Autumn 2013
Hello everyone
I hope you have all had a great summer with your families and friends and that you had a great
time at camp or holiday with the girls from your units if you went away.
I have been wondering where the last five years have gone! Can it really be that long ago that
I was appointed as County Commissioner? As I am now preparing to handover the role to
Pauline (Hall) I wanted to thank you all for all your support during this time. I have had so
much fun and adventure during my five years and done many things I wouldn’t have had the
opportunity to do otherwise. I was extremely lucky to be County Commissioner during some
amazing times for both guiding and our country – the centenary of guiding, the diamond jubilee
and the 2012 Olympics. During the last five years I have been able to meet so many of you at
County, Division, District and unit events and also represented the county at events outside of
guiding. There have been so many highlights – Bucks100Fest, Brownie Circus Day, celebrating
girls’ achievements, the adults’ trip to see the Northern Lights, serving on the council of
Girlguiding, taking part in Dreaming Spires and the competition hike and so many more.
I know Pauline is going to enjoy her new role and that you will all support her as much as you
have supported me. Thank you again for all your help and support. I look forward to seeing
many of you at county events such as the training day and, of course, our county camp in 2015!
Best wishes
Sue

A Double Celebration for 1st Kingshill Brownies
On 12th June the 1st Kingshill Brownie Pack celebrated two important milestones, its 75th birthday and
the 60th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. All past and present members of the Pack
were invited to come and join in the celebrations.
The first part of the meeting was held outside Ashwell Court where, in 1953, the Pack planted a willow
tree to celebrate the Queen's coronation. The Village Society decided to mark this 60th anniversary
with a new plaque which was unveiled by Doreen Phillips, the Brown Owl at the time, and Marjorie
Saunders, the Brownie who actually put the sapling into the hole. After the unveiling, the newest
trainee Guider took her promise.
As the weather was similar to that on coronation day we were all very glad to go back to the village
hall, out of the rain! The rest of the meeting was spent celebrating the 75th birthday of the Pack. It
was absolutely brilliant that four of those original Brownies, from 1938, were able to attend. The past
and present Brownies enjoyed looking at the display of books, badges, photographs and other
memorabilia covering the 75 years of the Pack. The older ones spent time identifying themselves in the
photographs and chatting about those who had been Brownies with them. The meeting ended with the
birthday cake being cut by the oldest, original Brownie and the youngest, current Brownie.

This is a photo of 2nd Loudwater
Brownies with Tawny Owl's Mum. She
came to Brownies and taught the
Brownies how to make origami
boxes. Each Brownie made a box,
decorated it and then filled it with
chocolates to give their dads for Father's
Day.
Great fun was had by all!

A Day in a Field
On a very wet Friday night a group of Guiders
met to put up the wet weather shelters for
the next day, eagerly hoping that the weather
would pass over night. We quickly got the 4
shelters in their places and went home to dry
off and get ready for the next day.
Saturday morning arrived and it was still a
little damp but clearing slowly - the
Rainbows, Brownies and Guides from Newport
Pagnell met on the field at 10 am for a day of
fun, there were 135 girls in total.
The Guides were going to spend the day doing
their outdoor cooking badge, making a 2
course meal and a hot drink – they all
managed to do this and even ate what they had cooked for the lunch. The Brownies and Rainbows spent
the day doing various crafts i.e. sock puppets, windmill, friendship Neckers, bookmarks, giant games,
bug scratch art, and cooking smores (great hit).
Then in the afternoon they had a chance to compete for the sections sports shields doing a variation on
traditional sports which included hopscotch, hoopla, welly wanging, sack racing, skipping, dressing up
race, egg and spoon, picking up smarties with chopsticks, football dribbling and how many balls. The
shields were won by 3rd Newport Pagnell Rainbows and 5th Newport Pagnell Brownies.
We finished the day with
everyone coming back
together for a campfire and
the day finished at 4.45.
Once all the girls had
departed we just needed to
take down the tents which
luckily were now dry - the
weather had been kind to us
after all.
A great time was had by
everyone!

A Sleepover with Bite!
1st Chalfont St Giles Brownies decided to forego the
standard pack holiday this year and instead had a
sleepover on 7 June amongst the dinosaurs at the
Natural History Museum. Eleven wonderfully behaved
Brownies took part along with 4 daring adult leaders:
Ramni Kortman-Bedi (Brown Owl), Sue Spaargaren
(Tawny Owl), Ray Podbury (Unit Helper/Wise Owl) and
Brenda Orr the District Commissioner (affectionately
known as Silver Hedgehog). One of the Brownies
described the experience as an ‘Epic’ night with the
dinosaurs.
Arriving at the museum the excited Brownies were
placed in team Blue Stegosaurs (known as the Blue Stegs) and soon set up camp for the night. Choosing
to sleep on the balcony, commanding the best view of the sleep over, the Brownies went to their first
activity. They became dinosaur scientists and artists as they drew how dinosaurs may have looked by
adding muscle and brightly coloured or camouflaged skins to fossil skeleton outlines. Using their designs
they created their own Dino-Snores t-shirt which they were given as a souvenir. The Brownies loved this
scientific and creative activity. After a late supper, the
Brownies could then meet one of the museum’s 350 scientists
and meet up close and personal fishes from the deepest parts
of the ocean. They even had a chance to touch a 10m giant
(fabric) squid! A 10pm they had a torch-lit treasure hunt in a
dinosaur gallery gathering evidence to find a dinosaur fossil.
This thrilling activity had the Brownies shaking in their boots
as along their journey they came face to face with a roaring
Tyrannosaurus Rex! Lights out was at 12am and peace
gradually descended on the diplodocus as all of the 400
excited children including the Brownies eventually nodded off.
After an early 6:30am rise the super organised Natural History
Museum team handed us all breakfast which was
followed by a superb Animal-Man show. The
Brownies held wild birds of prey and saw armadillos,
skunks, snakes, tarantulas and many other unusual
animals in a very funny and informative show. The
tired but happy Brownies returned home on the
tube, stating that their experience was ‘fantastic’
and ‘legendary’. It was a very memorable pack
holiday which I am sure the Brownies will never
forget.

Discovering the new PODS at Heathrow
1st Iver Heath Brownies were the first Brownies in the world to
travel on an exciting new form of transport at Heathrow
airport called the Pods. The driverless Pods which are also
known as ULTra (Ultra Light Transit), have zero emissions and
use 50% less energy than a bus and were designed and made in
Britain. The trip tied in well with the Brownies world traveller
badge, where they will be exploring different cultures and
countries.
This once in a lifetime
experience was made
possible by Fraser Brown, the Managing Director of Ultra PRT,
who made the PODS and his team. The Brownies had a question
and answer session in the POD boardroom, a tour of the control
room and operated and rode on the PODS.
“The Girlguiding motto is we discover, we grow. Building the
girls confidence through positive experiences and people will
help unlock their full potential, which is extremely important because our girls are tomorrows future
and I feel very privileged to be part of this.” said Mrs. Jenny Barnes, 1st Iver Heaths Brown Owl.
International Cookery Competition 2013
Earlier this year girls from all over the county took part in the
International Cookery Competition 2013 cooking up a storm
despite the adverse weather conditions.
A big congratulations to Team Pegasus (1st Chesham Bois
Rangers) the Senior Section winners on the day the team from 1st
Princes Risborough Guides who were the first place Guide
winners. Congratulations also to Team #3 from 10th Chesham
Guides and the Bollywood Babes from 1st Dinton Guides on
coming second and third.
Of course a huge well done also goes to all of the other teams
who participated and served up some great food to the judges.
Here are some photos from the day and some comments from the
judges.

“I would like to say that I was very impressed not only
with the food but how the girls coped with the adverse
conditions of the day...Some teams went the extra mile
and were a very
good example to
the novice
teams.”
Joan James
“The weather was inclement and indeed hailing and sleeting at
times! All the teams carried on regardless and cooked 3 course
meals in the outdoors on gas rings and were all cheerful. I think a
lot of adults wouldn't be able to achieve this. The standard of the
food was high and it's so encouraging to know all these young
people know how to cook from scratch. A lot said they learnt to
cook from their mums.”
Jane Tilman
“The Bollywood Babes were memorable because they made their own tablecloth from a piece of curtain
material, with matching serviettes tied with a ribbon. Their place mats were laminated pictures from
India and they were dressed up and welcomed us with some dancing!”
Sarah Fraser
“I was impressed with the varied menus, made my dinner party menus look quite mundane.”

Rojo Amigos at the International Cookery Competition
The Rojo Amigos team members were Rachel Dunleavy,
Megan Ellis and Sasha Radford from 2nd Marlow Guides.
Our team chose Spain as our country because of its bright
and colourful food. We cooked Paella and Churros con
chocolate.
We cooked these dishes because they are very traditional in
Spain and we thoroughly enjoyed making them both. First
we cooked the Paella which went very well, then we
started the churros but unfortunately we had a bit of a
delay with them because the rain was splashing in the hot
oil we were using to deep fry the churros in.
Luckily in the end our dishes turned out fine and we were
incredibly proud of them. It was an amazing but challenging
experience cooking outside let alone the freezing cold wind
and horrendous rain! We thought we worked really well as a
team and would like to enter next year!
Feast Day Fun
Here in Chalfont St Peter, we celebrated our Feast Day on
Saturday 29th June and we decided to celebrate it in style.
We sold Mocktails helped by the girls in 5th Chalfont St Peter
Guides, with this and some good sunshine we raised a good sum
for our District.
In our photos you can see our very happy and hard
working helpers from 5th Chalfont St Peter Guides and also one
of me misbehaving (again haha), for some reason I felt a grass
skirt and a crown went well with the day, well it made a few
people laugh!!!!!

A Friend to Animals
Last term our Brownies wanted to gain their Friends To Animals Badge. They decided to do a sponsored
silence to raise money for The Blue Cross Animal Charity.
They all did very well and managed to stay silent for a whole hour! Our Brownies were very enthusiastic
and managed to get lots of people to sponsor them.
A few weeks ago we had a representative from The
Blue Cross come along to one of our meetings and we
were very pleased to be able to present them with a
cheque for £305.90
Here is a picture of us all along with Leo the
Dalmatian.
Well done Brownies!

Royal Snooze at Kew Palace
1st Fulmer Brownies recently enjoyed a very special
night at Kew Palace. They experienced a wonderful
evening of entertainment, which included learning
Georgian dances, including the Quadrille to the music of
Handel, preparing Georgian style desserts in the kitchens
at Kew, and learning how to dress like Georgian ladies,
with carefully applied make-up of the period. The girls
enjoyed a make up lesson and practiced applying the
pale white complexion and red cheeks, together with
huge wigs, fashionable in Georgian times.
King George made an appearance at the late night party,
and accompanied the Brownies on a torch lit tour of Kew
Palace after which the Brownies snuggled down in the sleeping bags in the King’s dining room.
Anna Davies, a 1st Fulmer Brownie commented “We had such a fantastic time and did so many great
things in one evening, and its not often you get to sleep in a royal palace”.

Scuba Diving
I really love swimming but I had never been scuba diving
before. I was very excited about going, but I was a bit
unsure at the same time!
When we got there the instructors told us all about safety
and how to give signal signs under water, so all of our
worries and concerns were dealt with. I think the
instructors were all really helpful and reassuring. Before
we got into the water we had to put on flippers, masks,
and wet suits. After all of that we got into the water and
put on our air tanks. We had to make sure they were on
correctly and things were in the right place. Then we were ready to
dive down...yay!
You had the choice of swimming freely, swimming through hoops,
playing with toys or balancing a ball on a spoon. During the activity
we had pictures taken of us so it was nice to look back and say I did
that!! And to share our amazing experience with our friends and
families too!
Overall I thought scuba diving was fantastic and I would definitely
recommend it to other guides in the area because it’s a great experience
and its lots of fun!

Westminster Abbey, again
I know the title sounds rather derisive, but my friend, Ann Beattie had already taken me as her guest,
to the Scout & Guide Service last November. For me that had been a wonderful experience
reminiscent of my Ranger era when we used to mingle with the 'men' at Rover-Ranger Conferences in
Harrogate. (There-by hangs another tale!).
Ann had told me of her 'Coronation experience': how her mother had brought her only daughter up to
London the day before the biggest event since World War Two but had omitted to pre-book
accommodation. On discovering a decent position on the Mall with the crowds already gathering, they
hunkered down and spent the night there. Twelve year-old Ann was not best pleased at these illplanned arrangements. Had she known, our doughty Girl Guide would have been equipped with
groundsheet and blanket!!

Autumn 2013
In the end, they used newspapers to stave off the coolness of the ground and unfurled umbrellas against
the wind and wet. So it was that Ann was THERE in 1953. And so it was that Ann had the invitation, via
Buckinghamshire's Lord Lieutenant, to attend the 60th Anniversary Service of Her Majesty Queen
Elizabeth ll.
There were two small problems: Ann and her husband had already booked a week's holiday in Brixham;
but that was easily fixed with British Rail. Then, who would go with her? In the short time that she had
to reply, Ann found that I was the only 'possible' who could.
Not having to wear Guiding uniform posed us with decisions of what to wear! We had time to ensure we
were kitted out appropriately. We spent an enjoyable half day in Reading trying on hats and fascinators
before deciding there were other ways to obtain head gear and possibly donate to a charity or two at
the same time! By the time we met up on The Day at Westminster Methodist Central Hall, we looked
good enough to be photographed by Japanese tourists!!
Having met as planned, we made use of the Ladies Room and there was the Faith Advisor from Norfolk
and Queen's Guide who eventually carried the flask of oil in the service. She was so modest that we did
not understand the importance of her role from what she told us.
Everyone had to be airport-style searched before they entered the Abbey which involved a long queue.
This was good for the tourists as they had time to view us!! The weather was good and everyone was
relaxed and chatty so the time soon passed. We found ourselves in Poet's Corner again, just behind all
the Royal Family. Seated next to us were a young Guider and her Guider mother, in uniform, from
Cockermouth, Cumbria where the flooding had wrought devastation in 2009. They had kept Guides and
Brownies going throughout the chaos that ensued, despite the flooded hall and damaged equipment, so
that the girls had some normality in their
life.
The Abbey service many of you will have
viewed on television; which we also did,
enabling us to see what would otherwise
have been hidden from our sight. We did
have a direct view of Ed Milliband and Prime
Minister Cameron. The latter read the
difficult first lesson in a clear and measured
fashion.
What you would not experience were the
'spine-crackling' sounds of choirs, trumpets
and organ in that hallowed, vaulted place.
Nor would you have the wonderful sensation
of singing the hymns with the 2,000-plus
congregation!!
I felt very privileged to have been at the service and I am indebted to Ann for inviting me!

Trefoil Friendship Day
Recently our we had a Trefoil Friendship Day at Dover Hedge, here
are some photos taken during the day.
There were about 50 people present, with friends coming from as
far as South Devon, North London, Leighton Buzzard, Wendover,
Princes Risborough and various other spots!
We had a lovely lunch followed by an afternoon filled with
activities both inside and out. There was an archery
demonstration and then the opportunity to try it ourselves, plate
spinning and other circus skills, a Silverstone car racing game, and
indoors several crafts and some wall quizzes and other games, and,
of course, lots of chat!!
We had tea and cake followed by a campfire which sounded really good. All in all a very enjoyable
day which had been the brainchild of Doreen Griffiths, one of our older members.

Wow! Everyone has been so busy! Many congratulations to all the Leaders below who have completed
the Leadership Qualification or extra Modules; and also to the Unit Teams, Commissioners and Mentors
who have helped them along the way. It has kept me busy as well, and I do like “busy”. There are still
around 250 Leaders-in-Training in the County, so keep at it, especially all you Brownie Leaders-inTraining. Completing the Leadership Qualification is going to be a great way to start celebrating The
Big Brownie Birthday. There are no Young Leader Qualifications to report this time, so who’s going to be
first on the next list?
