W BGO’s Kids Jazz Concert Series celebrated its 20th anniversary season this past April. It was the most successful yet thanks in large part to the new Transportation Fund from the Agnes Varis Trust; supporting affordable access to the arts, education, and healthcare. The Varis grant enabled WBGO to fund Essex County, NJ groups, like Pride Academy Charter School and Arc of Essex County, so they could rent vehicles to transport 4 Upbeat July/August 2013 students to WBGO’s free concerts. This opportunity grew audiences at each of the five free concerts, and further spread WBGO’s mission among families and youth organizations in New Jersey. Audiences at multiple concerts this season pushed the limits of theater seating capacity providing a packed house full of energy for the performers; somehow Bobby Sanabria (April 6) and Ascención still found room for families to dance in the aisles to classical Latin jazz beats. Lauren Hooker (April 13) and her band continued the party with dancing and audience sing-a-longs through the history of jazz during WBGO’s first Kids Jazz Concert at Luna Stage’s new West Orange location. Mimi Jones (April 20) and her all female band turned kids into stars when they invited young audience members to improvise their own blues song on the microphone at the Montclair Art Museum. Lenny White (April 27) gave students inspiration to delve deeper www.wbgo.org July_Aug_13_Upbt_FNL.qxd:Jan_Feb10_Upbt_FNLv50.qxd 6/7/13 6:16 PM Page 5 kidsjazz into jazz showcasing two teenage powerhouses, accompanying him on stage at the Newark Museum. Families were graciously invited to visit the Museum for free following the show to participate in hands-on activities with the Museum’s monthly “Make-it, Take-it Saturday” event. For many of the students attending the concert series through the Transportation Fund, the Kids Jazz Concert Series was the first live music performance they had ever attended. Students with NJAfter3 said they felt like VIPs at NJPAC’s stately Victoria Hall when following the show they got to meet the artist Michael Wolff (May 4) with his son, Hollywood star and fellow musician, Alex Wolff for autographs in the lobby. Kids who came to the concerts received mini instruments and T-shirts, also pro- www.wbgo.org This opportunity grew audiences at each of the five free concerts, and further spread WBGO’s mission among families and youth organizations in New Jersey. vided by the Agnes Varis Trust, to remember the concert long into the next season of the Kids Jazz Concert Series. Any groups working with Essex County, NJ youth who would like to be considered for the next round of Kids Jazz Concert Series Transportation Funding should send their email address, contact information, and organization name to [email protected]. Applications and more information will be available during the summer and e-mailed to all interested parties. Groups working with families or parents are also encouraged to apply.
