Early on the morning after leading LSU to the 2007
Early on the morning after leading LSU to the 2007 BCS National Championship,
coach Les Miles spoke passionately about the unique nature of the Fighting Tigers.
"They understand what being pinned down means," said Miles, who saw his team
on four occasions erase fourth-quarter deficits to earn victories during its 12-2 season.
"They understand what it takes to come back and fight and overcome hurdles.”
When top-ranked LSU lost its ’07 regular-season finale to Arkansas, it appeared
the Tigers’ chances for a national title had been extinguished. Though disappointed,
LSU quickly turned its attention to the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta, where the
Tigers – playing without starting quarterback Matt Flynn and suffering from a rash of
injuries – overcame a fourth-quarter Tennessee lead to post a 21-14 victory over the
Vols.
Ecstatic about winning LSU’s third conference title this decade, yet frustrated
about apparently falling short of a BCS title game berth, the Tigers flew home to Baton
Rouge expecting to receive a Sugar Bowl invitation. However, losses that evening by
Missouri and West Virginia gave LSU – which ascended to No. 2 in the BCS rankings –
the cherished opportunity to meet No. 1 Ohio State in the BCS National Championship
Game.
Before a raucous crowd of 79,651 in the Louisiana Superdome, the Tigers
overcame an early 10-0 Ohio State lead with a 31-0 barrage in a 24-minute stretch to
storm past the Buckeyes, 38-24.
LSU, which had won its first BCS title in 2003, became the first two-time national
champion in the 10-season BCS era.
Miles, who owns a magnificent 34-6 record in three seasons at LSU, identified the
Tigers’ unyielding spirit as the characteristic that defined his squad.
“There may be more talented teams,” Miles said. “But I can promise you this: this,
by far and away, is the finest football team this year."
One Down, One to Go
LSU coach Les Miles and All-America defensive tackle
Glenn Dorsey hoist the SEC Championship trophy after the
Tigers’ 21-14 win over Tennessee at the Georgia Dome in
Atlanta. The next day, the Tigers watch the BCS Selection
Show and learn they will play Ohio State in the BCS
National Championship Game.
Let’s Talk
Glenn Dorsey, the 2007 recipient of the Outland, Lott,
Nagurski and Lombardi Awards, speaks to the media in the
Louisiana Superdome two days prior to the Tigers’ matchup
with Ohio State. Defensive back Jai Eugene (4) provides
additional entertainment during Media Day activities.
Digging Deep
Members of the LSU squad help to construct two new
baseball fields at the Rosenwald Boys and Girls Club in New
Orleans one day prior to the National Championship Game.
Mascots Mike the Tiger and Brutus the Buckeye also
participate in the project, which brings new life to a
playground that was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.
Championship Moments
Featured are images capturing the essence of a remarkable year as LSU became the first school
to claim two national championships in the BCS era, which began with the 1998 season.
Title Tour
Les Miles displays the BCS Coaches’ Trophy
from the Royal Sonesta Hotel in New Orleans
after leading LSU to a 38-24 victory over Ohio
State in the National Championship Game.
Miles also paid a postgame visit to ESPN’s
GameDay set in the Superdome, and
participated in a press conference the next
morning at the Marriott Convention Center.
High Profile
The 2007 National Championship flag is raised above the North
end of Tiger Stadium on Jan. 19, 2008, as thousands of LSU
fans braved frigid conditions to honor the Fighting Tigers. The
national championship aftermath also includes a ceremony with
Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal in Baton Rouge and Mardi
Gras parades in New Orleans featuring LSU players and
coaches as special guests. Les Miles participates in the filming
of an ESPN SportsCenter commercial and the design of the
Tigers’ 18-wheel equipment truck is updated to include LSU’s
2007 title next to its 2003 and 1958 national crowns.
“It's good to welcome you back. Proud you're here. Nothing like being called,
‘National Champs.’ LSU has the honor of being the first school to win two BCS
titles. This year there is no split.” - President George W. Bush • April 7, 2008
Hail to the Tigers
LSU’s tour of the nation’s capital features
visits to several landmarks, including the
White House, the Lincoln Memorial, the
Washington Monument, the Jefferson
Memorial, the Pentagon, and the Tomb of the
Unknown Soldier.
The National Champions arrived in Washington, D.C. on April 7, 2008, to meet with President George W. Bush at
the White House. The Tigers presented him with an LSU jersey and a football signed by the team captains.

The LSU Defense
REVIEW
HISTORY
LSU
For the first time in the Les Miles era, the Tigers will open a season with a new defensive coordinator, as Doug Mallory and
Bradley Dale Peveto have been promoted to co-defensive coordinators for 2008. Mallory, who will continue to coach the
secondary; and Peveto, who will still oversee the linebackers, take over an LSU defense that returns five starters, including
preseason All-America selection Tyson Jackson and linebacker Darry Beckwith. The Tigers have ranked among the top five in
the nation in total defense in each of the past three seasons. Despite the loss of All-Everything defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey,
the strength of the LSU defense will be up front. Joining Jackson up front for the Tigers will be tackle Ricky Jean-Francois, the
defensive MOP of the BCS National Championship Game; and sixth-year senior Kirston Pittman. The Tigers will have a pair of
first-time starters at cornerback due to the departure of Chevis Jackson and Jonathan Zenon.
Defensive Line
Senior defensive end Tyson Jackson (36 tackles, 3.5 sacks in 2007) headlines
the list of starters up front for the Tigers. Joining Jackson on the Tiger
defensive line are tackles Charles Alexander (6 tackles in 3 games in 2007)
and Ricky Jean-Francois (9 tackles, 1.5 TFL in 2 games in 2007) and defensive
end Kirston Pittman (68 tackles, 8 sacks in 2007). Alexander will return to the
lineup after missing the final 11 games a year ago with a knee injury. JeanFrancois played in just the final two games in 2007 after being academically
ineligible for the first four months of the season. Senior Marlon Favorite (28
tackles in 2007), junior Al Woods (22 tackles in 2007), and junior Rahim Alem
(8 tackles, 2 sacks in 2007) will also be among the rotation on the defensive
line in 2008.

Secondary
The LSU linebacking corps will revolve around Darry Beckwith, who will occupy
the middle for the Tigers. A second-team All-SEC pick in 2007, Beckwith had 65
tackles and 6.5 tackles for loss last year. Perry Riley and Kelvin Sheppard
emerged from spring practice as the starters at the outside linebacker
positions, taking the place of departed seniors Luke Sanders and Ali Highsmith.
The Tigers will have to fill three spots in the secondary due to the departure of
All-America safety Craig Steltz and cornerbacks Chevis Jackson and Jonathan
Zenon. Free safety Curtis Taylor (54 tackles, 3 interceptions in 2007) is the
lone returning starter in the secondary for the Tigers. Sophomore Chad Jones
(34 tackles, 2 sacks), junior Harry Coleman (18 tackles) and junior Danny
McCray (64 tackles, 3 sacks) are all competing for the other safety spot. All
three players will play in LSU’s sub-packages. Junior Chris Hawkins and
sophomore Jai Eugene emerged from spring practice as the starters at
cornerback.

TIGERS
COACHES
REVIEW
The LSU offense is stacked once again as the Tigers return eight starters, including four offensive linemen, from a squad that
set school records for total yards and points per game during the 2007 National Championship season. Perhaps the two biggest
losses on the offensive side of the football from a year ago are that of quarterback Matt Flynn and running back Jacob Hester.
In the absence of Flynn, the Tigers will turn to a pair of young quarterbacks in junior Andrew Hatch and redshirt freshman
Jarrett Lee. Hatch is a transfer from Harvard who saw action in two games last year, while Lee spent his rookie season with the
Tigers handling scout team duties. The strength of the Tiger offense will be up front as senior Brett Helms (center), senior
Herman Johnson (left guard) and junior Ciron Black (left tackle) anchor an offensive line that could be considered among the
best in the SEC. The Tigers will employ a running back-by-committee approach in the backfield, while Demetrius Byrd and
Brandon LaFell highlight a group of talented wide receivers.
Quarterback
Wide Receiver
The quarterback position will be the least experienced position on the offensive
side of the football for the Tigers in 2008. Gone is senior Matt Flynn, who
directed the Tigers to a total of 10 offensive school records in 2007. In his place
will be junior Andrew Hatch or redshirt freshman Jarrett Lee. Hatch, a transfer
from Harvard, is the only quarterback on the LSU roster that has taken a
collegiate snap. Hatch saw action in two games a year ago, while Lee spent the
season serving as the scout team quarterback. True freshman Jordan Jefferson
joins the Tigers in 2008 after a sensational prep career.
The Tigers return two of their top three receivers from a year ago in junior
Brandon LaFell and senior Demetrius Byrd. A year ago, LaFell and Byrd
combined for 85 catches and over 1,200 with Byrd leading the squad with seven
touchdowns and LaFell adding four. Other players in the mix to contribute at
receiver this year include junior Jared Mitchell (13 rec., 143 yards in 2007),
junior R. J. Jackson, sophomore Terrance Toliver (10 rec., 249 yards, 3 TDs in
2007), and junior Chris Mitchell (5 rec., 56 yards in 2007).

Tailback
Despite losing Jacob Hester, who rushed for over 1,000 yards a year ago, to the
NFL, the Tigers are loaded at tailback with the return of three juniors in Keiland
Williams (478 yards, 6 TDs in 2007), Charles Scott (324 yards, 5 TDs in 2007)
and speedster Trindon Holliday (364 yards, 2 TDs in 2007), along with
sophomore Richard Murphy (230 yards, 2 TDs in 2007). Williams and Scott are
the most experienced of the bunch, however, Murphy showed flashes of
brilliance last year in his first season on the field with the Tigers. Holliday is one
of the fastest players in college football and can change the complexion of a
game anytime he touches the football.

Offensive Line
The strength of the Tiger offense will be up front as LSU returns four starters,
including All-SEC selection Herman Johnson at left guard. Brett Helms, one of
the most productive linemen in school history, returns for his third season as
LSU’s starting center, while Ciron Black, a second-team All-SEC pick in 2007,
holds down the left tackle spot. Junior Lyle Hitt, a former defensive lineman, will
start at right guard for the second-straight season, while a pair of sophomores,
Joseph Barksdale and Jarvis Jones, will compete for the right tackle spot.

Fullback
Senior Quinn Johnson returns as LSU’s starting fullback after playing in 14

Special Teams
Under Les Miles’ watch, the LSU special
teams has been one of the strengths of the
team and that should continue in 2008 with
the return of All-SEC place kicker Colt David
and return specialist Trindon Holliday. David
set both LSU and SEC records a year ago
with 147 total points, which included kicking
a school-record 26 field goals. Holliday will
continue to return kickoffs for the Tigers
after a 26.2 yards per return average a year
ago. In two years, Holliday has returned two
kickoffs for touchdowns. One change for the
Tigers this year is that of Joe Robinson, who
joined the staff during the spring and will
handle special teams coordinator
responsibilities. The Tigers will have a firsttime punter for the second-straight year
with the departure of Patrick Fisher. Brady
Dalfrey and Josh Jasper go into fall camp
competing for punting duties for the Tigers.
