CHICK-FIL-A KICKOFF GAME NUGGETS
Who We Are
Created in 2008, the annual Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game matches two top 25 teams in a neutral site, bowl
game atmosphere at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome to open the college football season. As the nation’s
longest-running kickoff game and innovator of the new era of neutral-site season openers, the
Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game has paved the way for blockbuster games on opening weekend.
Competition
Since its inception, the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game has attracted teams with national rankings of No. 1,
No. 2, No 5 (twice), No. 6, No. 7, No. 9, No. 14, No. 16, No. 18 (twice), No. 19, No. 24 (twice) and No.
25 (twice). The 2015 AP National Coach of the Year (Dabo Swinney), 2015 Heisman Trophy Winner
(Derrick Henry) and six of the 31 2016 NFL first round draft picks all once took the field to kick off the
college football season in Atlanta.
Attendance and Payouts
The Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game boasts an average attendance of more than 66,800, higher than the
attendance of 33 bowl games in 2015. The average total payout of $4.7 million has been distributed to
the two competing schools, which ranks higher than 26 bowl games in 2015.
The Matchup
Meeting for the 31st time, but first since 1971, Georgia and North Carolina give us the 8th SEC vs. ACC
matchup in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game’s nine-year history. Both teams will be making their second
appearance in the event as North Carolina lost its 2010 matchup with LSU and Georgia fell to Boise
State a year later. Georgia leads the all-time series 16-12-2.

KICKOFF GAME INFORMATION 2
COLLEGE FOOTBALL’S NEWEST TRADITION
Each year, the best in college football open the season in Atlanta. At stake? The Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game’s
coveted Old Leather Helmet Trophy. An icon of toughness and courage, it represents the origins of college
football rivalries, and is worn only by the winner of the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.
Regular season “trophy games” are an integral tradition in college football: From Paul Bunyan’s Axe, to
the Golden Hat, to the Victory Bell, and the Seminole War Canoe, college football is filled with emblems of
big-game rivalries.
In 2008, the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game added The Old Leather Helmet to the mix, starting its own tradition.
The difference is … playing for The Old Leather Helmet is by invitation only.
As the tradition of The Old Leather Helmet has grown, it has come to include the winners of the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game wearing
the highly coveted trophy. Following the game, coaches and players from the winning team take turns wearing The Old Leather
Helmet on the field and during the trophy presentation.
The battle for The Old Leather Helmet has served as a showcase for the brightest stars in college football since 2008, with a list of
alumni that includes 42 NFL first-round draft picks, six National Coaches of the Year and 15 players who have earned National
Player of the Year awards.
Once again, college football’s elite programs have come to Atlanta to stake their claim to The Old Leather Helmet. Today’s game
features the Georgia Bulldogs and the North Carolina Tar Heels, two storied rivals meeting for the 31st time in their programs’
histories, but marks their first since 1971. Both schools will be looking to not only add a strong neutral site win to their resumes,
but also a Chick-fil-A Kickoff game victory to jump start their 2016 seasons and a possible run at the College Football Playoff.

The 2016 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game will be telecast by ESPN. Local television affiliates are permitted to record game action from the sidelines and
air up to two (2) minutes of highlights during the following 48-hour period.
Live shots will NOT be permitted from the field or stands during the game. Live shots prior to the game must be concluded before ESPN begins its
telecast, and post-game live shots may not begin until ESPN has concluded the telecast.
Field Access
All credentialed media (press box, field photo, TV anchor) will have pregame access to the sidelines until the pregame clock
hits “30:00.” Electronic news gathering (ENG) crews will be permitted to produce “live shots” in designated areas on the playing field during that same window.
Coin Toss
The coin toss will be restricted to a ESPN photographer and the official Kickoff Game pool photographer, Paul Abell.
Post Game Interview Procedures
Following a 10-minute cooling off period after the game, the Bowl will host a press conference with the losing team’s head coach in
the Field Level Media Suite near Gate E. The winning team’s head coach will be available immediately following the first session.
Player participation in the postgame press conference is at the discretion of each team.
Players from both teams will be available in designated areas outside the locker rooms, at the discretion of the teams.
Coaches and players are obligated first to the credentialed media covering the game before making themselves available to single
outlets and must report to the interview area immediately following the cooling off period.
Audio and video of the post-game press conferences will be shown in the press box and quotes and full transcripts will be distributed in the Press Box, Field Level Media Suite, and via email to all credentialed media.
NOTE: The main press box elevator will be shut down with 2:00 remaining in the game to allow coaches to get down from the
coaches booth. Alternate elevators are available to the media and you will be directed to them by Bowl staff if you are trying to get
to the field level during that time.

GEORGIA BULLDOGS COACHING STAFF
KIRBY SMART – HEAD COACH
On Dec. 6, 2015, former Bulldog player and assistant coach and current University of Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby
Smart was named the University of Georgia head football coach. He juggled two jobs for a month until January 11, 2016,
when the Crimson Tide won its fourth national championship in a seven-year span. Twelve hours later, he was in Athens
ready to go to work.
Smart served on the Alabama staff the past nine years, the past seven as defensive coordinator. During his tenure at
Alabama, the Crimson Tide won three BCS National Championships, one College Football Playoff national title, three
Southeastern Conference crowns, six SEC western division titles and was ranked in the nation’s final top ten rankings the last
eight years in a row.
A former standout defensive back and scholar-athlete at Georgia, Smart was one of the nation’s most respected defensive coordinators. During his time
at Alabama, he coached players at three different positions, in addition to his coordinating duties. He was recognized as the 2012 AFCA Assistant Coach
of the Year and the 2009 Broyles Award winner as college football’s top assistant coach. He was also a finalist for the 2015 Broyles Award.
Prior to joining the Alabama staff in 2007, Smart spent the 2006 season as safeties coach with the NFL’s Miami Dolphins. He served six years on the
collegiate level as the running backs coach at Georgia (2005), defensive backs coach at LSU (2004), graduate assistant at Florida State (2002-03),
defensive coordinator/linebackers coach (2001) and defensive backs coach (2000) at Valdosta State, as well as administrative assistant at UGA (1999).
The Bainbridge, Ga., native is married to the former Mary Beth Lycett of McDonough. They are now the proud parents of twins Weston and Julia (8) and
son Andrew (4).

NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS COACHING STAFF
LARRY FEDORA– HEAD COACH
Larry Fedora’s fourth season as North Carolina’s head coach saw the Tar Heels return to the national discussion thanks to a
record-setting offense and vastly improved defense. After an 11-3 season that featured a school-record 11-game winning
streak and the program’s first trip to the ACC Championship Game, Fedora has the Tar Heels poised to compete for a league
title on a yearly basis.
Carolina had one of its best seasons in nearly two decades in 2015 as Fedora guided the Tar Heels to an 11-1 regular season
and the school’s first appearance the ACC Championship Game. His team set school marks for most points (570), points per
game (40.7) and touchdowns (73). Fedora was named the 2015 Fellowship of Christian Athletes Coach of the Year and was
a finalist for the Bear Bryant National Coach of the Year Award.
Fedora came to Carolina after four seasons as head coach at Southern Miss where he compiled a 34-19 overall record,
including a 12-2 mark in 2012, and advanced to four consecutive bowl games.
Fedora began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Austin College in 1986. He then served as an assistant coach at Garland (Texas) High School
from 1987-90. Fedora returned to the collegiate ranks in 1991, serving as the tight ends, wide receivers and running backs coach at Baylor, where he
stayed until 1996. He then spent two seasons (1997-98) at Air Force coaching the passing game and wide receivers. He spent three seasons as the
offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State from 2005-07. Prior to his stint at Oklahoma State, Fedora spent three seasons at Florida as run game
coordinator (2002), perimeter game coordinator (2003) and offensive coordinator (2004). He also coached the running backs and receivers all three
seasons. Before going to Florida, Fedora was the offensive coordinator at Middle Tennessee from 1999-2001.
Fedora is married to the former Christi Wood, and the couple has one son, Dillon, and three daughters, Sydney, Peyton and Hallie.

Alabama 34 - Clemson 10
Alabama 34 - Virginia Tech 24
Led by a stingy defense and a potent running attack, No. 24 Alabama
routed No. 9 Clemson 34-10 in the inaugural Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.
The Tigers vaunted backfield tandem of James Davis and C.J. Spiller
could only manage 20 yards on eight carries, while the Crimson Tide
duo of Mark Ingram and Glen Coffee combined for 186 yards on 34
rushes. Bama jumped out to a 23-3 lead at halftime behind three Leigh
Tiffin field goals, a 1-yard touchdown run by QB John Parker Wilson,
and a 4-yard touchdown pass from Wilson to Nick Walker. The Tigers
showed signs of life to open the 2nd half, as Spiller took the opening
kickoff 96 yards to cut the margin to 23-10, but that would prove to be
the final points Clemson could muster against a dominant Tide defense.
Freshman sensation Julio Jones caught his first career touchdown late
in the third quarter to put Alabama on top 31-10, and Tiffin would add
a field goal in the 4th for the final margin. For the game, Alabama outrushed the Tigers 239-0 and racked up 25 first downs compared to
Clemson's 11.
The second-annual Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game served as the launching
point for a historic season for one of college football's most storied
programs. Alabama RB Mark Ingram kicked off his Heisman Trophy winning campaign with 150 rushing yards and two touchdowns to lead No.
5 Alabama to a 34-24 win over No. 7 Virginia Tech in front of a sell-out
crowd of 74,954. The season-opening win would also catapult the Crimson Tide towards a 14-0 record and an eventual BCS National Championship. However, it was Virginia Tech that held a 17-16 lead at halftime
on the strength of a 98-yard kickoff return from Dyrell Roberts and a 1yard plunge by RB Ryan Williams. Following a scoreless third quarter,
Alabama took the lead with 12:23 to play in the game on Ingram's first
score, a 6-yard touchdown run that was punctuated by a two-point
conversion on a pass from QB Greg McElroy to Colin Peek. The Crimson
Tide would stretch the lead to 27-17 just moments later on Leigh Kiffin's
fourth field goal of the game. Tech's Ryan Williams brought the Hokies
to within three points with a dazzling 32-yard touchdown run with 9:22
to play, but Ingram would put the game out of reach with an 18-yard
touchdown score on a pass from McElroy to seal the victory.

LSU 30 - North Carolina 24
No. 16 LSU held off a furious 4th quarter rally from a short-handed No. 18 ranked UNC squad to win the third-annual Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in
perhaps the most thrilling installment of the game to date. The Tigers, led by All-American Patrick Peterson appeared to have the game well in
hand in the second quarter, as Peterson scored on an 87-yard punt return to extend the lead to 23-10 with just 4:01 left in the half. One minute
later, the Tigers struck again as QB Jordan Jefferson found Reuben Randle for a 51-yard score to push the margin to 30-10 at the break. However,
it was the Tar Heels who seized the momentum in the 2nd half. Playing without 13 players due to an NCAA investigation, UNC cut the deficit to
30-17 when QB T.J. Yates found a wide-open Jehranie Boyd behind the LSU secondary for a Kickoff Game record 97-yard touchdown with 10:34
left in the 4th quarter. After another touchdown strike from Yates to Erik Highsmith cut the lead to 30-24, the Heels would recover an onside kick
with 2:31 to play in the game. Following a Yates fumble on 4th down, the Tigers looked ready to put the game away, but RB Stevan Ridley fumbled with 1:08 left in the game to give UNC one last chance. Carolina would drive inside the LSU 10-yard line, but a potential game-tying touchdown pass from Yates went through the hands of TE Zach Piannalto as time expired.

Boise State 35 - Georgia 21
Boise State’s Kellen Moore went 28-34 for 261 yards and three touchdowns to lead the No. 5 Broncos to a 35-21 win over No. 19 Georgia. After a
sluggish start to the game offensively for both teams, UGA opened up the playbook with a reverse for CB Brandon Boykin who outraced the
Bronco defense for an 80-yard touchdown run to put the Bulldogs up 7-0. From there, Boise State would seize control of the game and would not
let up. Moore led the Broncos down the field with a six play, 58-yard drive that culminated with a 17-yard touchdown strike to freshman Matt
Miller to knot the game at 7 apiece. The Broncos would take advantage of an Aaron Murray interception as Moore connected with tight end Kyle
Efaw for a 12-yard touchdown to give Boise a 14-7 lead at the intermission. Moore would open the second half with a vintage drive, connecting
on all seven passes he attempted for 69 yards. Running back Doug Martin would cap the drive with a seven-yard touchdown run. Boise put the
game away late in the third quarter on Moore’s third touchdown pass of the night, a three-yard toss to Tyler Shoemaker. Georgia would tack on
two touchdowns late in the game, but never mounted a serious threat to the Broncos.

Tennessee 35 - N.C. State 21
Clemson 26 - Auburn 19
The Friday night game in the first-ever Chick-fil-A Kickoff game
doubleheader featured a pair of teams in No. 25 NC State and
Tennessee who had not faced off since 1963. Tennessee got off to a hot
start as the Volunteers scored 22 points in the first quarter. Quarterback
Tyler Bray connected with Cordarrelle Patterson on a 41-yard
touchdown pass during the Volunteers second drive of the game.
Patterson also had a big night on the ground as he added a 67-yard
touchdown run to the Volunteers’ high-scoring first quarter. NC State’s
James Washington closed the Wolfpacks’ halftime to deficit to 22-14
with a three-yard touchdown run. However, Tennessee picked up right
where they left off as Rajion Neal completed a nearly 7-minute
Volunteers drive with an 8-yard touchdown run. A 20-yard field goal by
Michael Palardy pushed the lead to 32-14 to end the third quarter. NC
State fought back with a quick 5-yard touchdown pass from Mike
Glennon to Bryan Underwood but would not score again. Palardy’s
second field goal of the night, this time a 35-yard kick, capped off the
win for the Volunteers.
The double-header weekend continued on Saturday in front of a Kickoff
game record 75,211 fans between No. 24 Auburn and No. 14 Clemson.
Chandler Catanzaro put Clemson on the board with a 24-yard field goal,
but Auburn quickly responded with Kiehl Frazier’s 54-yard touchdown
pass to Emory Blake, scoring the team’s only touchdown of the game.
After adding on another field goal in the second quarter, Clemson regained the lead on a 7-yard touchdown run by Roderick McDowell.
After his 37-yard field goal closed the gap to 13-10 at the half, Auburn’s
Cody Parkey tied the game with a 46-yard kick on the team’s second
drive of the third quarter. Both teams traded field goals to head into
the fourth quarter tied 16-16. Parkey added on his fourth field goal of
the day on a 36-yard kick to give Auburn its first lead since the first
quarter. However, Clemson then scored ten unanswered points on Tajh
Boyd’s 4-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Hopkins and Catanzaro’s
fourth field goal of the day. Down 26-19 with 1:24 left in the game,
Auburn had one last chance to score but two sacks proved costly as the
drive stalled, sealing the victory for Clemson.

Ole Miss 35 - Boise State 13
The 2013 Chick-fil-A Kickoff game marked the second meeting of the
No. 1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide and the Virginia Tech Hokies in
Atlanta. Alabama struck first when Christion Jones scored on a 72-yard
punt return. With less than two minutes to go in the first quarter Alabama’s T.J. Yeldon jammed in the two-yard touchdown run to give the
Crimson Tide a 14-0 advantage. Virginia Tech’s Trey Edmunds responded 26 seconds later with 77-yard touchdown to cut Alabama’s lead in
half. Alabama’s defense and special teams continued to be spectacular
in the second quarter. Vinnie Sunseri scored on a 38 yard interception
in the first 56 seconds of the quarter. Virginia Tech’s Cody Journell put
three more points on the board with a 39-yard field goal. On the Virginia Tech kickoff, Alabama’s Jones earned his second touchdown with a
94-yard kickoff return to put Alabama on top 28-10 going into the half.
Alabama tacked on seven more points when A.J. McCarron connected
with Jones for a 38-yard touchdown. Jones scored three of Alabama’s
five touchdowns. Despite the Hokies’ attempts to stage a comeback,
Alabama earned a 35-10 win. Alabama is 3-0 in Chick-fil-A Kickoff games
and 2-0 against the Hokies.

In the first game of the 2014 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game double-header, it
took No. 18 Ole Miss three quarters to get rolling on their way to a 3513 victory over Boise State. The Rebels erupted for 28 fourth-quarter
points as they were led by senior quarterback Bo Wallace who threw
for 387 yards and four touchdowns. Ole Miss struck first in the opening
quarter as Wallace found Cody Core for a 30-yard score. Over the next
two quarters, two field goals by Boise’s Dan Goodale of 25 and 43
yards was all the scoring that took place as the Broncos trailed 7-6
heading into the last 15 minutes. A little over two minutes into the
fourth-quarter, Wallace hit Laquon Treadwell from 14 yards out to
extend the Rebels lead to 14-6. The next four minutes provided more
fireworks as Wallace found Quincy Adeboyejo and Cody Core, for the
second time, for 31 and 76 yard touchdown scores, respectively. An 8yard pass from Grant Hedrick to running back Jay Ajayi cut the lead to
28-13 with four minutes left before a 19-yard scamper by Ole Miss
running back Mark Dodson stopped any threat of a Boise State comeback.

Alabama 33 - West Virginia 23
The No. 2 ranked Crimson Tide stretched their record in Kickoff Games to 4-0 as they defeated West Virginia 33-23. Coming in as 26 point underdogs, the Mountaineers provided a much stiffer test than the country expected, led by quarterback Clint Trickett’s 365 yards passing. Both teams
traded field goals in the first quarter before Alabama’s T.J. Yeldon found the end-zone from 15 yards out to cap off a 95-yard drive. The Mountaineers responded as Trickett found Kevin White for a 19-yard touchdown. Another Yeldon touchdown run was immediately answered by a 100yard Mario Alford kickoff return for a touchdown and the score was knotted once again at 17. The second-half began with a 19-yard Derrick Henry touchdown run as Alabama extended the lead to double-digits. After that, both teams traded four field-goals throughout the rest of the contest .

Auburn 31 - Louisville 24
Georgia vs. North Carolina
No. 6 Auburn evened up its Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game record with a 31-24
win over No. 25 Louisville, who was making its first appearance in the
game. The Tigers’ revamped defense started off the 2015 season the
right way, shutting out the Cardinals in the first half and forcing a pair
of key turnovers as Auburn built a 17-0 lead. An interception set up the
Tigers’ first touchdown of the season, while Justin Garrett picked up a
fumble and took it 82 yards to extend the Auburn lead. Auburn would
go on to score in its first possession of the second half, bringing the
lead to 24. However, quarterback Jeremy Johnson struggled in his Auburn debut and his third interception of the game led to Louisville’s first
touchdown and gave momentum back to the Cardinals. A potent rushing attack led by Brandon Radcliff and quarterback Lamar Jackson kept
Louisville in the game. Despite scoring touchdowns on its final three
possessions, Louisville could not overcome the early deficit and the
Tigers held on for the win. Johnson finished the day with a pair of
touchdowns, one passing and one rushing, while backup running back
Peyton Barber recorded 115 yards on the ground after replacing the
injured Roc Thomas.

GEORGIA DOME FACTS 25
DOME FUN FACTS
For the 9th straight year, the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game will take
place inside the Georgia Dome. Located in the heart of Downtown Atlanta, the Dome has hosted many other NCAA events,
including the SEC Football Championship for the past 22 years, 12
different ACC and SEC men’s basketball tournaments and the
NCAA Men’s Final Four three times, in 2002, 2007 and most recently in 2013.
Structure
• A total of 8,300 tons of reinforced steel was used to construct the
Dome. That is more than the weight of iron and steel used in the
Eiffel Tower.
• A 437-mile sidewalk, from Atlanta to Cincinnati, could be built from
the 110,000 cubic yards of concrete used at the Dome.
• The building covers 8.9 acres and is as tall as a 27-story building.
• The 290-foot high roof is composed of 130 Teflon-coated fiberglass
panels. The roof’s supporting cables total 11.1 miles. The roof spans
615 feet at its widest point and 750 feet at its longest point.
• A pair of C-5 military transport planes could fit on the Georgia
Dome's floor, which contains 102,000 square feet of prime exhibition
space.
Utilities
• Lighting is provided by 798 lighting fixtures in the roof structure.
• It takes 16,400 kilowatts of power to operate the Dome – enough
electricity to light up a city with a population of 13,000.
• The four, 1,250-ton air conditioning units in the Georgia Dome generate enough power to cool 1,666 homes.
• To supply soft drinks to dispensers, thousands of liquid lines wind
through the stadium. These include 32,952 feet of lines (the length of
109 football fields) to feed liquids to hundreds of dispensers throughout the building.
Also the home venue for the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, the Georgia Dome is owned by the state of Georgia and operated by
the Georgia World Congress Center Authority, which also operates the Georgia World Congress Center and Centennial
Olympic Park.
Paired with the adjacent 2.5 million-square-foot World Congress Center and the 21 acre Centennial Park, the three facilities comprise one of the largest sports, entertainment and
convention complexes in the world. The Georgia Dome alone
provides arena and stadium configured seating between
20,000 and 80,000 people. The Dome’s football seating capacity is 71,250, including 196 executive suites and 4,600 club
seats
Records Set At The Dome
• Most Passing Yards in the Super Bowl: In one of two Super Bowls
hosted at the Dome, St. Louis Rams quarterback Kurt Warner threw
for 414 yards in Super Bowl XXXIV on January 30, 2000. The Dome
also hosted Super Bowl XXVIII (Dallas vs. Buffalo, 1994).
• Longest Paper Airplane Flight: The level flight duration record for a
hand-launched paper airplane is 27.6 seconds by Ken Blackburn of St.
Louis, on October 8, 1998.
• Dome’s Largest Hot Dog: Sara Lee made a 1,996-foot wiener for the
1996 Olympics that took over 2,000 buns to hold it.
• Fastest Men’s Indoor 400 Meter Race: Michael Johnson won the
400 meter title in 44.63 seconds at the USA Indoor Track and Field
Championships on March 4, 1995.
