Since that time, I have had the privilege of visiting about 75 churches (speaking or preaching in many of them) and have been overwhelmed with how the area is embracing the Scranton Rescue Mission and the Wyoming Valley Rescue Mission. To date, about thirty area churches have provided a meal to the poor and homeless via the SRM, and we have five churches faithfully involved with the WVRM. In this newsletter, I simply want to say thank you. You are making a difference in the lives of hurting people. Thank you for supporting our golf tournament (we raised almost $4,000), preaching, leading worship, providing food, praying for, and financially supporting this good work! Northeast Pennsylvania is a better place because of you. When Jesus called his disciples, he told them “you will see even greater things.” I promise you — the best is yet to come! CHAPLAIN’S CORNER LADIES’ AUXILIARY I am thankful for the privilege of ministering at the mission. Since starting in May, God has blessed me with opportunities to minister to so many different people through preaching, counseling, leading a Chaplain Dave counsels Bible study, and conversation during the with a young man at the Scranton Rescue Mission meal. I have also been able to work with many brothers and sisters from different churches. It has been great to see how God works in people’s lives and how the body of Christ can work together. In my ministry I want to live out the words of Paul in Acts 20:24: “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace.” I would greatly appreciate your prayers for the ministry of the Scranton Rescue Mission. Worshipping the Lord, David Rodgers We are so thankful for the opportunity to serve the SRM this holiday season. It has been exciting to plan a fun time for the clients attending this year’s Thanksgiving meal, Friday, November 28. We are looking forward to making this a “family party” filled with games, crafts, snacks, devotional, and holiday meal. We are also looking for organizations that would be willing to help restock our shelves with canned foods and goods. If you have a Bible club, Awana club, school, Boy Scout club, Girl Scout club, or want to help as an individual, we would appreciate all your help. Just contact us for details. Our next scheduled meeting is November 2 at 3:00 p.m. at the Scranton Rescue Mission. We will be discussing some fundraising ideas and our Christmas celebration. If you are interested, please contact Melanie Schultz at 570-487-1774. We would love to have you join us. 4TH ANNUAL CELEBRATION BANQUET 12/2/08 12 NOON & 6:30 PM SRM 2 This year’s special guest will be David Pendleton. Dorothy Sweeney first heard about the Scranton Rescue Mission through Parker Hill Community Church where she attends regularly. Soon after she heard about the rescue mission she decided she would attend a service there with the desire to help in any way that she could. Her heart went out to the poor and homeless people that came through the doors of the mission. She volunteered at the mission frequently helping to set up in the kitchen, serving food, and cleaning up after the meal, but most often you would find her helping with the children, which brought her great joy. In addition, she greatly enjoyed meeting members of other churches and fellowshipping with them. Dorothy said that spending time at the mission made her feel needed and she is thankful for the opportunity to serve the Lord there. Unfortunately, Dorothy has recently been in and out of the hospital and hasn’t been able to serve at the mission, which she misses very much. She cannot wait to return so that she can once again help minister to the needs of the poor and homeless physically, emotionally, and spiritually. We miss her smile and gentle spirit and it is our prayer that Dorothy is restored to health soon and is able to join us again at the Scranton Rescue Mission. It has been a blessing for Dorothy to serve at the rescue mission and Dorothy has surely been a blessing to the people whose lives she has touched in Scranton.
