YOKOHAMA BAY SHERATON (3 Nights) (D) Day 13: Tue, Sept 05 – YOKOHAMA – DISEMBARK DIAMOND PRINCESS – TOKYO – HONOLULU. After disembarkation depart for a full day of touring. First visit Asakusa, in the center of Tokyo’s shitamachi (literally “low city”), one of Tokyo’s districts, where an atmosphere of the Tokyo of past decades survives. Asakusa’s main attraction is Sensoji, a very popular Buddhist temple built in the 7th century. The temple is approached via the Nakamise, a shopping street that has been providing temple visitors with a variety of traditional local snacks and tourist souvenirs for centuries. Today’s highlight will be a hands-on, Sushi-Making session, which will yield your delicious lunch. Ameyoko is a busy market street along the Yamanote Line tracks between Okachimachi and Ueno Stations. The name “Ameyoko” is a short form for “Ameya Yokocho” (candy store alley), as candies were traditionally sold there. Alternatively, “Ame” also stands for “America”, because a lot of American products used to be available there when the street was the site of a black market in the years following World War Two. Today, various products such as clothes, bags, cosmetics, fresh fish, dried food and spices are sold along Ameyoko. A stop will be made at an AEON Mall before going to the airport for the flight home. Depart Tokyo. Arrive Honolulu the same day. (B, L) Day 3: Sat, Aug 26 – YOKOHAMA – KAMAKURA – YOKOHAMA. After a sumptuous breakfast buffet, we will head south to Kamakura for a day of touring. Our first stop today is The Great Buddha of Kamakura (Kamakura Daibutsu). A bronze statue of Amida Buddha, which stands on the grounds of Kotokuin Temple. With a height of 13.35 meters, it is the second tallest bronze Buddha statue in Japan, surpassed only by the statue in Nara’s Todaiji Temple. Next we visit Hase Temple followed by Tsurugaoka Hachimangu which is dedicated to Hachiman, the patron god of the Minamoto family and of the samurai in general. Return to Yokohama. Walk to a nearby restaurant for dinner. (B, L, D) Day 4: Sun, Aug 27 – YOKOHAMA. Half-day sightseeing tour of Yokohama. We start our day visiting Sankeien – a spacious Japanese-style garden in southern Yokohama which exhibits a number of historic buildings from across Japan. There is a pond, small rivers, flowers and wonderful strolling trails that make you think you 072116 Tokyo (Yokohama)
