The new Gut Bridge replacement consists of a bascule bridge with a innovative
lifting mechanism that utilizes efficient and low maintenance hydraulic cylinders.
The small scale of the bridge towers and hangers fits perfectly with the historic
context of the South Bristol fishing coastal village and its marine environment.
The new bridge provides more clearance than the existing swing bridge in
both the open an close positions reducing the number of openings per year.
The main span over the navigation channel is approximately 35’ with a cross
section providing two traffic lanes and an ADA-compliant sidewalk. The entire
steel structure will be fabricated off-site and brought to the channel via barge.
The Rosales + Partners bascule bridge design will enhance views of and from the
water with its elegant profile and overall slenderness.
