VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 FALL UPDATE Coyote Howler You’re in Coyote Country! 2010-2011 INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Message from the Principal Importance of State Testing Available Services A Publication of Combs High School and Eighth Grade Academy 2505 E. Germann Road, San Tan Valley, AZ 85140 1 First Semester Celebrations…A Note from Principal Mayberry 2 Dear Parents, Students, and Community Members: 3 Coyote Sports 4 Coyote Sports Continues 5 Sports Continued 6 Coyotes 7 Wrestling 2010 has been stupendous! The Combs students have really outdone themselves this semester. Did you know that we had our first varsity sports seasons, or that the band marched their first ever show on the football field in brand new uniforms? And how about Oktoberfest-- what an event that was! Combs students have made this semester one to remember. I began the semester by giving each teacher One Red Paper Clip. The challenge was to trade their paper clip for something bigger and better and in the process not only help themselves but also help someone else. Daily, teachers make a difference in the life a young person trading their paper clip for something bigger and better. This process only serves to strengthen CHS bonds, and propel learning to new heights. We have dedicated ourselves to the improvement of student achievement, student involvement, and in the process, have also accomplished making the school a community hub. Combs High School is the place to be! Our parking lot is always full because there is always activity. CHS students have successfully created over 30 clubs on campus that are actively meeting and intriguing student interest daily. The student directed TV newscast produces a production- a-month that never ceases to amaze. The first edition of this year’s newspaper was published and its quality and professionalism would stun the average citizen. The class of 2012 has matured into an amazing group of leaders for the rest of the student population. It is has been a pleasure and a joy to watch their transformation. They have done a great job of setting traditions. As they continue their journey, Combs becomes a better place because they are here. Please take the opportunity to come spend some time with us. Check the newspaper, and newsletter for updates on our wealth of upcoming events. We look forward to welcoming you to Coyote territory. Go Coyotes!!! Wishing our CHS community a wonderful second semester, and Happy New Year. Best Regards, Brenda Mayberry Principal PAGE 2 Congratulations to Mrs. Diane Ouellette for earning November’s Teacher of the Month. Mrs. Ouellette is invaluable for her daily instruction and wonderful facilitation of the CHS club, Best Buddies. Here’s a shout out for the Students of the Month as well— Congrats to our 8th Grade winner, Jose Garcia, and to the CHS Student of the Month, Fillipo Balistreri. Woot-Woot! COYOTE Staff Directory The J.O. Combs High School and Eighth Grade Academy Staff Directory is now available on the school’s website. You can access information on staff phone extensions and e-mail addresses by directing your browser to: http://www.combscoyotes.org/staff.html Why is So Important? Progress on Academic Standards State tests present two ways of looking at student progress: 1) The AIMS DPA and Stanford 10 measure how well each individual student is performing compared to other students in their grade. 2) The AIMS DPA also measures an individual student’s performance to see how well he or she has mastered specific learning objectives . This information can help students, parents and schools track the progress of individual students. These scores can also be beneficial, along with other performance indicators, in determining if a student’s instructional programming is appropriate. Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) Each year, the Arizona Department of Education uses an accountability scale to rank each public school’s academic performance. Part of the ranking formula includes how students perform on the AIMS. Schools are awarded the following labels of performance based on that formula: Excelling, Highly Performing, Performing Plus, Performing, Underperforming and Failing. HOWLER In-State Tuition Scholarship AIMS scores can help students qualify for a partial to full state university tuition scholarship. Don’t miss out on your chance to own a piece of history! Order your yearbook today! Your Coyotes Wrestling team has started to take from the pack necessary to continue in the quest in becoming a solid program, and force to reckoned with here in the East Valley. With 7 returning wrestlers and plenty of new members to fill-in the pack, we are starting to form a foundation of what a true program needs and can become. We are working hard, with intense, aggressive conditioning, skills and technique training and overall development of a disciplined mental attitude to deal with such a difficult sport. As some of our wrestlers will begin their journey on the mat for the first time, some of them took the opportunity to participate in the John Carlson JV Jamboree (Sat. Nov. 27th), held at Perry HS. As a testament to their dedication, they sacrificed a pleasurable Thanksgiving dinner in order to maintain their competition weight(s), as they will again have to sacrifice throughout the season to stay in premier condition and shape. We rallied at our first home match, the Dec.2nd opener, and are looking forward to our meet on Wednesday, January 19th against Campo Verde, Maricopa, and Saguaro. We hope to have a great Coyotes crowd come out and support the team and their CHS community. We would also like to announce the First Annual Spring Break Wrestling Camp March 14th through the 18th , ages 5 through 14. More information is soon to come, so plan on having your wrestler involved during this time. Do you need help with homework but don’t have someone at home to help? Arizona Ancient Cultures and History Club will have their field trip to Mesa Grande dig site, the Arizona Museum of Natural History, and its forensics lab on January 8th. It is an all-day trip with lunch at Wendy’s. Also, I have made arrangements for Marshall Trimble, Arizona’s official State Historian, to guest lecture to a select group of our U.S. History students and my APUSH students on January 6th. This is by invitation only in my classroom during coyote skills and R2. News from the Nurse’s Office Cold and Flu season has arrived! With the cold and flu season upon us, you do not want to keep a child home if they are not really sick; but, you also do not want to send a sick child to school. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind: 1. Common cold – a child with a mild cold but otherwise is feeling well may go to school. 2. Sore throat – and no other symptoms, your child may go to school. If white spots can be seen in the back of the throat or if a fever is present, keep your child at home and call their doctor. 3. Fever – no child with a temperature of 100 or greater should be sent to school. Your child needs to be fever free for 24 hours WITHOUT the use of over the counter medications. 4. Diarrhea – Keep your child home until the diarrhea has stopped for at least 24 hours. PLEASE REMEMBER: An adult must bring all medications to the Health Office. Medication forms need to be filled out by a parent or guardian and signed by the prescribing physician for prescription medication to be given at school. We do not administer medications which are only to be given 3 times a day or less as this can be taken care of at home. Please have your daughters pack their own female products and to always keep them in their backpack. The Health Office does not supply feminine products. Thank you, Andra McConnell, RN
