English National Opera’s 2015 Season: CARMEN
Gold Rushes of the Whipstick
tells the story of diggers who turned
to the Whipstick forest in the hope
of striking it rich, once the rich
alluvial diggings of Bendigo had
been worked out.
A passionate tale of lust, seduction and betrayal, no other opera boasts as popular a
following as Bizet’s Carmen. Set during the dying days of Franco’s Spain, Calixto Bieito’s
acclaimed production of this must-see opera has been enjoyed by audiences across Europe.
Bizet’s dazzling score evokes all the sounds and sizzling atmosphere of Spain through some
of the opera’s most famous melodies, from Carmen’s seductive Habanera to the Toreadors
stirring parade.
Presented by documentary maker
Jamie Roberts, it features the many
ruins, sites and diverse landscapes
of the forest and is a must see
for anyone interested in local and
Australian history.
Sensational mezzo-soprano Justina Gringyte leads the cast, alongside internationally
acclaimed tenor Eric Cutler as José. Returning to the Coliseum to conduct this stunning
production is Sir Richard Armstrong. (2hrs 45mins, including 20 minute interval)
Tix $19.95 with DVD, or $10 film
only. Q&A with Jamie Roberts at
the conclusion of the screening.
Bookings recommended on 0408 521 972.
