A Word from Our President ... Laura Henninger
Happy Spring! I hope by now all of you have been able
to take time to enjoy the arrival of the pleasant weather.
No matter how stressed we get this time of year, there’s
nothing like a beautiful Spring day to raise the spirits!
CPWN’s April meeting boasted another record
attendance – 135 members and guests for a regular
monthly meeting. We enjoyed a lovely lunch at the
Wetlands Golf Course, and an informative presentation
from David Craig, Harford County Executive. Mr. Craig
gave us an update on Harford County, and provided us
with insight on the direction in which Harford County is
heading. The upcoming influx of jobs to Aberdeen Proving
Ground as a result of the Base Realignment and Closure
(“BRAC”) plan will have a significant impact on Harford
County’s future. As professional women, we are uniquely
Laura Henninger
poised to take advantage of the many opportunities which
will present themselves. If you would like more information
about BRAC, or about advertising your business to new residents of Harford County, check out

Tickets are now on sale for our 10th Anniversary Gala. The Gala will be held on Friday, June 13th
at the Maryland Golf and Country Club. Be sure to get your tickets early – this event is very
likely to sell out.
Our May meeting will be a Meet the Authors Night. This has been a popular event in the past.
Various local authors will be on hand to tell us about themselves and their writing. Books will
be available for sale, and a raffle will be held to benefit the Harford County Library. Hope to see
you there!

MARKETING: INVESTING IN BUSINESS GROWTH!
Without much hesitation, most of us would
agree that one of the most important
ingredients of a successful business is its
customers or clients. For that reason, the

RESTAURANT REVIEW -- THE OPEN DOOR CAFE’
It is always fun to try new places to eat. We were not
disappointed when we decided to try this new restaurant – The
Open Door Café located in the Bel Air Town Center by the AAA
office. Just to make sure, I went back five times alone and with
others!
Whether you just stop in for a great cup of coffee [or a meal],
I liked the Cafe au lait (of course!). They offer a large choice of
fancy coffees and pastries, hot drinks (like hot steamed apple juice
and cinnamon topped with whipped cream) and cold drinks. But
this is just the beginning…
In the charming dining room painted to reflect a street scene
(one side of the room has life size lovely houses done in realistic
Trompe-l’oeil, the other shows a store front) when you sit at the
wrought iron tables and chairs you can relax and pretend you are
on vacation while you enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner.
The Open Door Café offers something for every taste from
soups to salads to sandwiches to specials each day at lunch or
dinner. During one of our visits in the back room while we were
attending a meeting there, we sat next to a table of seven young
women (a bridal party) who were enjoying lunch. They told me
they loved the atmosphere and liked their sandwich and salads.
Fresh flowers are placed on each table and the well-dressed
waitresses are very pleasant and friendly.
Having had lunch several times there and trying several
sandwiches and quiches’, I decided to have dinner. I found that
at 6:00 p.m., there were several tables filled already. A group of
six senior citizens were enjoying each other’s company. Three
by Daniele Fleischer
people were finishing their meal. Several couples were involved
in romantic conversation and several single ladies were having an
early dinner after work. At the table next to mine, a couple was
complimenting the waitress on their soup. They told me they
were new in the area and they had had lunch there the week
before and decided to come back for dinner. They loved the
place!
At dinner time the hostess brings warm rolls and muffins in a
fabric-covered basket. Prices are varied from the soups, salads
and appetizers, starting at $2.25 for a cup of soup, to the filet
of beef at $22.00. The prices are moderate. You can try the
spaghetti Pomodoro for $10.00, which includes a garden salad
for $2.00 more, or you can add chicken or meatballs. The spinach
and sun dried tomato ravioli in creamy rose sauce with salad was
only $14.00. If you prefer, the teriyaki chicken with rice pilaf and
the vegetable of the day was only $14.00. Pineapple-stuffed pork
chops and bourbon pepper beef with garlic mashed potatoes
was $16.00. Other entres include short ribs for $18.00, shrimp
scampi for $16.00, and tarragon salmon for $17.00.
To tempt you, there is a revolving glass case displaying a large
choice of pastries, Chocolate Kahlua mousse cake, cheese cakes
of different flavors, a raspberry Linzer tart,Vaccaro’s cannoli (Little
Italy), coconut cake and many more. We think you will enjoy
this new and very convenient location. They accept major credit
cards. If you need a personal testimonial, ask Laura Henninger,
Sharon Epple, Marge Pearce and Renee McNally, all of whom have
had meetings there and enjoyed this new restaurant!

Breast Cancer: Before, During and After – By Melissa Barnickel, CPA, CSA
As many of you know I am a six-month breast cancer survivor. I
was diagnosed just prior to age 50. You just never know when
your health will change.
You can help prevent breast cancer by doing the
following:
• Eat well
• Exercise regularly
• Perform a monthly breast self-examination
• Maintain appropriate body weight
• Have a medical professional perform a
clinical breast examination every year after age
40, every three years prior to that age.
• Have a mammogram at age 40 and thereafter.
If there is family history of breast cancer
or other concerns, contact your doctor to

Summer is just around the corner, and many camps are currently

Slimming Down for Summer by Marge Pearce
With summer soon arriving, our thoughts are turning to the more
revealing summer fashions. Worried about all the bright colors
for spring and summer after hiding under black all winter? You
don’t have to dread showing more skin and wearing the new hot
brights if you know a few secrets for dressing slim.
Bright white is the hot fashion color this year. And lots of stripes
are in. The rule for stripes is vertical only for that slimming look.
Don’t wear white on the bottom. Team a great looking optic
white blouse or tee top with the slimming look of vertical striped
pants… short, long or in-between lengths. Just, remember…be
careful how you wear those stripes…vertical stripes only!
Here are a few “Summer Fashion Slimmers:”

Look for pants, shorts etc. with a flat paneled front. Or choose
a multi-colored skirt in darker shades. You can wear patterns or
florals in the darker shades for a new slimmer look.
Tops too bare for you? Just look for cap sleeves with scoop or
v-necks for a more elongated slimming look. Use some bright
colors underneath an airy, flowing jacket-style shirt over top of
pants or skirts.
When using the bright colors you can try all one color… again to
create the illusion of tall and thin. By wearing only one color head
to toe without a break in line, the eye sees a thinner you!

help. The Camponeschi family thanks you for all the prayers and
well wishes you have expressed for Bruce.
If you would like to make a contribution to help Bruce and his
family, a fund has been established in Bruce’s name to help with
the medical costs that are being incurred. Whatever you can
contribute will be greatly appreciated by the Camponeschi family.
Please make checks payable to Bruce Camponeschi Fund and mail
them to M&T Bank, 12 Office Street, Bel Air, MD 21014, Attn.:

Happy Spring! I hope by now all of you have been able
to take time to enjoy the arrival of the pleasant weather.
No matter how stressed we get this time of year, there’s
nothing like a beautiful Spring day to raise the spirits!
CPWN’s April meeting boasted another record
attendance – 135 members and guests for a regular
monthly meeting. We enjoyed a lovely lunch at the
Wetlands Golf Course, and an informative presentation
from David Craig, Harford County Executive. Mr. Craig
gave us an update on Harford County, and provided us
with insight on the direction in which Harford County is
heading. The upcoming influx of jobs to Aberdeen Proving
Ground as a result of the Base Realignment and Closure
(“BRAC”) plan will have a significant impact on Harford
County’s future. As professional women, we are uniquely

Hope to see
