CARDIOVASCULAR FELLOWSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA 2015-2016 Training Sites OU Medical Center – Presbyterian Tower Oklahoma City VA Medical Center The VA Medical Center in Oklahoma City serves a veteran population of more than 225,000. Fellows rotate through two training site hospitals: 1. OU Medical Center (www.oumedicine.com) 2. Oklahoma City VA Medical Center (www.oklahoma.va.gov) Both hospitals are geographically adjacent and connected by a skywalk. On average fellows spend 50% of their time rotating through each site. Both OU Medical Center and DVA Medical Center offer a comprehensive spectrum of cardiovascular services including: • • • • • • • • • Acute coronary care In-house primary PCI for ST Elevation MI Cardiac catheterization laboratories Coronary and peripheral interventions Echocardiography laboratories (including TEE and stress echocardiography) Nuclear Cardiology services Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices (CIEDs- pacemakers, ICD, CRT) Cardiothoracic surgery Arrhythmia Ablation (only at OUMC) Located next to OU Children's Physicians, the Oklahoma City VA Medical Center provides medical care to eligible veterans and also serves as a teaching hospital for the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. Over 300 University residents, interns, and students are trained at the Oklahoma City VA Medical Center each year. In addition to training future medical doctors, there are also affiliations the College of Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy and others programs at the OU Health Sciences Center. This program allowed and encouraged me to grow in a manner that suited my career goals and aspirations. I found the faculty to be very friendly and they were always available whenever I needed any type of professional or personal guidance. If I were to do this all over again, OU would still be my choice for fellowship training.” – Siddharth Wayangankar MD, Interventional Fellow, Cleveland Clinic “OU provided me with a world class education that prepared me to go into practice confident in my knowledge and skills. I could not have asked for a better place to train.” – Weston Hickey MD, Interventional Cardiologist in private practice, Houston TX “The OU Cardiology Fellowship training is well rounded and prepared me extremely well for private practice. As a Cardiology Fellow at OU, I performed a high volume of procedures, worked very closely with world renowned physicians in Electrophysiology, Echocardiography, and General Cardiology, and was given plenty of autonomy to grow as a Fellow. This well-rounded program allows you to practice in almost any setting, and I would strongly recommend it to any applicant considering Cardiology as a career.” – George Madden, General Cardiologist in private practice, OKC, OK “A clear strength of the cardiology fellowship at OU is the progressive autonomy of both the invasive and non-invasive imaging rotations seen from year one to year three, the rotations that are tailored to each career path, and the cutting-edge research opportunities. For me, the early electrophysiology rotations helped me solidify my career choice.” – Paul Garabelli, Electrophysiologist, OU Physicians, OKC, OK Current Fellows 2015-2016 Year of Training Fellow Name Third year Third year Third year Third year Matthew Cozart Michael Koehler Bhavin Patel Purvi Parwani Second year Christel Cuevas Second year Second year Second year First year Fahmi Farah Steve Hamilton Daniel Sohinki Elizabeth Mora Garzon First year First year First year Blake Morris Ethan Munzinger Ali Yousif Medical School University of Arkansas University of Oklahoma Medical College, Baroda, India B.J. This Pilot involves the administration of a competency based curriculum focused on cardiology to a selected group of IM residents accepted already to CV fellowship training during their third year of IM residency. In effect several ‘hybrid’ rotations during third of IM residency will offer credits for both IM and cardiology fellowship as part of the Pilot. Institutions participating in the IM-Cardiology Pilot are University of Oklahoma, Vanderbilt University, Indiana University and Mount Sinai New York-Icahn School of Medicine. Each site has one Pilot resident per year, beginning July 2014. The national Chair for this ABIM Pilot is Dr. C.A. Sivaram, fellowship program director at OU. Our Pilot residents/fellows at OU are: 1. Ethan Munzinger MD- Pilot Resident 2014/2015, CV Fellow 2015-2018 2.
