A look: Lanto Griffin (2015) Griffin will be back to defend his title, part of a long and winding road around the professional ranks. Since his win at Ballyhack last July, Griffin has made it to the second stage of Web.com Tour qualifying, won a PGA Tour Latinoamerica event in Uruguay and participated in events on the SwingThought Tour. Griffin currently ranks 45th on the Latinoamerica money list. Jay Woodson (2012-14) Woodson’s three-year stranglehold on the State Open title ended last year, but he still finished tied for second. Woodson earned a top-10 finish in a PGA Tour Latinoamerica event in Mexico earlier this year. Roger Newsom (2008, 2011) The Virginia Beach ophthalmologist has won twice as an 2015 recap: Lanto Griffin posts six-stroke victory to claim first Delta Dental State Open of Virginia title amateur and has a Senior Open of Virginia title to his credit as well. Evan Beck (2010) Beck, who is now playing professionally, has a share of the 72-hole State Open scoring record (268). In addition to his victory, he has a pair of runner-up finishes. Faber Jamerson (1999, 2006, 2009) The PGA general manager at Falling River CC in Appomattox, Jamerson is one of four three-time champs in this year’s field. One of three players ever to win the State Open as both an amateur and as a professional. Jon Corliss (2003) Corliss, a professional, defeated Paul Scaletta with a birdie on the first playoff hole at Willow Oaks CC to earn his title. Corliss won the Senior Open of Virginia in 2008. Keith Decker (1996, 2001-02) The Martinsville amateur and Chatmoss CC member is one of two players in this year’s field to have won backto-back State Opens, Woodson being the other. Rick Schuller (1998) The low professional at last year’s Senior Open of Virginia, Schuller finished in the top 20 at this year’s PGA Professional National Championship and earned a spot at the PGA Championship at Baltusrol later this month. Craig Gunn (1992) A PGA Professional, Gunn posted a four-day 280 at Willow Oaks CC to earn his championship in 1992. Tim White (1987) Won his title at Brandermill CC in Midlothian. Woody FitzHugh (1984*, 1986, 1988) Now 64 years old, FitzHugh’s 1984 title came in the VPGA Open, the final year before the VPGA and VSGA Opens merged into one championship. ROANOKE — There are no giant scoreboards or placards on the course at Ballyhack Golf Club for the Delta Dental State Open of Virginia. So the only way a player knows where he stands in a round is through whispers from followers. Lanto Griffin heard that his closest competitor, fellow professional Evan Beck, was closing in as he approached the ninth hole in Saturday’s final round. “I heard you cut it to three,” Griffin told Beck at the scorer’s table after the round. When someone told Griffin the lead was actually chipped to one stroke, he replied: “It’s a good thing I didn’t know at that point.” Still Griffin, who opened the day with a five-shot lead, sensed he needed to amp up his game, especially after a pair of disappointing bogeys at Nos. 7 and 8. He did just that, making birdie at No. 9 and eagle at No. 10, helping him regain control of the tournament. After Beck made double bogey on No. 13, Griffin cruised home to earn his first VSGA Championship, shooting a 12-under aggregate 204 (66-68-70) to claim the State Open title by six strokes over Beck, Roanoke amateur Justin Young and three-time State Open champion Jay Woodson. “That was the point where I knew, OK, we’re back in control,” Griffin said of his birdie-eagle turn on the two par-5 holes. “Not that it was over at that point, but I just knew that I didn’t really need to push the rest of the way. I was pretty happy with the way I hit it.” Griffin, a Blacksburg-based, 27-year-old mini-tour player who has qualified for one Web.com Tour event this year, earned $6,300 and the Farmington Trophy for his victory. Young, a Ballyhack member, earned the Fritz Souder Trophy as the low amateur. He finished one stroke clear of Haymarket’s Scott Shingler, who was one stroke away from being the low amateur for the second straight year. “He owed me one,” Young joked about Shingler, who eliminated him in the second round of match play at the VSGA Amateur Championship at Charlottesville’s Farmington Country Club earlier this month. Professional Fielding Brewbaker shot a 4-under 68 and finished fifth at 211. Ruckersville’s Logan Yates, who will play at Virginia Tech in the fall, shot the best round of the day, a 6-under 66 that moved him to eighth place for the tournament. — VSGA.org, July 18, 2015. 2016 Delta Dental State Open of Virginia » vsga.org » mapga.com More professionals to watch About last year ... Nearly half of the field at this year’s Delta Dental State Open of Virginia is professional, a mix of Middle Atlantic Section PGA teaching pros and touring professional players. Outside of the aforementioned past champions, some worth watching include: With the State Open returning to Ballyhack for a third straight year, it might be useful to look back at last year’s event to find some trends. Jason Robinson, PGA (Locust Hill Golf Club, Charles Town W. Va.) Reached the quarterfinals of the MAPGA Match Play Championship, where he lost to Rick Schuller. Yong Joo, PGA (Broad Run Golf Practice Facility, Bristow, Va.) Finished in top 10 of 2014 State Open of Virginia. Steven Delmar (University of Maryland, College Park, Md.) Reached round of 16 at MAPGA Match Play Championship. Jeffrey Thomas, PGA (Liberty University, Lynchburg, Va.) The Flames’ head men’s golf coach is a regular in the top 10 at the State Open of Virginia. Fielding Brewbaker (Roanoke, Va.) Local favorite finished in the top 5 at last year’s State Open. Steven Jenkins (Richmond, Va.) Finished tied for 6th in the 2015 State Open and was runner up in 2007 at Independence GC. Players averaged a score of 4.853 on the par-5 second hole, which played between 514 and 538 yards. Competitors carded a whopping 108 birdies on the hole and nine of the 20 eagles yielded in the tournament came on No. 2. The second highest birdie total was on the downhill, par-5 15th hole (83). Justin Young (Ballyhack GC) was the low amateur at last year’s State Open after shooting 70-71-69—210 to finish in a tie for second with professionals Evan Beck and Jay Woodson. Young later advanced to the round of 16 at the U.S. MidAmateur Championship and earned VSGA Men’s Golfer of the Year honors. Young enters the tournament at No. 2 in this year’s VSGA Player Rankings. Toughest hole: No. 16 Playing the 16th, a 404-yard par 4 (which can play as long as 491 yards), was difficult for just everyone in the field. The scoring average on the hole was 4.533, and players made a tournament-high 45 double bogeys or worse on the hole. Only 24 birdies were recorded on the hole. Feeling at home Easiest hole: No. 2 The back was tougher Overall, the back nine played to a 38.280 stroke average. The outward nine played to a 37.966 stroke average. Three of the five toughest holes could be found on the inward nine at Ballyhack. Best round Amateur Matthew DiSalvo posted the lowest single-round score in the tournament, shooting a 7-under 65 in the second round a day after shooting 77 in the opening round. DiSalvo finished in a tie for 12th. Scores in the 60s There were 15 total rounds in the 60s. Only one player managed to shoot in the 60s twice, and fittingly, it was champion Lanto Griffin, who followed his opening round 66 with a 68. Low final round Amateur Logan Yates closed with a 66 to climb into the Top 10. Will VSGA Amateur success carry over? Fourteen of the 32 players who qualified for match play at the 103rd VSGA Amateur Championship, held June 28-July 2 at The Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech, are in the field for the Delta Dental State Open of Virginia. Semifinalist Mark Lawrence Jr. (Hermitage CC), who lost to eventual champion Joey Lane, headlines that list. The others: Kevin Archer (Spring Creek GC), Nick Brediger (Roanoke CC), Buck Brittain (The Virginian GC), Jonathan Coats (Bayville GC), Lee Fisher (Poplar Grove GC), Conner Hayden (The Virginian GC), Ryan Muthiora (Spring Creek GC), Ben Ramsey (Fincastle on the Mountain), Scott Shingler (Evergreen CC), Evan Smith (VSGA eClub Roanoke), Rob Witherspoon (Meadowbrook CC), Logan Yates (Greene Hills Club) and Young. 2016 Delta Dental State Open of Virginia » vsga.org » mapga.com Middle Atlantic Section PGA information 4/11 Britt Sloan Scramble Manor CC, Rockville, Md. 4/18 MAPGA Senior-Junior Championship Woodholme CC, Pikesville-Md. 4/28-9/3 MAPGA Senior Match Play Various sites 5/9-6/8 MAPGA Match Play Championship The Foundry GC, Powhatan, Va./ Stoney Creek at Wintergreen, Nellysford, Va. 5/23 Club Car Pro-President CC of Virginia, James River Course, Richmond, Va. 6/6 National Car Rental Spring Pro-Scratch Piedmont Club, Haymarket, Va. 6/20 Facility Championship Loudoun G&CC, Purcellville, Va. 7/5 Delta Dental PGA Last Chance Qualfier Augustine CC, Stafford, Va. 7/14-16 Delta Dental State Open of Virginia Ballyhack GC, Roanoke, Va. 7/18 MAPGA Military Pro-Am Andrews AFB South, Andrews AFB, Md. 7/25 MAPGA Women’s Championship Raspberry Falls G&HC, Leesburg, Va. 8/1-2 National Car Rental Assistant Champ.
