Fáilte - Welcome
A Chairde
This is the 3rd year that we are running An Béal Binn and
this year it has a focus on the centenary of the 1916 Rising.
We are delighted to welcome author Frank Shouldice,
whose ancestors were firmly rooted in Mayo and
whose roots were firmly, rebelliously, republican.
It is the individual stories of historically peripheral figures
that have been given a platform in this centenary year
which has made the celebrations so fascinating for so many
and there are few narratives as interesting as that
of the two Ballaghadereen brothers, Frank and Jack Shouldice.
We are delighted to be joined on the night by Cleite,
an exceptional Creative Writing group, based in Erris.
Déanfar comóradh freisin ar roinnt de
na príomh-charachtair lárnacha ón Éirí Amach,
agus beidh léiriú de Pearse in Pictures ó Fíbín,
comhlacht drámaíochta as Gaillimh,
a bhfuil an iomad gradam bainte amach acu le roinnt mhaith blianta.
Sa léiriú seo tá amharc-ealaíon, ceol agus scéalaíocht
ó dhuine des na cleachtóirí is nuálaí in Éirinn.
There is a wonderful, Erris inspired, exhibition, Precipice,
by Amelia Stein, Aosdána member,
that is the topic of a talk by the artist and Dr. Peadar McArdle.
The weekend events start with a fabulous documentary on the humpback whale.
Déanfar cíoradh ar stair, eolaíocht, ealaíon agus an dúlra
sa bhFéile Focal seo 's'againne.

Fíbín presents Mac Piarais i bPictiúir
Pearse in Pictures is a striking account of Ireland’s
1916 Easter Rising
Fíbín presents “Mac Piarais i bPictiúir” written and devised by
Harry McGee (Political Editor Irish Times) and Dara McGee.
“Mac Piarais i bPictiúir” is a striking reimagination of Ireland's 1916 Easter Rising.
The insurrection led by a small group of idealists
resulted in a heavy defeat with all the leaders
executed. However, it was the spark that lit the
bonfire, that culminated in independent Ireland.
The performance focuses on five leading figures
of the Rising with a dramatic unexpected twist at
the end.
“Mac Piarais i bPictiúir” is the story of the
1916 Rising across 6 days and told through key
characters. The story is illustrated live by artist
Dara McGee with musical accompaniment in
between the chapters of the story, narrated in both
Irish and English
Léiríonn Fíbín "Mac Piarais i bPictiúir" scríofa agus
leagtha amach ag Harry McGee agus Dara McGee.
Athchruthú iontach é “Mac Piarais i bPictiúir” ar Éirí
Amach na Cásca in Éirinn i 1916. B’shin Éirí Amach a
threoraigh grúpa beag idéalaithe a bhfuair a gcéile
comhraic an lámh in uachtar orthu nuair a cuireadh
chun báis a gceannairí uile. Ba é an tÉirí Amach
áfach, a chur tús leis na himeachtaí a raibh
neamhspleáchas mhuintir na hÉireann mar
bhuaicphointe air.
Díríonn an léiriú ar chúigear phríomh-phearsana ón Éirí Amach agus tarlaíonn
casadh drámatúil ag an deireadh, nach mbíonn aon súil leis.

Grandpa the Sniper:
An Ordinary Man
in Extraordinary Times
Frank Shouldice Jnr is a writer, journalist, and
dramatist, who has written a book called “Grandpa
the Sniper” which tells the story of his grandfather,
also Frank Shouldice
In April 1916 Ballaghaderreen-born Frank Shouldice
lined out for the Dublin football team in the final of the
GAA's Croke Cup. Two weeks later he's up the Jameson malthouse at North
King Street with a rifle in one hand and a borrowed pair of binoculars in the
other. 'Grandpa The Sniper' is a remarkable account of what happened next,
forensically researched and written by his grandson Frank Shouldice Jnr. in a
work described by Prof Diarmaid Ferriter as "rich, evocative and vivid".
The veteran marksman kept a stockpile of
personal letters received during the time he was
incarcerated in Stafford Prison, Frongoch
internment camp and later in Boyle barracks,
Mountjoy, Wandsworth, Pentonville, Wormwood
Scrubs and Brixton prisons. As part of the
infamous ‘German Plot’ he was also detained at
Usk Jail in Wales, from which he dramatically
escaped in January 1919 along with three
comrades (Joe McGrath, George Geraghty and
Barney Mellowes).
In addition to examining his grandfather’s
personal records, research took the author
through national archives and military records
in Ireland, Wales and England, unearthing a
surveillance file compiled on the “most disloyal”
Shouldice family by MI5 British ntelligence with
the aid of the British military in Ireland and
‘G’ Division detectives of the Dublin Metropolitan Police at Dublin Castle.
