Films about youth, films for youth audiences, films made by young people,
films that express or capture the meanings and feelings of youth…What are
our intentions in organizing the 2013 W&M Global Film Festival around the
theme “Film & Youth”? We mean all of the above. Motion pictures are often
referred to as the youngest art form. At little more than a century old, film
is a wee urchin of a medium compared to other arts and forms of creative
expression. One could argue that film is youth and so stands in a uniquely
close and promising relationship to what it means (or meant) to be young.
We invite our community, young and old, to come together to celebrate and
contemplate the many youth(s) of cinema and the ways film can help us
understand the child in us all while also exposing us to different experiences
of being young from around the world and right here at home. The festival
will again feature both global and local films, guest filmmakers, receptions
and live musical performances, this year with an eye toward making us all
young and young again.
Beasts of the Southern Wild
While most screenings at the 2013 Global Film Festival will cost $1, select
marquee film screenings will cost $2 for W&M ID holders and $3 for general
admission. Prices for special off-site events can be found at filmfestival.
wm.edu. All-access VIP Passes, with expanded benefits, will again be on
sales (GFF Patron Pass $50; GFF Cinephile Pass $35; GFF Fan Pass $20; GFF
Green & Gold Pass $15). For more information on the perks of the VIP Pass

Based on true events surrounding King Christian VII of Denmark and his wife, Queen Caroline Mathilda, A Royal
Affair stars Mads Mikkelson (who will be playing Hannibal Lecter in NBC’s upcoming series Hannibal) as the
mentally ill king’s personal physician, Johann Friedrich Struensee, an ordinary man who steals the Queen’s
heart and incites a revolution. As Struensee and Queen Caroline struggle to break away from King Christian,
their idealism and bravery lead them to risk everything in order to gain freedom for the people of 18th century
Denmark. Danish/English/German/French with subtitles. Jan. 14-16, 18, 20, 22-23 screening room. 137 mins.
In the wake of their cellist’s life-changing diagnosis, the fate of a world renowned string quartet hangs in the
balance-death, of competing egos, and lust all threatening to destroy the group’s legacy. As these musicians
(played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, Christopher Walken, Catherine Keener, and Mark Ivanir) prepare for their 25th
anniversary concert, only the bond formed through years of friendship and the power of music can preserve their
collaboration. A Late Quartet is inspired by and structured around Beethoven’s Open 131 String Quartet in C-sharp
minor, and pays homage to chamber music and New York City. Jan. 17, 19, 21 screening room. 105 mins.
In small-town Iowa, Laura Pickler (Jennifer Garner) enters the annual butter-carving contest when her husband,
Bob (Ty Burrell), the reigning champion, decides to retire. She soon, however, finds herself pitted against an
adopted girl, Destiny (Yara Shahidi), whose natural talent for butter carving makes her a strong competitor, as
well as Bob’s would-be mistress (Olivia Wilde) and his biggest fan. Determined to win, Laura is forced to recruit her
former boyfriend (Hugh Jackman) to help her. Laura’s ambition and Destiny’s natural talent form the base for this
thinly-veiled satire of the 2008 Democratic Primary between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
Jan. 24-28 screening room. 90 mins.
Educators, parents, students gather at the Kimball Theatre to view an exclusive showing of director James Redford's

For Excellence. Tickets are $10; available via the Walsingham web site: Walsingham.org, the Kimball Theatre box
office, all Colonial Williamsburg ticketing facilities, or call 1-800-HISTORY.
Twilight’s Robert Pattinson stars as Eric Packer, a 28-year-old billionaire asset manager dreaming of a more
advanced civilization, in this near-future drama from acclaimed director David Cronenberg (A History of Violence,
Eastern Promises). Over the course of a 24-hour journey to visit his father’s old barber, Eric watches his Wall Street
empire slowly slip away due to a miscalculated bet. As he is chauffeured through Manhattan, Eric sees his world
torn apart and begins to piece together clues leading to his own assassination. Also starring Samantha Morton,
Juliette Binoche, and Paul Giamatti. Jan. 29-Feb. 2, 6 screening room. 109 mins.
At 38, Mark (John Hawkes), a man confined to an iron lung, wishes to lose his virginity. With the help of his priest
(William H. Macy) and his therapist, Mark contacts a professional sex surrogate (Helen Hunt) to make his dream
a reality. Based on the optimistic autobiography of journalist and poet Mark O’Brien, The Sessions won the 2012
Sundance Jury Prize for Ensemble Cast and lead actors John Hawkes and Helen Hunt are currently nominated for
Best Actor and Actress Indie Spirit Awards. Feb. 3-5, 7-10, 12 screening room. 95 mins.

travels across America in hopes of finding his father’s ex-Nazi nemesis, experiencing a reawakening thanks to the
people he meets along the way. Also starring Frances McDormand. Feb. 11, 13-18, 20 screening room. 111 mins.

plunging headlong into each role. There are no cameras, no stage for these performances. Instead, Oscar is alone,
save for Céline (Edith Scob), the woman behind the wheel of the engine that transports him around Paris. As Oscar
jumps from role to role, Holy Motors asks where his true home and his family rest. Also starring Eva Mendes and

Nominated for Best Foreign Film at the 2012 Oscars, Intouchables tells the story of a wealthy quadriplegic
living in a mansion in Paris who requires a live-in care-giver. When a young man from the Parisian projects is
hired for the job, the two men develop a close friendship. A touching comedy starring Francois Cluzet and
Omar Sy, Intouchables was a world-wide sleeper hit, and is now the most viewed French film in the history of
cinema. (112min, French with subtitles).
Bachir Lazhar, an Algerian immigrant, is hired to replace an elementary school teacher who died tragically.
While the class goes through a long healing process, nobody in the school is aware of Bachir's painful former
life; nor that he is at risk of being deported at any moment. Adapted from Evelyne de la Cheneliere's play,
Monsieur Lazhar depicts the encounter between two distant worlds and the power of self-expression. Using
great sensitivity and humor, Philippe Falardeau follows a humble man who is ready to transcend his own loss
in order to accompany children beyond the silence and taboo of death. (94 min, French with subtitles).
A mother's last wishes send twins Jeanne and Simon on a journey to the Middle East in search of their
tangled roots. Adapted from Wajdi Mouawad's acclaimed play, Incendies tells the powerful and moving
tale of two young adults' voyage to the core of deep-rooted hatred, never-ending wars and enduring
love. (130min, French, Arabic, and English with subtitles).
A family moves into a new neighborhood, and a 10-year-old named Laure deliberately presents as
a boy named Mikhael to the neighborhood children. Tomboy follows Mikhael/Laure's experiences
with newfound friends, family, and burgeoning love. Tomboy focuses on the significance of gender
identity in social interaction from an early age, the difficulties of being transgender and young, and how
Mikhael navigates these in the background of childhood play and love. Co-sponsored with the Global
Film Festival. (84 min, French with subtitltes).
In this wryly inventive parable, a kingdom is divided into the three castes: the impeccably painted Alldunns
who reside in a majestic palace; the Halfies who the Painter has left incomplete; and the untouchable
Sketchies, simple charcoal outlines who are banished to the cursed forest. Chastised for her forbidden love
for an Alldunn, Halfie Claire runs away into the forest. Her beloved Ramo and best friend Lola journey after
her, passing between the forbidden Death Flowers that guard the boundaries of the forest, and arriving
finally at the very edge of the painting – where they tumble through the canvas and into the Painter’s studio.
The abandoned workspace is strewn with paintings, each containing its own animated world – and in a feast
for both the eyes and imagination, they explore first one picture and then another, attempting to discover
just what the Painter has in mind for all his creations. Co-sponsored with the Global Film Festival. (76 min,
French with subtitles). Tickets available at the door, day of show.
In pre-World War II France, a father is torn between his sense of honor and his deep love for his saintly
daughter when she gets in trouble with the wealthy son of a shopkeeper. (107 min, French with subtitles).

Years after escaping a German concentration camp with the help of her Polish lover, Hannah Silberstein’s
comfortable life in Manhattan’s Upper East Side is disrupted when she sees Tamasz, her former lover, being
interviewed on TV. Previously convinced that Tamasz had died in the chaos following the war, Hannah decides
she must see him, despite the consequences that this may have on her happily-married life with her researcher
husband and college-aged daughter. Directed by Anna Justice, Remembrance depicts a remarkable love story
that blossoms within the concentration camp, as well as the moral consequences of bringing this love out of
the past. German/English/Polish/Russian with subtitles. 105 mins.
