December 2, 2005 ©HMMA 2005 HYUNDAI ALABAMA TEAM MEMBERS VISIT KOREA TO LEARN SANTA FE PRODUCTION S eventy-five Team Members from Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, LLC (HMMA) recently traveled to Namyang Research and Development Center near Seoul, Korea. The purpose of the over 14,000 mile round-trip journey was for assembly and quality process training to prepare for the upcoming all new 2007 Santa Fe sport utility vehicle (SUV) to be manufactured at the Montgomery plant. Building of the SUV prototype has begun at the plant and production is scheduled for spring 2006. Namyang R&D Center is a cutting-edge facility encompassing the whole design process, from pre-design studies, prototyping and full-scale aerodynamic testing to crash testing and final test driving along a 60km test track. Employing over 6,500 engineers, Namyang R&D serves as the hub of Hyundai-Kia’s global network and consolidates the company’s research efforts around the world. “The new R&D Center in Namyang is probably one of the finest in the world,” said John Kalson, Director of Production for the Hyundai Alabama plant. “I continue to be impressed by the level of detail and planning that goes into each Hyundai operation and Team Members learn quality training program.” Kalson continued, “I was equally impressed, but not surprised, by all our Team on 2007 Santa Fe SUV Members and how well they adapted to the challenge. It was as if they had been doing this for years.” The seventy-five Team Members consisted of production workers, engineers and management. Team Members selected for this initial training will in turn train others as the INSIDE INSIGHTS plant progresses into pre-production this month and start of production next spring. The training program was conducted during three separate trips of twenty-five Team HYUNDAI ALABAMA TEAM Members each, traveling at two-week intervals. Santa Fe production at the Montgomery plant is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2006. The American-built Santa Fe is scheduled to debut at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in midJanuary 2006. Currently built at the Ulsan plant, Hyundai is targeting 2006 sales of 60,000 Santa Fe units annually, while exports are projected to reach 150,000 units. Quality Corner Quality is Everyone’s Responsibility The Importance of One By Neil Grehlinger In order to be the most effective within HMMA, please remember that every job function has one or more internal customers and that we all serve the final customer. Three important questions we should answer in relation to our jobs that will help us to establish our mindset and remain focused are: 1. Who is (are) the customer(s) of what I do? 2. What are my customer’s requirements? 3. How do I consistently satisfy those requirements day after day? 2 HMMA Cookbook From the Kitchen of: Debbie Searcy, General Affairs Name of Dish/Recipe: Holiday Cheese Log Type of Dish: Appetizer Serves: 8 Origin of Recipe: American Ingredients: 4 cups shredded cheddar cheese 4-3 oz. pkgs. cream cheese, softened 1/2 cup chopped pimento-stuffed olives 3 Tbsp. mayonnaise 1/2 Tsp. This program aims to provide new toys to underprivileged children. Last year, HMMA was instrumental in assisting the less fortunate children in our community. With the devastation created by the extensive hurricane season this past summer, this year’s Toys for Tots drive is especially critical to the Marine Corps Reserve. Please consider showing your support of our local community and that of our local USMC Reserve unit by purchasing a new, unwrapped toy for a less fortunate child. Pick-up boxes will be located at the entry of each shop until December 12. Toys should be new and unwrapped. The collection of toys by the US Marines is scheduled for December 14. Contact the Diversity Department at 387-8103 for more details. HMMA Strives to be Leader in Industry Dear HMMA Team, Hard work abounds here at HMMA. P roduction Quality Control Our first step in achieving this milestone is our Finance pre-certification audit. A third party consulting firm will be on site to conduct a pre-certification audit of our HMMA Business Management System to gauge exactly where HMMA stands for certification. The third party will be on site from December 12 through December 17, 2005. They will conduct audits on all departments and on all shifts. We ask that each department be prepared and cooperate. In this first round of audits, we want them to find those weaknesses. This initial round of audits will be the first of four major steps in certification. In February and March ,we will have the second Pre-Assessment Audit and Readiness Review, which along with the Certification Audit, will be done by our contracted Registrar. During the Readiness Review and Certification Audit, mistakes count. We need our vulnerabilities found now, so we have time to correct them, and make our team stronger. Join us and let our team show this nation and this industry that HMMA holds the key to be a benchmark. That here in Alabama, quality is our first objective. Through your hard work, teamwork and initiative, we will strive to be a leader in the auto industry. We will be awarded ISO/TS 16949:2002 certification in 2006. HMMA Quality Department Hyundai Models Top Crash Tests Korean maker's Sonata and Tucson, score well in passenger protection. By Ken Thomas / Associated Press V ehicles made by Hyundai Motor Co., Honda Motor Co., DaimlerChrysler AG and Subaru of America Inc. earned top honors in new crash tests of sport utility vehicles, minivans and sedans. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave five stars Monday in front and side-impact protection to the Hyundai Sonata sedan and Tucson SUV, Honda Odyssey minivan, Mercedes-Benz ML Class SUV and Subaru B9 Tribeca SUV. The Pontiac G6 two-door coupe received the top score in rollover protection, with the government estimating a 9 percent chance of vehicle rollover during a crash. The Mitsubishi Lancer, meanwhile, fared worst in side-impact protection among the vehicles; the four-door version was the only model to get two stars on side-impact protection for the driver. The score was based on previous testing and denotes a 21 to 25 percent chance of serious injury in a real-world crash. Dan Irvin, a Mitsubishi spokesman, noted that it was an old test and said that side curtain air bags will become standard equipment on the vehicle in the 2007 model year. The Lancer received top scores in frontal protection. NHTSA typically conducts new tests on vehicles when they are redesigned. The majority of vehicles reviewed received either four or five stars in frontal- and side-impact protection. In addition to the vehicles that earned five stars on both tests, other top-performing vehicles included the 2006 Volkswagen Passat, Chevrolet Impala, Dodge Dakota, Nissan Armada and Ford Freestar. For frontal tests, five stars means there is a 10 percent or less chance of serious injury and four stars estimates an 11 percent to 20 percent chance of serious injury. NHTSA conducts the frontimpact test at 35 mph. 3 Show Your Team Spirit Shop ‘Til You Drop On Friday, November 18, Team Members displayed their team spirit by wearing the jersey of their favorite sports team.
