Lyric Opera Lecture
The Passenger – Weinberg - rsvp
TECHNOLOGY
Thursday, March 5, 3:30-4:30pm in the SST
The action alternates between a ship in the early 1960s and the
Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. On board the ship
en route to Brazil, Liese, a former Auschwitz guard, sees a woman who
resembles a former prisoner. Shocked, she tells her diplomat husband,
Walther, about her past. In the camp, Liese oversees women from all
over Europe and knows that a young Pole, Marta, is key to maintaining
control. An officer announces that a prisoner will play the commandant’s
favorite waltz on the violin. Tadeusz, Marta’s fiancée, arrives and they
have a few moments together (permitted by Liese). Tadeusz hears from
Liese that he may see Marta again, but he refuses, not wanting to be
obligated to Liese. When a guard yells, “Selection Time,” some of the
prisoners are taken to their death. Liese tells Marta that it is not her
time, and that Marta will see Tadeusz’s concert. On board ship, Liese and
Walter determine that even if the passenger is Marta, they will ignore
her, but Liese is horrified when the passenger asks the band to play the
commandant’s waltz. At the concert in the camp, Tadeusz plays the Bach
Chaconne instead of the waltz. His violin is smashed and he is beaten. In
the last scene, Marta expresses her hope that all of those who suffered
will be remembered. Howard Robins from the Educational Department of
the Lyric Opera will present.
After the lecture the group is getting together for cheese and fruit
refreshments for $12 and a cash bar. Members are invited to this event
but must reserve and pay by calling Nancy at 847-438-4262.

Garlands Selfie?
WHAT’S YOUR
Throughout 2015 The Garlands marketing program will invite prospective members
to “Picture Your Selfie at The Garlands.” The ads, direct mail and online campaigns,
one of which is featured here, will depict some of the many benefits of Garlands
living–being closer to family, traveling the world, enjoying the company of new
neighbors, volunteering, taking a class, loving maintenance-free living . . . and the
list goes on.
To help others visualize The Garlands lifestyle, we’re asking members to submit their
“selfie” photos to our “What’s Your Garlands Selfie” photo contest. Photo judging
criteria includes:
1. Photo has “selfie” characteristics (see sidebar).
2. Photo tells a Garlands story and helps viewers better appreciate what living at The Garlands is like.
3. Photo subjects agree to let The Garlands use the image for marketing purposes.
4. Submit your “selfie” via email to [email protected] by March 31.
5. If you would like to check out The Garlands “selfie stick” for a wider angle shot, please see Nate. These are a lot of fun!
We hope members will have lots and lots of fun documenting and submitting their
Garlands selfies to the cause!

flattering and made to

Excess Mail?
There are a few ways to remove unwanted mail and
decrease paper going into our recycling bins. 1: Some
mailings have a ‘postage paid’ return envelope. Place
the piece of paper with your name and address after
writing ‘remove from mailing list’ near your name in
the envelope and send it off. 2: Most companies and
charities have an 800 phone number. Make a quick call
and ask to be removed from their lists. Usually fast
results. 3: On the internet find the company and either
at the top or bottom of their home page you will find a
‘contact’ phone or email address. Give your name and
address as written on the mailing. 4: Ordering from
catalogs? Ask the ones you use to not sell your name
to other companies!
Results may reduce our paper quantity. Charges to The
Garlands are for each container emptied.

Ed and Jean Tolle Residence 3108
Ed and Jean have moved eleven times since they were married, 58 years ago. The first
place they lived was in Texas. They lived in Fox Point in Barrington for 30 years and
also in Huntley, IL.
Ed was an Air Force pilot stationed in South Carolina. Ed met Jean at Stanford
University. He worked for Exxon and then United Airlines. Jean taught writing classes
and has been a member of the Barrington Writer’s Workshop for years. Jean published
a book written about the only girl in Little League Baseball for 4th and 5th graders
entitled “The Great Peter Penney.” She also won an award for her book, “The Galty
Prize,” a story about an Irish horse.
They belong to Barrington Hills Country Club where Ed likes to golf and shoot skeet.
He also likes to read and travel. Jean enjoys reading, working crossword puzzles
and traveling as well as writing. Ed spends time raising money for Good Shepherd
Hospital.
They have two children, a boy and a girl: their son Jeff lives on Baker Lake here in
Barrington and their daughter, Anne, lives in Fox Point.
Carol Tucker Residence 1317
Carol has lived in Barrington for 60 years, but spent
her earlier years in Wisconsin and Colorado. She
became a Nurse’s Aid at the age of 16 and practiced
nursing until she retired. During her career, Carol was
a head nurse at Passavant Hospital in Chicago. Her
unit was the first to transfer to Wesley Hospital in the
merger that formed Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
While working at Northwestern, Carol earned her
bachelor’s degree in Nursing at Loyola University.
Carol worked for Evanston Hospital as an instructor
in the nursing education department, moving on to
manage its quality assurance, discharge planning and
home health care programs. She obtained her Master’s
degree from Northwestern University.
Carol and her first husband, Chuck Meroni, lived
in Barrington Hills, where they raised their five
children. They enjoyed breeding and showing German
Shepherds. Carol volunteered for the American Red
Cross in Chicago high schools, teaching Mother and
Baby Care. She maintained her nursing skills by
working in several new suburban hospitals to help
organize their patient care areas.
Carol was a Girl Scout leader and Den Mother, who
also helped Boy Scouts obtain their First Aid badges.
She belonged to a small choral group that entertained
at local events. Carol helped organize the Barrington
Chapter of the Lyric Opera Guild and was a charter
member.
Carol was married to Jack Croneigh, in 1979, and they
enjoyed many years together until he passed away
in 1991. At that time, she accepted a Vice President

position in a southern
Illinois hospital, assisting
staff to deal with a potential
merger. She worked with
the Pharmacy, Physical and
Respiratory Therapy and Nursing
Department staff to develop
strategies for dealing with the
merger and maintaining their
positions in the new system.
During this period, Carol began seeing long-time
friend, Norm Tucker, who was a retired partner and
practice director in the Arthur Andersen Accounting
Firm. He was also active in forming the Barrington
Presbyterian Church. She and Jack had known Norm
and his wife, Mary, for many years. Norm asked Carol
if she would consider retiring early and get married
to enjoy the rest of their lives traveling together.
They indeed “traveled” for twenty years, enjoying
Norm’s northern Wisconsin home, Beaverwood,
in the summer; their home in Pensacola Beach, FL
in the winter and many other destinations in the
United States and in other countries. They moved to
St. Simons, GA for winters after the third hurricane
destroyed their Pensacola home.
Carol and Norm were members of Barrington Hills
Country Club until shortly before he passed away in
May of 2014, and that is when Carol decided to move to
the Garlands.
Carol has felt very fortunate to have three daughters
and their families living in Barrington and one living
near New Orleans. She also appreciates the support of
her nine stepchildren and their families.

Welcome
Robby and Karen Robinson
Residence 1107
Robby grew up in Oklahoma. His mother was born
in Oklahoma (when it was Indian Territory) and flew
airplanes. Robby went into the Navy and studied to
be an electrician. He trained in the subject matter
of radar. He attended University of Tulsa then went
on to Northwestern University for a Masters degree.
Robby also taught at Northwestern. He worked for
Quaker Oats for many years and was instrumental
in the marketing push behind instant oatmeal. He
went to a conference in St. Croix and loved the
adventure of island living, so when he retired at the
age of 43, he moved to the British Virgin Islands in
the Caribbean. The island he built his house on is
called Great Camanoe. He also bought and managed
a resort called Marina Cay for the first 10 years. He
enjoys fishing and scuba diving. In the 1960s, when
Robby first went down there, the airport was just a dirt
landing strip.
Karen grew up in Woodstock. Her parents were music
majors and played the oboe and violin in the Elgin
Symphony. She attended Miami of Ohio. She lived in
Chicago and Beverly Shores, Indiana. She became a
food stylist working with still photography for ads and
TV commercials mostly in Chicagoland. Karen has a
brother in Palatine and cousins who live in Barrington.
She has three stepchildren from her first marriage.
The Robinsons met 27 years ago at a Venetian Night
party. They talked all night long and dated for five
months until Robby went back to Great Camanoe
Island. He wanted Karen to return with him, however
Karen had an obligation to the photography studio
she owned with her ex-husband. Robby and Karen
did not communicate for two years until Robby came
back to the states with a consulting job. He called
Karen’s mother who gave him her phone number and
they have been together ever since and married for 25
years.
Karen retired at age 62 and now enjoys gardening fresh
herbs and cherry tomatoes. She wants to explore Tai
Chi up in our Fitness Center. Robby did some freelance
marketing after his retirement.
They have a 9-year-old Border Collie named Alfie.
Dr. Lloyd and Mary McCarthy Residence 1106
Mary and Lloyd McCarthy moved to the Garlands on Halloween 2014 after living for
25 years at Lake Barrington Shores. Mary was a native of DesPlaines, and Lloyd came
from a farm in southwestern Minnesota. In 1942 he showed the champion Shorthorn
steer at the Minnesota 4-H Junior Lifestock show. After serving in the U.S. Navy in
WWII he went to Carleton College where he met Mary. Both earned their B.A. degrees
in 1950. A fellow classmate was Garlands member Carol Holmes with whom Lloyd
dissected cats and sharks in their Comparative Anatomy class.
Lloyd earned his MD degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and
Dentistry in Rochester, N.Y. He and Mary were married in 1952.
Mary had a brief career in market research. Later she was Secretary to the President
of Kendall College while Lloyd served his residency at Evanston Hospital. They came
to Barrington in 1956 where Lloyd had a 35-year career as a solo general practitioner
affiliated with Sherman Hospital, Elgin. He is a past president of the Medical Staff.
Locally, Lloyd and Mary have been active supporters of the Citizens for Conservation
organization and have received its Great Blue Heron award for their services. Mary
was a longtime member of the Garden Club of Barrington and received recognition
primarily for her nature and conservation projects and programs.
As avid travelers, the McCarthys have visited all seven continents and the four
continental capes. Both enjoy photography, especially nature and travel subjects.
Their images have appeared in multiple publications, and their travelogs and
“naturelogs” have been presented both locally and nationally. Both have been elected
Fellows of the Photographic Society of America.

FROM THE
Executive Director
All in Perspective
Last year at this time, I was writing about our horrific winter and how we were
all ready to think spring, day-light savings time and planning for gardens.
Yes, we have had a cold winter, but by no means have we experienced what
New England continues to get dished out. Mother Nature has not been kind
to that region with nearly 100 inches of snow and closing in on their all-time
record of 107 inches.
Here in Barrington, we are fortunate to have experienced a moderate amount
of snow. The impressive part of our existence is the great public service
of clearing roads by governmental agencies and our own team of snowmovers here at The Garlands. We are blessed with quality utilities and are
therefore warm and safe. During the recent heavy snow, I was absolutely
impressed and filled with gratitude to fifteen team members who spent the
night on campus to ensure all services, care and safety of the buildings were
maintained. When the element of safety and service is added to the many
exercise and activity choices, what’s so bad about winter?
I pose this rhetorical question, partly to ground myself, as I often wish days
and weeks to fly by, anticipating warmer temperatures, flowers, green grass
and golf! As I wish those days away, I am looking over the gift of each day
and the opportunity to converse with a new acquaintance, absorb history via
printed word or television and any other new adventure that presents itself.
There are even many positive things to cherish during the winter. Some of
my favorites are homemade soup, the scent of burning firewood, clear, crisp
air and, yes, the natural beauty of clean, white snow.
Sure, we will soon be setting our clocks back and daylight hours are naturally
getting longer. Until our brief Chicago Spring arrives, I am savoring the
current season.
Warm regards,
David A. Loop, Executive Director
