Top 10 Reasons to Visit Maui Surfing Windsurfing Wakeboarding Jetskiing 1. THE SUN: The climate of Hawaii is ideal every day of the year -- it’s summer in Hawaii all winter long! Maui’s beaches are usually sunny because two high mountains shield its west and south coasts from the numerous winter storms that come from the northeast, resulting in perfect weather in the beach areas of Kaanapali and Wailea. Kite Surfing 2. WHALE WATCHING: Humpback whales in winter congregate in the sheltered waters between the Hawaiian islands of Maui and Lanai and Molokai, making Maui best for whale watching. If you have never been whale watching, do NOT miss the opportunity to do so! 3. THE SURF: Name any imaginable ocean-related activity, and it’s available on Maui. You can swim, surf, scuba dive, sail, paddle, hang glide, fish, and watch whales. Or simply sun bathe. 4. THE FOOD: There are wide variety of eating options on Maui, ranging from fine dining to local hangouts. And because of the diverse ethnicity of Maui residents, there are equally diverse cuisine styles. Lahaina and Kannapali brach offer many options! 5. THE BEACH: Maui is blessed with plenty of white sand beaches, many protected from heavy surf by coral reefs. 6. RAINBOWS: Rainbows are frequent, as it is often sunny on the beaches, but raining lightly on the mountainsides, producing glorious rainbows. So in areas bordering the rainforest you might see some rain. Makes for good rainbows! As the saying goes in Maui, ‘No rain, no rainbows’. 7. THE ROAD TO HANA: Plan to make this windy trip an all-day type of affair. The winding road to Hana with 600 curves passes through the green tropical rainforest covering the east side of Haleakala mountain on Maui, past many streams rushing over waterfalls, with spectacular views from cliffs high above the ocean. 8. THE CRATER: The idea is to be at the crater for the rising of the sun. On clear days, the views are spectacular. And be sure to dress warmly. It gets cold at the summit. Some folks combine the pre-dawn sojourn up Haleakala with a picturesque bike ride down from the crater. 9. MOLOKINI: Although diving is available throughout the island, a boat trip out of Maalaea to Molokini allows you to visit the crescent shaped atoll that attracts an impressive and colorful array of sea life. 10. THE VALLEY: Although literally minutes away from the county seat of Wailuku, the short drive into Iao Valley is a trip into Maui’s past. It was here that one of the greatest battles in King Kamehameha’s consolidation of power was staged, with — as legend has it — the river running red with blood. Along the way, pay a visit to the culture center. Play in the stream. Hike the trails. Whalers Village is in walking distance from the Hyatt Regency. Here you can dine, shop, take hula lessons, and more! You can also go to Lahaina for even more options - just a short cab ride away!
