Waltair Club_14th_Issue
My greetings to all the Club members!
Each month, each season gives us reasons to revel in the joy of a festivity, to
come together and celebrate in the bosom of our great Club. Sometimes we
conjure up a reason ourselves. Events, small or big, require hordes of personnel
to work behind the curtains to ensure a glitch-free celebration. The same
holds in the case of events held at our Club. But they need clarity of purpose;
they need to know what they have to do. Let me make myself clear with the
assistance of a few statistics. The event ‘Tollywood Nite’ that was held towards
the end of the last month received 700 registrations prior to the last date of
registration and an astounding 700 registrations on the last day alone, which
was a day before date of the event. Not expecting so many registrations on
the last day, food was ordered only for 800 people. This proved to be a major
organizational hindrance. But who is to be blamed? Certainly, not the
organising committee! Let us accept this episode as a lesson for the future. I
request all the members to kindly register themselves for events prior to the
last date so our memories of the day are not soured.
I also want to use this space to inform the about a party to be held on the New
Year’s Eve. And registrations for this would be closed by the 30th of December.
But don’t wait for the last date to register!
Some new rules that are being enforced from now on are also mentioned in
the following page.
Regards.

It was a 'nite' to that would surely go down
as one of the most memorable in the
history of this Club. While fireworks
illuminated the sky, the vivacious Parvati
Melton and the lively Vimala Raman lit
up the lawns of Waltair Club. Truly, a 'nite'
to remember!
decorating a ‘puja thali’, writing Hare Krishna 108
times, deciphering a jigsaw puzzle, matching
religions/organizations/faiths with their founders
and finally a cross word puzzle of world famous
monuments and the countries in which they are
located.
The entire rally took about 2 hours and the most
heartening aspect of this year’s rally was that
ALL cars that registered returned back to the
starting point.
The UNITY IN DIVERSITY car rally for Waltair Club
members was organized by the Ladies Sub-Committee
on 18 th September 2011. The event had a very
encouraging response with total of 30 cars participating
in it. The event began with a word building game using
the letters in the phrase “UNITY IN DIVERSITY” while
registration was going on. Each team was given snacks,
soft drinks and water bottles.
The first car was flagged off by the President of Waltair
Club and the second car by the Honorary Secretary. Soon
all 30 cars were flagged off and the rally was off to a roaring
start.
All cars were to follow one of four routes charted out by
the organizers. A total of six points were designated along
the route for participants to stop, complete activities there
and earn points to win the rally. In keeping with the rich
and varied religious diversity of our country, the six stops
were a Gurudwara, a Temple, a Mosque, a Buddhist site,
an ISKCON temple and a Church. Activities to be
completed ranged from making a flower garland,
For the first time in the history of Waltair Club car
rallies, two judges were requested to compile the
points earned by the participants at each point
along the rally route and announce the winners
after totaling the points. The two judges who took
out their time and the worked through the tedious
compilation were Mrs. Ammaji Rayudu and Mrs.
Usha Monish Rao. While the points were being
tallied, checked and re-checked, all participating
cars were presented a Reebok watch, a mini-gym
bag and a cap all worth about Rs 4000. Huge
thanks to the event sponsor Mr. Shekhar of M/s
Michelin Pit Stop who sponsored all the
participation gifts, the cash prizes and all other gifts.
The first prize of Rs. 7,000/- was bagged by Mr. P.
Krishnakant, Mrs. Rajiji Chitra, Mr. Shaad Mehdi
and Dr. Sailesh Atmakuri. The second Prize of Rs.
5,000 was won by Mr. Atmakuri Ravi Kumar and
his family. The third prize was won by an all-ladies
team of Mrs. Vani Kancharla, Mrs. Jaya Narasimha
Rao, Dr. Sugandhi Atmakuri and Mrs. Radhika
Bodepudi. Looked like a very lucky day for the
Atmakuri family since every prize winning car had
someone from the Atmakuri family. A lucky
coincidence for them! The best decorated car along
with the best dressed team was won by Mr. Shabbir
Ekhlas and family for depicting the theme to
perfection. Two consolation prizes were also given.
Congratulations to the Ladies Committee for a
wonderful event that was meticulously planned and
perfectly executed.
It is difficult to say goodbye to good people…especially when they have been true friends and
icons to the world. The time has now come for us to say adieu to Shobha Prasad whose untimely
death a few days ago is a reminder to all of us about the vagaries of time and the shortness of life.
In the passing away of Shobha, we mourn the silence that is left behind after the mega celebration
of life…like the silence that comes after a catastrophic tsunami…like the quietness that befalls
Earth after the wild storm has passed. Her sonorous voice calling out the numbers at Tambola and
her impeccable command over the English language will always come first to our mind when we
remember this great soul.
The word “Shobha” means “brilliance” in Sanskrit. Truly, our friend Shobha Prasad was the epitome
of brilliance and her radiance permeated our lives and every corner of the Waltair Club. In her own sweet, soft way she was
the chosen leader and a unanimous member of every Ladies Sub-Committee…and a valuable player at that. Shobha
would be just a call away for every creative activity and her intelligence and dedicated help made her the true pillar of many
successful events in the club.
Shobha was the combination of many wonderful personalities. She was the perfect host to many a party, the smiling
guardian to youngsters who were inspired by her dignity and grace, the loving mother who rocked the cradle of one of the
finest cricketers the state of Andhra Pradesh has ever seen, the gracious wife of one of the most legendary sportsmen, the
golden voice of many events , the energetic teacher to many a baby in her crèche, the intelligent friend to kitty group ladies,
the talented cook who could turn out the best Andhra cuisine dishes and the typical Andhra daughter who brought pride and
glow to women around her.
The story of life is very strange and God’s will and verses of destiny will always amuse me. I always wonder at the irony of
the cycle of life and death and reminiscence at the drama of the whole act. The exit of Shobha marks the end of an era of
excellence and the Waltair Club will always miss her motherly touch and finess at many occasions. For the women of the
club…..we have lost a dignified sister and a beacon of light which had guided us on our journey in the past. We will always
miss her warm smile and reassuring words and whenever the world talks of eminent women…Shobha Prasad will be
remembered with great respect.
May her soul rest in peace and the club members and committee pray that God gives her son Kinnu the strength to bear with
the loss of such a positive aura in his home.

A Squish Branch
I hold a tree branch,
My grip is very tight,
A dark green squishy branch it is,
A caterpillar’s plight.
I examine the goo on my hands,
In my head I think, “Dear me!”
I have crushed the dreams,
Of a butterfly-to-be,
I wash my hands with sorrow,
The slime washes away,
I watch the green get sucked into the drain,
This is not a fixable mistake.
I’m sorry, caterpillar.

THE COCHIN SUBURBAN CLUB
The Cochin Suburban Club located at Ernakulam was established in the
year 1979 as a small time club in an unused house but with prominent
personalities as members. Activities, though, began only in 1981 when the
first committee took charge. With time, the club expanded and started offering
better facilities to its members. The club got a huge makeover under its President
Madhavan Nair who introduced swimming pools and several other facilities
turning it into a club that could be compared with several esteemed clubs in
the state of Kerala. Over the years, the Cochin Suburban Club has grown into
a respected club with facilities like a restaurant whose tandoori food is a hot
favourite, space for all major indoor and outdoor sports like badminton, tennis,
and billiards apart from a grass topped play area for children, a library, two
party spaces with the ability to accommodate 300 people each and a fullfledged conference room. The club’s Ayurvedic Centre though, is one aspect
that sets it apart from other clubs. Something that is unique about the club is the fact that it arms both husband
and wife in a family with voting rights. The Cochin Suburban Club, apart from its latest affiliation with the Waltair
Club, has affiliations with major clubs in India as well as countries like France, Australia and Kenya.
1982 is one of the leading clubs of the state, The
Cosmopolitan Club. The Club started modestly with
around 150 in a rented building but in a period of three
years acquired land and shifted to its building. The Club
has now expanded to about 800 with the most prominent
persons of the city being its members. The Club boasts of
a number of facilities which include arenas for both indoor
and outdoor games. The most attractive among these
would be the Tennis Courts with synthetic turfs. The facility
has been applauded by players of international stature
like Ramesh Krishnan. It also houses tables for snooker
and table tennis. The swimming pool at the Club took
about a year to complete which in itself provides an insight to the amount of effort put in to build the facility. Apart from these, the Club
also has air-conditioned rooms for its members and members of associated Clubs in addition to a restaurant Punjabi and Chinese
cuisine along with the local food.
