‘Soap as Messenger’ Success Story
Dr. Bronner passed away peacefully Friday, March 7 , 1997.
Because of advanced Parkinsons’ he had spent the last three years
under the loving care of his wife Gladys, and caring nurses. During this
time the business has been run completely by his two sons, Jim and
Ralph, so there will be no break in continuity.

Dr. Bronner and his “Magic Soaps” have been written up
in many publications from “The Associated Press” to California
Magazine. His sons feel the following article is one of the best. It
was written by Heather Allison-Jenkins for a newsletter for home
soap makers put out by SunFeather Herbal Soap Company of
Potsdam, New York in January of 1997. *
Joining the ranks of natural soapcrafters takes heart,
dedication, imagination, and perhaps a desire to leave this world
at least a little better than when we arrived - if at all possible.
Imagine a man, an immigrant to America, who has been believing in
his Pure-Castile soaps for nearly 50 years, and who like his fellow
soapcrafters takes great pride in bringing to the public his simple
and pure products. Imagine the success of this one man - a humble
soapcrafter like you and me - growing to millions of dollars in soap
sales each year. Now imagine if you can that this man’s soap is not
his life’s work. It’s the label!
If you have ever read the label on a bottle of Dr. Bronner’s
Pure-Castile Soap, you surely remember doing so - even if it
happened decades ago. You may have said to yourself, “Whoever
wrote this had to have escaped from a mental hospital,” which
is entirely true, but at a closer glance the apparent madness of
Emanuel Bronner, 88, of Escondido, California, is in fact complete
sanity. While most of us soapcrafters who sell our precious soaps
are doing what we can to help our Earth by donating things to
peace-loving causes, Dr. Bronner has written his own peace plan.
The 15,000 plus minuscule words type-set in all directions on his
labels tell about it, his “All-One-God-Faith”, in which he hopes to
unite all mankind on “Spaceship Earth”.

“We’re All-ONE or NONE! ALL-ONE!” The style of this is
consistently sparse and direct. Much of Dr. Bronner’s philosophical
statement is inspired by the ancient scrolls of every religion, and
the lives and words of many great people living from before Christ
to the present.
What’s in the bottle is just as impressive. “Pure Castile Soap”,
“No Detergents”, “No Synthetics! None!”, “100% Cruelty Free!”.
The ingredient list is short and sweet, and only the finest pure oils
are used for scent and sensation.
Dr. Bronner (a self eschewed Master Chemist and Essene
Rabbi through his life’s own experiences) has, according to his
sons Ralph 60 of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin and Jim, 58 or
Escondido, California, who run the business now with about 20
wonderful and loyal employees, never stopped revising and honing
the label and the message it carries. “He has spent all of his life
working on the label,” says Ralph, of his father. Ralph worked with
his father over and over on the Moral ABC, the labels and with the
many writers of articles.
“My father in his day was so intense: ‘Ralph, you’re not my son
unless you memorize this label.” Which one? Each one was 3,000
words, and each one was different.” (There is a lot of repetition, but
each label is different on each type of soap: Peppermint, Almond,
Baby Supermild Unscented, Eucalyptus, Lavender, and Sal Suds
Organic Cleaner).
Jim, who as President, carries on the formulas and soap making,
is proud to be a fourth generation soap-maker master. His father
learned the trade from his strict, orthodox Jewish father in the
1920’s in Heilbronn, Germany. Dr. Bronner arrived in the States
in 1929 and bounced between soap consulting jobs for various
companies. Imagine the shock to the family when he married a
Catholic! This love dynamic in his life was the catalyst for his lifetime

search for religious truth from the Bible, Torah, Koran and many
other sources. By the late 40’s he was mixing up drums of his soap
with a broom handle in the cheap Los Angeles hotel room he was
living in. He was selling it after lectures about his peace plan and the
‘FULL TRUTHS’ he had come to understand could unite the entire
world. It was about that time that the idea presented itself to place
what he calls his “Moral ABC’s” -a complete version of this is now
available in book form - on a label.

obsessive need to spread the wealth he’s been blessed with, but it
is because he practices what he preaches. His life and his incredible
energy, outlook and drive can be seen in the statement he made to
his son Ralph years ago, “I’m the luckiest blind man in the world.”
Unfortunately, Dr. Bronner’s Moral ABC, which dealt with
everything from Spaceship Earth under One God, anti-communism,
ecological ideas, etc. was far ahead of its time and was not understood
by many. Through a series of tragic events he was forced into an
Elgin, Illinois mental institution against his will in 1946. Everything
from electric shock to rigid confinement was tried in order to “turn
him into a normal person.” Luckily, after six months and two failed
escape attempts, he succeeded in escaping to California without a
penny and where no one knew him. After sleeping penniless on the
roof of a YMCA with the pigeons, he finally earned some money
fighting forest fires as a volunteer. Here he started to make his
soaps and food products and use them to help spread the Moral
ABC. The soap became a messenger for his ideas.
“What is beautiful about my father is that he believes everything
on that label,” says Ralph who in the 60’s told his dad that no one
would read the Moral ABC, he should forget it, call the soap Mint
Glow and market it like the rest. Luckily his father didn’t listen.
What turned Ralph and others around was the impact the label
had on people all over the world. The Bronner’s get thousands
of letters. The one that impressed Ralph the most opened with,
“Dear Dr. Bronner, until I read your label I was an atheist” and
went on to ask for more of the Moral ABC. A woman in prison
in South Australia was so inspired by the label she wrote asking if
there was a book that could be sent. It was.
Since then, he has acquired a sort of cult following which
surged in the 60’s with the peace and Earth-loving hippies and
has continued on into the 80’s and 90’s with New Ager’s buying
the bulk of the over one million bottles hand packed annually. It
is also spreading among mainstream America and can be found in
outfitters supply stores and in every health food store. In New
York City it is highly prized by models and is found in the finest
cosmetic stores. Dr. Bronner himself has become somewhat of a
guru, and has been bestowed with the unofficial title of, ‘The Pope
of Soap’. Many fans have made the pilgrimage to his California
home - he’s not hard to find, his address and phone number are
printed on every label. Though the good Dr. suffers today from
total blindness (since 1974) and advanced Parkinson’s Disease, the
main office for the company is still in a room in his home.
While the label lists ten uses from shampoo to toothpaste,
laundry cleaner to bug repellent and plant cleaner to body massage,
customers swear there are hundreds more. Natural Health magazine
wrote in 1996, “while all sorts of companies have introduced “allnatural” soaps, none beats Dr. Bronner’s, particularly when it comes
to versatility: use it to clean your car, bathe pets, wash pesticides
from fruits and veggies and of course to keep your body clean.”
Not only has the soap been written up in hundreds of
mainstream publications from The Wall Street Journal” and the
“Associated Press” to “Dirt Rider” and “Vogue”, but the label has
been called “The most incredible piece of literature I’ve ever seen
printed on a six-by-six piece of paper,: and “The power of word
over design” by a national design magazine.
The Bronner’s have used part of their profit for worthy causes
including: buying buses for a local Boys’ and Girls’ Club, wells in
Ghana, Africa to provide fresh water to the natives, reforestation

have never had a salesperson or spent a penny on advertising or
marketing their soaps, but have relied solely on word of mouth and
unsolicited articles for their word to be spread. It will probably

never be clear whether it is the soap or the message on the bottle
which has made Dr. Bronner’s more than a product, but a symbol of
an ideal and an ideal product. The Dr. himself might say it was faith
in his loving God of all mankind and all the good Karma accrued
from fighting the good fight. Whatever the reason. Dr. Bronner’s
soap business though entirely unique and induplicable is testament
to the fact that upstanding ideas and pure and natural ingredients
can indeed succeed. Dr. Bronner will leave this world a better
place. He is an inspiration to soapcrafters everywhere.

eternally tremendous AII-One-God-Faith, that unites the human
race! For we’re All-One or none! As teach all astronomers, for 6000

Oh, what a long - and sudsy trip it has been for Emmanuel H.
Bronner and the soap he created, then popularized along with cleansing
dose of proselytizing.
Bronner may be gone now, but nowhere near forgotten given
the hundreds upon hundreds of Web pages devoted to is memory.
Not to mention Bronner’s magical soapbox - the one that spans
what he called “Spaceship Earth” with “The Moral ABC, introduced
by Kipling’s ‘If’ & Soap maker Bronner.”
Bronner was a giant among all-natural soap-makers when he died
at age 89 in 1997 after decades of building the leading all-natural soap
company in the nation as well as creating a personal mystique that
continues to inform and astound.

Darreld Kitaen, owner of Good Morning treasures, a longtime
Cardiff alternative emporium, said he first started using Dr. Bronner’s
Magic Soap in 1961, way back then.”
“I sell it here in the shop;” Kitaen said, “It’s the only soap I carry.
It’s the most special soap in the world. It’s pure. You can use it for
anything and everything - camping out, washing yourself. It tingles
whenever it touches your body and everybody wants to tingle. I mix
the lavender and almond together in one of our bathroom dispensers
and use it every morning. It mellows me out.”
At Jimbo’s in Escondido, Rachel Crystalbird, a vitamin specialist,
said she got down with Dr. Bronner’s in the 1970’s.
“We stock it regularly here;” Crystalbird said.”People who use it
love it. They use it for everything: massage oils, baths, shampoo and
even one man who say he use it massage and foot soaks:”
Secreted away in an obscure industrial section of Escondido,
the all-natural soap company that Bronner made after a career as
a chemist for more traditional soap-makers now has passed to a
second and third generation of family members.
The company had $8 million in revenue last year, which was the
residual of more than 3 million bottles and bars sold. Revenue has
been growing 5 to 10 percent annually. All this without marketing!
Escondido’s large processing facility features 18 employees.
“We’re the top-selling soap in the natural marketplace;” said
David Bronner, 27, who now heads the family soap company, working
closely with Trudy Bronner, his mother; Ralph Bronner, an uncle in
Menomonee falls, Wisconsin; and Michael Bronner, a brother.
The soaps that come in liquid peppermint - the most popular,
accounting for half of all sales - almond, aloe vera, lavender, eucalyptus,
tea tree, lemon or rose bars are made from a proprietary formula
devised by Bronner. They are all-vegetable oil based with an extra
foamy kick provided through high coconut content. The soaps use
hemp, olive and palm oils instead of tallow.
“Basically, our soap can be used all-purpose;” Bronner said.
“It’s part of back-to-the-land simplicity. The formulation hasn’t
changed much in 50 years. It’s a product, but it’s also my granddad’s
philosophy on the label. This was a radical departure from corporate
commercialism. Grandpa came from an Orthodox (Jewish) soapmaking family and kind of rebelled.
“The philosophy was very eclectic and idiosyncratic;” Bronner
said. “Get down with each other and respect the Earth; very tripped-

process, all-our trade secrets. The formulation hasn’t changed in 50
years, except for the big change, putting hemp oil in.”
(That’s hemp as in industrial hemp despite what old hippies may
say. The modern day Bronner’s were wearing hemp clothing and are
advocates of allowing more industrial hemp to be grown and used for
clothing, oils and such.)
The liquid soaps are so concentrated that they are nearly solid. A
couple of drops generally suffice for lather and washing, while diluting
one part soap into 40 parts water is recommended for light cleaning.
Biodegradable and “nature-friendly” the concentrated liquid
is popular for at-home washing as well as camping and hiking. A
32-ounce bottle costs around $9 to $10.

But this soap, as popular as it is, also is the medium for a
message, or more, of philosophical ruminations, contemplation and
quotations all emblazoned in microscopically small lettering across
each soap bottle.
Fleeing the Holocaust
Born to an Orthodox Jewish soap-making family in Heilbron
Germany, in 1908, Bronner became alarmed by the early ravings of
the Nazi Party and came to the United States in 1929. Other family
members failed to follow that move and perished in the Holocaust.
Bronner found himself in Milwaukee where he married a Catholic
hotel maid which shook up his family and prompted “his search to
prove to his father and the world that we are all one people,” Ralph
Bronner said.
In a 1983 Times Advocate article cited by an obituary published
in North County Times, Dr. Bronner quoted German philosopher
Johann Goethe to explain his life: “Whoever wants to work greatly
on this Earth must apply himself with such a concentration of all his
forces that appear to idle spectators as insane.”
Messages vary soap-to-soap with some, such as the fabled
almond pure Castile soap, causing a stir because of the inclusion of
somewhat over-the-top Bronner-composed love poetry.
Bronner wasn’t a doctor, really. But he played one in the soapmaking world. Everybody called him doctor, which was a title he said
he earned through years as a soap-maker master, which was the
German equivalent of a doctorate in chemistry.
The peppermint soap message ranges from simple use
instructions to much more complex philosophical discourse: “The
whole World is our country, our Fatherland, because all mankind are
born its Citizens!” says a typical passage somewhere near the top to
the scrollo of words that circles the globe. “We’re all Brothers and
Sisters because One, ever-loving Eternal Father is our God, our only
Religion, that Re-unites God’s legion! For we’re All-One or none.”
But Bronner made his way through the world working as a
chemist and making speeches in the Midwest. In 1945, because of
his genius and intensity in speaking, he was railroaded into an insane
asylum in Elgin, II. He escaped to California on his 3rd attempt. Living
in a Los Angeles tenement hotel in the 50’s he started bottling his
own specially formulated soaps.
The current soap-making Bronner clan debated whether to
change the messages but decided it would remain unchanged:

“We do not agree with all the words, but it’s a very beautiful
vision with its essence of realizing we’re all one;” David Bronner said,
“Generally, it’s just great and we continue to work with it. We revere
and respect everything he was about.”
From there, Bronner hit the natural food markets during a time
before there really were many.
An urban renewal project forced Bronner to move the bulk
of his operations south to Escondido in 1962. He liked the hidden
aura of the town named after the Spanish word for hidden. Despite
the onslaught of Parkinson’s disease that blinded him around 1972,
Bronner remained active around North County near San Diego until
his ultimate demise in March 1997.
James Bronner of Escondido and Ralph Bronner - a teacher
who stayed in the Milwaukee area -operated the company after E.H.
Bronner died.
But James Bronner - David and Michael’s father -died a bit more
than a year later in June 1998 at the age of 59. James Bronner also
had a history as a working chemist who invented fire fighting foam.
He didn’t hold the patent but was able to make money marketing the
foam as fake snow.
The Bronner foam continues to be used in movie making and for
celebrations requiring fake snow.
And Ralph Bronner, Dr. Bronner’s oldest son, keeps active in the
company, carrying on one big Bronner magic soaps tradition. Witness
that through the Bronner’s Escondido parking lot where a red van
with Dr. Bronner’s logo and some of his messages glistened in the
rain this week.
“That’s the van (Ralph Bronner) uses when he comes to the
West Coast;” Michael Bronner said. “He has a van in Milwaukee to
go all over the rest of the country. He goes everywhere, taking a
different wat on each “soap trip”, giving soap away to the people
in the stores, the smaller, the better. He is never not working. He
is always talking about the soap, the family or the philosophy with
people and the media.”
There have been many articles on Dr. Bronner and his
wonderful soaps. Dr. Bronner passed away in 1997 and his family
is doing more than ever with his ideals, soaps and projects. Here is

mater, The University of Redlands in California.

Magic Formula
Students hear merits of ethics.

Plenty of business leaders and professors have told Cally
Boman-Dunham ‘02 about the importance of running an ethical,
employee-oriented company.
But the international relations and business major has never
been particularly inspired by those messages.
“Lots of people talk about the concept of business ethics-about
treating people well and treating the environment well;” BomanDunham said. “But, I’ve never really seen people that have actually
done those things. They just talk.”
That changed in March, however, when the senior participated
in a Master Class lead by Trudy Bronner ‘65, owner and chief
financial officer of the Escondido-based Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps.
“When you hear her talk, you can tell she really believes in the
idea of ethics-really applies it to her business,” Boman-Dunham said,
toying with a bottle of the all-natural, biodegradable soap widely
popular among outdoor enthusiasts. “That’s what got my attention.”
Master Classes give students an opportunity to learn from
outside professionals who are leaders in their respective fields. In
many cases, visiting “masters” lecture, while at other times they
lead students through a series of learning activities.
Bronner’s growing company, which manufactures the topselling soap in the natural marketplace, stands as proof that business
leaders can be socially responsible and still turn a robust profit.
At least 10 percent of the company’s annual, pre-tax profits
are donated to civic causes, including an orphanage in China and
well-digging projects in impoverished Ghana villages. Support also is
provided to a woman who adopts disabled children.
In 1998, the company gave the Boys & Girls Club of San Diego
County a land grant of more than 1,000 acres to build a camp.
After seeing a particularly profitable year in 2001, the company
gave 24 percent of overall pre-tax profits to charity.
“We could keep more of the money:” Bronner acknowledged.
“But we really don’t need more than what we already have. We
make nice salaries. We drive nice cars. I take a nice vacation every
year. Do we really need more? No!”
The company’s 16 full-time employees benefit from the
company’s generous, socially responsible approach. The lowestpaid employee earns about $32,000 a year. A generous retirement
package also is provided to workers, with the company contributing
15 percent of each employee’s overall salary into a retirement
plan. Health insurance costs for employees and their families are
paid by the company.
A salary ratio scale has been established ensuring that the gap
between the highest-paid executive and the lowest-paid worker
does not become too wide. The company has carefully regulated
growth to ensure that employees are not overworked.
“We try to treat our workers like a part of our family:” Bronner
said. “We care about them the same way we would care about our
own families.”
As a result, employee turnover is almost non-existent. Still,
Bronner said avoiding turnovers is not what motivates company
executives.
“This is not part of a plan we have to improve our company
from a financial standpoint:” said Bronner. “This is about us trying to
do what is right-to treat everyone like they deserve to be treated.”
That focus on ethics was critical when the company was started
more than 50 years ago by Emmanuel H. Bronner, a third-generation
soapmaker who came to America from Germany in the 1920’s.
Striving to communicate his eclectic views about God, truth
and love, the founder compiled his philosophies and had them
emblazoned on the soaps’ labels. His words remain on the company’s
products today, about five years after his death.
The label on the almond-scented soap declares, “To keep my
health! To do my work! To love, to live! To see to it I gain and grow
& give & give & give!”
The soaps are made primarily with natural oils, making them
particularly mild. All ingredients used in them have not been tested
on animals, earning the company special designation from the
Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics, an alliance of
animal rights organizations.
After telling students how her family’s company is operated,
Bronner acknowledged that each of them still has to make their
own decisions about business ethics.
“It depends on what is in a person’s heart and mind-that is what
determines how they will run a business or live their lives. I like to
think...that we try to make good choices that help others and help
the environment. But if your only interest is making money, I don’t
think that will happen. Your choices will be very different:”

SOAP HEIR PEDDLES PEACE, LOVE
When Thomsen also sent Bronner a CD of the Echoes of Peace
Choir, he was so impressed that he ordered more CD’s - and he
sent the whole choir boxes of soap.
A chance meeting through music leads to a tour of Duluth by
the maker of Dr. Bronner’s soap.
“The quality of this choir is unbelievable:” he said Tuesday. “And
their message, it’s a message of peace and brotherhood. I had to
come and meet them.”

Ralph Bronner doesn’t need to drive around the country in his
minivan with boxes of his family’s famous soap. But it is a great way
to meet people.
And so there he was Tuesday, vice president of Dr. Bronner’s
Magic Soap Co., in Duluth, Minnesota, to sing children’s songs and eat
a potluck dinner in the basement of Peace United Church of Christ.
All in the name of peace and love. It’s a message he passes
out with songs, hugs, laughter and bottles of soap to charities and
people around the world. Often, there are hefty checks to go along.
Bronner and his wife, Gisela, drove the minivan to Duluth this
week to meet his new favorite folk singer, the Twin Port’s Sara
Thomsen, and the Echoes of Peace Choir that she directs.
Bronner first heard Thomsen on a CD sampler of 22 up andcoming folk artists. But it was Thomsen’s single “Is It For Freedom?”
on the war in Iraq that caught his ear most.
“I’ve loved folk music since the ‘50’s. I’ve known Pete Seger,
Arlo Guthrie, James Taylor...” Bronner said. “But Sara is just
fantastic...Her one fault is that she is too modest. The whole world
should hear her.”
The two have conversed by phone and mail for more than a
year - Bronner ordering more of Thomsen’s CD’s and Thomsen
listening to Bronner’s tales of world travels in the name of charities
and organic soap.
“The phone calls could get pretty long. But he’s an incredible
person:” Thomsen said. “I’d heard of the soap before. I buy it at the
Whole Foods Co-Op. But I didn’t know who he was or the work
his family has done.”
A native of the Milwaukee area who has lived there most of his
69 years, Ralph Bronner spent much of his professional life teaching
troubled, big-city junior high students.
But he was drawn back to his father’s soap business and now
is the goodwill ambassador of the company that remains familyowned. He still drives thousands of miles every year to visit stores
that sell the soap, but only to talk, never to try to pitch the product.
“It sells itself. We don’t do any marketing.” He noted.
Ralph’s father, Emanuel Bronner, who died in 1997, was a thirdgeneration German soap-maker from an Orthodox Jewish family,
but rebelled against his father and came to the United states in the
late 1920’s. Most of the family left behind died in the holocaust.
After a strange route that included a stint in an Illinois insane
asylum, Emanuel Bronner literally escaped to California and started
the company that is famous today among people who look for
organic, eco-friendly and socially responsible products.
Ralph Bronner now preaches three key ingredients of his
eccentric father’s stalwart philosophy - “constructive capitalism,”
“spaceship Earth” and “All-One-God-Faith” that buyers of the soaps
may recognize from the labels, some of which have more than 3,000
words crammed onto a quart bottle.
Ralph once thought that those words were his father’s ridiculous
ramblings. Now, he understands.
The constructive capitalism part means the family charges a fair
price for a good product, pays better than fair wages and benefits
to its workers and won’t sell the company to corporate America.

It also means much of the company’s profits go back into society.
“It’s an $11 million company that sells five-and-a-half million
bottles of soap a year and gives 30 to 70 percent of its profits to
charities;” Bronner rattles off. It’s not bragging, its fact, and Bronner
is the company’s chief philanthropist.
“All One God Faith isn’t just on Bronner’s minivan’s license
plates, it’s a philosophy of world harmony that contends we are all
united by one God, no matter our race or religion.
“His message is the same as ours;” Thomsen told her choir
when introducing Bronner. “Only it’s a different vehicle.”
Soap instead of sopranos.
“God bless you all;” Bronner said after Tuesday’s night’s singa-long. “And keep singing.”
Bronner also visited the Whole Foods Co-Op and Harbor
City International School on Tuesday. Today, Bronner is scheduled
to visit Grant Elementary and the Summit School in Duluth as well
as the Loaves and Fishes Catholic Worker community and Temple
Israel.

There are brave souls who dare to dream that men are brothers
and not foes. That hands may clasp across the seas to common
good, to common woes. That beneath God’s Law, the Essene
Moral ABC, that 6 Billion strong unites AII-One-God-Faith men
will embrace in brother-love to never kill in bitter hate. Who
dare to hear the mighty truth, reverberating through long years,
that faith-love-courage conquer fear & teamwork heal a nation’s
tears. Though flood & fire sweep the old earth’s sod, & raging
wars and evils wreck its calm, still through the awful tumult there
is God, our glorious world within His upraised palm. Among the
journeying stars, the moon, the sun that have not failed because
of that great might, with other pilgrim planets, we are one held in
His hand, kept in His steadfast sight. Amidst the cannons roar you
can hear God’s voice: “Replace half truth, our real enemy, that age
old hated with full truth, hard work, God’s Law uniting mankind
in AII-One-God-Faith!” For centuries, man struggles half asleep,
half living, small, hate, jealous, bickering with mountains of red
tape to be awakened, the night God chose giving His great reward
for hard work: Poetry, uniting Love, evolving man above the ape!
Machine age man is full of sense & nonsense, fear & greed, hate &
jealousy which destroy his every land.

in Nigeria. We have fought the federal government and won on
industrial hemp and meaningful organic standards. We are now
into fair trade where workers all over Spaceship Earth will benefit.
David Bronner 32, and Michael Bronner 30 are doing an amazing
job as President and Vice-President in carrying out Dr. Bronner’s
vision.
Our workers have almost complete medical coverage with no
deductions and received bonuses of 15 to 60 thousand dollars
each for the past 3 years. We now have Dr. Bronner’s & Sundog
magic lotions and lip balms (we have acquired this wonderful
company and improved the products) as well as ALL our body
soaps are organic.
