FEBRUARY 2008 WORLD JOURNEY OF SMILES AT-A-GLANCE • 40 mission sites in 25 countries in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Asia Twenty-five years after Operation Smile was founded, WJOS began in the Philippines, in the same hospital where Co-founders Dr. Bill and Kathy Magee led the first mission team after fund-raising for the costs in Operation Smile’s hometown of Norfolk, Va. On November 7, in Naga City at Bicol Medical Center, Dr. Magee performed the first surgery of WJOS. More countries began their medical missions and soon, 40 sites were simultaneously providing free treatment. Dignitaries, Operation Smile corporate supporters and celebrities visited some of these sites. These guests and Operation Smile’s volunteers all came together with a shared passion for helping children. • 7,414 children received free physical examinations MARC ASCHER • November 7-16, 2007 Operation Smile’s year-long 25th Anniversary celebration culminated in November with the World Journey of Smiles (WJOS), 40 simultaneous missions in 25 countries. WJOS took place November 7-16, and was the largest simultaneous medical mission of its kind. Free physical examinations were provided to 7,414 patients; 4,086 children born with cleft lips and cleft palates were provided free surgical treatment. The initiative mobilized more than 1,700 volunteers from 44 countries – more than 700 volunteers were from the United States and more than 1,000 volunteers were from 43 other countries. These volunteers worked together in 40 hospitals, care centers and clinics in 25 countries in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Asia. • More than 1,700 volunteers - 700 from the United States - 1,000 from 43 other countries WWW.STUDIO404PHOTOGRAPHY.COM n o l Editi Specia World Journey of Smiles Treats More Than 4,000 Children Worldwide Nguyen Thi Thao and her mother, one day after Operation Smile medical volunteers repaired the little girl’s cleft lip during the medical mission in Hue, Vietnam • 4,086 children received free reconstructive surgery • 38 high school student volunteers from the U.S., Paraguay and Ireland • Included a DNA research project to help determine the possible cause of cleft lip and cleft palate (from left) Resident Dr. Sharon Clancy of the University of Southern California, Dr. Richard Rosenblum of Virginia, and Dr. Bill Magee in the operating room during World Journey of Smiles in Naga City, Philippines OPERATION SMILE |1 JOHNNY BIVERA Message from our Co-founders Last year was a very busy and rewarding time for Operation Smile as we celebrated 25 years of helping thousands of children around the world. During our 2007 fiscal year ending June 30, Operation Smile medical volunteers treated more than 9,000 children. More than 6,000 of these patients were helped through local, in-country medical teams. During a briefing on Capitol Hill (from left) Operation Smile Chief Medical Officer Dr. Randy Sherman, Operation Smile President and Co-founder Kathy Magee, former patient Chadleen Lacdo-o from the Philippines, Operation Smile Board of Directors Chairman Howard Unger and Operation Smile CEO and Co-founder Dr. Bill Magee During the 25th Anniversary, we conducted the World Journey of Smiles (WJOS), mobilizing more than 1,700 of our volunteers to treat children in 40 sites in 25 countries. It was the world’s largest medical mission of its kind and was a reflection of Operation Smile’s experience and infrastructure capacity. We thank every single volunteer for making this a very special moment for the organization. None of us would be able to do this as individuals; it is only the collective use of our talents and resources that allowed something as significant as WJOS to occur. We had the opportunity to travel to eight of the countries during WJOS and felt the excitement from everyone, recognizing that they were part of something bigger than just their own mission assignment. It was really the global effort of people from so many different nations with so many talents that created a message of hope for the children of our world. The experience has energized us and we know that we are ready for the next 25 years. In 2007, we also opened Comprehensive Care Centers in Colombia, Vietnam, China and Honduras, and are in the final planning stages of more centers in Vietnam, Brazil, Paraguay, the Philippines, India, Morocco and a number of other countries. Our Comprehensive Care Center in Hangzhou, China, opened its doors during WJOS; we believe that as many 5,000 children a year will be treated through this center alone with year-round surgical treatment and post-operative follow-up care to include dental treatment and speech counseling. Our future plans will require the augmented resources of our mission-based model enhanced by year round, day-in, day-out care provided by our Comprehensive Care Centers. These specialized facilities are equipped to offer follow-up, post-operative multidisciplinary care and counseling to patients in the areas of dental, speech therapy, nutrition, psychosocial, and genetics. With all of these initiatives ahead of us, the opportunities for our volunteers will be greater than ever. Together, we have accomplished so much in the past 25 years and have seen many changes. To date, more than 115,000 children around the world have been treated by Operation Smile volunteers. We thank the volunteers, donors and staff who have made this possible and ask that you help us to take care of the thousands who are still waiting. - Bill and Kathy Magee Throughout the world, Operation Smile volunteers repair childhood facial deformities while building public and private partnerships that advocate for sustainable healthcare systems for children and families. Together, we create smiles, change lives, heal humanity. 6435 Tidewater Drive Norfolk, Virginia 23509 Tel: 757.321.SMILE (7645) Fax: 757.321.7660 Check out our website: www.operationsmile.org Editors: Lisa Jones Leila Hemaidan Lisa Jardanhazy Katherine Taylor OPERATION SMILE IS A UNITED NATIONS AFFILIATED ORGANIZATION 2 | OPERATION SMILE New World Headquarters Announced On October 4, Operation Smile announced plans to construct its World Headquarters in Virginia Beach, Va., adjacent to the Virginia Beach campus of Tidewater Community College in Princess Anne Commons. Virginia Beach will be proud to have such a visionary organization in our city.” The building will include classrooms and other spaces for research and the training and hosting of visiting medical professionals, international business leaders, diplomats and students. COURTESY OF CLARK NEXSEN MISSION STATEMENT In Washington, D.C., on December 6, Senators Mary Landrieu (D-LA) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT) hosted a briefing on Capitol Hill to highlight the organization’s recently completed World Journey of Smiles and the significant public-private partnerships that make the organization’s humanitarian work possible. In addition to comments from Senators Landrieu and Hatch, speakers included Congressman Trent Franks (R-AZ); Nils Kastberg, Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF); Rear Admiral Jim Stevenson, Commander of U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command; Donald Trump Jr., Smile Ambassador; and Katherine Pickus, Abbott Fund Vice President. Henrietta Holsman Fore, Administrator, U.S. Agency for International Development and Director of U.S. Foreign Assistance, spoke and awarded Dr. Bill and Kathy Magee with the “President’s Call to Service Award,” presented to recognize individuals who complete 4,000 or more hours of volunteer service over the course of their lifetime. To close the program, former patient Chadleen Lacdo-o, a 12-year-old from Cebu in the Philippines, sang “The Journey.” Chadleen, who received surgery to repair her cleft palate in 1999, thanked Dr. Bill and Kathy Magee for allowing her the opportunity to pursue her dream of becoming a singer. His Excellency Wen Zhong Zhou OPERATION SMILE |3 IRENE GRAHAM Message from our Chief Medical Officer We did it! Who could have ever imagined two years ago that the day would come when we were standing on the other side of the World Journey of Smiles (WJOS)? It was a remarkable experience in so many ways for so many people, but none greater than the nearly 4,100 children who received life-changing surgery. Accordingly, our volunteers will forever receive our unending gratitude. We hold them in the very highest regard and should constantly sing their praises. It is thanks to them and the organizational staff working together that made this global endeavor a success. In the year leading up to WJOS, Operation Smile provided more than 42,000 hours of specialized training to more than 3,400 medical professionals in our partner countries. The Physicians’ Training Program brought 67 medical professionals from 25 countries to the U.S. for graduate educational programs. Thirty-nine biomedical technicians from 19 countries participated in our Biomedical Technician Training Programs to learn how to safely operate and maintain relevant medical equipment at the highest standards. Critical Nursing Skills Training Programs were conducted in all our partner countries to teach the vital skills necessary for treating cleft lip and cleft palate patients. More Dr. Randy Sherman than 1,000 nurses from 20 countries received this specialized training, another step towards implementing our Global Standards of Care during all medical missions. Our medical volunteers continue to be credentialed in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) training; Operation Smile trained nearly 2,000 medical professionals in 19 countries in preparation for WJOS. Twenty-five Regan Fellows, chosen from plastic surgical residency programs in the U.S. and abroad joined in this Herculean effort to help introduce our amazing new research enterprise in cleft genetics. Coordinating the numerous resident participants for this project was a most challenging task in itself. DNA samples from 3,014 patients were collected in 15 sites in 11 countries. Instituted by our partners at Yale and working with several universities, the samples will be analyzed and screened with the hope of identifying the genetic markers that differentiate the population of people with cleft lip and cleft palate with the hope of finding a causal link. Our Regional Vice Presidents (RVPs) and newly appointed Regional Medical Officers (RMOs) took on vast new leadership responsibilities as we moved more and more decision making responsibilities out to the front lines. From bottom to top, inside out and upside down, we have every reason to be extraordinarily proud of our Operation Smile volunteers and staff for a job so marvelously done. Thank you will never be enough. - Randy Sherman, M.D. BILL HARRIGAN During WJOS, I had the opportunity to participate with the medical team in Quito, Ecuador. We were privileged to be joined by American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) President-elect Dr. John Canady and ASPS Executive Vice President Paul Pomerantz. Drs. Canady, Magee and I had the privilege to join with other medical volunteers to provide 107 children with new smiles. One day, surgeries were transmitted through a live feed to a hospital auditorium where a select group of doctors were present to observe and learn about the types of procedures conducted by Operation Smile. Our education department made certain that opportunities were available at each site to gain working Operation Smile credentials and meet the Global Standards of Care. The two-month ‘sharing smiles’ campaign encouraged Windows Live customers to share photos of their smiles with people around the world. To kick off this partnership, a visual spectacular was unveiled November 6 in New York City – a 65 foot tall sphere with a montage of smiles. Lending their support to the evening were Smile Ambassadors Vanessa and Donald Trump Jr., “Access Hollywood” host Billy Bush and O.A.R. bassist Benj Gershman. Using four IMAX-style projectors and thousands of pictures of smile photographs submitted at windowslive.com, Microsoft created a fitting tribute to Operation Smile’s 25 years. People in Los Angeles and New York could also participate in the smile-sharing, in person, for two days (November 6 and 7) at the Hollywood & Highland Center in Los Angeles and South Street Seaport in New York. Kids had the opportunity to “save” a virtual patient online by visiting www.operation.com and clicking on the oxygen pump, a new feature of the OPERATION Rescue Kit game. For every click, Hasbro increased its Visitors to the www.operation.com website donation by 25 cents. In the fall, “Mobile Rescue Unit” pressed the oxygen pump to increase donations events were held in ten cities across the country, giving kids the opportunity to play the game, meet local celebrities, assist Dr. Funny Bone, and press a giant oxygen pump to increase the donation to Operation Smile by 25 cents. Hasbro’s donation to Operation Smile for this project was $75,000. “Hasbro Games is excited to help Operation Smile celebrate their 25th Anniversary by bringing new smiles to children across the globe,” said Wanda Sanchez-Miller, Senior Marketing Manager of Hasbro Games. “We hope that giving kids the opportunity to increase the donation to Operation Smile will give them a reason to smile and also foster an appreciation for the reward of helping others.” Create Your Own Web Page to Raise Funds for Operation Smile CHRIS BLUMENSHINE In August, Hasbro released OPERATION Rescue Kit game, a new version of the original game that challenges would-be surgeons to use their steady hands and skills to remove new ailments such as “joystick wrist,” “texting thumb” or “belly button fluff.” Now four games in one, the game has multiple skill levels, and an additional requirement to keep the patient alive during surgery – the oxygen pump! Cody Linley, who stars as Jake Ryan in “Hannah Montana,” pushes the oxygen pump at an event Seventeen-year-old Massachusetts high school senior Brian Ake has set a goal to raise more than $18,000 through his OneSmile web page – and he’s already half-way there. Brian, born with a bilateral cleft lip requiring 21 operations to date, has dedicated his senior internship to producing a documentary about his story to help others conquer the physical and emotional challenges that can come with a cleft lip. “When a child is born with a bilateral cleft, many doctors and psychologists believe they will carry physical and emotional scars. I set out to prove them wrong. Instead, I was determined to make the best of my situation and help others as well.” The OneSmile.org web page allows you to start your own fundraising campaign! OPERATION SMILE | 11 Binh is welcomed home Operation Smile medical volunteers screened Binh on November 9 and two days later he received surgery to repair his cleft lip. Binh’s father said, “I think Operation Smile is so wonderful and we are grateful for having our child operated on.” During the mission in Hue, days of rain overflowed the local river and flood waters devastated the city. Binh’s family waited at the Center until flood waters had receded and traveled home three days after his surgery. Upon arrival, their home had no electricity and their walls were stained with water lines where it had reached three feet high. This situation did not dampen their homecoming. They were greeted by Binh’s grandparents, aunts, uncles and neighbors who were amazed at the little boy’s new smile. His mother said, “We’re looking forward to getting another surgery from Operation Smile to repair his cleft palate.” WWW.STUDIO404PHOTOGRAPHY.COM WWW.STUDIO404PHOTOGRAPHY.COM Ton That Nhat Binh from Hue, Vietnam, is a strong little boy for being born premature, weighing only 1.3 kilograms.
