Many of the cleaning chemicals you buy are concentrates meaning you should mix them with
water prior to use. Often this mixture is represented as a dilution ratio (1:10) or in ounces per
gallon (2 oz per gallon of water).

oday’s liquid floor finishes are applied in layers which dry to form a clear,
glossy, protective coating, making floors easier to clean while enhancing
appearance. The thickness of these layers is determined by the amount of
“solids” (more precisely,
‘non-volatile’ solids) contained in the product.
Solids only determine “how
much stuff” is on the floor.
We recommend the “Rule of
100’s” when choosing a finish. That is, to achieve proper protection and easier
maintenance you should
apply at least 100% solids.
For example, if you buy a
20% solids finish this would
require 5 coats, a 25%
would require only four and
an 18% would need at least
6 coats to equal the same
amount of protection.

aintenance of floors is usually dictated by the floor’s appearance. If the
floor looks bad, you get out the buffer. Anytime you put a machine on your
floor, you have what we refer to as a “controlled abrasion process”. It is a
myth that finishes heat up, melt or are repaired by buffing. All buffing removes a
certain amount of the floor coating and flattens the surface thus returning the
shine. Spraybuff compounds and mop-on restorer products do not add protection
to the floor surface but rather provide lubricity and cooling at the point of abrasion.
All buffing procedures remove a small amount of your finish protection. That is
why it is so important to start with enough finish on the floor in the first place and
why periodic recoating is critical to long term care and extending the “life cycle” of
your floors. Your Ann Arbor Cleaning Supply representative will be happy to
review your individual situation and provide any in-service training programs you
may need for your staff.

What are VOC’s?
VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compound. What this means is that some
chemical products contain organic compounds that turn from liquid to gaseous
state rather rapidly and are therefor considered volatile. So what, you ask. Well
when certain chemicals turn to vapor you have a strong likelihood of inhaling
these compounds and many may cause you harm. Solvent vapors in high exposure are known to kill brain cells. Vaporized acids cause tissue damage. Worker safety and Clean Air regulations are important issues which seek to limit
employee exposure to VOCs. At Ann Arbor Cleaning Supply, all of our manufacturers are working very hard to limit VOCs in the cleaning chemicals which
you use.
