Raft the World’s Best Whitewater
with Raft Masters
Your Colorado Whitewater Rafting Experts
N
o matter where the river takes them, in the end the
world’s top whitewater rafters always come back to
Colorado. Why? Because a Colorado whitewater rafting trip is an experience like no other. And with Raft Masters’
commitment to providing you with the best trip possible, it’s
one trip you’ll relive again and again.
Whitewater rafting in Colorado is some of the most exciting
and varied anywhere. From high atop the Continental Divide,
rivers flow out of Colorado in all directions, providing an abundant watershed, fantastic natural landscape and unique opportunities for Colorado whitewater rafting. This diverse terrain
and the multiple climate regions create an amazing array of
rafting opportunities, from white-knuckle whitewater rafting
action to calming and serene float trips.
Colorado whitewater rafting with Raft Masters
Surrounded by 13,000- to 14,000 foot peaks, the Arkansas
River flows south and eastward from the Rocky Mountains. Not
only is the Arkansas River the most popular Colorado whitewater rafting destination, it’s also the most popular rafting river
in the world, with over 250,000 visitors in 2012. Clear Creek,
which flows east from the Continental Divide, is nestled in an
historic mining valley, providing a totally different whitewater rafting adventure. Colorado whitewater rafting in this area
provides visitors with a wilderness experience that stays with
you forever. Regardless of which trip you choose, though, with
Raft Masters your Colorado whitewater rafting experience is
one you’ll never forget.
At Raft Masters, Colorado whitewater rafting trips are available from March through October. Water levels fluctuate
8 • Ritz Hospitality Magazine
throughout this period, so depending on what type of experience you’re looking for, you should schedule accordingly. The
friendly staff at Raft Masters will help you choose the right
trip.
Do you want the biggest waves and wettest rides? Then late
May through June is your best rafting times, when water levels
are at their peak. Temperatures at this time are temperate, but
can be unpredictable, which is part of what makes Colorado
whitewater rafting so much fun. But don’t worry; Raft Masters
provides all the necessary rafting gear at no extra cost.
July and August are usually warm and dry, and the whitewater
has leveled off quite a bit. Colorado whitewater rafting trips
during this time are particularly interesting due to the technical
challenge of rafting lower flows, which increases the difficulty
of navigating the rapids. However, with their excellent guides
and state-of-the-art equipment, Raft Masters has an unparalleled dedication to your safety, comfort and enjoyment.
July is also the busiest month of the Colorado whitewater rafting season. Weekdays are generally less busy than weekends,
but Raft Masters NEVER charges an additional fee for weekend whitewater rafting trips. That’s just one more reason Raft
Masters should be the only name you think of when you think
of Colorado whitewater rafting.
Colorado whitewater rafting is recognized as some of the
world’s best rafting. Guests from around the globe come to
this great state to experience the unmatched thrill of Colorado
whitewater rafting; over 250,000 visited in 2012 alone.
Ironically, the majority of people who experience Colorado
whitewater rafting aren’t from Colorado. Perhaps this is because, as often happens when you live someplace so beautiful,
you tend to take it for granted. As Colorado residents, however,
the staff at Raft Masters has an unique opportunity to see some
of the most unique places on Earth by floating or rafting the
amazing Colorado whitewater that is practically right outside
their back door. Rafting in Colorado with Raft Masters is an
opportunity to experience the best that Colorado whitewater
rafting has to offer, one you should take advantage of again
and again and again.
Whether you’re a first-time visitor to Colorado, or a lifelong
resident, it’s time to get out - to the heart of it all – and experience firsthand the excitement and one-of-a-kind thrills of
Colorado whitewater rafting. For more information, call Raft
Masters at 800-568-7238, or visit their website at www.RaftRH

to the renovated 1899 high school building. You will be greeted by a friendly admissions assistant. View a model of the
railroad located in Leadville, Colorado
during the mining days. Walk through
the Hard Rock Mine, a reconstruction
of a blacksmith’s shop and mine complete with authentic sounds. Exit into
the Gold Rush room, where you can
find fascinating information about gold
rushes in your state, and a 24-oz. gold
nugget!
The museum contains five levels of
shining crystals, mining history, photographs, and mining equipment. Three
mine reconstructions, a full-size molybdenum car, and a Gift Gallery featuring
books, gold panning kits, onyx chess
sets, and jewelry mean there is something for everyone to see in the National
Mining Museum. Hold your meeting or
wedding reception in one of the spacious
Convention Center meeting rooms or
ballroom. From May through September, visit the Matchless Mine, a famous
silver mine purchased by Horace Tabor
in the 1879, and the cabin where Baby
Doe Tabor lived for 35 years in her con-
tinual search for more silver.
Since its incorporation in 1977, and
following its national charter signed by
President Reagan in 1988, the National
Mining Museum has often been the location of the Induction Banquet, held
annually to install people instrumental
to the development of the mining indus-
try into the Hall of Fame. The Matchless
Summer Series is a round of costumed
interpreters, knowledgeable lecturers,
and exciting tours that engage people
with Leadville and mining. Leadville is
also home to Boom Days, a rip-roaring
adventure that recreates the excitement
of the Wild West.
The National Mining Museum is located at 120 W. 9th Street in Leadville,
Colorado. It is within walking distance
of restaurants, antique shops, and historical points of interest. In the summer,
hiking and mountain biking are available for outdoors adventurers, and in the
winter, ice skating and sledding. Leadville is also a short drive away from ski
resorts like Copper Mountain, Vail, Aspen, and Breckenridge.
The Museum is open year round, 9-5
summer hours, and 11-6 winter hours.
Admission: $7 Adults, $3 Children;
AAA, Senior, and Group discounts available. Info: 719-486-1229, mininghalloffame.org. The National Mining Museum
is a private non-profit 501(c)3 organization. Funding comes from memberships,
admissions, grants, donation, events, and
facility rentals.

The Museum At Warm Springs
“Feel the Spirit”
T
he award-winning Museum At
Warm Springs was created to
preserve the history and traditions of the Confederated Tribes of the
Warm Springs Reservation of Oregon.
The Museum is arranged to resemble a
traditional encampment among the cottonwoods along Shitike Creek in the
Deschutes River Canyon. The Museum
is intended to be a place in harmony
with the natural environment.
Our newest feature is the Twanat Trail.
The Trail meanders along Shitike Creek
and features exquisite views and educational kiosks that relate the natural
history and tell about the animals, fish,
birds, and plants of the Museum’s site.
Visitors can picnic near the towering
cottonwoods and wild roses along the
Trail....and children can run and play
on our wide west field. The Museum
itself is built of natural materials that
reflect the surroundings and traditions
of the Tribes. Native stone, heavy timber and brick are all finely detailed to
demonstrate the integration of art into
everyday life. Meaningful symbols that
are used by the Tribes, such as the drum,
dance costume bustles and patterns from
Klickitat baskets are also integrated as
art form in the building design.
Summer weekends at The Museum
visitors can meet Warm Springs master
artists who demonstrate their arts and
crafts. This year’s summer exhibit is
“Warm Springs Beaded Tapestries” and
runs from June 21 to September 16. This
beautiful exhibit features beaded clothing, dance regalia, and accessories such
as beaded bags and jewelry from The
Museum’s Collections. August 11 is
the date of The Museum’s 17th Annual
Huckleberry Harvest dinner and auction.
Funds raised support The Museum’s mission to preserve, advance, and share the
knowledge of the Confederated Tribes
of Warm Springs. October is members’
appreciation month at The Museum. In
November The Museum hosts a Native
American heritage marketplace with local artisans selling their authentic jewwww.ritzhospitalitymag.com
elry, handicrafts, and weavings.
The Museum’s Gift Shop features
unique locally made, handcrafted items
and is the local distributor for Pendleton
Woolen Mills blankets, clothing and accessories. Huckleberry products ranging
from coffee to candy and including wonderful lotions and soaps are a particular
favorite with visitors. The Gift Shop can
prepare made-to-order gift baskets for
the Holidays and for your gift-giving
pleasure.

Through Heavan’s Gate
By Gary Turnbek
T
he evening of July 19,1805, was
a hot one in the wilderness that
would later become Montana.
On the Missouri River, not far from
present day Helena, the hardy members
of the Lewis and Clark expedition toiled
to move upstream. Rock embankments
made towing from shore impossible, and
the deep channel forced the men to row
rather than pole their boats forward.
Suddenly, there loomed before them
towering rock formations unlike any
they had ever seen. From both sides
of the river, limestone cliffs rose to a
spectacular height of 1200 feet. “In
many places,” wrote Meriwether Lewis, “the rocks seem ready to tumble on
us.” At each bend in the waterway,
great stone walls seemed to block
passage, only to open like gentle giant gates as the expedition drew near.
In his journal, Meriwether wrote: “I

shall call this place: “GATES OF THE
MOUNTAINS”.
The name stuck, and for nearly two
centuries travelers have ventured
down this stretch of the Missouri to
marvel at its natural wonders. Today,
most visitors enjoy the beauty of the
Gates of the Mountains from aboard
one of three tour boats – the”Pirogue”
(named after the boats used by the Expedition, pictured above), the “Sacajawea” (named after the only women
and indigenous person on the Expedition), and the “Hilger Rose” (named
after Nicholas Hilger, who began the
tours in 1886 on a vessel named “Rose
of Helena”).
The 105-minute cruise starts at our
marina, just 3 miles off Interstate 15
in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains between Helena and Great Falls,
Montana. Aboard a comfortable openair boat (covered in case of rain),
you’ll glide through magnificent
country Meriwether Lewis would still
recognize if he could return.
Great towering walls of limestone
still stand guard over the river. Bighorn sheep and Mountain Goats scamper in the rocks high above the water.
Ospreys, eagles (bald and golden),
vultures and falcons (peregrine and
prairie) still soar on the updrafts. The
canyon is also home to otters, deer,
squirrels, ermine, beaver, mountain
lions, black bears and other wild creatures. The life list for bird species is
over 120 right now.
At Meriwether Picnic Area, the boat
stops for 15 minutes of leg stretching. If you like, you may temporarily
abandon the tour here and complete
the trip on a later boat. You can bring
a picnic and the whole family will enjoy a day out next to the Gates of the
Mountains Wilderness Area and the
Missouri River. Swimming, fishing,
and hiking can be engaged in.
From the picnic area you can hike to
Mann Gulch, the site of the raging forest fire that killed 13 smokejumpers
50 years ago. There will be a special
gathering for the 50th anniversary this
summer around August 5, 1999. This
tragedy was the main subject matter
of Norman Maclean’s book “Young
Men and Fire”. The story of Mann
gulch is one of the more interesting
stories told by the guide and pilot.
Between Meriwether Picnic and
Mann Gulch the pilot will hug the
shoreline to give you a look at Indian
pictographs painted on the rock wall.
Proof that indigenous people lived
here long before Meriwether named
it the Gates of the Mountains.
The tour’s main attraction, though,
is the inexhaustible scenery – wooded
slopes, rugged rock formations, and
the placid beauty of the timeless Missouri.

Buffalo Bill Center of the West
T
here’s a big celebration going on
at the Buffalo Bill Center of the
West* in Cody, Wyoming—a
celebration of the Spirit of the American
West!
Whether you have a couple of hours,
or a day or two, a visit to the Buffalo
Bill Center of the West is guaranteed to
be the biggest and best part of your trip
out West.
It takes a museum as big as the Buffalo
Bill Museum to recount the tales of the
legendary showman William F. “Buffalo
Bill” Cody and the West he loved.
And that’s just the beginning.
It takes a gallery as big as the Whitney
Gallery of Western Art to capture the
masterworks of artists who chronicled
the action-packed sights and sounds of
the American West.
It takes a place as big as the Plains Indian Museum to present the history of
the Northern Plains tribes where native
voices and beautiful objects tell the stories of Plains Indian peoples.
Whether cowboy or trapper, settler or
Native American—the story of the American West is incomplete without the firearm. Housing the most comprehensive
collection of American firearms in the
world, it takes a space as big as the Cody
Firearms Museum to tell that story.
And, it takes a setting as big as the
Draper Museum of Natural History to
portray the nature and science of the
Yellowstone area. Here, visitors become
explorers—even coming face-to-face
with the live birds of prey of the Greater
Yellowstone Raptor Experience.
Celebrating the Spirit of the American
West in a big way is what we do every
day at the Buffalo Bill Center of the
West.* Our entire facility—plus research
library, store, and eatery—are all in one
location for one admission price. Block
out an hour or a day to celebrate with us!

Windmill Inns’ Top-Notch Services, Unique
Amenities Generate Rave Reviews from Guests
Y
ou know you’re doing something right when guests say
their only disappointment is
not finding your hotels everywhere they
travel.
The Scottsdale-based group of six
hotels—three in Roseburg, Ashland,
and Medford, Ore., and three in Surprise/Sun City, Chandler, and Tucson,
Ariz.—Is earning rave reviews from
guests who have experienced Windmill
Inns & Suites’ spotless guestrooms and
public areas, top-notch service and
highly affordable rates. Guest satisfaction is so high that many patrons take
the time to not only fill out comment
cards, but to write glowingly of their
experience.
“Our hallmark has always been great
rates; sincere, friendly service; and
roomy, clean accommodations,” said
Windmill Inns & Suites President and
C.E.O John Cauvin, a 30-year hotel veteran who in 1984 purchased the thenstruggling Windmill Inns in Medford
and Roseburg and within a year turned
them into highly successful, profitable
properties—and has since built four
more.
“It’s incredibly satisfying to have people tell us personally, in the lobby or at
the front desk, that they’ve enjoyed their
stay,” Cauvin said. “But when they take
the time to write to us about how much
they enjoyed the experience... well,
that’s very special and meaningful to
us. It tells us that all the hard work we
put into delivering great service, clean
accommodations and desired amenities—all at affordable rates—is being
rewarded.”
At Windmill Inns, those amenities include free Continental breakfast, free
local calls (and free access to longdistance calls), free daily newspapers
for each guest, and free parking. Cauvin
points out that some of these amenities
are also offered at other hotels, so he’s
implemented an amenity program that
goes above and beyond the typical hotel
offerings.
For example, all five Windmill Inns
& Suites allow pets to stay—for free;
all make bicycles available for free;
all make available free lending libraries and free games for children; and all
offer high-speed Internet access—for
free—as well as access to free help-desk
assistance, should the need arise, via
a toll-free phone number. And there’s
even a bonus included in the free Continental breakfast—guests can even make
their own waffles!
“We’ve always tried to do things
that set us apart from our competitors
and provide more satisfaction for our
guests,” Cauvin said. “That’s been our
philosophy for more than 20 years, and
we’ve instilled it in our staff culture and
emphasized it in our ongoing staff-training programs. We believe in it thoroughly, and that is why we’re proud to offer
guests our unique, 110 percent guaranRH
tee of satisfaction.”

Welcome To Ontario, Oregon
Home of “America’s Global Village Festival”
O
ntario, Oregon is nestled on the
lush banks of the Snake River
and is proud to be the first Oregon city you encounter when traveling
west from the Idaho border. Once you
enter the uniquely rugged landscape
of the Treasure Valley, you will come
to understand why many people never
want to leave. Those who choose to live
here understand the meaning and importance of a quality, family oriented lifestyle. Thus, the community reflects the
energy, distinction, and diversity of its
surrounding geography and residents.
And speaking of diversity, this year
the Ontario Chamber of Commerce
will host the 13th annual America’s
Global Village Festival in Lions Park
on June 1st – the first Saturday in June.
The festivities begin at 10:00 a.m.
with a multicultural parade through
the park followed by a flag ceremony.
The Festival celebrates the authentic
cultural villages of African, Basque,
German, Hawaiian, Japanese, Mexican, Pioneer, Scottish and Native
American cultures. Each village features food, arts and crafts, cultural
demonstrations and free youth activities. The main stage will highlight cultural entertainment throughout the day.
Upon entering the park for the Festival, visitors will be given a souvenir
passport. With each visit to the villages, the passport will be stamped.
When children have a full passport, they
will receive a free prize. Adults who
turn in a complete survey will have a
chance to win one of two $50 gas cards.
While Ontario is the kind of laid-back
town you dream about when you want
to get away from the hectic schedule of
a busy, big city lifestyle, it also boasts
a myriad of recreational activities for
all ages, interests and skill levels within driving distance from its downtown
area. Here you can enjoy mountain
biking, hiking, golfing, camping, sport
fishing, bird watching, kayaking, river
rafting, horseback riding and much
more. Ontario is situated only two hours
from four separate ski resorts, including the world renowned Tamarack Ski
Resort in Cascade, Idaho. You can not
only downhill ski to your heart’s content, but also snowmobile, cross country ski and ice skate as well. There
are also 61 acres of lush parks within
the city if you’re looking for a place
to just relax and enjoy the landscape.
Ontario is a town where you will find
the people are genuine, authentic, friendly, and down to earth. It is a town with
a fascinating history, rich traditions, and
a diverse population. It is also a place
filled with things to do, places to see,
and four distinct and beautiful seasons,
so any time you choose to visit will be
the perfect time. Visit us on our website

Hidden Wine Industry Emerging into its Own
I
daho’s famous potatoes have had
to start sharing the limelight with
another great agricultural product: grapes. Tucked between the Rocky
Mountains and the Snake River lies a
perfect climate for growing grapes and
creating extraordinary award-winning
wines. The climate is moderate with
limited precipitation, and a consistent
growing season adds complexity and
uniqueness to the grapes. Idaho grows
and produces vinifera wine grape varieties such as Syrah and Viognier, as well
as classic varieties including Merlot,
Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and
Riesling.
Officially designated in April 2007,
the Snake River Valley Appellation is
the first registered AVA (American Viticulture Area) for the state. The 8,263
square miles of AVA stretch east to Twin
Falls, west to Oregon, and houses 12
Idaho counties in-between. Vintners,
www.ritzhospitalitymag.com
viticulturists, soil experts and geologists
insist that Idaho’s high desert terrain
(volcanic soil, hot days and cool nights)
create the perfect environment to grow
grape vines.
Idaho has more than doubled the number of wineries in the last 10 years to
over 50! In addition, the state has added
acreage, now boasting 56 vineyards
and 1,600 acres planted. In the past 12
months alone there were four new wineries added in Idaho.
The Idaho Wine Commission created a
new event, “UnWined at the Movies,”
that will be held on March 27, 2013
from 5-9pm at the Egyptian Theater in
downtown Boise. Nine Idaho wineries
will be present, each with a variety of
wines to try. In addition, 3 Girls Catering will be providing food to complement the wines. The feature film, Bottle
Shock, is the award-winning story of the
early days of California wine making.
The film begins at 6:30pm and patrons
are able to refresh their glasses throughout the movie.
In June of 2012, the Idaho Wine Commission hosted another successful Savor Idaho: Idaho’s Premier Wine &
Food Event. In addition to the beautiful
scenery at the Idaho Botanical Garden,
the event included 27 Idaho wineries,
17 restaurants, nine exhibitors and 18
sponsors. Guests could sample a new
item at each station, and both beginners and expert wine drinkers had a
fantastic time. Around 900 consumers
sipped great wine and indulged in delicious local food. With this tremendous
success you can bet that many are saving the date for Savor Idaho 2013 on
June 9th.
The Idaho wine industry is on the rise,
having all the perfect elements for a
great weekend getaway. For more information, visit www.idahowines.org. RH

Capture that College Town Spirit!
H
ome of Washington State University and the National Lentil
Festival, Pullman Washington
is a wonderful community in which to
spend time. Pullman lies in the heart of
an area known as The Palouse, made
famous by its gently rolling, dune-like
hills of some of the most fertile soil in
the country. The climate is perfect for
growing crops of wheat, barley, peas
and lentils. Endless undulating fields
make this a favorite stop for photographers. Whether a quaint, round barn
nestled in a beautiful valley or ever expanding horizons as seen from the top
a butte, this unusual geography changes
season to season, minute by minute. Fall
is a favorite time to capture amber harvest hues and the geometric patterns left
by the combines.
A visit to WSU is brimming with arts
and culture. Be sure and stop by Ferdi-
nand’s Dairy Bar. Here you can watch
cheese and ice cream being made and
sample some of their delicious products.
Be sure to take home some award winning Cougar Gold Cheese! Check out
the Grizzly Bear Research Center, the
only one of its’ kind in the country and
see wildlife up close. Take in some PAC
12 Athletics and catch the Cougs in action. Fall in Pullman means football!
Biking on the Palouse could mean
mountain biking or touring the 35 miles
of paved trails in and around Pullman,
including the Downtown Riverwalk.
And if that isn’t enough, hit the golf
course and finish out your day tasting
locally made wine and beer. Pullman
boasts two local wineries and two local breweries. Great accommodations,
restaurants, galleries and lovely shops
round out your visit.

Aviation Heritage Museum
Coffeyville's Aviation Heritage Museum is dedicated to early aviation and
pioneer pilots of the area, the Aviation
Heritage Museum features memorabilia from the Coffeyville Air Base, a
Funk airplane and Breezy, owned by
Joe Funk and donated to the museum,
plus many other displays. Located in
Pfister Park, the Aviation Heritage Museum is housed in a 1930's era hangar
that was used when the Big Hill Airport
was in operation from 1933 to 1960.
The airport hangar was constructed in
1933 as a Works Progress Administration project.
The Sandhills Boot Company
Cody, Nebraska
Dalton Defenders Museum
The Museum, owned and operated by
the non-profit Coffeyville Historical
Society, is the realization of a dream of
many Coffeyville citizens who understood the importance of collecting items
not only relating to the Dalton Raid but
also relating to early-day life in this
area. In the Museum, which is just east
of the Plaza area, are collections of the
following:
• Mementos of early-day Coffeyville.
• Mementos of Wendell Willkie– who
lived and taught school in Coffeyville.
• Mementos of Walter Johnson—who
lived in Coffeyville during the
off-season.
• Mementos of the Dalton Raid
(including recently located court
records of Emmett’s trial).
Midland Theater
Built in the 1928, the historic Midland
Theater, along with the Alamo building to the west, is currently undergoing
restoration. The mission of the Midland Restoration Project is to preserve
and restore the Midland Theater and
the Alamo Building as a multipurpose
facility to accommodate public performances, events and activities. The complex will also provide a focal point for
further economic development in and
revitalization of the downtown core of
Coffeyville.
Perkins Building
The Perkins Building, AKA The Condon Bank, is one of two banks that the
infamous Dalton Gang attempted to rob
in 1892. The Perkins Building is the most
recognizable building in Coffeyville.
It was built in 1890 and became home
of the Condon Bank, plus other offices
and retail stores. Luther Perkins used
the design of a similar structure built
in Time Square in New York. The “Flat
Iron Building” design referred to its unusual shape and the use of metal on the
fascia of the building. Its unique wedge
shape, which conformed to the tapering
of the plaza block, and its placement at
the junction of three streets with a vista
in five directions, made it a focal point
of town.

Discover Powell, Wyoming
F
ounded in 1909, the community
of Powell is twenty miles south
of the Wyoming-Montana border in the heart of the Big Horn Basin,
our rural town of about 6,000 celebrated
its 100th birthday in 2009.
Beginning in 1904, the Shoshone
Reclamation Project, brought an influx
of hopeful homesteaders to the Basin.
Originally named Camp Coulter, Powell became a center for business in the
region. Just a few miles north is the Elk
Basin Oil Field, also one of the oldest in
the state. Agriculture and the oil industry provide many of the area jobs. In addition, Powell Valley Healthcare, Park
County School District #1, Northwest
College, and a wide variety of down-
town businesses keep the unemployment rate below the national average.
Powell has three elementary schools,
a middle school, and a high school.
Northwest College, a fully accredited
two-year college, enrolls more than
2000 students annually.
There are recreational opportunities for
all-an 18-hole community golf course,
six tennis courts, an aquatic center, soccer
fields, baseball fields, and softball fields.
Paved pedestrian trails, bicycle routes,
and thirteen parks are also available for
all to enjoy. In addition, The Powell Valley Chamber of Commerce can help you
learn more about the agriculture industry
in and around Powell by customizing a
tour for you or your group. Learn more
about area crops, livestock production,
irrigation systems and more from area
farmers and ranchers.
The Greater Basin also provides ample
opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts.
Hunting fishing, hiking, camping, boating and snowmobiling are just a few of
the activities only a short driving distance from Powell.
Powell is located one and a half hours
away from two entrances to Yellowstone
Park – the East Gate west of Cody and
the Northeast Entrance near Cooke City,
Montana.
Explore Powell and the Bighorn Basin!
