United beats earnings expectations despite drop in net income
U.S. carrier United Airlines beat
analyst expectations on first-quarter
earnings while suffering a 38% drop
in net income, which the carrier
blamed on the strong dollar and a
larger decrease than expected in
business travel. The airline reported a
first-quarter net income of $313 million earnings per share of $0.88 per
diluted share and pre-tax earnings of
$494 million. During the first quarter
of 2016, the company repurchased
$1.5 billion worth of its common
stock, representing approximately
8% of shares outstanding.

Germanwings crash victims’
families sue U.S. flight school
Around 80 Germanwings crash victims’ families filed a lawsuit against
the Airline Training Centre of Arizona
in the United States for failing to properly check Andreas Lubitz medical
background that may have prevented
him from crashing the Germanwings
airliner into the French Alps in 2015
killing all 150 people on board. According to Marc Moller, an attorney
from the company that represents
the victims’ families, if the training
centre had checked Andreas Lubitz’s
medical history and found that there
was a restriction in 2010, it might
have prohibited him from flying.
Luton Airport to build £200m
light rail link in 2020
London Luton Airport limited (LLAL)

crucial milestone in the transformation of the airport. Plans have been
confirmed for a mass passenger transit (MPT) system, similar to those already in use at Gatwick and Birmingham (UK) airports, to replace the
current bus service.

The first Lockheed Martin LM-100J has reached major production assembly milestones

The first Lockheed Martin LM-100J commercial freighter aircraft has reached major production assembly milestones at Aeronautics sites located Marietta, GA.; Meridian, Mississippi; and Clarksburg, West Virginia. Wing production has begun in Marietta, which
is home to the C-130J Super Hercules final assembly line. Other structural parts are in
production at the Meridian and Clarksburg facilities. The LM-100J is the civil-certified version of Lockheed Martin’s proven C-130J Super Hercules and an updated version of the
L-100 (or L-382) cargo aircraft. Lockheed Martin officials submitted a Program Notification
Letter to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Jan. 21, 2014, for a type design
update for the Lockheed Martin Model L-382J airplane, a civil-certified variant of the C130J Super Hercules to be marketed as the LM-100J. The LM-100J is expected to make its
first flight in 2017, then enter into an FAA certification phase. Through select design innovations, the LM-100J will perform as a commercial multi-purpose air freighter capable
of rapid and efficient cargo transport. The LM-100J is an ideal airlift solution for delivering
bulk and oversize cargo, particularly to austere locations worldwide. Like its military counterpart, the LM-100J will be able to support multiple missions, ranging from firefighting,
to medevac, to VIP transport. The LM-100J incorporates technological developments and
improvements over the existing L-100s that result from years of C-130J operational experience, including more than 1.3 million flight hours by operators in 16 nations. The result of
this experience and advancement translates to an aircraft that will deliver reliable service
in a multi-role platform for decades to come.

Current Operating Income before IFRS 3 was
€80.4m, down compared to the first half of
2014/2015. As for the fiscal year 2014/2015,
this low Current Operating Income results
from the difficulties encountered by the Aircraft Interiors activities, where excess costs
remain high, estimated at around €110m
versus budget in H1, and which are also impacted by programs in ramp-up phase with
a lower profitability. Non-current operating
items came to a negative €10.7m in the first
half of 2014/2015 fiscal year compared to a
negative €12.6 m the previous year. This was
largely due to goodwill amortizations linked
to IFRS 3 standard. Operating income is down

employees, contact center agents, storekeepers, maintenance instructors, central load
planners, fleet technical instructors and related employees, and security officers. Following just four months of negotiations, they

Airbus Training Center (ATC) in Miami has
installed its first A350 XWB full-flight simulator. The A350 XWB simulator has received
Level-D qualification from both the Federal
Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). There
are four levels of full-flight simulator, Levels

-A to -D. ‘Level-D’ is the highest standard
which facilitates ‘zero-flight-time’ training of
civil pilots when converting from one airliner
type to another. This is the first A350 XWB
full-flight simulator in the Americas and complements the Miami Training Center’s existing two A330/A340 and four A320 full-flight
simulators. American Airlines and TAM are
the first customers to train on the new equipment. The new simulator will also train flight
crews from Azul, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and other A350 XWB customers from
around the world.
Jeppesen, a part of Boeing Commercial
Aviation Services, has teamed with audio
expert Bose Corporation to provide automatic audio warnings as part of its flight
information solution for private pilots flying
under visual flight rules – Mobile FliteDeck
VFR. Audio warning functionality continues
Jeppesen’s platform of data-driven, or realtime presentation of flight information for
pilots. Pilots are able to connect their Bose
A20 Aviation Headsets to the Mobile FliteDeck VFR app via Bluetooth and receive real-time critical airspace and waypoint audio
warnings. Pilots flying in or near controlled
airspace receive both visual and audio warnings ensuring airspace awareness. Unique
sound and spoken word “airspace” warnings
alert pilots to current airspace. If the pilot
has defined route waypoints entered in Mobile FliteDeck VFR, similar audio and visual
alerts are available to warn them in flight.
Pilots also are able to choose which audio
alerts they would like to receive, providing a
personalized experience.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand
(CAAT) has appointed CAA International
(CAAi), the advisory arm of the UK Civil Aviation Authority (UK CAA), to help strengthen
CAAT’s aviation safety oversight and compliance with the International Civil Aviation
Organisation (ICAO). The CAAi project will
involve a team of around ten experts from
the UK CAA to work collaboratively with CAAT
to recertify Thai-registered AOCs, to address
the Significant Safety Concern (SSC) raised by
ICAO in 2015. CAAi will also conduct on-thejob flight operations training to CAAT Inspectors, to help increase their core inspectorate
competencies in accordance with international standards. The final work stream includes
full-scale ICVM preparation assistance. This
activity will cover all of ICAO’s eight critical
elements of a safety oversight system ahead
of Thailand’s impending ICVM safety audit by
Airbus opens its largest flight crew training facility in Singapore

The new Airbus Asia Training Centre (AATC), a joint venture owned 55% by Airbus and
45% by Singapore Airlines (SIA), was officially opened in Singapore on April 18. The
9,250 m² facility in Singapore becomes the fourth Airbus flight crew training center
worldwide, alongside Toulouse, Miami and Beijing. The new center offers type rating
and recurrent training courses for all in-production Airbus types and when fully operational will be Airbus’ largest flight crew training facility, with eight full-flight simulators,
comprising three A350 XWBs, one A380, two A330s and two A320s. The center will
also have six fixed cockpit training devices and extensive classroom facilities, with the
capacity to offer courses for more than 10,000 trainees per year. AATC began operations
in April 2015 and prior to the opening of the new center has been offering courses out
of temporary facilities at the SIA Training Centre near Changi Airport. All operations
are gradually being transferred to the new center, located at Seletar Aerospace Park.
Instructors have initially been drawn from Airbus and Singapore Airlines, with additional
recruitment ongoing. Seventeen airlines from Asia and the Pacific have already signed
up to use the services of AATC, where the courses offered are identical to those at the
existing Airbus flight crew training centers.

in May 2016.
SensoMotoric Instruments (SMI) is partnering with Lufthansa Systems to combine its
renowned eye tracking with the NetLine/Ops
++ airline operations control solution. The
union of these leading technologies will allow Lufthansa Systems’ customer airlines to
measure and enhance the effectiveness of
their on-screen alerts which pre-empt costly
disruptions. These include weather alerts,
air traffic control issues and pending missed
connections. SMI’s screen-based remote eye
tracking will be used to determine when and
if these alerts are seen. If there has been no
gaze fixation by the operator within an ac-
ceptable time frame, additional warnings will
be generated in the form of a sound or a vibration on a wearable device. Longer term,
the accumulated eye tracking data will help
improve the effectiveness of next generation
operations control systems.
China Eastern and GE Aviation have signed
an agreement extension on industrial Internet cooperation for the airline’s fleet of approximately 270 aircraft, mainly including
A320s, A330s and Boeing 737s and 777s. In
this agreement, GE and China Eastern are
enabling the improvement of China Eastern’s
operational efficiency and fuel savings by
analyzing the airline’s fleet data to identify
cost-saving opportunities. This agreement

will extend cooperation for a year where
both companies will work together on flight
analytics, engine management analytics and
fuel efficiency to bring improved operational
productivity to China Eastern’s fleet operations. Meanwhile, with its experience and
skills as an engine manufacturer, GE will provide training programs to improve China Eastern’s engine management capability and also
provide six sigma training programs for China
Eastern.
