this started back in 1980. We will have some very special events and artists appearing this
year. Tim Warfield, CPFJ Music Chairman, has booked the upcoming 2015 Spring Concert
Series and Christian McBride will perform for us on March 1st at the Sheraton
Harrisburg/Hershey with his Trio. (see the story on pages 4/5) This is one of the best touring
groups in jazz right now and I really encourage you to make the effort to hear them - a “not
to be missed” event!! We congratulate Christian on his 2015 Grammy winning performance
as part of Chick Corea’s Trilogy CD - a triple CD set of live recordings from the tour with
Chick, Brian Blade and Christian - we are lucky to have him appearing in Central PA!
.
The new Wyndridge Farm event facility in Dallastown (near York) will be the site of our 2nd
Spring Concert on Sunday, April 12 . The featured artist is York, PA native Chris Bacas who
will return home from NYC and bring along his touring group, Voyage West. We look forward
to seeing and hearing Chris again in this exciting new venue. Wyndridge Farm has a
retaurant/tasting room, distillery and brewery, so plan to come early and enjoy their full menu
and drink offerings before or after the concerts. It’s a beautiful new property and we will host
the concert in the renovated barn - there will also be two shows, one at 3pm & one at 6:30pm,
so that those driving longer distances can do so in the daytime if they prefer. See the details in
this issue....
.
We will host the legendary vibraphonist Steve Nelson’s Quartet on May 31 at Rose Lehrman
Arts Center at Harrisburg Area Community Center. This exciting concert will close our
Spring Series and we thank The Shearer Family Fund, R. Scott Shearer for funding this series
for the fourth consecutive year.
.
Please look at page 8’s Membership Drive - we’re offering a grand prize drawing for $1,000 to
renewing or new members and chances for current members who recruit new members as
well.
.
If you would like to volunteer some time assisting at future CPFJ events, please contact our
volunteer coordinator, Leslie Beamer, at [email protected] or (717) 790-9672. We will
need volunteers for our upcoming concerts and promotional tasks. We also encourage local
businesses and individuals to donate funds to underwrite CPFJ events. If you are interested,
please contact the office at your convenience.
.
Check out the “Steady Gigs” & “One Time Only” pages in this issue - it is the most complete list
of Central PA jazz events available. We hope you will get out often to support the
establishments that are hosting live jazz and give a listen to our talented area jazz musicians there is a lot of great music happening right down the street and it will only continue to be
there if there is an audience. Get out often and listen!!
..
Our CPFJ Jam Sessions will continue at the new River City Blues Club on Cameron St. in
Harrisburg - sessions will be on Fourth Monday of every month from 7-10 p.m. Gullifty’s will
resume their Jam Sessions on the Second Wednesdays beginning February 11th. We hope to
see you at these events. It’s a great place for musicians to meet and share ideas and it is
always entertaining for the listeners.
.
Thanks to all who sent in support for our end of the year fund - your dollars allow us to
program great music that would never be presented in our area without CPFJ. Please take
advantage of the upcoming concerts to hear the finest jazz available anywhere.
.
We congratulate our Music Chairman Tim Warfield on his latest recording on the Criss Cross
Jazz label. Entitled “Spherical”, the CD is dedicated to the music of jazz legend Thelonious
Sphere Monk - it will be available February 17th - order several!
.
A note of congratulations to Pete Lazorcik, a drummer in our CPFJ Youth Band who won the
audition for the PA All-State Jazz Ensemble this year - he’s an excelllent young musician and
very deserving. He is also the son of our former Exec. Dir. Dave Lazorcik.
.
.
Thanks to all for your continuing support of CPFJ!

march 1st
5 p.m.
Join us as we kick off the 35th year of CPFJ with one
of the most influential musicians in jazz today - bassist
Christian McBride. He will bring his working Trio that
features two formidable young musicians - pianist
Christian Sands and drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr.
Tickets are available on page 15 of this issue or you may
purchase online at www.friendsofjazz .org or call the CPFJ
office at 717-540-1010
We will present the Trio in the Ballroom of the Sheraton Harrisburg-Hershey,
4650 Lindle Road, Harrisburg, PA. All seating is general admission.
Food and drink are available during the concert and there is ample free parking.
Bassist extraodinaire, composer, arranger, educator, curator and administrator, Christian McBride, has been one of
the most important and most omnipresent figures in the jazz world for 20 years. Sometimes hard to believe considering
this man is just 41 years of age. Beginning in 1989, this Philadelphia-born bassist moved to New York City to further
his classical studies at the Juilliard School, only to be snatched up by alto saxophonist, Bobby Watson. Since then,
McBride's list of accomplishments have been nothing short of staggering. As a sideman in the jazz world alone, he's
worked with the best of the very best - Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Rollins, J.J. Johnson, Ray Brown, Milt Jackson, McCoy
Tyner, Roy Haynes, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Pat Metheny. In the R&B world, he's not only played with, but
also arranged for Isaac Hayes, Chaka Khan, Natalie Cole, Lalah Hathaway, and the one and only Godfather of Soul
himself, James Brown. In the pop/rock world, he's extensively collaborated with Sting, Carly Simon, Don Henley, and
Bruce Hornsby. In the hip-hop/neo-soul world, he's collaborated with the Roots, D'Angelo, and Queen Latifah. In
many other specialty projects, he's worked closely with opera legend Kathleen Battle, bass virtuoso Edgar Meyer, the
Shanghai Quartet and the Sonus Quartet.
.
Away from the bass, Christian has become quite an astute and respected spokesperson for the music. In 1997, he spoke
on former President Bill Clinton's town hall meeting "Racism in the Performing Arts". He has served as Artistic Director
of the Jazz Aspen Snowmass Summer Sessions; co-director of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem; and 2nd Chair for
Creative Chair for Jazz of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association.
.
Since 2000, McBride has blazed a trail as a bandleader with the Christian McBride Band. He has released two critically
acclaimed CD's with that first group and in 2009 was signed to the Mack Avenue Records label where he recorded his
quintet CD "Christian McBride & Inside Straight" . His second release on the label was "Conversations with Christian"
a recording of duets with McBride and some of his best friends and mentors - George Duke, Angelique Kidjo, Dr. Billy
Taylor, Hank Jones, Chick Corea, Eddie Palmieri, Regina Carter, Ron Blake, Roy Hargrove, and Russell Malone.
.
In a stellar career that continues to showcase his remarkable talents as a consummate musician, bassist Christian
reached another milestone with the 2011 release of The Good Feeling, his first big band recording. With “Out Here”, a
2014 release, Christian’s fifth recording on Mack Avenue Records, McBride introduced his latest working group: a trio,
fully embracing at age 41 his role as standard-bearer and mentor. Pianist Christian Sands and drummer Ulysses Owens,
Jr.—both younger, emerging artists—have been performing with McBride’s smallest group for about three years,
honing their trio conception to a fine point of expressive depth and nuance with select performances around the world we are very glad to be able to present this ensemble to Central Pa’s avid jazz audience.
.
CPFJ thanks the Shearer Family Fund of The Foundation For Enhancing Communities, on behalf of Scott Shearer, for funding our Spring Concert series!

Christian McBride Trio
CHRISTIAN SANDS - piano:
Christian Sands is an emerging jazz force. A Steinway Artist, he takes a fresh look at the
entire language of jazz: stride, swing, bebop, progressive, fusion, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban.
Born May 22, 1989, Christian possessed an insatiable appetite for music, enrolling in music
classes at age 4 and writing his first composition at age 5. He received his Bachelor of Arts
Degree from Manhattan School of Music. His meteoric rise in the jazz world already includes
two appearances at the 2006 and 2007 Grammy Awards, including a, highly publicized duet
with legendary pianist Oscar Peterson. At the young age of 20 he received two GRAMMY
Nominations for Best Latin Jazz Piano Solo, and Best Latin Jazz Album for his performance
on Bobby Sanabria’s “Kenya Revisited”. He is the protégé of Dr. Billy Taylor and was performed with him several times at the
Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Following in his mentor’s footsteps he encourages, inspires and advocates for the
preservation and history of Jazz. He has shared the stage with jazz luminaries such as Wynton Marsalis, Stefon Harris, Lou
Donaldson, James Moody, Patti Austin, and Wycliffe Gordon to name a few. On his four CDs, Footprints (which was recorded
when he was 12), Harmonia, Risin’, and Furioso, he demonstrates his skills as a composer, arranger, and producer. Christian
has a firm grasp on the jazz culture and was named one of Jazz’s future rising stars in “Jet Magazine” by Wynton Marsalis.
.
ULYSSES OWENS, JR. - drums:
Ulysses Owens Jr. is an artist “who takes a backseat to no one” (The New York Times), a label that seemingly
describes his remarkable ascent as one of today’s premier drummers, or perhaps, his evolution as a
producer, composer, educator, and entrepreneur. Ulysses is steadily establishing himself as a leader in his
generation of jazz artists, admired for his sensitive, fiery, and complex playing, vivid display of textural
nuance, and gift for propelling a band with charisma and integrity. Both humble in person and imposing behind
a kit, Owens is a two-time Grammy® Award winner who has earned his stripes as a member of bassist
Christian McBride’s acclaimed trio and the driving force of McBride’s famed big band. His own 2009 debut
recording “It's Time For U” featured several original compositions and arrangements. In 2012, he released a
second album, “Unanimous” (Criss Cross Jazz), featuring Christian McBride, Nicholas Payton, and Christian
Sands. In 2010, Ulysses received his first Grammy® for his performance on Kurt Elling's "Dedicated To You,"
and his second Grammy® for the Christian McBride Big Band album, "The Good Feeling." He has toured and recorded with
Wynton Marsalis, Kurt Elling, Diane Schuur, Renee Fleming, Monty Alexander, Terence Blanchard, and Mulgrew Miller. This
year marks the release of two new albums as a leader: his third album, “Onward and Upward;” and “Time is Now,” the debut
album of New Century Jazz Quintet, co-led with Takeshi Obayashi for the Japanese label, Spice Of Life. In 2008, Owens and
his family founded the non-for-profit organization Don’t Miss a Beat, Inc. in his home town of Jacksonville, Florida, with the
mission of combining music and art with a focus on academic achievement, civic engagement, and empowering inner city
students to strive for their dreams.
The opening band for our March 1st Spring Series Concert comes from the INSPIRE STUDIO
OF THE ARTS (York, Pa). The group will play a set beginning at 5pm and Christian McBride
will perform two sets beginning at 6p.m. Come early and enjoy these talented young players.

.
The Central PA Friends of Jazz has been the jazz service organization in our area since 1980. CPFJ has
produced concerts and jazz festivals featuring world renowned jazz musicians, helped to promote our own
talented area artists, and provided educational opportunities for our aspiring young jazz artists and listeners
of all ages. You have probably had many memorable experiences at our concerts and festivals throughout the
years. In just the past year alone, we have brought you pianist Cyrus Chestnut and his tribute to Dave
Brubeck, rising star vocalist Cecile McLorin Salvant, and organist Joey DeFrancesco as well as many other
inspiring artists.
.
Our membership is the life blood of our organization and has been growing steadily during the past few years.
We need to sustain our efforts to promote jazz in Central PA in the years to come and attract new folks to
CPFJ! We believe the surest resource we have to accomplish this is our loyal enthusiastic membership and
the avid jazz fans in Central PA. We are confident that there are many jazz aficionados who just need a nudge
to re-join or become a brand new member. We encourage our current membership to seek out new members
and convince their friends to renew - you may be rewarded with the grand prize just for referring a new or
renewing member!
.
So don't delay, the Spring Concert Series is rapidly approaching – March 1st we will feature bassist Christian
McBride and his Trio - April 12th saxophonist Chris Bacas brings his NYC Quintet. Use the form in this issue

SUNDAY, APRIL 12, 2015
2 SHOWS - 3p.m. & 6:30p.m.
Spring Concert Series
Wyndridge Farm
885 South Pleasant Ave., Dallastown PA 17313
Chris Bacas, a York PA native, will bring his touring group from the city featuring vibraphonist Stefan Bauer and a vocalist
to perform for CPFJ for the first time. The venue is also a new one for CPFJ and the first in the York area - Wyndrige Farm where we will host the concert in the renovated barn of the facility. This is a beautiful new event center with a Restaurant,
tasting room, distillery and brewery that should prove to be a great spot for CPFJ concerts. We will do two shows in the
facility - one at 3pm and one at 6:30p.m. - so that those who are driving long distances can choose to do so in daylight hours.
When ordering tickets, be sure you check the concert time. There is a tasting room with a full menu, so plan to come before
the shows to savor their excellent food and drink menus.
.
Chris began his musical career at age fifteen as a sideman with a club band in York, PA, and after attending North Texas State,
Chris played in the Glen Miller Band (1983), The Tommy Dorsey Band, the Artie Shaw Band, and Buddy Rich's legendary Big
Band until Rich's passing in 1987. Over the past twenty years, Chris has appeared at festivals all over the world, including the
Nice, North Sea, Cork, Santiago, Montreal, Moers, Texaco, Annapolis, JVC New York, and Central PA Jazz Festivals. He has
performed in Copenhagen at the Tivoli Gardens; in Los Angeles at The Hollywood Bowl and LA's Comedy Store; in New York's
Blue Note and Birdland; Berlin's A-Train, Chicago's Jazz Showcase; and in Washington D.C. at Blues Alley and One Step Down.
Chris was a member of and recorded with the Smithsonian's Jazz Masterworks Orchestra under conductors David Baker and
Gunther Schuller. In 1999 Chris was soloist in the Mary Lou Williams' "Mass" at the National Cathedral with Marian
McPartland. Since 1989, Chris has appeared on over fifty recordings, including three ("Two Choices," "Leave a Message," and
"Exits") as leader/co-leader. Since moving to Brooklyn, NY, in 1999, Chris has performed and recorded with Stefan Bauer and
Voyage, J.C. Sanford Orchestra, Turks Head Knot, and Triocracy. 2014 releases include "Geographia" with Voyage and "Views
from the Inside" with the JC Sanford Orchestra.
We hope you will take the drive to hear Chris’ band and visit this amazing new facility!

JOIN THE CENTRAL PA YOUTH JAZZ BAND
Ron Waters is leading rehearsals for the CPFJ Youth Band.
There is no tuition fee and all applicants are accepted.
Please contact Mr. Waters at (717) 432-3109 or via email
[email protected] - all young musicians with an interest in
learning to improvise are welcome. Our continuing dedication to jazz
education led to the creation of the CPFJ Youth Band over 25 years ago.
Mr. Waters is a professional arranger, composer and trumpet
player and the band is open to all school age musicians - grade school
through high school. Mr. Waters prepares arrangements to suit the
particular talents of the participants each year. All applicants are
accepted without audition - Mr. Waters finds a niche for every
instrumentalist and vocalist. The band’s rehearsals and concerts are
scheduled year round including performances at the Central PA
Jazz Festival, Jazz Picnic, and many other events. Not only do the students get wonderful experience playing in an improvising
ensemble, but they get to meet kids from other schools who have the same interest in jazz. This ensemble offers a different
experience than most High School Jazz Ensembles - it is not a place where the students simply read the notes on the page - all
members learn to improvise and get valuable experience playing jazz standards and original music in a group setting. The Youth
Band is also not restricted to the traditional big band instrumentation (trumpets, trombones, saxes & rhythm section) - all
instruments are welcome - we have had almost every imaginable instrument….cello, accordion, oboe, flute, etc. in past bands.
The Youth Band plays all of our festivals and major events as well as many civic functions and concerts - come join the fun!!
CENTRAL PA JAZZ CAMP @ MESSIAH COLLEGE
JUNE 17-19, 2015

Please tell your young friends about the Camp and encourage them to attend. All students aged 10 to 21
with a desire to learn to improvise or improve their skills are welcome. There is a free concert on June 19th
with all faculty and students participating. Our thanks to Dr. Bill Stowman and the staff at Messiah College
for welcoming us to the campus again this year, our 14th Annual Central PA Jazz Camp! More info at our website.

Steve Nelson
Quartet
Sunday, May 31
3pm
The final Spring Series Concert this season will
feature vibraphonist Steve Nelson and his Quartet.
Steve began his career during the seventies, in his
hometown of Pittsburgh, following the straight
ahead path blazed by his first major influence, Milt
Jackson. After a year with guitarist Grant Green he
