PLENARY PRESENTERS
Kevin Berthia
Suicide Attempt Survivor & Prevention Advocate
The Bridge of Life
At the age of 22, Kevin attempted to take his own life by
jumping off of the Golden Gate Bridge. "I had never dealt
with any of the problems in my life, and that morning I was
overwhelmed by it all...I parked and walked towards the
bridge. As I jumped over the railings I heard someone say:
“Hey, wait a minute.” I was convinced I was going to end my
life, but at the last moment his voice made me stop and grab
the railings. I now know that was Officer Kevin Briggs. He
snapped me back to reality. I was on that ledge for 92
minutes, and for 89 of those I just talked. I got everything out
and he listened without judging.”
As a Suicide Prevention Advocate, Kevin encourages people to talk through their problems rather than think about
ending their lives.
His story has been featured in various media including the Nightly News
with Brian Williams, ABC Fusion, The Steve Harvey Show, Men's Health
Magazine and People Magazine.
Cheryl Sharp, MSW, ALWF
Senior Advisor, Trauma-Informed Services,
National Council for Behavioral Health
Healing Hungry Ghosts: Understanding Addiction Using
a Trauma-Informed Lens
Addiction professionals, perhaps more than any other provider group,
need to understand the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACES)
and how, if left unaddressed, negatively affect a person’s recovery
trajectory. While understanding ACEs is imperative, we must do more.
We must build programs and services that are trauma-informed as well
as trauma specific.
This plenary will explore the elements of a trauma-informed organization
providing addiction treatment, provide understanding for the importance
of safe and secure environments, support for an educated and traumainformed workforce, and discuss evidence-based best practices.

Be a Shining Light of Hope: Everyone Can Play a Role in Suicide Prevention
Suicide is an international tragedy and communities

issues surrounding suicide as she guides listeners through
her own journey from bereavement to activist. Positioning

prevention advocates and everyday citizens to get
involved in the suicide prevention movement. By giving
many examples of community-level action, she teaches

Suicide Postvention: How to Prepare for the Worst

9th Annual
Focusing on Treatment and Care Conference
July 29-31, 2015
The Center for Rural Development
Somerset KY
On behalf of The Adanta Group, Adanta’s Board of Directors and
Team Members, the Kentucky Department of Behavioral Health,
Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities as the Premier
Sponsor, and other sponsors, we would like to thank you
for attending the Focusing on Treatment and Care Conference.
We are facing significant and rapid changes in behavioral health
across America. The world of physical and behavioral health is
also rapidly evolving in Kentucky and if we don’t pay attention to
the changes, we will be left in the dust. As LEADERS TAKING
CHARGE, now, more than ever, we need to be CONFIDENT and
FEARLESS in moving TOWARDS change and removing obstacles
that prevent people we serve from living the life and enjoying a
career, friends, and family they want and desire. Our desire is
for you to be a Center of Excellence, both as a professional
delivering care and the organizations your work for or with.
As you begin to contemplate and apply the knowledge gathered
over the past two days, also apply this important principle, as
stated by General George S. Patton, Jr.:
Never tell people how to do things. Tell them
what to do and they will surprise you with
their ingenuity.
Working together, we can Enhance the Lives of Others!
