Colours create atmosphere
You can create some fascinating effects in a room with them
The interplay of colours is something that needs to be planned. For one colour shade never stands alone. A neighbouring colour can alter
its effect completely. Quite apart from one’s own personal feelings and contemporary trends, there are a number of basic theories on the
basic uses of colour. If you know about them, it will make it easier for you to make well-founded decisions on colours.
Colour contrasts
The interactive effect of colours is quite a complex subject: colours are related to one another, form
contrasts and influence one another mutually. They can intensify or dilute their effects reciprocally. The
atmosphere in a room can be enlivened by colour contrasts.
Light/dark contrast
Colours of sufficiently differing brightness form a
light/dark contrast. A shade of medium brightness
appears dark in very light surroundings; vice versa the
same tone appears lighter in a dark environment.
Cold/warm contrast
The cold/warm contrast is a ‘colour-in-itself’ contrast
that shows a combination of ‘cool’ and ‘warm’
colours. A shade appears all the more cooler, the
warmer its environment is. If the surrounds are ever
cooler in tone, the same shade of blue appears
warmer.

Colourful/colourless contrast
If one combines shades with a very different
saturation level, you get a so-called ‘colourful/
colourless’ contrast. The poorly saturated shade still
appears quite colourful in a grey environment. On the
other hand the circle appears greyer in a bright red
environment.
Counter-colour contrast
The colour effect of any given shade is strengthened
when the counter-colour comes into play. So a green
shade appears greener when red is in its vicinity.
Counter-colours lie opposite one another in the
colour circle. (Red-green), yellow-violet, blue-orange).
Room effects
The proportions of a room can be optically manipulated by the
use of light/dark contrasts: The darker and stronger a shade is,
the more it encroaches on the viewer (except very dark tones).
Optical height effects
With a dark ceiling and
accompanying lighter
walls we can optically
reduce the height of a
room quite considerably.
The ceiling colour shade
ought not, however, be
too dark so as to avoid
the room appearing too
oppressive.
Creating optical
distance and height
Light wall and ceiling
surfaces make the room
seem larger and more
open. The room also
appears higher when the
ceiling is made lighter
compared to the walls. A
dark floor creates a stable
and firm basis.
Reducing optical
space
An end wall with a dark,
strong shade takes depth
out of the room. This
effect is more enhanced
by a warm colour shade
– the accented wall
then appears to come
even further forward and
becomes something of an
eyecatcher.
Colour effects
Colours have a distinct general feeling about them; they represent a kind of visual language.
Such feelings that a colour conveys are what makes up its objective significance.
Every colour also has a three-dimensional effect: light and cool shades widen and open up a room.
Colourful walls appear closer than colourless ones and warm shades nearer than cool ones.
Red
Red is generally exciting and
enlivening. Cosy, warm colour
atmospheres are possible with
warm red-orange shades.
Bluish red creates an elegant,
modern impression, above
all in combination with white,
grey and black. According to
its intensity and quantity, red
can also have an aggressive
and oppressive effect and
should therefore only be used
with caution on large surface
areas. Strong red shades
usually make a wall appear
smaller and closer. Since
red tends to come to the
foreground, it is well suited
to use on walls that require a
little colour accenting.

Yellow
Yellow is the brightest and
most communicative colour;
it has a radiant and widening
effect. With yellow the sun
truly rises, even where little
daylight can infiltrate the
room. Light yellow ceilings
are experienced as being
lighter and more radiant than
white ones. Well-saturated
yellow tones can also have
a rather oppressive effect in
small rooms, since yellow
encroaches somewhat on
the observer. Reddish yellow
shades seem cosy and
warming – yellow shades with
a touch of green by contrast
appear fresher and cooler.
Green
We associate green with
naturalness and freshness.
Green rooms can appear
relaxing, soothing and even
less noisy. That is why green
is also recommended for
bedrooms. Bluish shades of
green appear peaceful and
sedate, yellow ones rather
more enlivening. Brilliant
green shades are well suited
to mobile elements; darker
or greyish green nuances
are better suited to static
and supporting functions.
Bright green shades appear
to improve the light in a
room and underline the 3dimensional qualities of the
room, retaining its original
character. In combination with
wood, green shades create a
natural and fresh impression.
Blue
Blue is the most popular of
all colours. Cool blue shades
create peacefulness and
improve people’s powers
of concentration – they are
therefore good for rooms
where people work. Light
blue shades appear distant
and weightless – they widen
the room and can have a
pleasant compensatory effect
in south-facing rooms with
a lot of sunlight. Dark blue
shades appear compact
and supportive. Artificial
electric light can falsify blue
effects and even destroy
them completely. A lively and
exciting contrast is created
with warmly toned natural
wood furniture.
Grey
Neutral grey is colourless
and therefore brings other
colours more markedly to
the fore. Grey is often bluish,
reddish, yellowish (concrete
grey) or greenish in tone.
Grey is transformed in the
direction of the opposite
colour by strong adjacent
colours: so neutral beside red
appears greenish. Grey has an
unobtrusive and static effect
in the room and is therefore
particularly well suited to use
on flooring. Rooms in grey
shades appear elegant and
slightly unapproachable – the
slightest colour accents are
then perceived to be stronger.
White
Pure white is the most
unnatural of all colours.
In contrast, milk is bluish,
eggshells are cream-coloured
and most white blossoms
are greenish. White walls
appear cool and pure, rather
noble in the corresponding
context (stucco). Individual
white surfaces can divide
other colours and allow them
room to breathe. Totally white
rooms, however, appear
uncomfortable and vague.
The pure white blinds the eye
and is tiring in the long term.
The tenderly radiant ‘offwhites’ provide an alternative
here, as they give a room a
little atmosphere and lightness
regardless of the amount of
natural light at hand.
