Thermo Scientific Savant Explorer SpeedVac Concentrator
Maximizing throughput and sample integrity in drug discovery
In the drug discovery chain, samples
are precious – and so is time. Every
day you’re under pressure to process
large volumes of samples, working
with speed and precision in pursuit
of new discoveries.
Our Savant Explorer SpeedVac®
concentrator is designed to accelerate
your drug discovery efforts and
remove obstacles to productivity.
This advanced platform protects your
valuable samples and helps you work
more efficiently and productively so
you can spend more time focusing on
new drug development.
The Savant Explorer SpeedVac
concentrator is a technologically
advanced vacuum concentration
system that can stand up to the
heavy demands of a busy, multi-user
laboratory environment. Combining
high-volume sample capacity with an
innovative design and sophisticated
monitoring capabilities, this
concentrator is an ideal highthroughput system for key
pharmaceutical and biotechnology
applications such as drug discovery
compound management, drying of
HPLC fractions, and solid- and
solution-phase synthesis.
A -50°C cold trap is located just inches away from
the chamber, maximizing the speed of solvent
removal and minimizing evaporation times.
The 6-position Snowflake Rotor holds up to:
• (30) shallow-well microplates or
• (12) deep-well microplates or
• (72) 20 ml scintillation vials or
• (90) 16 x 125 mm tubes or
• (144) 1 dram vials or
• (210) 13 x 100 mm tubes
Primary controls – vacuum level, temperature,
heat time, radiant lamp time, run time and vacuum
ramp – are easily set and monitored on the bright,
easy-to-read digital display.

The Savant Explorer SpeedVac concentrator
delivers high-throughput in a compact, userfriendly design. It opens like a clam shell,
making it easy to access the chamber to load
and unload your samples.

High Capacity & Efficient Solvent Evaporation
Increase Your Throughput
Our Savant Explorer SpeedVac
concentrator is a high-capacity
system that can easily accommodate
a large number of samples in a wide
variety of formats. With multiple rotors
and more than twenty blocks to choose
from, the Savant Explorer SpeedVac
concentrator supports sample formats
ranging from tubes, vials and
microplates to large-volume flasks.
Rapid, Efficient Solvent Evaporation
With the Savant Explorer SpeedVac
concentrator, solvent removal is fast
and efficient. The unit’s 5-liter, -55°C
cold trap is positioned just inches
from the chamber. In addition, an
expanded vacuum port and short
More than twenty blocks are available to
support a wide variety of sample formats.
vapor path allow rapid removal of
vapors for improved drying and
effective handling of difficult-toremove solvents like dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO).
The Savant Explorer SpeedVac
concentrator further accelerates the
evaporation rate by maintaining accurate chamber temperatures. This provides the added advantage of reducing vapor condensation in the sample
chamber, which minimizes contamination and cleaning down time.
Dual-format Cold Trap
Another unique and time-saving
feature is the dual-format cold trap.
The two-position high-capacity H-rotor fits eight
aluminum blocks of tubes up to 100 mm in height,
providing a total capacity of up to:
• (96) 20 ml scintillation vials or
• (192) 16 x 100 mm tubes or (192) 1 dram vials or
• (280) 13 x 100 mm tubes
The direct-drain configuration
ensures convenience and safety
by allowing you to drain solvents
directly into a waste container at the
end of the run. The unit’s hot gas
defrost feature and convenient side
drain saves time so you can start the
next run immediately.
For certain acids such as HCl, the trap
can be used with a glass flask inserted
into the trap, allowing the solvent
to collect and freeze directly in the
flask. The flask can be removed for
defrosting, and a clean flask can be
inserted to begin another run.
The two-position Gilson rack rotor fits two
Gilson racks of tubes up to 100 mm in height.
Advanced Controls
Ensure High Sample Integrity
When you are working with small
amounts of fragile samples,
overheating can be a serious concern.
The Savant Explorer Speed Vac
concentrator incorporates numerous
features to eliminate this worry.
Intellitemp Temperature Monitoring
The Savant Explorer SpeedVac
concentrator maintains accurate sample
temperatures through its Intellitemp
monitoring and control system. This
system uses one rotor block probe
and up to three sample probes to
monitor run conditions. When used
with the “Auto-Dry” function, the
Intellitemp system automatically ends
the run when a pre-set temperature is
reached, thereby avoiding overheating.
TM
Anti-bumping design
Pre-programmed vacuum ramps and
pressure controls minimize sample
bumping and cross-contamination
with volatile solvents or mixtures.
In addition, the rotor G-force is
optimized to handle a wide variety
of tubes and protect them against
potentially harmful effects such
as tube breakage.

vacuum ramping (left),
and one without.

Designed for Maximum Throughput,
Ease of Use and Durability
Compact, Integrated System – With
lab space often at a premium, our
concentrator delivers high-capacity in
a compact footprint. Concentrator,
cold trap and dry pump are combined
in one simple unit that easily fits on a
bench top, within a standard fume
hood or on a cart.
Chemically Resistant – Designed to
withstand the rigors of aggressive
solvents, our Savant Explorer SpeedVac
concentrator is constructed of
highly chemically resistant materials
such as TEFLON®, Kalrez®, highgrade stainless steel and anodized
aluminum. These materials can
withstand constant use with solvents
such as TFA, HCl, DMSO, DCM, DMF1
and acetonitrile.
Unique Ergonomic Design – The
clam-shell design accommodates
safe and easy access to samples by
exposing the front of the chamber.
There is no need to lean into the
chamber and risk inhaling vapors.
Power-Operated Lid for Convenience
and Safety – The electronic lid provides
“hands-off” opening and closing of the
chamber with the press of a button.
The lid can even be controlled
remotely from your PC through the
concentrator’s RS232 port to allow
full venting of residual vapors from
the chamber prior to handling.
Quick, Easy Side Drain – A convenient,
safe side drain allows you to drain
cold trap contents directly into an
appropriate waste container.
Easy-to-Use, Intuitive Control Panel –
Primary controls (vacuum level,
temperature, heat time, radiant lamp
time, run time and vacuum ramp) are
easily set and monitored on the
bright, easy-to-read digital display.
Oil-Free, Maintenance-Free Vacuum
Pump – The oil-free vacuum pump is
resistant to aggressive solvents and
acids, and is virtually maintenance
free. This eliminates the need to
check oil levels, change and dispose
of contaminated oil, and perform
costly rebuilds, which ensures a long
and economical life.
