We will have some very special events and artists appearing this year. Tim Warfield, CPFJ Music Chairman, has booked the upcoming 2015 Spring Concert Series and Christian McBride will perform for us on March 1st at the Sheraton Harrisburg/Hershey with his Trio. (see the story on pages 4/5) This is one of the best touring groups in jazz right now and I really encourage you to make the effort to hear them - a “not to be missed” event!! We congratulate Christian on his 2015 Grammy winning performance as part of Chick Corea’s Trilogy CD - a triple CD set of live recordings from the tour with Chick, Brian Blade and Christian - we are lucky to have him appearing in Central PA! . The new Wyndridge Farm event facility in Dallastown (near York) will be the site of our 2nd Spring Concert on Sunday, April 12 . The featured artist is York, PA native Chris Bacas who will return home from NYC and bring along his touring group, Voyage West. We look forward to seeing and hearing Chris again in this exciting new venue. Wyndridge Farm has a retaurant/tasting room, distillery and brewery, so plan to come early and enjoy their full menu and drink offerings before or after the concerts. It’s a beautiful new property and we will host the concert in the renovated barn - there will also be two shows, one at 3pm & one at 6:30pm, so that those driving longer distances can do so in the daytime if they prefer. See the details in this issue.... . We will host the legendary vibraphonist Steve Nelson’s Quartet on May 31 at Rose Lehrman Arts Center at Harrisburg Area Community Center. This exciting concert will close our Spring Series and we thank The Shearer Family Fund, R. Scott Shearer for funding this series for the fourth consecutive year. . Please look at page 8’s Membership Drive - we’re offering a grand prize drawing for $1,000 to renewing or new members and chances for current members who recruit new members as well. . If you would like to volunteer some time assisting at future CPFJ events, please contact our volunteer coordinator, Leslie Beamer, at [email protected] or (717) 790-9672. We will need volunteers for our upcoming concerts and promotional tasks. We also encourage local businesses and individuals to donate funds to underwrite CPFJ events. If you are interested, please contact the office at your convenience. . Check out the “Steady Gigs” & “One Time Only” pages in this issue - it is the most complete list of Central PA jazz events available. We hope you will get out often to support the establishments that are hosting live jazz and give a listen to our talented area jazz musicians there is a lot of great music happening right down the street and it will only continue to be there if there is an audience. Get out often and listen!! .. We hope to see you at these events. It’s a great place for musicians to meet and share ideas and it is always entertaining for the listeners. . Zimmerman 33 christian mcbride trio sheraton harrisburg / hershey ballroom march 1st 5 p.m. Join us as we kick off the 35th year of CPFJ with one of the most influential musicians in jazz today - bassist Christian McBride. He will bring his working Trio that features two formidable young musicians - pianist Christian Sands and drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr. Tickets are available on page 15 of this issue or you may purchase online at www.friendsofjazz .org or call the CPFJ office at 717-540-1010 We will present the Trio in the Ballroom of the Sheraton Harrisburg-Hershey, 4650 Lindle Road, Harrisburg, PA. All seating is general admission. Food and drink are available during the concert and there is ample free parking. Bassist extraodinaire, composer, arranger, educator, curator and administrator, Christian McBride, has been one of the most important and most omnipresent figures in the jazz world for 20 years. Sometimes hard to believe considering this man is just 41 years of age. Beginning in 1989, this Philadelphia-born bassist moved to New York City to further his classical studies at the Juilliard School, only to be snatched up by alto saxophonist, Bobby Watson. Since then, McBride's list of accomplishments have been nothing short of staggering. As a sideman in the jazz world alone, he's worked with the best of the very best - Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Rollins, J.J. Johnson, Ray Brown, Milt Jackson, McCoy Tyner, Roy Haynes, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Pat Metheny. In the R&B world, he's not only played with, but also arranged for Isaac Hayes, Chaka Khan, Natalie Cole, Lalah Hathaway, and the one and only Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown. In the pop/rock world, he's extensively collaborated with Sting, Carly Simon, Don Henley, and Bruce Hornsby. In the hip-hop/neo-soul world, he's collaborated with the Roots, D'Angelo, and Queen Latifah. In many other specialty projects, he's worked closely with opera legend Kathleen Battle, bass virtuoso Edgar Meyer, the Shanghai Quartet and the Sonus Quartet. . Away from the bass, Christian has become quite an astute and respected spokesperson for the music. In 1997, he spoke on former President Bill Clinton's town hall meeting "Racism in the Performing Arts". He has served as Artistic Director of the Jazz Aspen Snowmass Summer Sessions; co-director of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem; and 2nd Chair for Creative Chair for Jazz of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. . Since 2000, McBride has blazed a trail as a bandleader with the Christian McBride Band. He has released two critically acclaimed CD's with that first group and in 2009 was signed to the Mack Avenue Records label where he recorded his quintet CD "Christian McBride & Inside Straight" . His second release on the label was "Conversations with Christian" a recording of duets with McBride and some of his best friends and mentors - George Duke, Angelique Kidjo, Dr. Billy Taylor, Hank Jones, Chick Corea, Eddie Palmieri, Regina Carter, Ron Blake, Roy Hargrove, and Russell Malone. . In a stellar career that continues to showcase his remarkable talents as a consummate musician, bassist Christian reached another milestone with the 2011 release of The Good Feeling, his first big band recording. With “Out Here”, a 2014 release, Christian’s fifth recording on Mack Avenue Records, McBride introduced his latest working group: a trio, fully embracing at age 41 his role as standard-bearer and mentor. Pianist Christian Sands and drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr.—both younger, emerging artists—have been performing with McBride’s smallest group for about three years, honing their trio conception to a fine point of expressive depth and nuance with select performances around the world we are very glad to be able to present this ensemble to Central Pa’s avid jazz audience. . CPFJ thanks the Shearer Family Fund of The Foundation For Enhancing Communities, on behalf of Scott Shearer, for funding our Spring Concert series! 4 Christian McBride Trio CHRISTIAN SANDS - piano: Christian Sands is an emerging jazz force. A Steinway Artist, he takes a fresh look at the entire language of jazz: stride, swing, bebop, progressive, fusion, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban. Born May 22, 1989, Christian possessed an insatiable appetite for music, enrolling in music classes at age 4 and writing his first composition at age 5. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Manhattan School of Music. His meteoric rise in the jazz world already includes two appearances at the 2006 and 2007 Grammy Awards, including a, highly publicized duet with legendary pianist Oscar Peterson. At the young age of 20 he received two GRAMMY Nominations for Best Latin Jazz Piano Solo, and Best Latin Jazz Album for his performance on Bobby Sanabria’s “Kenya Revisited”. He is the protégé of Dr. Billy Taylor and was performed with him several times at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Following in his mentor’s footsteps he encourages, inspires and advocates for the preservation and history of Jazz. He has shared the stage with jazz luminaries such as Wynton Marsalis, Stefon Harris, Lou Donaldson, James Moody, Patti Austin, and Wycliffe Gordon to name a few. On his four CDs, Footprints (which was recorded when he was 12), Harmonia, Risin’, and Furioso, he demonstrates his skills as a composer, arranger, and producer. Christian has a firm grasp on the jazz culture and was named one of Jazz’s future rising stars in “Jet Magazine” by Wynton Marsalis. . ULYSSES OWENS, JR. - drums: Ulysses Owens Jr. is an artist “who takes a backseat to no one” (The New York Times), a label that seemingly describes his remarkable ascent as one of today’s premier drummers, or perhaps, his evolution as a producer, composer, educator, and entrepreneur. Ulysses is steadily establishing himself as a leader in his generation of jazz artists, admired for his sensitive, fiery, and complex playing, vivid display of textural nuance, and gift for propelling a band with charisma and integrity. Both humble in person and imposing behind a kit, Owens is a two-time Grammy® Award winner who has earned his stripes as a member of bassist Christian McBride’s acclaimed trio and the driving force of McBride’s famed big band. His own 2009 debut recording “It's Time For U” featured several original compositions and arrangements. In 2012, he released a second album, “Unanimous” (Criss Cross Jazz), featuring Christian McBride, Nicholas Payton, and Christian Sands. In 2010, Ulysses received his first Grammy® for his performance on Kurt Elling's "Dedicated To You," and his second Grammy® for the Christian McBride Big Band album, "The Good Feeling." He has toured and recorded with Wynton Marsalis, Kurt Elling, Diane Schuur, Renee Fleming, Monty Alexander, Terence Blanchard, and Mulgrew Miller. This year marks the release of two new albums as a leader: his third album, “Onward and Upward;” and “Time is Now,” the debut album of New Century Jazz Quintet, co-led with Takeshi Obayashi for the Japanese label, Spice Of Life. In 2008, Owens and his family founded the non-for-profit organization Don’t Miss a Beat, Inc. in his home town of Jacksonville, Florida, with the mission of combining music and art with a focus on academic achievement, civic engagement, and empowering inner city students to strive for their dreams. The opening band for our March 1st Spring Series Concert comes from the INSPIRE STUDIO OF THE ARTS (York, Pa). The group will play a set beginning at 5pm and Christian McBride will perform two sets beginning at 6p.m. Come early and enjoy these talented young players. . FINGERS! There is no tuition fee and all applicants are accepted. Please contact Mr. Waters at (717) 432-3109 or via email [email protected] - all young musicians with an interest in learning to improvise are welcome. Our continuing dedication to jazz education led to the creation of the CPFJ Youth Band over 25 years ago. Mr. Waters is a professional arranger, composer and trumpet player and the band is open to all school age musicians - grade school through high school. Mr. Waters prepares arrangements to suit the particular talents of the participants each year. All applicants are accepted without audition - Mr. Waters finds a niche for every instrumentalist and vocalist. The band’s rehearsals and concerts are scheduled year round including performances at the Central PA Jazz Festival, Jazz Picnic, and many other events. Not only do the students get wonderful experience playing in an improvising ensemble, but they get to meet kids from other schools who have the same interest in jazz. This ensemble offers a different experience than most High School Jazz Ensembles - it is not a place where the students simply read the notes on the page - all members learn to improvise and get valuable experience playing jazz standards and original music in a group setting. The Youth Band is also not restricted to the traditional big band instrumentation (trumpets, trombones, saxes & rhythm section) - all instruments are welcome - we have had almost every imaginable instrument….cello, accordion, oboe, flute, etc. in past bands. The Youth Band plays all of our festivals and major events as well as many civic functions and concerts - come join the fun!! Steve began his career during the seventies, in his hometown of Pittsburgh, following the straight ahead path blazed by his first major influence, Milt Jackson. After a year with guitarist Grant Green he was playing and recording with his Rutgers professors James Spaulding and Kenny Barron, before landing a spot in David "Fathead” Newman's quintet. Throughout the eighties Nelson was the vibist of choice among some of his generation's most talented jazz artists, including Bobby Watson, Curtis Lundy, James Williams, Mulgrew Miller, Donald Brown, Geoffrey Keezer and Lewis Nash, developing a harmonically open sound, influenced by the innovations of Bobby Hutcherson. These experiences led him to a spot in Dave Holland's award winning band and nine recordings. In between he's recorded a half dozen dates leader that showcase his own personal 819 as S.a Cameron St. 717-555-5555 voice on the vibes. There will be more information in the next issue of The ViBE!
