LRC Newsletter 7 - ABC Learning Resources Centre
Learning at the LRC Issue 7: April 2009 National Reading & Earth Week Special Edition The students and staff of the ABC celebrated Earth Week in a big way. During the week teachers ran a series of workshops aimed at helping our students to better understand the importance of taking care of our Earth. The workshops offered were: Working Out Carbon Footprints, Creating Garbage Book Covers, Creating an Earth Week Display in the LRC, Making Recycled Paper, Creating Plastic Bottle Eco-blocks and Planting a Tree on the LRC Lawn. Students from various grades participated in the activities. Carbon Footprint: Work out your carbon footprint at Carbon Control. Letʼs Make Our Own Building Materials! Plastic bottle ecoblocks are an efficient solution for reusing plastic non-biodegradable trash, to create low cost/high quality construction materials. On Thursday April 23rd the students of the ABC got to create their very own eco-blocks on the steps outside the LRC. Making Recycled Paper On Thursday 23rd of April, Staff members guided students through the process of making recycled paper. The kids asked for an encore the following week in the hopes of making a recycled paper mural. Planting a Tree by the LRC Garbage Book Covers With the help of the Art Department, students learned how to reuse different materials to make interesting covers for their books and boxes. Creating Displays The Library staff put together several displays to mark the occasion. On Friday the 24th of April, the students and Headmaster planted a new tree on the lawn in front of the LRC. This tree replaces a majestic Pepeto tree that once stood on the site. National Reading Week This same week El Salvador Celebrated National Reading Week. The focus this year was on two prominent Salvadoran authors, Claudia Lars and Salvador Salazar Salarrue. During this time, celebrations and activities took place all over the country. The ABC did its part by creating a display highlighting the authors, and promoting their works within the library and lessons. Check some of their work online!
