Loans account for more than half of all financial-aid dollars received by college students. Approximately six out of every 10 students who received a bachelor’s degree borrowed to pay at least some of their college expenses. Most students who borrowed to earn their degrees believe that student loans were crucial to their being able to pursue higher education. The largest source of loans for higher education, and the largest federally sponsored student-aid program, is the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP). Since the U.S. Congress established it in 1965, the FFELP has delivered more than $377 billion in aid to students and parents. FFELP loans offer several benefits. Interest rates typically are below the rates charged for other types of credit. FFELP loans also offer extremely flexible repayment terms. Nonetheless, like most debts, FFELP loans must be paid back with interest. There are two types of FFELP loans: Federal Stafford loans for students and Federal PLUS loans for parents. Maui County Employees FCU provides our members with access to the Stafford and Parent Plus loan programs. For more information, please stop by the Credit Union. STUDENT LOANS In addition to the Federal Stafford loan program, college bound students can also apply for a student loan with Maui County Employees FCU. Students must be members in order to apply. Highlights of the program include: INTEREST INTEREST ONLY ONLY PAYMENTS PAYMENTS WHILE WHILE IN IN SCHOOL SCHOOL 10 10 YEAR YEAR AMORTIZATION AMORTIZATION UNSECURED UNSECURED LINE-OF-CREDIT LINE-OF-CREDIT $5,000 $5,000 MAXIMUM MAXIMUM DISBURSEMENT DISBURSEMENT PER PER YEAR YEAR $20,000 $20,000 MAXIMUM MAXIMUM LINE-OF-CREDIT LINE-OF-CREDIT For more information, call the Loan Department at 244-7968, option 1.
