Many of our Studio art classes visit the Gallery during the session and artworks in the exhibitions become sources of inspiration when creating art in class. We’ll use many materials to make paintings, sculptures, collage and drawings inspired by some of our favorite animals. Ages 3-4 / Allison Behrstock Colorful Collage W15. 3 4 – 5:30 pm We’ll tear, cut, rip and paste to make colorful masterpieces. This art form has endless possibilities for artistic expression. We’ll look at many artists who use collage to inspire our creations. They’ll discover pirates, sailboats, buried treasures and sea creatures. With clay, paint and found materials, they’ll use their imaginations to create exciting projects. Goodnight Moon Lunch Bunch W15.9 Noon – 2 pm Twinkle, twinkle little art! We’ll use many materials to make art inspired by the night. From the moon and stars to animals who come out only at night, we’ll look at the many friendly parts of nighttime. Don’t forget your midnight snacks! They’ll use many materials to experiment with the many ways to make art kinetic. They’ll look at artists who have figured out how to make their art move. They’ll also look at photographs from the Hubble and Kepler telescopes to inspire their drawings, paintings, and sculptures. A class for toddlers (ages 22-36 months) and parents. Find out more on page 19. Ages 3-4 / Lindsay Kessner Train Time Lunch Bunch W15.13 Noon – 2 pm Students will look at many types of trains, from old timey locomotives to high speed models. They’ll draw railroads, sculpt steam engines and paint subways. All aboard! Don’t forget your lunch! 05 Ages 3-4 / Lindsay Kessner Animals in the Forest W15.14 4 – 5:30 pm We’ll read fables and fairytales about animals who live in the forest, then make clay sculptures, furry masks, puppets and wearable art inspired by the animals in the stories. Preschool and beginning classeS Ages 3-4 / Ruby Osorio My Paintings W15.15 4 – 5:30 pm We’ll explore paintings, pictures and stories and the places they take us. Then using many colors of paint, and many ways to paint, we will create our own paintings to display at home! Ages 5-6 / Sandra Gallegos Animals in Art Lunch Bunch W15.16 Noon – 2 pm Students will look at different ways artists draw, paint and sculpt animals. They’ll read and create stories about their favorite animals and memorialize them in an art piece. Don’t forget your lunch! Ages 3-4 / Naomi Buckley Costume Party W15.17 4 – 5:30 pm Students will create masks, magic hats, capes and other fun costumes to transform themselves. They’ll look at cultural events around the world for inspiration and insight. They’ll draw, paint and sculpt animals they’d like to have as pets. Ages 5-6 / Jacob Yanes Creating Characters W15.19 4 – 5:30 pm In this beginning drama class, students will explore character, movement and theatrical expression through exercises and games. They’ll create their own characters using stories, animals, objects and of course their imaginations. The many characters will be revealed for family and friends on the last day of class, Friday, March 20. Students will learn traditional drawing and painting techniques by using their pets and other animals as a source of inspiration. Students will explore character, movement and theatrical expression through exercises and games. They’ll create backdrops and costumes, learn lines and bring a story or myth to life in a play for family and friends on Monday, March 30. Ages 6-8 / Sandra Gallegos Ages 7-11 / Grace Lacques Epic Animation W15. 21 Drawing & Painting W15. 23 4 – 5:30 pm 4 – 5:30 pm Students will work as a team to create an epic seven minute animated movie. They’ll brainstorm a fantastical adventure, write a script, and create elaborate sets. Students will learn to use special effects and a variety of stop motion techniques including claymation, collage, drawing and real world video! Students will learn the basics of drawing and painting. While experimenting with color theory and mixing paint, they’ll use various materials to paint with and paint on. Ages 7-9 / David P. Earle Ages 9-11 / Patricia Liverman tuesd ay s January 13 — March 17 Food Truck W15. 24 4 – 5:30 pm Students will build a menu out of cardboard, then sculpt and paint clay to serve up on their own food truck. This multimedia class will make your mouth water with colorful fake foods that look good enough to eat. Ages 6-8 / Onya Hogan-Finlay Time Travelers W15. 25 Discover the history of art by traveling through centuries of artworks. Using many art materials, old and new, students will make paintings and sculptures inspired by modern masters, cave painters, ancient architecture and archaeological treasures. 08 4 – 5:30 pm Ages 7-9 / Patricia Liverman 4 – 5:30 pm Students will make simple digital projects in a coding program written for kids. They will apply the logic of coding to make collaborative drawings, sculptures, performances, and secret messages. Using many materials, we will discover scale by drawing, painting, sculpting and then building to make our small ideas into large art. Students will look at artists who have used maquettes and miniatures throughout history. Students will learn how to use the potter’s wheel as well as some hand-building techniques to create functional and nonfunctional ceramic pieces. They’ll also explore various types of clay, learn methods of glazing and make different types of surface texture. Then they’ll use these ways to create their own art by the people, of the people, for the people. While experimenting with color theory and mixing paint, they’ll use various materials to paint with and paint on. They’ll use both science and imagination to discover how photography can be an extension of themselves. Ages 9-11 / Allison Alford Frid ay s Ja n ua ry 1 6 — M a r c h 2 0 Fabric & Fiber W15. 34 Students will weave, sew, patch, felt, stuff, stiffen, cut and arrange fabric into sculptures, collages, wearable art and woven creations. 10 4 – 5:30 pm Ages 6-8 / Tracy Nakayama Comic Stories W15. 35 Students will imagine their own characters and then develop comics about themselves and the world around them. They’ll use many art materials to create visual stories inspired by comic artists such as “Peanuts” creator Charles Schultz. Ages 7-9 / Victoria Tao Collage Animation W15. 36 4 – 5:30 pm Students will bring collage to life with stop motion animation. They will first create characters and environments from magazines, book illustrations, patterned paper and paint and then add stories and narratives through animation. Ages 8-11 / David P. Extended class time allows students and instructors to engage in more ambitious explorations of concepts, creative expression, historical and cultural context, connections, relations, applications and materials. Limited to twelve students, classes allow for more individualized instruction. All students must be 12 years old by the first day of class. 11 Armory Art High studio classes are tuition-free during the school year. Ages 12-14 / Peter Sheldon ag es 12-14 wednesd ay s january 14 — Ma r ch 18 Stop Motion Animation W15.401 4 – 6 pm Students will be introduced to the A-Z of stop motion animation including techniques using claymation, cut paper, collage, drawing and pixilation. We will experiment using early methods to animate images such as zoetropes and flip books. We’ll look at the history of the art and artists who use old school animation while we animate for the sheer fun of it. Ages 12-14 / David P. Earle T hursd ay s Ja n ua ry 1 5 — M a r c h 19 Drawing & Painting W15.402 4 – 6 pm Students will learn drawing and painting concepts through viewing slides of contemporary and traditional paintings. Emphasis will be on exploration of composition, color, technique, subject and medium. They’ll use various drawing and painting materials. Students develop basic drawing and perceptual skills and begin creating an art portfolio. Instruction covers color and design principles, drawing from observation, and the vocabulary of art. Students will develop skills, creativity, and aesthetic sensibilities, which aid in establishing a foundation for all visual art pursuits. They’ll explore different types of photographic techniques, use of cameras, processing black and white film and darkroom use. Continuing students will have an opportunity to further focus on building their technical and compositional skills. Cameras and supplies will be provided. Ages 12-14 / Laura Parker art high for middle school 4 – 6 pm art high for high school ag es 15 -18 13 Art High at the Armory offers various opportunities for high school students to gain valuable art experiences. Instruction concentration is in two areas: visual arts and media arts. Depending on student needs and level of exposure, these opportunities include: Armory Art High classes, Armory partner classes, Armory adult classes in painting, drawing, ceramics, digital art, and more. Students work with professional artists in various disciplines who are experts in bringing their experience into the classroom. They’ll create narratives, choose locations, make sets, and develop the visual aesthetic of the film while learning to position the equipment needed to capture it all. Film approaches will include narrative, experimental and animation. They will examine a variety of moving images, such as music videos, experimental animations, art installations, and films. At the end of the class, students will have a screening of their films. Workshops include simple drawing and cartooning using Adobe Illustrator to more complex workshops using Adobe Photoshop. The emphasis for the class will be on personal creativity and the use of computers to create a portfolio of expressive work. Students will learn to use digital cameras and scanners as well as Mac computers. Students will gain a basic understanding of black and white photography. They’ll explore different types of photographic techniques, use of cameras, processing black and white film and darkroom use. Continuing students will have an opportunity to further focus on building their technical and compositional skills. Cameras and supplies will be provided. Using basic, intermediate and advanced hand-building and throwing techniques, they’ll be encouraged to create functional ceramics while examining the need for functional pottery and the aesthetics that surround presentation and consumption. Students working on sculptural pieces will be encouraged to experiment with scale, surface design and surface decoration. They will learn drawing skills from simple sketches to finished works through developing drawing techniques such as how to create space, value, form and composition. Painting skills taught will include color mixing, mark making, canvas stretching, and conceptual aspects of developing compositions. An emphasis will be placed on choosing subject matter and articulating individual visions. 14 1:30 – 3:30 pm classeS for adults Looking for a creative challenge or simply a way to express yourself? Armory classes offer adults an outlet for their artistic needs. Develop new skills and find hidden talents. Beginning and advanced students are given individualized instruction to achieve their goals. Most importantly, you’ll have an outlet for your personal artistic expression. You’re welcome in our Studio. Through the Art High program, students 16-18 years old can register for Adult classes. For approval from the Studio Director, call or email 626.792.5101 x131 & cwhitney@ armoryarts.org. Enrollment is on a first come first serve basis, limit one class per student per session. Students will learn additional techniques through the use of glazes and various forms of surface decoration. A variety of types of clay and glazes will be used. This class was inspired by a bunch of friends and now it’s a Studio tradition, so bring a friend or make a new one; this class is open for all! They’ll make relief blocks, image transfers, monotypes, drypoints, and silk aquatints. Most of these can be printed without a press! Learn how to hand-set type and print on different letterpresses. Combine text and image to design and create letterhead, postcards, note cards, announcements, posters and more. 6:30 – 9 pm We are pleased to offer classes in our state of the art digital lab. Running Photoshop CS6, this class will cover all of the basics in beginning Photoshop. Whether you are simply looking to learn the fundamentals of editing your digital images or wanting to acquire the necessary entry level job skills, this class offers you a solid foundation. The class is set up to facilitate multiple learning styles and levels. This is a great foundation class for all! Over the past century, we have seen great technological advances from images on film to digital images. How does this change in technology influence artists’ ideas and art work? We’re familiar with the digital image, so we’ll rediscover the magical and alchemical beauty of black and white beginning in the dark room. This class will offer an introduction to basic technical skills of black and white photography, with an emphasis on camera operation and the darkroom-made print. It is open to beginners as well as students with a basic understanding of line and shape. Students will focus on drawing from observation using hand held objects, still life arrangements and have one class with a live model. Students will experiment with various traditional and nontraditional drawing techniques to develop individual styles including exploration of abstract compositions. No experience in drawing or painting is necessary and individual expression is encouraged. Contemporary methods and artists will be explored with an emphasis on color, composition, space and texture.
