“A FITTING TRIBUTE” — That’s what co-workers of the late Vada Nelson had to say
about the renaming of the Coalgate Public Schools Administration Building. From left
– Tony Gibby, son of Vada Nelson; Jim Girten, former Coalgate School Superintendent;
Allen Hicks, Director of Federal Programs (retired); Yvonne Davidson, superintendent’s
secretary; and Sherry Leaird, federal programs secretary.

Vada Nelson at her retirement party in 2009.
Vada Nelson worked
in Administration at

for 43 years. In May, as
the school was winding
down the 2015-2016 year,
new signs carrying her
name were being erected
at the Administration

is now the Coalgate

About this time in any presidential political year
the national pundits run out of things to say about the
candidates for office. They revert to the tried and true
castigation of “negative” advertising.
Somewhere in the railing about comparative ads, some
commentator will say, “This is the ‘dirtiest’ campaign on
record.” Not even close!
Earlier in our nation’s history, politicians literally
worked in a “free fire” zone. There was no subject, no charge
or no insult that was off limits.
One of my favorite examples was the campaign for
President in 1796. Federalist John Adams was running against
Democratic Republican candidate Thomas Jefferson. There
was no incumbent President because George Washington
had decided not to seek another term.
This particular election was a stem-winder. It started
off with the Federalists distributing a pamphlet that charged
Jefferson with being a dangerous radical. They also said he
cheated his creditors and was a coward when facing British
troops during the Revolutionary War.
Not to be outdone, the Jefferson supporters fought back.
They started a rumor that Adams planned to marry one of his
sons to the daughter of King George III of England to start a
new American monarchy with Adams as King.
In the final days of the 1796 campaign, it looked as
if Jefferson might win the Presidency. Adams supporters
pulled out the final stops and started a rumor that Jefferson
had just died.
Though history failed to record the popular vote, Adams
went on to be the second President of the United States. He
won the Electoral College with a narrow 71 to 68 margin
over Jefferson.
History is littered with “dirty” campaigns in our history.
In a race for Congress in 1828, John Randolph, a powerful
member of the House said this about his opponent. “He is a
man of splendid abilities, but utterly corrupt. Like a rotten
mackerel by moonlight, he shines and stinks.”
In the Presidential campaign of 1884, Grover Cleveland
was accused of fathering a child out of wedlock. His
opponents would organize hecklers to populate crowds at
his campaign rallies.
The hecklers would shout, “Ma, Ma, where’s my Pa?”
Eventually, the Cleveland supporters would shout back,
“Gone to Washington!”
Mud slinging campaigns have not been confined to
this country. In 19th century England, the Fourth Earl of
Sandwich, John Montague, was running for Parliament. In
one of the campaign debates he predicted that his opponent,
John Wilkes, “would either die on the gallows or of a
loathsome disease.”
Wilkes quickly shot back, “That depends, my lord, on
whether I embrace your politics or your mistress!”
The tradition of the political putdown is even older
than American politics. In ancient Greece, the philosopher
Aristophanes was asked what he thought of a young man
that was seeking political office.
He replied, “He has all the characteristics of a popular
politician: a horrible voice, bad breeding and a vulgar
manner.”
As we roll into the November election, remember,
“dirty” politics has a long and sordid history. Even with
today’s electronic enhancements, campaigns today cannot
hold a candle to what has gone on in the past.

And last of all, my favorite story of the week . . .
As the hostess at the casino buffet showed me to my table, I asked her to keep an eye
out for my husband, who would be joining me momentarily. I started to describe him: “He
has gray hair, wears glasses, has a potbelly . . .”
She stopped me there. “Honey,” she said, “today is senior day. They all look like
that.”

A REAL COLLEGE EDUCATION
It started at The Ohio State University one April day: A
bunch of students (between 80 and 150) illegally occupied a
building to protest some kind of grievance.
But it ended with the students getting a lesson they’d
apparently never been taught before.
Instead of coddling the occupiers outside the president’s
office, Vice President Jay Kasey showed up with a message
from the president: He wouldn’t receive a list of their
demands, he wouldn’t negotiate with them, and if the
students didn’t clear out that evening, they’d be arrested and
“discharged from school.”
A stunned student asked: “Discharged, as in . . .?”
Kasey’s one word reply: “Expelled.”
It worked: The students took off that evening. Which
brings us back to that lesson we mentioned: Actions have
consequences.
Now that’s a real education—one more schools need
to teach.

It’s time to take a “memory lane” test . . .
There was a time when the pleasure of tobacco seemed
to outweigh the danger. In this quiz, match each of these
clues with the tobacco brand in the list that follows. Answers
at the end of column.
1. They satisfy . . .
2. I’d walk a mile for one of these.

Are you missing a goat?
A brown milk goat was found at SH 43 and
Forneris Road on July 19. Sale barn stickers
were attached to the goat.
Four convicted sex offenders charged for
failure to register
Four convicted sex offenders living in Coal
County were charged last week with felony
failure to comply with sex offender registration.
The crime is punishable by up to five years in a
correctional facility and/or a fine up to $5,000.
Bench warrants were issued July 27 for
Christopher Vernon Tucker, Lehigh; Timothy
Aaron Ryan, Coalgate; Benjamin Franklin
Shipman, Cottonwood; and Allen Gene Buckley,
Jr., Coalgate.
Shipman has been arrested and remains in
custody on $5,000 bond. He is scheduled for an
August 4 preliminary hearing conference.
False reporting of crime
A Tupelo man was charged July 28 with
misdemeanor false reporting of a crime.
Deputy Anthony Garvin said he was
dispatched to the Tupelo residence on July 20 at
approximately 12:30 a.m. concerning a domestic
disturbance in progress.
Garvin said Kevin Carter Kieckhefer, 26, told
him that his wife struck his right eye, busting
it open, and the left side of his face with her
fist during an argument. His wife denied hitting
him, saying he had come home drunk and told
her he had been in a fight on a bar parking lot
in Ada and asked her to help him. When she
refused, he threatened to call the cops and tell
them she hit him, she said. She had no marks on
her hands, Garvin said.
Kevin Kieckhefer had a strong odor of
alcohol and slurred speech and his left eye was
bloodshot and watery, the deputy said. He had
several marks on his hands indicating he had
been in a fight and his left eye was swollen shut
and bleeding but refused medical treatment.
The Ada Police Department told Garvin they
had no reports of a bar fight or disturbance.
Kieckhefer’s story changed several times, the
deputy said, but he maintained that his wife
struck him.
Kieckhefer was placed under arrest and
transported to jail. He has pleaded not guilty to
the charge and has been released on a personal
recognizance bond. He is scheduled for an
October 7 court appearance.

WAKE UP AMERICA-50
What a year that 2016 is going to be! Both Congress and the United States Senate are still slapping each others
backs and adding amendments (with more amendments) to bills that have NO intention of balancing our budget,
nor are they beneficial to the taxpayers of this country. It happens every day! There in Washington D.C., if you are
not politically correct, the national media will scorn you. Oh, what a pity. Every bill that is beneficial to the betterment of this country, Mr. Obama has vetoed. Why do the three public networks fail to report this, ABC,NBC and
CBS? Bought off with continued corruption, that is probably the answer.
The first candidate to look at in this election year is Donald J. Trump. Did he ask for money to take this job on? The
answer is no .He spent his OWN money during this primary campaign. Is he a business man? The answer is, yes.
Does he know that Washington DC is a rigged bunch of back slapping? Yes he does. Does he know how to create
jobs? Yes he does. Has he taught his children what a work ethic means when it comes to succeeding in today's
world? The answer is yes.
The second candidate is a Democrat. Hillary and her husband lied their way to the governor's office in the state
of Arkansas. Later, Slick Willy and Hillary found a way to fund their first trip to the White House with outside money.
Money talks when it comes from/or with pay backs. Yet, even though he was impeached, the" welfare left" is still in
love with the Clintons. Slick Willy's claim to fame is having oral sex in the Oval Office, lying to the American public,
and then impeachment. Enough said about a man and woman who have degraded the office of the President of
the United States to the laughing stock of the whole planet. We have to salute Bernie through this primary season,
(the true socialist),he gave Hillary a run for her money.
During this Democrat Presidency, our country has suffered the worst economic recovery since World War II. We
can not stand another Democrat as president to lead this country. We need a president that can bring jobs back
to this country. We need a president that is strong on immigration laws that we already have in place. We need a
president that will stand by our Constitution, not try to destroy it, as the present man in the White House has done.
Right now, we have a Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan, who is a "numbers man". He knows how to reduce ignorant
and frivolous spending, and would be an excellent person to keep in his present position. Our Oklahoma Senator
Lankford is also a numbers man. People of Oklahoma need to start paying attention to the cost savings he and
his staff have produced. Markwayne Mullin is our representative in District 2. These guys are working for not only
Oklahoma, but values that our founding fathers set forth in the Constitution.
Hillary continues to follow Obama on refugees and illegals. They want to bring in thousands of these people without
planning for their welfare. They want to bring in thousands of these people without making them go through our
"already established, and in place" immigration laws. The Democrats want to give them a free ride. Who is going to
pay for the strain on our infrastructure? There is no way to properly screen the tens of thousands of refugees from
the middle eastern countries simply due to the overwhelming numbers.
Do not tell me that they can come here on a free ride. Our forefathers, my forefathers, their wives and families, have
fought, died, and sacrificed to preserve the freedoms our Constitution has set forth in very simple terms. We already
have immigration laws established that Obama and Hillary have no respect for.
If you want to talk about health care, many hard working Americans have not been able to afford medical insurance. Obamacare is a disgrace to this nation! Passed by Democrats, this is the worst piece of legislation to EVER
be passed by a Democrat controlled Senate and House. Not one Republican voted for this bill and 65% of the
American people told them that they did not want it. Those people in Washington D.C. who voted for this garbage
need to be eliminated from the decision making process of this country.
From the Revolutionary War, The War Between the States, The Republic of Texas's War with Mexico to win its independence, World War I, World II, the Korean War, and Vietnam, my ancestors have given more than any of these
Democrat invitees. My ancestors have given above and beyond anything, ANYTHING, that this Democrat president or his illegal refugees will ever give to this country.
Anyone in this country today should ask themselves, why am I a registered Democrat?
Do I want higher taxes?
Do higher taxes develop job growth?
Do I want to continue to pay for illegitimate babies born by the thousands here in the United States?
Do people on welfare, who are physically able, need to work for their government check?
Do we need to reform the IRS? The IRS are the folks who collect taxes for those of you who do not know.
Do I want illegals to get free health care when I can not afford it myself?
Do I want to give illegals and their counterparts access to cheap government loans to buy U.S. properties?
Do I want to keep giving those immigrants who get cheap loans and special privileges, food stamps and free
school lunches for all of their kids and relatives?
Do people on welfare have the right to buy cigarettes and have a cell phone paid for by food stamps?
Do I want to support those refugees who have multiple wives and concubines, a free ride here in America when they
have done nothing to earn it? Many of these people are supported by our twisted welfare system, by the way.
We could go on with more and more, yet to a "yellow dog democrat", Hillary is the only one to vote for. Last week, I
stopped in Coalgate, Oklahoma and read this bumper sticker, " I vote only for Democrats". It is amazing to me that
these Democrats show no signs of having any "common sense". Do these people have tunnel vision?
Continue to pray for a change in leadership in this country. Continue to pray that our elected leaders stick to our
Constitution. Continue to pray for our military people around the globe, and most of all, pray that our God comes
back to the forefront in guiding this nation in the years to come. If this nation continues to follow the liberal left and
shun a true and loving God, our downward spiral will accelerate.
This coming November, get your friends, neighbors, and relatives to get out and vote. If you believe in this country,
and the values the Constitution stands for, this will be the most important election held in this country for decades
to come! DECADES !

the courthouse and county offices. He said after reviewing the county handbook, he has discovered there
are very few, if any, safety policies in place. He added there is no courthouse security policy and that the
firearm policy does not address the recent update in gun laws. He said he would like to get with each
department regarding the area of the policy that applies to it and review and make recommendations for
the Board’s approval. Ward suggested Hudson get with Dale Frech from ACCO as well. Hudson said he
would like to set a time frame of 2-3 weeks, but it may take longer. Ward also suggested that Hudson
attend the ACCO safety conference the first week of August so that he can speak to other counties and
get ideas for the policy changes.
Clerk Loudermilk gave the Board an update regarding the telephone installation for the
courthouse. She said Axxion Technology completed the wiring and cabling and the phone company has
been notified that everything should be ready for them to finish the installation.
Old Business:
Johnny Ward asked what Clerk Loudermilk found out about the courthouse flooring. Loudermilk
said she contacted Gary Townsend to ask about liability insurance and he was checking with the
insurance company and would get a copy of the policy to her. She said he hasn’t brought the policy in
yet. Jones said he spoke with Shane Sallee again and he said he would come in this week to talk to him
about the project if needed.
New Business:
Troy Hudson said he has been working closely with OEM regarding the December declaration for
disaster DR-4222. He said once all three districts are completed with the restoration, the county will be
ready to receive the state’s funds of 12.5%.
Johnny Ward said Danny Burns has resigned from the fair board. He said Jerry Stephens is
willing to serve the remainder of Burn’s unexpired term.
th
Ward said he will be gone Monday the 25 to a NACO conference in California. Loudermilk said
Jones will also be gone Monday. Discussion was made regarding the status of the meeting scheduled for
th
Monday. Loudermilk said the Board will need to cancel the regular meeting the 25 and hold a special
meeting before Friday to approve payroll. The special meeting was scheduled for 9:00 a.m. Thursday,
th
July 28 .
Ward said he has heard that the grocery store in town may not reopen until after January. Allen
Leaird said Big 5 is making two runs per day to Atoka to take individuals to the grocery store. He told
Jones that if he could let those in the Tupelo area know, Big 5 could also coordinate a run to Ada for
anyone who needs transportation for groceries. Troy Hudson said the county may need to consider doing
something in case of a disaster if the store will not reopen until after the first of the year. It was also
suggested that Big 5 post flyers to advertise their services to those in need of transportation for groceries.
Ward said he has also heard that the DHS office in Coalgate may be closing in January.
Michael Hensley made a motion to adjourn at 9:32 a.m. Ward seconded the motion. Hensley,
Ward and Jones approved.

Voters Should
Apply Early for
Absentee Ballots
Voters in Coal County who want to have absentee ballots
mailed to them for the August 23 County Commissioners
District 2 Runoff Election should apply now, County Election Board Secretary Vicky Salmon said today. Although
the County Election Board can accept applications for absentee ballots until 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 17,
Salmon urged voters who want to vote by absentee ballot
to apply early.
Candidates for the District 2 Commissioner seat are
Nick Lee and Melvin “Hopper” Jackson.
Absentee ballot application forms are available at the
County Election Board office located at 18 N. Michigan
Street (rock house behind Coalgate Post Office). An online version of the form can be filled out and submitted
electronically at www.elections.ok.gov. A print form can
also be downloaded at that address.
“At least two mail transactions must be made,” Salmon
said. “The County Election Board must mail the ballot
to the voter and the voter must return the voted ballot by
mail.”
Ballots must be in the hands of County Election Board
officials by 7:00 p.m. on Election Day to be counted.
Salmon said any registered voter may vote by absentee
ballot in any election in which he/she is eligible to vote.
However, a voter must be registered and reside at an address within the geographical boundaries of a school district or a municipality to be eligible to vote in school district or municipal elections. It is not necessary to give a
reason for voting absentee.
“While anyone can vote absentee without giving a reason, the law still provides several advantages to absentee
voters in some categories,” Salmon said.
By stating one of the following reasons on their applications, absentee voters can activate special conditions
that make it easier for them to use absentee ballots. The
reasons are:
Voters who are physically incapacitated and voters who
care for physically incapacitated persons who cannot be
left unattended may vote absentee. They may apply only
by mail, by fax, by email, online or via an agent who is at
least 16 years of age and who is not employed by or related
within the third degree of consanguinity or affinity to any
person whose name appears on the ballot.
Voters who are confined to a nursing home in the county may vote absentee. An Absentee Voting Board actually
goes to the nursing home a few days before the election,
sets up a small polling place and allows these persons to
vote under circumstances similar to those at a regular precinct polling place. They may apply only by mail, by fax,
by email, online or via an agent who is at least 16 years of
age and who is not employed by or related within the third
degree of consanguinity or affinity to any person whose
name appears on the ballot.
Military personnel and residents of the county living
overseas and the spouses and dependents of each group are
eligible receive absentee ballots. These voters may apply
only by mail, fax, or by email.
Military personnel should contact the Voting Service
Officers in their units for application forms and additional
information or visit the Federal Voting Assistance Program
website (www.fvap.gov/oklahoma) for more information
and instructions.
Residents of Oklahoma living overseas can obtain the
same materials from any United States military installation
and from United States Embassies and Consulates as well
as on the FVAP website.

Oklahoma is a leader
in obesity and diabetes,
which are contributors to
the leading causes of death,
cancer and cardiovascular

In Coal County, the
prevalence of obesity was
38.4% in 2013. It has been
determined that possible
factors contributing to high
presence of obesity in Coal
County have been narrowed
to lack of physical activity,
as well as minimal fruit and
vegetable consumption.

TSET
Healthy
Living Program will be
highlighting the importance
of having food availability
within the county. Coal
County is considered a food
desert, which is defined
as a town without ready
access to fresh, healthy,
and affordable food.
In order to combat limited
access to food, TSET
Healthy Living Program
requests attendees bring a
non-perishable food item
that will be donated to God’s
Pantry in Coalgate. The
food pantry is available for
any resident living in Coal
County. Those bringing a
non-perishable food item
(one donation per family
member) will receive a
meal consisting of a hot
dog, chips, and water. For
each donation, you will be
entered into a drawing for
a door prize. Door prizes
will be given at 5:30, 6:30,
and 7:30. You do not have
to be present to win.

Drug arrest
A Poteau, OK woman
was charged July 25
with two felony counts
and two misdemeanor
counts involving illegal
drugs after a state trooper
stopped to conduct a
welfare check on a woman
sitting in a vehicle parked
partially on a private
driveway and the shoulder
of the roadway.
Trooper John Ivey said
when he approached the
driver’s side window of
the vehicle, the woman
was sitting with her head
down and did not respond
until he knocked on the
window. She then rolled
the window down, at
which time Ivey detected
an odor of marijuana.
During questioning, the
woman admitted that she
had smoked marijuana
and complied with Ivey’s
request to show it to
him. As she was getting
the marijuana from her
handbag, the trooper
noticed she was trying to
hide something and asked
her to exit the vehicle.
Ivey said he located a
small bag containing five
prescription pill bottles,
only one of which had her
name on it, and two small
baggies, one containing a
white powdery substance
and one containing a
crystal substance.
He
also found a small case
containing a lighter, two
one-hitters, rolling papers,
a push rod and Visine. She
told him the white powdery
substance was cocaine.
The marijuana field tested
positive for THC, he said,
and all other evidence was
sent to the OSBI lab in
McAlester for testing.
Sally Reeves, 27, has
pleaded not guilty to two
felony counts and one
misdemeanor count for
possession of controlled
dangerous substance plus
misdemeanor possession
of drug paraphernalia. She
has been released from
custody on a $7,000 cash
bond and is scheduled for
an August 18 preliminary
hearing conference.

REMEMBER TO VOTE
Melvin "HOPPER" Jackson
District 2 County Commissioner
Dad not Daddy
I am Patrick Jackson, US Army Captain and husband to Melissa. Born and raised in Coal county where I hope to live and die.
I have lived for 28 years and can remember about 15 of those.
As an adult our memories of childhood are but fleeting moments.
Ironically it is those fleeting moments that most clearly define us.
For me, many of those moments were defined by my father, Melvin
Hopper Jackson. I called him Dad but never daddy.
He firmly believed in respect for others and made sure I was
always respectful. I remember him whooping my butt for talking to
an adult in a manner inappropriate for me. He did not care that other kids did those
things or even how other adults treated the person, I would not. The older the person,
the more respect they deserved.
He taught me that lying was counter to who we were. I once told him about my night
out with friends, leaving out parts that may have been incriminating: doing donuts on
public property. Leaving out information implies a lie and is lying. I got a whooping
for that one. It also made me note that he never lies about situations but states either
he cannot say or he tells the truth. To him implying a lie, is lying.
He taught me humility. God gifted me with a desire of reading and learning. So I
sometimes knew things he did not. I quickly learned that those were not moments for
sarcasm or snide smiles but rather a humble approach to help others. That is a piece
of me today. Knowing things is great but should be used to lift others up and not to
boast of yourself.
My dad, Melvin Jackson or Hopper to his friends, has made me in to a man who
respects others, does not lie or even imply lies, and to be humble in everything that I
do because that is who he is. He has led by example and I have truly been blessed
to have a father such as him. He will make a great county commissioner because of
these traits and you would be wise to make the best choice of voting
Melvin Hopper Jackson on 23, AUG 2016!
This is the opion of Patrick Jackson and not the US Army

WEEKEND • AUGUST 5-7
Kenzi Pebworth, Mallorie Humphreys and Madelyne McNutt from Coalgate High School are some of
more than 650 high school cheerleaders and dancers
from across the U. S. who will be representing Varsity Spirit in the world famous London New Year’s
Day Parade.
The individuals invited to perform in the parade
qualified for the trip after being nominated as an AllAmerican at one of the summer camps hosted by Varsity Spirit.
All-Americans are selected to try out based on superior cheerleading, dancing and leadership skills at
camps across the country. Only the top 10% of the
more than 325,000 cheerleaders and dances who attend the 5,000 Varsity summer camp sessions earn the
chance to march in the holiday spectacular.
Kenzi, Mallorie and Madelyn will be among parade performers from all over the world. The theme
for this year’s parade is “Lights, Camera, Action” and
will pay homage to the wonders of film and television.
Cheerleaders, dancers, marching bands, acrobats and
more will make up the 10,000 performers representing
20 countries world wide in the 2017 parade. Established as one of London’s biggest events, the parade is
seen by nearly 300 million people around the world.
In addition to cheering in the parade, All-Americans
will be able to celebrate the holiday’s European style
with the chance to tour some of London’s most historic sites during their seven-day stay.
“This is the 30th year we’ve been able to bring
these talented cheerleaders and dancers to London,
where they can showcase their skills to a very enthusiastic international audience, and explore the rich cultural heritage of this great city,” says Mike Fultz, the
International Event Coordinator for Varsity Spirit.
