The I/O Program is 20 years old. It’s time for a reunion! This year, which marks the 10th Anniversary of the Annual Fall Conference, we are inviting all of the I/O Program alumni to spend September 10 — 12 (weekend after Labor Day) at Clamshell Beach Resort near Jenkins, Minnesota. We will appoint a reunion organizer for each graduating class. The organizer will coordinate with students, the resort, and the I/O Program to set reservations and passon plans. Keep an eye on your email as you will be receiving updates about reservations, deposits, costs etc. Clamshell Beach Resort is on the Whitefish Chain of Lakes and is a wonderful spot for a gettogether. There will be a golf outing, meeting space, a refreshment tent, and boating expeditions. Meals will be included. You are welcome to bring your family members. A Publication of the Industrial/Organizational Psychology Program Page 2 I/O Update Alumni Focus: Carrie Christianson DeMay, Data Recognition When Dan asked me to write a piece describing my career path, I responded immediately that yes, I am thrilled to do it! Every day for several weeks it was on my task list and every day for several weeks I was excited to have it there. But every day for several weeks it moved from the current day’s task list to the next day’s list, not at all begun. And it wasn’t because I was too busy. In fact, I wasn’t very busy at all. I found myself cleaning out my email, reading old trade journals, sorting old paperwork, etc. It occurred to me that these are the tasks I do when there is something else I should be doing but am putting off as long as possible. Why was I doing this? I have struggled with the cause of procrastinating something fun like this, but now, putting fingers to keyboard, it has become painfully clear to me. My career progression has not been a path. A path is long and meandering with curves and direction changes. Mine is more like two stepping stones across a trickling stream. In fact, I could write ―a piece describing my career path‖ in two concise sentences and not overlook a thing. But then they might just make the picture bigger to fill up the space… So, here’s how it went. I had an interview at Questar for a Survey Research Project Manager Intern position. I was offered the job and I loved it! Then, 13 years ago, I had an interview for a Project Manager position in the Survey Division at Data Recognition Corporation. I was offered the job and I still love it! So, yes, my path consists of only two companies, but I have and continue to find my career very interesting and fulfilling. At DRC, I spent the first few years learning the ropes in both Project Management and Research Consulting. This is when I realized I was born a Project Manager. (Or, being the oldest of 7 kids, maybe I learned it.) Nonetheless, it was my calling. A few years ago I was promoted to Director of Project Management, which means I fulfill the role of Program Manager for our commercial accounts. These are very large-scale, complex employee engagement, 360, and customer satisfaction survey programs. Every day is exciting and challenging; no two days are alike; and my priorities change from hour to hour. In graduate school, I didn’t know this is what I wanted to do (or even that it existed) but I look back now and can see there were particular things I was learning to which I was drawn. The ―I‖ side more than the ―O‖. I jump right into managing details, creating processes, developing tactics - it is second nature for me. I definitely feel very fortunate to have jumped onto the two stones I did. The advice I have for students: 1) Always seek opportunities to learn 2) Always accept challenging assignments Even though my current role is not extensively research-focused, I make sure to remain involved in research in order to keep current with the field – particularly within SIOP. I feel that no matter where I am or what I’m doing, I’ll always be an I/O first. I also obtained an MBA a few years ago. And, just like with the I/O program, I LOVED being a student again, learned a ton, and use the information I obtained every day. Having always been on the provider side (for which the I/O program prepared me well), I feel the business degree gives me a much greater understanding of the client side as well. And finally, I find it impossible to describe my career without providing huge kudos to the program. If you have been around awhile, you know what an amazing program this is. If you’re a first year student, let me just say that I could effortlessly write a piece advocating the program – without any procrastinating at all… and there would be no room for the photo. Winter 2008 Page 3 Alumni Focus: Sara Henkenius Kujawski, MN Supreme Court Greetings to current, former, and future I/O students! I’ve enjoyed hearing about the diverse career paths we’ve all taken since graduation from the I/O Program. After leaving MSU, I moved to Boston. I took a position at QualityMetric as an Outcomes Research Analyst where I worked on health outcomes research testing the validity, reliability, and utility of surveys that measured patient reported health status information. I also tested the efficacy of new drugs or treatments vs. the existing treatments in clinical drug trials and worked on computer adaptive testing, creating short form assessments with competing validity of the longer versions. From there, tired of a LONG commute, I moved on to Genuity, the Internet backbone spin-off from the Bell Atlantic and GTE merger which became Verizon and Genuity. There I worked as a Human Resources Metrics Specialist developing and measuring HR balanced scorecards, managed the Corporate Leadership Council Employee Preferences Survey, and developing custom surveys for the organization. In 2003, I moved back to MN and spent a few months contracting until I landed at Opal In-Home Services. As HR Director I gained invaluable experience in leading a department and rounding out my human resources expertise. At this time I was given the opportunity to participate in The Strategic Roundtable, a leadership development peer group. While I loved working for this organization, eventually I felt it was time to move on. I took a job at the MN Supreme Court where I started out in compensation and classification, performing job analyses on individuals as well as class-wide studies and job evaluations. I developed an HR needs assessment which measured the needs of a diversified HR group statewide. A little over a year later, I was promoted to HR Manager of the Minnesota Judicial Center and have been in this role ever since. I feel fortunate to hold a position that utilized both my HR and I/O backgrounds. I manage the HR functions for the MN Supreme Court, the MN Court of Appeals, the State Court Administrator’s Office (central office of the courts), the Office of Professional Responsibility (where one can submit complaints against attorneys) and the Board of Legal Education (administers State bar exam and tracks attorney licenses and education credits). In addition, I perform special projects, most recently leading a workgroup in developing a new competency framework for our performance management system, consulting on a broad scale study of converting 300 contractors to 150 employees, working with the results of our first ever all employee survey, and strategic HR planning during the state budget crisis. I absolutely love my job and feel that my time at MSU helped prepare me for the challenges and opportunities I’ve faced in my career. I currently live in South Minneapolis with my son, Murphy who is 4 years old. Students and faculty serve as consultants to local and national organizations providing HR and research consulting services. Faculty and students donate their time and we use the funds from the projects to pay for student trips, activities, and equipment. This year, OERG funds helped pay for office equipment , SIOP, IOOB, site visits, speakers, and international trips. Some of our clients and research partners appear below. Winter 2008 Page 5 Movers and Shakers 2009 Torie Lynch is now HR Director at Central Montana Medical Center in Lewistown, MT. In addition, she was married in April 2009 and she is expecting her first baby in April 2010. Teresa Hopke is now Senior Director of Talent Management at RSM McGladrey. She had a baby in January. Jodi Toman Zell and her husband Adam, welcomed their second son, Leo in March 2009. Darren Geary (right) works in human resources with Venoco Inc. Dr. Mindy Bennet Moye is at John Deere and is the Manager of Employee Engagement. Dan DeNeui was married this summer. He is on the faculty at Southern Oregon University. He and Megan are expecting their first baby in July. Crystal Newman got married in October to Clint Pulk, She is now Crystal Pulk. Tera Brown King is now a Wellness Analyst for Hennepin County Health Works. Carolyn Catenhuaser moved to Angola in north east Indiana. She is working remotely. Jeremy Jones (left) moved to Virginia where he is working as a consultant for Federal Management Partners. Kerry Moechnig was married October 10 to Brian Studer. Dr. Kevin Meyer works for Hogan Assessments and recently got the high score on Big Buck Hunter (this is being contested by John Zehr). Andrew Preissner and his wife had a baby in June. Janette Donnovan got married to Adam Bell. Janette Bell is still with C2 Technologies where she is a Senior HR Analyst. Lexi Tange moved from Reno to Rapid City SD. She is now a Consultant for First American Title Co. She and Jack will be married June 2010 in Jamaica. Adam Soderlind was married in Mexico February 2009 to Brynn. He is Advising Supervisor at the Harold Abel School of Psychology and he started the PhD program in Industrial Organizational Psychology at Capella in the Fall of 2009. Jean Sears Capra is now Talent Consultant for Medtronic’s Marketing Leadership and Development Rotation Program (LDRP). Dr. Ashley Guidroz is a Research Consultant at Denison Consulting. Scott McAtee is in Tulsa, OK working in Human Resources for Healthcare Innovations. Christina Mcguire is LifeSkills Program Trainer at the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort. Pari Becker is expecting a baby in February. Andy Dybvig moved to General Mills where he is Sr. Associate, Analytical Innovation and Experimentation. Nikki Miller Moore and Brian Miller welcomed Henry Littlefield Miller on April 21, 2009. Wendy Wright Zeller had a second child, Elise Caroline, on September 3rd, 2009. Marty Weiland and his wife had their second child, Kaia Grace, on Jan 2, 2009. Marty works as Senior Operations Analyst at DeCare Dental. He Completed Ironman Arizona on Nov 22. Sarah Nolte Krantz had a baby girl December 2009. Lance and Anna Andrews had a baby girl, Finley Wynn, in February. Raman Grover was married to Sonika Pahwa, a computer programmer, in the ancient city of Kurukshetra in India. Raman works for Statistics Canada . Ryan Riley was promoted to Senior Associate at ICF International. Page 6 I/O Update The I/O Program is working with john Ahlberg and Fred McGrath testing a new technology that will bring the outdoors to your home or office. vSkapes has supplied the OERG with generous grant to test the new technology. We will complete a service learning project for the Yachana foundation. The trip will focus on eco-business, self-sustaining schools, and economic development. We will be working at a school that is a twohour boat ride up the Amazon. We will visit Quito, Coca, and Galapagos. There are still a few spots available so call Dan if you are interested in spending a couple weeks on the equator. Psychological Frontiers: Exploring Human Behavior The Psychology Department is starting a radio show. Dawn Albertson, Dan Sachau and Emily Stark are producing a radio series for KMSU. The show is comprised of a series of two minute clips about psychological research. Our goal is to bring the science of psychology to the general public. Listen for the show Wednesdays and Thursdays during the school year.
