Dear Hatfield Residents and Friends:
hope everyone had a great summer and enjoyed the Hatfield Aquatic Center,
School Road and Clemens Parks, the Arboretum, Nature Center, walking and
biking trails and everything else that our community has to offer.
I
Now that fall is quickly approaching, it is time for us to start looking ahead to
next year and begin the 2016 budget process. It may not be the most exciting thing
we do in local government, but is it arguably the most important. We encourage
you to attend a budget workshop and let us know what is important to you and
where you want your tax dollars spent.
I am proud of how my fellow Commissioners and I have approached spending
over the past several years. Anyone who has participated in our budget
discussions knows that we make every effort to reduce costs without reducing
services, and we have significantly increased our investment in infrastructure
throughout the Township. Unfortunately, Pennsylvania leads the nation in the
number of bridges classified as “structurally deficient.” Hatfield Township is doing
its part to shed that moniker. Over the next year or so, four bridges will be repaired
in the Township – one owned by the Commonwealth (Orvilla Rd), one owned by
Montgomery County (Line Lexington Rd) and two owned by Hatfield (Walnut St.
and Trewigtown Rd). Although the construction and detours will cause a short
term headache for motorists, knowing that the Hatfield Township taxpayers will
only be responsible for roughly 10% of a $4 million investment should help
alleviate that pain. Through grants and partnerships, Hatfield’s staff and
consultants have been able to significantly reduce the financial burden on the
taxpayers. A big thank you to our staff and consultants for making that possible!
Lastly, I want to personally thank my fellow Commissioner, Scott Brown, for his
twelve years of dedication and commitment to Hatfield Township. Commissioner
Brown decided not to seek another elected term and we will miss his experience,
knowledge, and sense of humor. I have truly enjoyed working with him for the
last six years, and I will always admire his conviction and commitment to Hatfield
Township.
I hope you all have a great fall and winter holiday season. Go Eagles!

atfield residents elect five Commissioners to four-year terms of office.
Each Commissioner represents a geographical “Ward” of the
township. The Commissioners are part time volunteers who make
decisions on behalf of the 17,000+ residents in Hatfield Township. The
Board of Commissioners meets twice a month to discuss and adopt
policies for Hatfield’s local government services. These policy decisions
include items such as land development applications, road improvements,
public safety matters, capital improvement projects, and open space
preservation. While each year may bring different projects and policies,
the overarching goal of the Board of Commissioners is always to promote
the health, safety, and welfare of the community.

Commissioner Brown Will Not Seek a Fourth Term
esidents in Hatfield's Ward 1 will have a new Commissioner in 2016 for the first time
in 12 years. At a public meeting last spring, Commissioner Scott Brown announced
that he will not seek a fourth term. During Commissioner Brown's tenure on the board,
Hatfield Township underwent significant changes. As the board president for five years,
Commissioner Brown was instrumental in many projects, most notably the construction
of the Hatfield Aquatic Center.
R
"One of my proudest moments as a Commissioner was when we cut the ribbon for the
new facility. I'm not a swimmer, but I always felt the residents of Hatfield deserved a top
notch facility," said Commissioner Brown.
In 2015, the Aquatic Center was named the best public pool in Montgomery County by
Montco Happenings Magazine.
A steadfast supporter of open space acquisition, walking and biking trails, and parks initiatives, Commissioner
Brown fondly recalls the development of the Frick's and Chestnut Street Trails, enhancement of School Road Park,
and the creation of the dog park.
Due to his strong belief in public service, Commissioner Brown
pursued a career in education. After a successful stint as a mathematics
teacher at North Penn High School for four years and then 35 years at
Plymouth Whitemarsh High School in the Colonial School District,
Brown saw being a Commissioner as an opportunity to continue serving
the public and the community. After being elected in 2003, Brown was
motivated solely by wanting to make Hatfield Township a better place
to live. He credits his spouse, Sandra, for supporting and encouraging
him to get involved.
Brown likened his experience as a Commissioner to being in a canoe with four other people and trying to get
everyone to paddle in the same direction. "Even if that didn't always happen, I continued to paddle," said
Commissioner Brown. One example where the paddling was not in sync and what Brown references as his biggest
disappointment was when the open space referendum failed to pass in 2008.
Land development was also an interest to Commissioner Brown. “Hatfield
was too accommodating to developers in the past,” he said. Commissioner
Brown was the board president when Hatfield Pointe was approved and he
is proud of the efforts the board encouraged the developers to make.
“Aesthetically speaking, that is one of the nicest Lowes you will find,” he said.
That project also includes trails that Commissioner Brown pushed for
throughout the approval process.
Commissioner Brown says he will miss the people the most. “We are
blessed to have great staff and committed residents.” He will continue to live
in Hatfield and stay involved. "I'll always be interested in ways to make our
town better, such as solving traffic issues, promoting open space, and
bringing people together and encouraging diversity.”
As for advice for any newly elected official, Brown suggests that they try
not to take things personally, be open to new ideas, promote the things you
believe in and realize that nothing can be accomplished without compromise.
Although the canoe may look the same, Hatfield Township will be without
one of its most experienced and committed paddlers in 2016.
A Message from the Hatfield Chamber of Commerce President
Did you know that there are over 1200 businesses in
Hatfield Township and Hatfield Borough?!
That’s a lot of businesses when you stop and think about it. But in the internet era,
when it’s so simple to Google something and press the buy button, it’s easy to forget
about our local businesses. I will be the first to admit that I do this frequently, mostly
because of the convenience. But we should really stop to question if this is the right thing to do. If you could get the
product or service you need from a local “guy” rather than someone on the other side of the country, or maybe
even the world, shouldn’t we all give it a try? After all, even if it may cost a few cents more, you will be supporting
the local economy.
Our goal at the Hatfield Chamber of Commerce is to promote our local businesses, which in turn helps the folks
that live right here in our own community. So the next time you need a product or service, before you go to Amazon
or Google, check out the members of the Hatfield Chamber at www.hatfieldchamber.com. Just click on the “Our
Members” box at the top-right side of the page to access our membership database and digital directory.
It won’t cost you anything more to check them out, other than maybe a few extra clicks, I promise.
George Bardissi, President, Hatfield Chamber of Commerce
We extend a special thanks to the business and professional
members of our community whose support through
advertising has made publication of this newsletter
possible at no cost to taxpayers. Please support
the local businesses that support the Township.

all can be challenging to those faced with excess grass clippings, tree branches, and leaves. On the other
hand, it’s a great time to be outside doing projects and grounds care. The below information is a guide to
grounds keeping actions residents can take on their own. They are designed to bring more gain and less pain
to the individual, and greater benefit to the community.

DOWNLOAD FIRE SAFETY TIP SHEETS
Following simple safety
tips can prevent many fires
and accidents. To help
residents stay informed the
Fire Marshal has created
safety tip sheets you can
download and print from the
township’s safety and code
department’s website.
Do not blow your grass clippings into the street or dump any debris into the storm water inlets. Grass and
debris accumulates around inlets and prevents the proper flow of storm water into the storm water system.
Turf care professionals are strong advocates of “grasscycling,” leaving clippings on the lawn. Do not dump
grass clippings, branches, or leaves on public open space and township property. The density of a man-made
dump pile means it will not biodegrade naturally; rather it causes damage to the land and, if near water, to
the waterway.
For branches: utilize the township’s monthly Tree Branch Collection, where staff will take small tree branches
at the Public Works Complex 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the 3rd Saturday monthly.
Put them on your refrigerator,
review them with your kids, and
share them with everyone!
For leaves: purchase biodegradable brown paper bags at the Township Municipal building, (4 bags
for $1.00). Check the township website to learn when curbside pick-up will take place.

Yard Maintenance 101
e thank residents for doing their part by keeping their lawns clean and mowed,
(it’s also the law). Here are a few tips for maintaining a beautiful and
earth-friendly yard.
W
GRASS: Throughout the year, homeowners inevitably find themselves with the
dilemma on how to dispose of excess grass clipping or tree branches from their
property. Hatfield Township wanted to ensure all residents were aware of the options
to properly dispose of this waste. In respect to grass clippings, and as a friendly
reminder to everyone, blowing your grass clippings into the street is not an accepted
practice in Hatfield Township. This act causes more work and troubles than you may
think. Such grass accumulates around the inlets and precludes the proper flow of
stormwater into the sewer system. Furthermore, the act of blowing grass into the
streets cause for additional work by the Public Works Department to clear the inlet.
BRANCHES: To properly remove tree branches consider coordinating your trimming of trees with the township’s
monthly Tree Branch Collection. This service provides you the chance to bring small tree branches to the township
Public Works building (located on Unionville Pike). This service is provided on the 3rd Saturday of every month,
year round, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. If that does not work for you, then please work with your private waste hauler to
remove the branches, and stay tuned to the Township E-News for other potential options.
LEAVES: As you begin to clean up your leaves this fall remember to package them in biodegradable brown paper
bags (4 bags for $1.00). Please check the township website to learn when curbside pick up will take place. For those
residents that have public open space adjacent to their property or easements near local water tributaries, do not
use this area to dump branches, leaves, or grass clippings. Though such an act may seem marginal at the time,
such debris causes substantial challenges to the waterways in the township during heavy rain conditions.
To keep up on the latest in yard collection services in Hatfield Township, sign up for our monthly Township
E-Newsletter at www.hatfieldtownship.org or Follow Us on Twitter @HatfieldPA.

PA STATE CHAMPIONS!
Snow Removal Information
he Public Works Department is responsible for salting and snowplowing all township-owned roadways and
facilities. The salting, or de-icing process starts soon after the snow begins to fall. Major roadways are
continuously plowed until the snow has stopped. After the snow storm has fully stopped, all roadways are plowed
back to the curb and re-salted if needed. If the storm is large enough, roadways may be plowed several times. It
takes an average of 8 to 10 hours for the Public Works Department to completely plow and clear all township roads
after the storm has completely ended.

DO YOU KNOW THAT STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE NOT NEW TO HATFIELD BASEBALL?
In 2009, 2013, and now again in 2015 the North Penn High School Knights Baseball team became PENNSYLVANIA
STATE CHAMPIONS!!! The Knights are now in a league of their own as the first PA AAAA school to win three state
titles.
From the team that just won – 17 players listed on the playoff roster have played for Hatfield Connie Mack & Legion
Baseball.
Our Hatfield Players include: Mike Christy, Douglas Apple, Collin Healey, James Witner, Matt Marino, Zach Zeigler,
Zach Coll, Greg Kerr, John Posavec, Grant Silhanek, Zach Thomas, Travis Cook, Logan Leslie, Kadar Namey, Jon
Udzinski, Jake Schuster and Zach Farrell.
Hatfield Connie Mack & Legion Baseball is known for excellence and determination - Skills are honed, the game
is learned and friendships are formed and kept for years to come.
Hatfield Connie Mack & Legion Baseball have been part of the Hatfield Township and Borough community for over
40 years. We have shared with the township in building the fields at School Road Park – now known as one of the
best places to play in all of the North Penn area.
Our players are from all over Hatfield, plus a few from the Towamencin Township area as they join our ranks at
the Legion level.
Many past players have gone on to play college baseball and even a few have been drafted by the MLB – one,
Eric Ruth, is still active and plays for the Trenton Thunder in the Yankees organization! College coaches are often
seen at Hatfield Legion games – they know where to see the talent.
The Hatfield Legion team calls School Road Park home – games will continue through July and hopefully into
August.

The “HATFIELD” North Penn High School Knights

For your safety and the safety of your family,
friends, pedestrians, and other motorists, please
remember:
e Please be patient until we get to your street
The Hatfield Legion team calls School Road Park home – games will continue through July and hopefully into
August.
and wait one hour after you see a plow truck on
your street before commencing shoveling your
driveways and sidewalks. Sometimes the plow
truck operators might need to make one more
pass during large storms to complete your street.
e When shoveling, snow blowing, or plowing your
driveway and sidewalks, do not place the snow
back into the street. (Yes, people do this as funny
as it sounds) This is against the law and it leaves
a road hazard for other motorist and pedestrians,
leaving you liable if someone gets hurt.
e Remove all obstacles from the edge of roadway
(i.e. basketball hoops, trash & recycling cans etc.).
According to the Township Zoning Codes, these
items are not permitted in the public rights-of-way
at any time.
e Remove your vehicle from the roadway after one

Township Ordinance. This will prevent you from
being ticketed and or even towed.

Maintenance No-No’s & Earth Friendly Efficiencies
Fire Safety Tips from the Fire Marshal
all can be challenging to those faced with excess grass clippings, tree branches, and leaves. On the other
hand, it’s a great time to be outside doing projects and grounds care. The below information is a guide to
grounds keeping actions residents can take on their own. They are designed to bring more gain and less pain
to the individual, and greater benefit to the community.
F
DOWNLOAD FIRE SAFETY TIP SHEETS
Following simple safety
tips can prevent many fires
and accidents. To help
residents stay informed the
Fire Marshal has created
safety tip sheets you can
download and print from the
township’s safety and code
department’s website.
Do not blow your grass clippings into the street or dump any debris into the storm water inlets. Grass and
debris accumulates around inlets and prevents the proper flow of storm water into the storm water system.
Turf care professionals are strong advocates of “grasscycling,” leaving clippings on the lawn. Do not dump
grass clippings, branches, or leaves on public open space and township property. The density of a man-made
dump pile means it will not biodegrade naturally; rather it causes damage to the land and, if near water, to
the waterway.
For branches: utilize the township’s monthly Tree Branch Collection, where staff will take small tree branches
at the Public Works Complex 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the 3rd Saturday monthly.
Put them on your refrigerator,
review them with your kids, and
share them with everyone!
For leaves: purchase biodegradable brown paper bags at the Township Municipal building, (4 bags
for $1.00). Check the township website to learn when curbside pick-up will take place.
These tips sheets are currently
available online:

Go Eagles!
