Other h i g h l i g h t s of the October meeting: * Marty Loken, s e c r e t a r y - t r e a s u r e r d u r i n g the C e n t e r ' s f i r s t y e a r , r e p o r ted t h a t the group had $2,800 and 70 p a i d members as o f October 1. * Dick Wagner, Rip Knot and Bob Chapel v o l u n t e e r e d t o study g r a n t s g i v e n r e c e n t l y by the N a t i o n a l T r u s t 1978 for H i s t o r i c Preservation (Maritime D i v i s i o n ) , t o see i f The C e n t e r f o r Wooden Boats might wish to apply f o r N a t i o n a l T r u s t g r a n t s i n the f u t u r e . Competition f o r maritime grants apparently i s t o u g h — the N a t i o n a l T r u s t o f f e r e d $280,000 t o 19 o r g a n i z a t i o n s r e c e n t l y , a f t e r r e c e i v i n g r e q u e s t s f o r more than $7 million. So f a r , the C e n t e r ' s attempts at grantsmanship have been on a f a r s m a l l e r s c a l e — a t p r e s s time, we were w a i t i n g t o hear about our m i n i - g r a n t a p p l i c a t i o n t o the Washington Commission f o r the Humanities ( f o r r e s t o r a t i o n o f the 31-foot rowing g i g ) , and a King County Block Grant a p p l i c a t i o n to r e b u i l d two s m a l l e r b o a t s , the 14'-7" M e t l a k a t l a Boat, and 14'-3" Acme Boat Works s k i f f . * D i c k Wagner o f f e r e d another r e p o r t on our s e a r c h f o r a permanent s i t e , c o n c l u d i n g t h a t the Center should continue looking i n t o a v a i l a b i l i t y o f the s o - c a l l e d " a s p h a l t p l a n t , " a prime p i e c e o f w a t e r f r o n t a d j o i n i n g the U.S. Naval Reserve f a c i l i t y on Lake Union. One d i s t i n c t longer-range p o s s i b i l i t y i s t h a t s e v e r a l maritime groups w i l l combine e f f o r t s t o c r e a t e a H i s t o r i c Seaport on Lake U n i o n — t h e V i r g i n i a V Foundation, Northwest Seaport, H i s t o r i c S e a t t l e , The Center f o r Wooden Boats, and the U.S. Navy. The r e s u l t c o u l d be a s p e c t a c u l a r maritime museum and w a t e r f r o n t park f e a t u r i n g the s m a l l e s t and l a r g e s t t r a d i t i o n a l w a t e r c r a f t found i n the Northwest... from 7-foot prams (we have enough o f those) t o the o l d c o d f i s h i n g schooner Wawona. The Center f o r Wooden Boats o f f i c i a l l y Newsletter of The Center for Wooden Boats supports development o f such a park, of course, but we w i l l c o n t i n u e t o develop our own s m a l l - c r a f t maritime museum as p l a n s f o r the l a r g e r and more c o s t l y H i s t o r i c Seaport u n f o l d . (No sense i n w a i t i n g around; these m u l t i - m i l l i o n - d o l l a r i d e a s take awhile t o develop. There are many s m a l l - c r a f t programs the Center can pursue without a l o t o f money...) THE FIRST YEAR Looking back over development o f The Center f o r Wooden Boats, we r e a l i z e d t h a t the i d e a has been " p u b l i c " f o r e x a c t l y one year. Here are a few h i g h l i g h t s o f our a c t i v i t i e s d u r i n g the f i r s t 12 months: * In October, 1977, we f o r m a l l y announced f o r m a t i o n o f the Center a t FISH EXPO, h e l d i n S e a t t l e , throwing t o g e t h e r a booth d i s p l a y , b r o c h u r e s , p o s t e r s and o t h e r m a t e r i a l s a few days b e f o r e the e x p o s i t i o n opened. The booth f e a t u r e d Marty Loken and G l o r i a Grandaw's Poulsbo boat, Shine, which helped a t t r a c t hundreds o f fishermen t o our d i s p l a y . * Then, e a r l y i n 1978, we p a r t i c i p a t e d modestly i n the S e a t t l e Boat Show, s h a r i n g a Kingdome booth w i t h our f r i e n d s a t Northwest Seaport. * In June, j u s t i n time f o r our second annual S e a t t l e Wooden Boat Show, we e s t a b l i s h e d membership f e e s and o t h e r " r u l e s and r e g s , " a l l o w i n g us t o a c c e p t d o n a t i o n s and o f f e r t a n g i b l e — i f upcoming—benefits to members. * The S e a t t l e Wooden Boat Show ( J u l y 1-4, 1978), o r g a n i z e d and sponsored by The Center f o r Wooden Boats, was a tremendously s u c c e s s f u l event...with d i s p l a y s o f boats and other t r a d i t i o n a l maritime g o o d i e s , rowing and s a i l i n g r a c e s , f i l m s , s l i d e shows, demonstrations o f boatb u i l d i n g s k i l l s , booths d i s p l a y i n g t o o l s , hardware and f a s t e n i n g s , chantey s i n g e r s and f u n d - r a i s i n g a u c t i o n s . The Center emerged w i t h a few thousand d o l l a r s i n the bank, our f i r s t o f f i c i a l p a i d members, and more than a few p l a n s f o r the f u t u r e . * A b i g s t e p was taken August 1, 1978, when members approved the Center's Bylaws and A r t i c l e s o f I n c o r p o r a t i o n , making p o s s i b l e our a p p l i c a t i o n f o r o f f i c i a l s t a t u s as a n o n - p r o f i t o r g a n i z a t i o n ( f i r s t step i n the s e a r c h f o r f u n d i n g ) . * F i n a l l y , we s e t our f i r s t annual b u s i n e s s meeting f o r October 3 and e l e c t e d o f f i c e r s and t r u s t e e s (see item elsewhere i n t h i s i s s u e on the October meeting). * In mid-October our a p p l i c a t i o n for non-profit organization status was approved by the S e c r e t a r y o f State's o f f i c e . The boat was b u i l t 50 y e a r s ago i n the Tsimshian Indian v i l l a g e o f Metlakatla, Alaska, by D a v i s & Son, who b u i l t a v a r i e t y of f a s t and seaworthy s m a l l boats f o r h a n d t r o l l i n g and p l e a s u r e use. * L i n e s o f a Columbia R i v e r g i l l n e t t e r , taken o f f o f an abandoned h u l l a t A s t o r i a i n 1941. Donated by Hobart Thompson, o f Salem, Oregon. * Half-model o f a g i l l n e t t e r , based on l i n e s mentioned above. Donated by Jean A. Deschenes III, o f G r a f t o n , Mass. * A handsome Center f o r Wooden Boats s i g n , c a r v e d i n wood (of course!) and donated by Tom P a r k e r o f Seattle. * 14'-3" w h i t e h a l l - s t y l e p u l l i n g boat b u i l t perhaps 40 o r 50 y e a r s ago by Acme Boat Works, o f S e a t t l e . ( I f anyone has heard o f Acme Boat Works, p l e a s e l e t us know.) T h i s i s a p r e t t y boat...but a l s o m y s t e r i o u s . . . and we haven't y e t r e s e a r c h e d h e r background. She was donated by Loren A v e n e l l , o f Redmond. * Another boat we should mention, although i t doesn't b e l o n g t o the Center, i s the 31-foot Navy rowing g i g Dick Wagner purchased l a s t year. T h i s boat needs a l o t o f work, o b v i o u s l y , but Center v o l u n t e e r s cannot c o n t i n u e t h e r e s t o r a t i o n begun l a s t year i n P o r t Townsend u n t i l a s u i t a b l e — t h a t i s , large enough—shop space i s made a v a i l a b l e . From the secondf l o o r view deck, take a b r i d g e a c r o s s t o the boathouse and v i s i t o r ' s dock. (Bridge has 18' c l e a r a n c e , enough f o r s m a l l boats moored inside.) A l s o , boat ramp and p a r k i n g f o r t r a i l e r s i s needed. Probably should have warehouse f o r general storage. T o t a l l a n d and water a r e a — 300' by 500'.
