01/13 MAPPING NEWCASTLE PORTS - WORKSHOP

Your opportunity to contribute to a series of community and workplace workshops that gather oral histories, drawings
and written information. The aim is to describe all aspects of Newcastle Port life in pictures (you may wish to contribute
a sketch or illustration) and words – industrial, leisure, sports, retail, historical, geographical, environmental and
anecdotal. It is intended that a vibrant and collaborative public artwork will eventually result. Liz has for 25 years
provided illustrations and designs for international commercial clients, Government bodies, educators and museums and
wants to learn some of your memoire.
02/13 JAMES WALLIS – FATHER OF A “MOST DESIRABLE SETTLEMENT”

At 32 years of age, James Wallis was appointed the seventh commandant of the penal settlement of Newcastle, NSW.
Among his many achievements was the building of Christ Church Cathedral. Today Novocastrians are still enjoying his
many legacies. Who was this man and why do so few remember him? Suzanne will bring James Wallis to life and tell you
why he should be remembered and recognised.

04/13 KOKODA AND BACK
Leader: Warren Hardy

A travel talk describing the Kokoda Track, with photographs taken over several trips showing typical scenes along the
path and also of village life.
The walk is now well known and documented, with its blend of rugged mountain scenery and historical background. The
Kokoda Track is now regarded as one of the world’s classic walks, with majestic jungle and a diversity of plant life. It
attracts more and more admirers each year!
05/13 SANDGATE CEMETERY
Leader: Terry St George
Date: May 27th

Terry worked with the Department of Lands in NSW for many years as a Registered Surveyor in the Hunter and Mid
North Coast regions of NSW, retiring in 2010. Approximately 10 years ago he formed his own software company. His
introduction to the Trust was in 1995, when he helped the Trust to secure significant Federal Government funding to
upgrade the cemetery; he then commenced development work on a software management system to manage the vast
amounts of data contained in the cemetery. He has been assisting Sandgate Cemetery Trust ever since. In 2012 Terry
was appointed as a Trustee of Sandgate Cemetery Trust.

Discover the early history and architectural fascinations of Newcastle as it developed from a convict settlement into
Australia’s 7th largest city.
Walk lasts approximately 2 hours and involves some city hills.
07/13 EVOLUTION – THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH

A discussion course on the evidence for evolution, with particular reference to Richard Dawkins' book "The Greatest
Show on Earth". The idea is not to proselytise for evolution but to look at the evidence that has led to its being a widely
held view, especially among professionals.
Note: creationists will be welcome and their views on the evidence will be heard, although this course is not intended as
a creationism versus evolution debate of the usual kind.
08/13 SHAKESPEARE ON FILM – TWELFTH NIGHT

Just sit back and enjoy a stunning film version of one of Shakespeare’s greatest comedies. This romantic comic tale of
loss and love, disguise and gender stars Helena Bonham Carter, Toby Stephens, Richard E Grant, Nigel Hawthorne, Mel
Smith and Ben Kingsley. You don’t have to be a Shakespeare expert to enjoy this comedy and marvel at how many of our
modern film and television comedies, Some Like it Hot for example, have used the comic elements of this play written
over 400 years ago.
The Place: Charlestown Community Centre is located at the corner of Frederick and Pearson Streets, in Charlestown
Square. The Place is conveniently located at the southern end of the Charlestown Square shopping centre. Access to The
Place is from outside Charlestown Square, via the front door in Frederick St. There is plenty of public transport to
Charlestown Square and plenty of parking at the Square.

12/13 THE CLASSIFICATION OF LIVING THINGS

Brain food for you; digestible and informative. Learn more about the classification of living things including the
characteristics of living things and taxonomy, bacteria – how they started all life (and how we now help their evolution

Arthur Phillip, John Hunter and Philip Gidley King - The lives of these three men were very closely tied during the
early years of the Colony, hence the combined topic. Each faced enormous difficulties, in large part due to the
indifference of the powers that be in England, and the distance which meant that answers to requests frequently
took up to 12 months.

Join fellow U3A members for a cruise up river to historic Morpeth, once one of the busiest trade ports in NSW.
Travelling with Nova Cruises, this full day excursion leaves Honeysuckle (Lee Wharf) at 9.30am sharp and returns
approx. 5.30pm. You have 2 hours in Morpeth to enjoy lunch (own expense), shop, explore or visit the museum.
Morning tea on board is complemented by tastings of local wines, sourdough breads and handmade fudge.
Afternoon tea and coffee is supplied on board. Excursion runs rain or shine.

18/13 MORNING TEA @ MISS PORTER’S HOUSE - Connecting People Of The Past, The Present And The Future

Miss Porter’s House is the only National Trust owned property in Newcastle. It was built by Mr Herbert Porter who ran a
family business in Hunter Street, on what is now a car park immediately behind the house. Mr Porter and his new bride,
Florence Jolly, moved into the house in 1910. They had two daughters, Ella and Hazel. Both lived in the house for the
whole of their lives. Herbert Porter died in the influenza epidemic in 1919 at the age of 41. The last surviving daughter,
Hazel bequeathed the house to the National Trust when she died in 1997.
We will have a delicious morning tea and a guided tour of Miss Porter’s House, led by volunteer guides. The cost is $20
per person and all of this amount will go to The National Trust to help maintain Miss Porter’s House and to conserve the
extensive collection housed therein.
There will be a limit on numbers and so you should book early to avoid disappointment.Please complete payment form on

19/13 AMERICAN TRIBAL-STYLE BELLY DANCE – ATS

ATS is an exciting group presentation where dancers perform together within their “tribe”. The key element of ATS is
“group improvisation”. An ATS performance may incorporate solos, duets, trios and circles while other dancers provide a
“chorus line” whose steps complement the featured dancers – all steps are improvised during the performance. ATS
steps, formations, cues, transitions and improvisation techniques will be presented. There will be opportunities for
“caravanserai” to perform at student soirées throughout the year.
20/13 MIDDLE EASTERN BELLY DANCE -Choreographies
Time: 1.00pm – 2.30pm
Cost: $10
Suitable for all girls continuing from last Semester. All present choreographies will be refined and exciting new
choreographies will be taught. Girls who enjoy performing will have the opportunity to participate in our Nursing Home
Concert Program but are under no obligation to do so.
21/13 BELLY DANCING FROM WITHIN – A Technique Course
Time: 2.30pm – 3.30pm
Cost: $10
This improvisation-based course is suitable for beginners and continuing dancers. Belly dance moves have been divided
into 8 stationary families and travelling steps. Each family of movement is centred on lower, mid and upper body in both
basic and classical pose. The course will cover a new family and travel step each week as well as basic poses and belly
dance principles. Each lesson will end with free dancing in small groups followed by cool-down stretches. Wear
comfortable shoes and a shimmy belt and bring a bottle of water.

22/13 CHINESE BRUSH ART – 'THE FOUR SEASONS': A CHINESE PAINTING COURSE

Learn traditional techniques of single brush strokes and double colour loading to produce bamboo and flowers using
bamboo brush and ricepaper.

Circle dance is a mix of folk and meditative dance traditions, and is, of course, danced in a circle.
Circle dance is very gentle, and has a meditative aspect that is relaxing and gentle on the body.
Participants should bring water and wear comfortable, non-marking shoes.
24/13 REDISCOVERING HOMER’S ILIAD AND ODYSSEY

Have you ever wondered why Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey continue to have such impact on our literature and arts? These
epic “poems” are the oldest, still existing, works of Western literature and are believed to have been composed near the
end of the 8th century BC, in the Greek coastal region of Anatolia. In these sessions I will introduce Homer and provide
illustrated outlines of these epic poems, touching on their main themes. In order to better appreciate the stories of both
poems I will describe the Trojan War and illustrate the archaeology of Troy (Schliemann). I will also report on the
“geography” of the Odyssey (although most scholars agree that Odysseus’ landfalls are best treated as imaginary places).
In a final session I want to provide some examples of how these famous poems have influenced Western literature as
well as visual and performing arts through the ages. Finally I would like to discuss David Malouf‘s novel “Ransom” which
shines a new light on the Iliad. Hopefully, participants can borrow or buy a copy of the book (published in 2010 by
Vintage Books).

29/13 HISTORIES OF THE CANNING STOCK ROUTE

What connections can be found between aboriginal desert paintings, 4-wheel drives on a challenging track, beef cattle
and sheep? The Canning Stock Route is these days mostly known as an almost irresistible challenge for serious 4-wheel
drivers. It conjures up pictures of vehicles covered in red mud and /or dust. Those are the lucky vehicles, the ones that
make it through... But there are other aspects to the Canning Stock Route which may be less well known. Why was this
stock route established in the first place? Was it effective in what was hoped to achieve with it? What were the
consequences for the original inhabitants of that region, one of the few areas where aboriginal people were still living
undisturbed by white settlers and pastoralists? How did the aboriginal peoples cope with changes which meant that it
became impossible to remain on their lands?
In 2010 an Aboriginal History of the Canning Stock Route was made public through a collection of paintings shown in The

Lesley will spend the first hour of each lesson dealing with the finer points of the language. Class members will then

course would require regular participation to be justified. If you have an interest in the subject and would like to be part
