THINGS WE DON’T ALLOW....
èèPlease NO PETS - we know they’re cute but unfortunately
not permitted!
èèPlease NO WEAPONS of any description, including pellet
gun (BB) and air activated weapons, crossbows and
longbows, catapults, non-domestic knives, etc. Thank you.
AT RUSSELL VIEW YOU’LL BE
SHARING SOME GREAT SPACES
AND FACILITIES. HERE’S
A RUNDOWN OF WHAT’S
AVAILABLE, TOGETHER WITH
SOME TIPS ON HOW WE CAN ALL
MAKE YOUR CRM COMMUNITY
THE BEST IT CAN BE.
YOUR COMMON ROOM
What more can we say other than this is your
space to be you. Designed for you to sit, talk,
play games, eat, drink, watch TV and films. It is
open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is YOUR Common Room,
so make the most of it!
YOUR LAUNDERETTE
If you’re not taking your washing home to
your parents, you’ll need the launderette!
You’ll find it at the side of the common room.
The machines are card operated; cards and instructions are
included with this welcome pack. You are even able to check
whether the machines are available before you go to do your
washing with Laundry View - http://www.circuit.co.uk/i-wantto-do-my-laundry/laundry-view.
Please follow instructions and don’t overload the machines
– we can’t be responsible for damage to your clothing! If
you have any problems, please contact Circuit Laundry. The
telephone number is printed in the launderette.
YOUR BICYCLE STORE
YOUR MAIL
All post will be delivered to your post box.
Any parcels will be delivered to reception and
signed for by the team at Russell View. You
are then responsible to sign for it at reception to say you have
received your parcel.
GOT SOMETHING TO SHARE?
We’d love you to put up notices in the communal
area but if you could let us know first that would
be great! Thank you.
YOUR ENERGY
At Russell View we do our best to be as ecofriendly as possible, we know it can be difficult
but there are some really simple ways to help us
out by being green and keeping costs down:
èèTurning lights off when you go out.
èèOnly boiling as much water as you need.
èèAlways putting lids on pans.
èèUsing your radiator thoughtfully.
Secure bike storage is available to students.
7
COMMUNITY
LIVING
ALL IN ALL IT’S GREAT FUN
LIVING AT RUSSELL VIEW AND WE
UNDERSTAND THAT SOCIALISING,
PARTYING AND STAYING UP LATE
IS ALL PART OF THE STUDENT
LIFESTYLE AND WE WANT YOU
TO HAVE THE BEST YEARS OF
YOUR LIFE HERE- INCLUDING
GREAT DEGREE RESULTS.
We don’t want to bombard you with an endless list of
house rules and regulations but we do want to ensure
you live in a clean, safe and enjoyable environment.
It’s all common sense stuff, but we know how
important studies are to everyone so we have put
some reminders for CRM Student community living
below:
CARE ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY
Respect any items or pieces of equipment
belonging to Russell View. It’s a real shame
when one person ruins it for everyone else. We
love you to see your friends outside of Russell View - if you
have mates over please ensure that you accompany them at all
times onsite and let them in/out. We will not open the gates for
visitors unless you are present. Please be aware that whilst we
love you having your friends over, they need to follow the same
respect as everyone else- any misbehaviour from your visitors
will be your responsibility.
OOOOPS! ACCIDENTS DO HAPPEN
We know there are always times when things
can’t be helped but intentional damage to
Russell View property will result in a charge.
Equal charges will be made for any communal area damages if
no one is found responsible and there will be a basic charge for
cleaning if your room isn’t up to scratch at the end of term. Check
out the basic charges at the back of this guide for more info.
MAINTENANCE
We have a full time maintenance wizard on
site, there to save you when that light bulb
goes or toilet fails. We always try to sort out
any issues as soon as they are reported but in some instances
we do prioritise repairs depending on their urgency. Emergency
repairs include complete loss of power, heating, lighting or hot
water - we aim to fix these types of problems within 24 hours.
MASTER CHEF
We love for you to cook in your kitchens however
we want you to be safe when you do. We
therefore ask you to abide by the following rules:
èèDon’t leave your cookers unattended when in use.
èèKeep the grill clean- dirty grill pans catch fire very easily.
èèYour kitchen door is a fire door- please ensure it is closed
at all times.
èèSwitch on the extractor fan when cooking.
èèChip pans, deep fat fryers are not permitted. (We have a
great chippy down the road though!)
UNDERSTANDING
We know how difficult it can be when you move
in with a new bunch of people. Whilst it is great
99% of the time, we know that sometimes it can
be tough- we ask you to try and be understanding to other people
within your living space. The diverse mix of ages, backgrounds
and cultures is what makes university so amazing - please
remember to give a second thought to those around you and
respect that their thoughts might not be the same as yours. You
never know, by having a chat you might find you have more in
common than you thought!
9
NOISE
We love our music and especially having a
laugh with mates - but please be respectful of
how this can affect other people you are living
with. It might be your night where there is no early lecture but
for other people it might be their 9am the next morning and
they want an early night. One of the great parts of university is
the variety of set ups every course/student has. Please try to
think about how your noise is affecting others!
INVENTORY
On arrival you will be provided with a printed
inventory. This is a document that formally lists
all the items that are in your room. We know
you are really busy when you first move in but please ensure
that you take the time to fully check your room inventory, fill
it in and return it to your Accommodation Manager. Remember
that when you leave us, you’ll be expected to hand back the
room as it is on the inventory - make sure it is right from the
start.
TIDY
keeping your room and communal areas clean
and tidy solves a whole lot of hassle during the
year. It’s not just to ensure that we keep Russell
View at a good standard through the year however, also to
ensure that you live in hygienic, clean conditions. We know it’s
tough when living with others so we have popped a cleaning
rota in your kitchen to use if you need!
10
BINS
Putting out your bin is rubbish (sorry we had to
sneak that in) but we know it is. Please ensure
that you put your rubbish out in the correct bin.
We have general waste bins and mixed recycling bins in the
courtyard to dispose of your rubbish. Please do not leave bags of
rubbish next to the bin, outside your window, outside someone
else’s door. This can result in the entire bin not being emptied
and poor site hygiene. Fines will be issued if people are seen
doing this.
YOU
The most important aspect of CRM Students
is how we look after you. We know university
life is supposed to be the most amazing time
but we also know that sometimes it doesn’t go as smoothly
as you expected, so don’t keep your worries to yourself. We
know how stressful your personal life can be, let alone your
studies - make sure you let someone know if things start to get
on top of you.
The University provides support and advice on various issues,
such as financial, relationship and course problems as well as
a dedicated service for disabled students. If you need to talk to
somebody, you are always welcome to come and talk to us at
reception - we will try to find the appropriate person for you to
speak to at your university.
CLOTHING
We work closely with a charity called Traid who
will recycle your unwanted clothes by taking
them to the Traid charity shops for re-sale and
reuse. All money made goes to support projects fighting global
poverty, exploitation and environmental degradation across the
textile industry supply chain. You will find a collection bin on
site, usually alongside the other on-site recycling facilities. You
can find out more about this great charity at www.traid.org.uk
UNWANTED ITEMS
If you have any other clean, unwanted items
in good condition including furniture and
electrical goods, please let the site team know
and they will arrange for them to be collected by the British
Heart Foundation. The British Hear Foundation plays a leading
role in the fight against disease of the heart and circulation so
it is no longer a major cause of disability and premature death.
The British Heart Foundation is a fantastic charity well worth
supporting, to find out more visit www.bhf.org.uk
COMMUNITY
AMBASSADORS
AT CRM STUDENTS WE
WANT YOU TO FEEL SAFE
AND SECURE AT ALL TIMES
- BUT WE ALSO KNOW YOU
SOMETIMES JUST NEED
SOMEONE TO HELP, WHETHER
IT BE YOU’VE BURNT YOUR
TOAST OR LOST YOUR KEY.
Our Community Ambassadors are there to support
the community to ensure that you have the best
time possible throughout your stay with us. They
not only assist with the day to day life of the site
but they also help with organising events, working
with the university community and delivering
feedback from our regular ‘questions of the week’,
to ensure you always have someone to speak to
and support you in living in a friendly, responsive
environment.
Community Ambassadors, along with the
Accommodation team, are here to ultimately
ensure that your safety and security are kept at
all times:
12
FIRST, SOME GENERAL SAFETY TIPS...
OUT-OF-HOURS SECURITY
èèAll gates to the site are self-closing. However please ensure
that these close and lock shut at all times
èèDon’t prop the doors open – including fire doors
èèAlways carry your keys and never give them to anyone else
èèBe aware of strangers on the premises – if you’re not sure who
someone is, ask them or alert the Accommodation Team
èèLock your door when you’re going out and keep it closed at
other times – even if you’re just nipping to the kitchen
èèIf you see anything suspicious, let the Accommodation Team
know as soon as possible
èèIf your room is at ground level, or easily accessible from the
ground, make sure your windows are shut before you go out.
All windows are on restrictors for your safety and must not be
tampered with.
Please call the Service 24 emergency number
to report any issues you are experiencing. The
call centre will be able to assist in directing
your call.
If you’re worried about the safety of any equipment
in your room or the communal areas, please contact
the Accommodation Team on 08443715662 or email
[email protected]. Please also take a look at
the ‘troubleshooting’ guide at the back of this book to help you
deal with minor problems.
FIRST AID
If you have an accident at Russell View, please report
it to the Accommodation Team (after calling an
ambulance if needed). The office keeps a first aid
box but it does not issue drugs of any description.
HEAT AND SMOKE DETECTORS
The kitchen and communal corridors are
equipped with heat and smoke detectors. Your
room is fitted with a smoke detector.
NOW THAT YOU’RE
SHARING A LIVING
SPACE WITH LOTS
OF PEOPLE, IT’S VITAL THAT
YOU KNOW HOW TO PREVENT
FIRE AND WHAT TO DO IF ONE
HAPPENS. PLEASE READ THE
INFORMATION BELOW – IT
OUTLINES GENERAL FIRE
PREVENTION, FIRE ALARMS AND
THE EVACUATION PROCEDURE.
IF YOU DISCOVER A FIRE,
PLEASE RAISE THE ALARM AND
EVACUATE THE AREA, CALL 999
AND ASSEMBLE AT THE FIRE
ASSEMBLY POINT.
FALSE ALARMS:
Most false alarms are caused by fire doors being
propped open when people are cooking or smoking.
This is a major inconvenience for everyone involved,
not least the fire services. Please always keep fire
doors closed. CRM Students issues a charge of £25 to
anyone who sets off a false alarm.
GENERAL FIRE PREVENTION:
èèWe have a stay put policy here at Russell View. The safest
place to be is in your room should you hear the fire alarm.
You have 1 hour of safety in your room with all windows
and doors closed. If there is a need to evacuate, you will be
advised on when to do this. The assembly point is outside
the Tennyson Building on Forest Road West (Opposite
Russell View Reception).
COMMUNITY AMBASSADORS ARE ALSO TRAINED FIRE WARDENS
BUT HERE ARE SOME HELPFUL HINTS AND TIPS FOR FIRE SAFETY
FOR YOUR TIME WITH US:
SMART ELECTRICS :
èèWe recommend your personal electrical items are PAT
tested by a qualified electrician
èèAlways follow instructions when using electrical equipment
èèMake sure electrical items are fitted with the right fuse
èèAlways switch off and unplug appliances not designed to
be left on
èèCheck electrical appliances for dangerous wiring, hot plugs
or scorching on plugs and sockets
èèDon’t overload sockets
èèOnly CE marked appliances can be used; if electrical
appliances are being bought from overseas, they must be
CE marked or cannot be used.
FIRE EXITS AND EVACUATION:
1. KNOW YOUR ESCAPE ROUTE AND EQUIPMENT
èèWhen you arrive in your new room make sure you know
where the nearest fire exit is
èèRead the fire notices dotted around the building
èèMake sure you know where the evacuation assembly
point is – located outside the Tennyson Building (opposite
reception)
èèOnly use fire-fighting equipment if you are trained and it is
safe to do so, do not put yourself in danger.
2. KEEP ACCESS AND FIRE EXITS CLEAR
èèIf you notice any obstruction to fire exits, please let the
site office know
èèBikes must not be kept in your room or in the way of an
escape route.
3. KNOW WHAT TO DO IF A FIRE ALARM SOUNDS
èèStay in your bedroom until notified by the Fire Marshall
to evacuate
èèDo not attempt to re-enter the building until the
Accommodation Manager or fire brigade have given you
permission to do so.
13
CLEAN LIVING
CLEANING IS LIKELY TO BE LOW
ON YOUR LIST OF PRIORITIES
WHILE AT UNIVERSITY BUT IT
MAKES SENSE TO KEEP ON
TOP OF THINGS (AS WE SAID
EARLIER - IT HELPS YOU AVOID
A CHARGE AND KEEPS YOU
HEALTHY!) A FEW MINUTES IS
ALL IT TAKES:
THE KITCHEN
Everyone in your property is responsible for
keeping the kitchen and communal areas clean.
You’ll be warned if the kitchen in your property
is unacceptably dirty and if the situation doesn’t improve, your
property will be issued a charge. Why not use our community
cleaning rota with everyone?
YOUR ROOM
It’s up to you to keep your room clean. They’ll
be checked every so often (don’t worry, you’ll
be notified in advance!) to ensure they comply
with health and safety regulations. We don’t expect your rooms
to rival the Ritz, but we do expect order and cleanliness. If not,
you’ll be given 24 hours to clean up or risk a charge.
BASIC CLEAN LIVING GUIDELINES
èèPlease don’t use abrasive cleaning products as they can
damage surfaces.
èèFor obvious reasons, please don’t use hair/clothes dye in
the bathroom.
èèDo not put any pictures or posters on your walls, please
use the pin board provided – damage to walls will incur
a charge.

HEALTHY &
HAPPY
MOVING AWAY FROM HOME;
PRESSURE TO MAKE NEW
FRIENDS; MEETING DEADLINES
– THEY CAN ALL TAKE THEIR
TOLL. BUT DON’T WORRY –
WE’RE HERE TO HELP YOU
STAY HAPPY AND HEALTHY
WITH USEFUL HINTS, TIPS AND
TELEPHONE NUMBERS.
FEELING UNDER THE WEATHER?
If you’re unwell you can get an appointment
with a doctor or nurse at your university’s
health centre. Please ensure that you only call
emergency services when it is life threatening - usually you are
able to get a doctor’s appointment on the same day or within
a week. Make sure you register with your university’s health
centre when you arrive at university. Hopefully you won’t ever
need an appointment but should you need one it makes life a
lot easier when you are registered.
We also know how easy it can be to slip into less than healthy
routines whilst studying. We want you to make sure that you
look after yourself to ensure you do your very best. A few tips
below for keeping yourself in tip top condition:
SOCIALISING
We know that sometimes you can be bombarded with nights
out, events and things to do but try to make sure that you find
time for yourself!
TIRED
Too much or too little sleep can get you run down or not
performing at your best, try to get 8 hours straight through a
couple of times a week at least. Get to know your limitations
and don’t be afraid to say so- you will be surprised at how
many people feel the same.
UNIQUE
Remember even though everyone is a student at university it
doesn’t necessary mean everyone’s the same. We along with
the university treat everyone as an individual and celebrate the
range of students that we have living with us!
DEBT
It can be tough managing your finances at university (and
after!) but we are hear for you to speak to if you are concerned
about paying your rent. We release all payment dates when you
get your tenancy agreement and we ensure that we keep you
updated in advance. If our payment dates don’t directly match
loan dates we always try to reach a solution for you. We do
however follow a strict arrears procedure so do let us know as
soon as possible if you are experiencing financial worries.
EXERCISE
Whilst it can be easy to eat, sleep, study, repeat - it’s important
to ensure that you get regular exercise. Whether that be
through joining a university sports club, gym or walking
instead of the bus a few times a week. It’s really surprising
what a difference it will make to your general well being.
NUTRITION
As tempting as it is to have kebabs or pizza most nights, it’s really
important to try and have a healthy diet. Remember there are a
lot of ways that a healthy diet can enhance your brain power! For
example - fish is a great source of essential fatty acids such as DHA
(enhances learning ability and mental development.)
17
TIPPLE
We know drinking can sometimes be a big part of university
life but we know that it is not part of everyone’s life. Always
ensure that you drink responsibly and stay safe. Also
remember that not everyone drinks, so we ask that you respect
those that don’t.
STUDIES
The whole reason you come to university is to leave with the
best degree possible and we want to ensure that we support
you through this.
FOR OUT-OF-HOURS HEALTH ADVICE
Call the NHS Direct helpline on 111 or visit
WWW.STUDENTHEALTH.CO.UK – it’s a helpful online resource
but always get advice in person from a medical professional if
you’re worried about anything.
PROBLEMS WITH A FLAT MATE?
If you’re unhappy about the behaviour
of another resident in your flat or on the
site- please come and speak to us or your
Community Ambassador. If you don’t feel comfortable
speaking to us directly then please ensure that you write your
concerns to the Site Manager in an e-mail. Noise complaints
can be reported to the Community Ambassador or, for more
serious ones, you are entitled to report them directly to the
Environmental Health Department (however this is rarely
required!) – see the useful numbers section for details. If you
do contact the Environmental Health Department make sure
that you keep us in the loop. We can then work together to
ensure that we resolve any concerns that you may have.
STUDENT MINDS

student mental health charity Student Minds.

health by training and supporting students to equip them
to bring about positive change on their campuses through

– HERE’S EVERYTHING YOU
NEED TO KNOW…
We hope you enjoy your time at Russell View
and choose to stay here. However, you may
wish – for a variety of reasons – to move rooms
or leave Russell View. In all cases you should
discuss your situation with a member of the
Accommodation Team first. All moves within or
out of Russell View are at the management’s
discretion.
MOVING TO A VACANT ROOM
You’ll need to complete some paperwork and
sign a new contract. There’s a £50 fee to cover
admin costs.
SWAPPING ROOMS
You and the person you’re swapping with need
to go to the Accommodation Office to sign
the paperwork. You’ll both need to sign new
contracts and each pay a £50 admin fee.
MOVING OUT PREMATURELY
You’ll need to find an appropriate tenant to move
into your room and both of you will need to go to
the Accommodation Office to sign the paperwork.
Your replacement tenant will need to pay a booking fee and sign
a tenancy contract. You’ll need to pay a £50 admin fee.
WITHDRAWING FROM YOUR COURSE
Tell the Accommodation Team in good time and
provide written confirmation from your Tutor
or course Administration Officer, indicating
your last date of attendance. You’ll need to find an appropriate
tenant to move into your room and both of you will need to
go to the Accommodation Office to sign the paperwork. Your
replacement tenant will need to pay a booking fee and sign a
tenancy contract. You’ll need to pay a £50 admin fee.
MOVING OUT AT THE END OF YOUR
TENANCY
As a condition of your contract, you’ll need to
book and attend a check-out inspection with the
Accommodation Team – and sign the report. If you don’t attend
the check-out inspection it will be very difficult to challenge
the inspection and any charges for damage and disposal of
refuse and any abandoned items. The check-out inspection
also lets us know where we should return your deposit – so it’s
in your interests to attend.
èèOn your last day, you must vacate your room by 12 noon.
èèPlease return all keys to the site office.
èèPlease make sure your room is clear of all your
possessions.
èèPlease make sure your room is clean before you leave –
you’ll be charged for cleaning if it’s not (see the back of
this guide for list of charges).
