CONTEMPORARY
GALLERY
2D/3D: Paintings
by Keith Mayerson,
Sculpture by
Kent Henricksen
This two-person exhibition,
organized by Elaine Berger for the
museum’s Contemporary Collectors
Circle, features painter Keith
Mayerson and sculptor Kent
Henricksen.
FOR US THE LIVING
THE CIVIL WAR
IN PAINTINGS BY
MORT KÜNSTLER
Sponsored by Mill-Max Mfg. Corp.
Additional support from Astoria Federal Savings
Mayerson’s paintings, seen in
many solo and group shows, have
been described as pop culture
narratives, as well as contemporary
icons. Kent Henricksen’s glazed
porcelains, some featuring text,
seek to focus on the interplay
between high and low culture. He
was the subject of a 2007
biography by art critic and curator
Bob Nickas.
“It is for us the living rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work
which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced.”
– Abraham Lincoln, Gettysburg Address, 1863
For Us the Living portrays the sights, feelings and drama of the Civil War. Considered by
many to be the leading contemporary painter of Civil War scenes, Mort Künstler’s work
is esteemed for its dramatic intensity and for an extraordinary level of authenticity that
results from intensive research. The exhibition consists of approximately 50 paintings
and is accompanied by a selection of documentary objects including a first-time-ever
look into Künstler’s creative process through sketches, drawings, preliminary studies,
photographs and props.

Mort Künstler Speaks:
A Conversation with the Artist
Paintings by the multitalented artist Burt
Young will be on display in the Library
Gallery during September and October.
Best known for his Academy Awardnominated portrayal of Paulie in the
Rocky films, Young is also an
established painter whose art has been
displayed in galleries throughout the
world. Young has authored stage and
screen plays and an historical novel,
Endings.
Sunday, October 17 at 4:30 p.m.
Mort Künstler, whose Civil War paintings are currently on view in
For Us the Living, discusses his work and the creative process
he employs to produce paintings. His dramatic works of art
achieve such historical accuracy that historian James
McPherson wrote “….none capture the human element, the
aura of leadership, the sense of being there and sharing in the
drama quite like Mort Künstler.”
Admission is $15 (nonmembers, $25) and includes admission to the museum.
Reservations required. Register at nassaumuseum.org/events.

Milton Avery and the
End of Modernism
January 22, 2011
through May 8, 2011
The exhibition examines the
contributions of Milton Avery as a
significant figurative painter from the late
1920s through the early 1960s. This
project places Avery’s work within a long
history of modernist practice, which
recognizes the artist’s sketch as a
finished work.

Visit Our New Grace’s Café
Grace’s Marketplace, long a favorite of the Upper East Side’s
most discerning food shoppers and now a mecca for fine
food on the North Shore, has launched Grace’s Café at the
museum, providing our patrons with tempting luncheon
choices including sandwiches, salads, soup, light fare and, for the first time, a
special menu for children.
For more than 25 years, the Doria family, owner and operator of Grace’s
Marketplace, has built a reputation for the highest standards of quality foods and
customer service. We welcome the Doria family to the Museum family.
Have your next museum visit include a delightful lunch at Grace’s Café. To

CONTEMPORARY COLLECTORS CIRCLE
Contemporary Collectors Circle (CCC) is a
magnet for people with a passion for
contemporary art. Through its fundraising
activities CCC members have added two
spectacular works to the Sculpture Park’s
permanent collection: Tom Otterness’ Free
Money and Manolo Valdes’ Regina 1.
Under the leadership of Elaine Berger and Carol Wolowitz, CCC members meet and
socialize with art lovers at intriguing events open only to members and their guests.
This past spring the group visited the Flag Art Foundation and the ArtHamptons Art
Fair. Coming up on October 13 is a visit to NYC’s Museum of Arts and Design.
Museum members at the Supporting level ($150 and up) are eligible to join the
Contemporary Collectors Circle for an annual $200 membership fee which is used
to purchase contemporary art for the museum’s collection. To find out about this
interesting group of art lovers and to join in their behind-the-scenes art tours, call
the membership department at (516) 484-9338, ext. 23 or log onto
nassaumuseum.com/membership.

EDUCATION
NCMA Launches Groundbreaking Program
Using Visual Arts to Promote Literacy
Over the past year, our education department has worked in close partnership with
Queensborough Community College (QCC) to develop strategies that use the visual
arts to assist non-English speaking adults achieve English literacy. The result is the
CALTA (Culture and Literacy through Art) Institute which was launched at a four-day
workshop this summer. According to the American Association of Museums (AAM)
this program positions NCMA as “a key player in helping ease the transition of new
immigrants into their American communities.” The NCMA/QCC collaboration is one
of only a handful of initiatives nationwide cited by AAM. This program has been
made possible through a grant from the Institute for Museums and Library Services.

Educator Jean Henning.
Museum Director Karl Emil Willers, Ph.D. opened the CALTA Institute by informing
participants that they are involved in creating a national model that partners art
museums with community colleges to teach English to adult immigrants. NCMA’s
director of educator, Patricia Lannes said that AAM’s Center for the Future of
Museums has identified the CALTA project as one that is addressing the prediction
that minorities will be the majority of the U.S. population by 2050. She said “this
project will allow us to use museums and art as catalysts for English language
development and personal empowerment of the immigrant community.”
