need to get it out to replace it, use needlenose
pliers to grab the metal
ring and unscrew it. If
that doesn’t work, you
might be able to use a
bar of soap to grab any
glass shards sticking
out, and unscrew it that
way.

on clothing, try using
club soda to remove it
while the stain is fresh.

new keys to a key ring,
especially if you don’t
have much of a fingernail. I have found a
foolproof way to get the
key started. Just use a

I was conversing with a young man earlier this week
over breakfast. When I can bring myself to resist the
urge to lead conversation, I find it interesting to listen
to the perspective of others. It can be enlightening to
see the world through the eyes of another generation.
Though he didn’t have the benefit of years of experience, it was interesting that his perspective was different
enough from mine to allow for a fresh outlook.
He said something curious. It was his contention that
this stretch of bitter cold weather was the fault of the
information age. That is what I deduced from his declaration. That’s not really what he meant and I knew as
much, so I questioned him. He blamed the cold on his
cell phone, the LED business signs that he passed on
his way to work, and frequent weather reports. He said if
he weren’t constantly reminded about the extreme temperatures and prodded about the likelihood of snowfall
he would probably chop though the work day without
very much thought about the matter.
Later in the day I was reading an article that included
a statement by a psychologist. She said that it is possible
to reinforce pain. Now that got me curious. She said that
repeatedly questioning someone about pain will remind
them of it and raise their pain level. What I took from her
quote was that showing concern, taken to the extreme,
may result in more frequent thoughts about discomfort.
Without realizing it, my lunch friend was offering a
critique of the information age in which he was raised.
At the touch of a button, or by verbal command, he could
access any information he wanted. His frustration was
that he was given far more information, more frequently
than he really intended. “Though the temperature would
be the same either way, I’m more miserable working
outside because I’m being reminded about how cold it
is.” (Probably not an accurate quote but it’s pretty close.)
Maybe he would prefer a simpler existence. Could there

I heard an interview with my favorite sports star, an
old-timer, a few days ago. One question struck him in
a way that he became passionate about his answer. He
said, “Next to God, the most important thing is attitude.”
He went on to explain that attitude had everything to do
with how each day progressed. Each day has troubles
and each person makes an attitude choice. It’s not dictated by others. Though they may mistreat me, I still
decide if I’ll have a good or a bad day.
It is difficult to avoid becoming overwhelmed by everything that is pushing to the front, demanding our attention. There is a solution when the information we are
bombarded with is spinning out of control and I didn’t

Here’s your forecast for Friday, February 27, 2015.
It will be cold and blustery outdoors, while warm
and inviting indoors. The first part of this prediction is courtesy of the long-range weather forecast
by AccuWeather. The latter is based on my personal experience from attending past Sportsman’s
Nights Out at Laurel High School. If you missed
last week’s column, then allow me to bring you up
to speed. The 150+ student-members of the Laurel
Conservation Club (LCC) will be hosting their 30th
annual rendition of Sportsman’s Night Out tonight.
This eagerly anticipated event, the largest outdoor
show in Lawrence County, features informational exhibits, vendor displays, interesting seminars, raffles,
and food concessions. Doors open at 5:30 PM and
there is plenty to see and do throughout the evening
for all outdoorsmen, women, and youths. The cost
of admission is only $3.00 with senior citizens and
children under 7 admitted free.
Last week, we focused on the many interesting
events scheduled in the auditorium throughout the
evening. There will also be a wide variety of hunting, fishing, and trapping seminars conducted in the
many classrooms. Chances are very high that one
or more of the seminars will peak your interest and
cover something that you definitely want to hear
for yourself. The classroom seminars will run from
6:00-7:00 PM (Session #1) and 7:30-8:30 PM (Session
#2); while some will be offered during both sessions.
Here is the seminar schedule so you can make plans
on where to be during the course of the evening. (A
building diagram will be available to help find the
classrooms and LCC student-members will be present to help direct attendees.)

I’ve come to learn that there are no two outdoorsmen, women, or youths who are exactly alike when it
comes to the species they pursue, the methods they
employ, and the tactics they use. Sportsman’s Night
Out celebrates both the great diversity that exists
in our outdoor interests and the common bonds of
our proud outdoor heritage and conservation ethic
that binds us all together. Sportsman’s Night Out occurs only once a year and you’ll want to be part of it.

Creamy Spinach Tuna Casserole
8 oz. bag broad egg noodles
2 9-oz. pouches Progresso Recipe Starters creamy
portabella mushroom cooking sauce
12 oz. can solid white tuna in water, drained
9 oz. box Green Giant frozen chopped spinach,
thawed, squeezed to drain
1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill weed
2 teaspoons grated lemon peel
8 oz. can Pillsbury refrigerated crescent
dinner rolls
Heat oven to 375°F. Spray 2-quart casserole with
cooking spray. Cook and drain egg noodles as
directed on package. In large bowl, stir together
noodles, cooking sauce, tuna, spinach, cheese, dill
weed and lemon peel. Spoon mixture into casserole.
Unroll dough onto surface sprinkled lightly with
flour. Press dough to 12x7-inch rectangle. Using
2 1/2-inch round cutter, cut 8 rounds from dough.
Place rounds over tuna mixture in casserole.
Sprinkle with additional dill weed, if desired. Bake
20 to 25 minutes or until dough is golden brown.

America has often been called “a melting pot.” But
obviously that is not the case. Politicians tend to fuel
sensitivity to class and color divisions for their own
gain. Gender tensions abound. Generational differences are more marked than ever. In fact, cultural
observers are starting to say that the “melting pot”
metaphor is outdated—that the goal should be a cultural “stew” in which the distinct taste of each ingredient is enhanced by the contribution of the other
ingredients.
In a world where pride and prejudice abound, Jesus
offers us the joy of unity across all the lines that so
easily divide us. In His church, the unique flavors of
our diverse backgrounds can complement each other, united “through faith in Christ Jesus” (Gal. 3:26)
and empowered by His Spirit and our submission to
His principles. In Him our diversity doesn’t divide
but rather unites and enriches us as we recognize
that we all have Jesus, His Word, and His ways in
common. As we embrace Him together, our differences become secondary and our mutual love for
Him drives us to love each other as He has loved
us.
Jesus is the master mixer! In His kingdom, pride and
prejudice are out, and love and mutual acceptance
are the order of the day.
