I recall last year I also came over here and inaugurated the show. Let me share that we have targeted 50 billion dollar of RMG export in 2021 when Bangladesh will celebrate her 50th anniversary of Independence. Our apparel industry started its journey from 1978 exporting only $ 12000 but last year we exported garments worth 24.49 billion dollar; this year we targeted 27 billion dollar. In denim sector we are doing very well. In every sector, economically we are moving ahead. Bangladesh is no longer a bottom-less basket. Bangladesh today is a country of bright prospective. H.E. Mr. Pierre Mayauddin Ambassador & Head of the Delegation Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh Last year Bangladesh exported denim to the EU worth 610 million Euro which makes the EU the biggest export market of Bangladeshi denim. I believe that Bangladesh will progress further in term of denim value chain. I mean more improved technology and skills will be used here. The EU will always stand by your side in order to reach the goals together. I wish the second Bangladesh Denim Expo a great success. Your Jeans Made Here Bangladesh Denim Expo 05 OPENING SPEECHES H.E. Mr. Benoit-PIERRE Laramee High Commissioner of Canada to Bangladesh Canada and Bangladesh have a long term relationship which was built on the foundation of development assistance. Our mutual trade is 2 billion dollar annually, a significant portion of which is garment export. Canada offers Bangladesh duty free export to nearly all kinds of product including garments. Bangladesh has tremendous potential to increase its denim market share globally. I hope that every consumer in Canada will be able to proudly say “My jeans made in Bangladesh”. H.E. Mr. Gerben Sjoerd de Jong Ambassador of the Netherlands to Bangladesh It was a few months ago I was present in the inauguration of the 1st Bangladesh Denim Expo and found the show very interesting; now this time I see the second edition of the show is much bigger. Congratulations to Mr. Mostafiz Uddin. As the show grows rapidly, more and more international community will come and the organizers have to find a bigger place for the show. Likewise I think the 50 billion target will be realized. Since the Rana plaza, I have seen so many initiatives from the Govt, BGMEA to meet the transformation required. This is the key to success and continue the growth. 06 Bangladesh Denim Expo Your Jeans Made Here OPENING SPEECHES Mr. Md. Atiqul Islam President, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BGMEA) I would like to congratulate the organizers for organizing such a wonderful Expo. I would like to say here that the Rana Plaza and Tazreen were wake up calls for us. Since the tragic incidents we are trying our best to improve the factories. We want to think positively and work together. Day by day Bangladesh is moving forward. We want to give the message to the world that “No east, no west, Bangladesh is the best in garment manufacturing. “ Mr. Abdus Salam Murshedy President, Bangladesh Exporters Association, & Former President, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BGMEA) Your Jeans Made Here Denim production is not based on seasons. People wear denim 12 months in a year and in every season. Let me share the global position as well as our position in denim. In 2014, Bangladesh exported denim to the world worth 2.5 billion dollar, but if we count denim related products it was 3.5 billion dollar in total. Last year we exported around 44 million pcs of denim to USA and 112 million pcs of denim to the EU. If you see the graph from 2009 to 2014 our growth rate was 11.16 percent. To improve more, I think Bangladesh Denim expo can help our denim manufacturers a lot. Such initiatives will greatly help our apparel industry. Asheshwar Jha R & D Manager, Argon Denim ltd 16 Bangladesh Denim Expo Your Jeans Made Here SPECIAL SEMINAR Made in Bangladesh A New Reality: Vision 2021 Jointly organized by Bangladesh Denim Expo & Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BGMEA), the seminar covered present business and investment trends, global sourcing dynamics and potentials for Bangladesh, prior issues to support the growth potentials, like infrastructure/port/SEZs, power/gas, human resources development, compliance issues, prudent commercial diplomacy & political stability; supportive policies and coordination between different government agencies, product & market diversification, a holistic/national approach towards branding Bangladesh and its denim industry. The discussions focused towards devising a strategic action plan to overcome the existing challenges and realize the potentials. Your Jeans Made Here Bangladesh Denim Expo 17 SPECIAL SEMINAR The vision to export RMG worth 50 billion dollar is a national vision. I would say that you need to achieve the vision considering the national environment. If you want to gear up, you have to ensure safer environment. You need to create a society which cares of environment, fight against green house gas emissions. I think that will be the proper approach to achieve the vision. Chief Guest H.E. Mrs. Sophie Aubert Ambassador of France to Bangladesh Keynote Speaker Mr. Anwar Ul Alam Chowdhury (Parvez) Chairman of Argon Denim Ltd, & former President, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BGMEA) Moderator Mr. Faruque Hassan Managing Director, Giant Group & Immediate Past Vice President, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BGMEA) 18 Bangladesh Denim Expo Our honorable Prime Minister’s vision is Bangladesh will be a middle income country by 2021. In line with the vision of the Honorable PM, BGMEA also fixed the target of achieving US$ 50 billion dollar of RMG export by 2021. Certainly some of us raised question how to achieve it. China is reducing their capacity on mass production of RMG and concentrating on value added products. Vietnam will have some of that share but Bangladesh will have a bigger opportunity. The apparel products of India and Pakistan are not similar with what we are producing. Yes we have challenges like backward linkage, productivity and so on, but if we can keep our current performance of production, that will be enough to achieve the target. In Bangladesh, the readymade garment industry started its journey in the late 1970s with only $12000 export, by the year 1983 our export was only 31 million dollar, by 1990s the RMG export was 866 million dollar and it was 4.8 billion dollar by 2000. In 2009 the RMG export reaches 11.2 billion dollar and the export became 24.58 billion dollar in 2014. When the MFA phase was going to be stopped, it was predicted by many that we would have a massive upset in our export. But we the people of the country proved that the prediction was wrong. The recent global recession was another test for us and we have successfully maintained our export growth even during the recession. Let me share also that Bangladesh Denim Expo have secured an inseparable place in our apparel industry. I feel proud when I see many of the jeans are “made in Bangladesh” and I also like to say “ your jeans made here”. Your Jeans Made Here SPECIAL SEMINAR Special Guests Mr. Md. Shahidullah Azim Bangladesh is a nation of amazing people. The RMG sector is the example of the resilience of our people. We have faced many challenges like quota, global recession, Rana Plaza, but we have faced all the challenges very successfully every time. Despite all the problems, Bangladesh continues to maintain a steady growth rate in the RMG sector. Though we are the 2nd largest RMG exporting country of the world, there is a huge gap between China, the largest, and us. But production cost in China is now getting higher, and they are giving up RMG manufacturing. So we can avail of this opportunity. We produce good quality garments at a very competitive price. Based on these, we can say that achieving 50 billion dollar of RMG export by 2021 is possible. Vice President, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BGMEA) Bangladesh is the land of opportunity, you just have to grab it and utilize. The vision of exporting 50 billion dollar of RMG by 2021 is possible and viable, but it will not be easy. The export growth of the past has been tremendous but I do not see this time you achieve it without putting any extra effort. We have to be more transparent, have to work together in solving the problems. If Bangladesh continues the transformation they have started, if the mindset change of the factory owners, buyers, govt continues, then I don’t see any obstacle to reach the 2021 vision, you can go even beyond that. They have very successfully briefed the world the inspiring story of emerging Bangladesh. The RMG sector has tremendous potential to perform even better.
