SPCC Members Raise
over $11,000 for MVP!!!!
THANK YOU members and staff for the
incredible effort to raise money for the
Mammography Voucher Program. This
originated as a Women's Golf Association
fundraiser and developed into an all-club event
with help from tennis and social members. This
year we invited men to join us and twelve brave
men stepped up to the plate, some even
wearing pink! Our members showed their
generosity and concern for those underserved
women and men who need early detection.
There were lots of scramble winners, raffle and
silent auction winners but more importantly we
were able to give the M.V.P. the largest check
ever raised on their behalf. For those who
attended the luncheon, we heard the Project
Director of the program, Sherrl Fry,
passionately explain why this program is so
important to Pinellas County. She returned a
week later to personally say "thank you"
to as many people as possible.

Hard to believe that I have been at St Petersburg Country
Club for six months already. I feel honored to be able to
spend my day with such wonderful people. I have enjoyed
getting to know the membership and I am amazed at the
constant effort to make SPCC the best country club in the
area and beyond. I would like to thank everyone for the
comments and suggestions about the club and ask that the
feedback continues in order to meet all of our goals.
The new menu has been rolled out with a separate lunch and
dinner menu. We will continue to run specials and can always
cater to diet restrictions. The new happy hour $5 appetizers
will rotate each week and feature seasonal items to keep our
menus interesting and current with culinary trends.
The Wednesday entertainment will have a different performer
each week. Ron and Laurie from Sequel will be here on the
4th and on the 11th we will have Dale Williams who is a Sinatra
impersonator. Pat Henry will be with his key board on the 18th
and Katie Guglielmo will be on the Grand piano on the 25th.
We do have entertainment every other Friday during March
and on the second Friday of the month Al Ruggerio and JC
will be back and we are expecting a large crowed that night.
On the last Friday of the month we welcome back Tom Arnold.
Easter Sunday will be here in early April on the 5th. The club
will be hosting a grand buffet and we will be very busy so
please make reservations.
At your service,
Joe Brooks, General Manager

There have been a couple of rule infractions that have been brought my attention of late and are common at every club. The most
common infraction is the “giving” of putts, “that’s good”. This if perfectly fine if you have your own game or in a match play event.
All putts must be holed when you play in a stroke play quota game where there are several groups; otherwise a putt hanging over
the hole becomes 2-foot putt that is easily missed by any player. Protect the field and don’t give putts. Secondly, play the ball
down, the only time you can touch a ball in play is if you need to identify a ball sitting in a position where you cannot see your
mark. If you do need to lift a ball for identification, you must tell your fellow competitors, lift and place the ball back in the exact
position. You should mark your ball so that it is easily identified. Every player has a responsibility to protect the field, if you see a
rules infraction, call it attention to the player, if there is a dispute the staff will settle the dispute. Disputes will happen, as long as
we are respectful courteous there should not be any hard feelings.
Members will ask me how we came up with the name of the Splinter Game. The late great Darrell Springer split from the once
“$5.00 game” around ten years ago. He was tired of players in that group giving putts and not fully playing by the rules in one
fashion or another. Darrell and a few of his buddies started another game, The Splinters. We take pride in this club where we
know the rules well and play by the rules and etiquette set forth by the
USGA and R&A.

In recognition of his 27 years of
outstanding service to the club, the
SPCC Board of Governors recently
voted unanimously to rename the tennis
facility in Sam’s honor.
Henceforth it will be known as the “SAM
VUILLE TENNIS CENTER at the
St. Petersburg Country Club”.
Sam’s background includes several
Florida State Championships as a
junior. He was one of only two players in
Florida history to hold the #1
ranking in all four junior age divisions.
Sam went on to the University of
Alabama where he led the Crimson Tide
to its first SEC Championship. On the
professional circuit, he
competed at both Wimbledon and the
U.S. Open. In 2007, Sam was inducted
into the Florida Tennis Hall of Fame.
Sam now spends countless hours
teaching tennis to men, women and
children of all ages and skill levels. He
has also worked tirelessly for 11 years as
the Tournament Director of the
Raymond James SSGP, one of the
premier events among the USTA
National Category II tournaments.
Best wishes to Sam for many more
years of great tennis!
Thank you for
yet another
great Super
