with stunning collections and has been home to the
Hope Family since the late 1600s, with the present
Lord Hopetoun and his family still living in the

We have disabled access to our shop, exhibition
and bar. The majority of the tour route is accessible,
minus the fermentation room (which can be
avoided for disabled visitors). Please notify us if

Inside one of the most spectacular ruins in
Scotland you cannot help but walk in the footsteps
of royalty. This royal pleasure palace was the
birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. Visit the Great
Hall where monarchs hosted banquets, or tour
James IV’s suite of chambers. The high towers look
down over the palace’s grounds – the Peel – and
Linlithgow Loch, a beautiful setting for wildlife.

airfield and explore the history of aviation from
the First World War to the present day. Fill your
day with interactive exhibitions, supersonic
experiences and historic hangars. Explore the site
on foot or jump aboard the Airfield Explorer to tour
our hangars and discover more than 50 aircrafts,
including the chance to climb on board Scotland’s

Ascend Tantallon’s towers for spectacular views
of the Bass Rock to watch gannets plunge into the
North Sea. The castle was home to the powerful
Red Douglas dynasty, which often clashed with
the Crown. It was besieged by both James IV and
James V but was ultimately destroyed by Oliver
Cromwell’s troops in a siege in 1561.

Originally a medieval Cistercian monastery,
Newbattle Abbey has a 900-year history of
welcoming royalty and privileged guests. This
unique, historic building offers private dining
for up to 88, guided tours and meeting rooms.
Magnificent function rooms, all with views of
the surrounding grounds, showcase the finest
craftsmanship. The grand Drawing Room’s ornate
fresco ceiling is a breath-taking example of the
work of Edinburgh architect, Thomas Bonnar.
During a private guided tour of Newbattle Abbey
find out how Scotland’s future was shaped when
the Declaration of Abroath was drafted here, as
well as the font in the Chapel believed to have been
used to baptise Mary Queen of Scots.
With its distinctive Dutch style conical roof this was
East Lothian’s last working water mill. A short walk
from the mill reveals another unusual structure –
the beehive shaped Phantassie Doocot built in the
16th century to house 500 pigeons. Exhibition on
milling life where you can find out what life was like
for the Miller and his family, interactive displays,
shop and scenic walks.
Dunbar Leisure Pool is the ultimate centre for
aquatic fun in East Lothian! The 25m swimming
pool has a beached area, wave machine, flume

Crichton Castle has been home to medieval lords
and Renaissance noblemen. Its sturdy tower of
the late 1300s stands by a sophisticated façade
created 200 years later. Crichton was besieged
several times and hosted a spectacular society
wedding attended by Mary Queen of Scots. The
Castles ruins, framed by a secluded valley were
celebrated by writer Walter Scott and artist
J.M.W Turner.
Prestongrange is a site of major importance in the
story of Scotland’s Industrial Revolution. Visitors
can discover the story of the harbour, glass works,
pottery, colliery and brickworks. A Cornish Beam
Engine is available to visit via a guided tour. The
Visitor Centre includes an exhibition area, shop and
café. Prestongrange is a family-friendly site, with
an indoor play area for children, trail sheets and
outdoor games.

at the Castle.
Step inside a largely intact medieval castle whose
doughty defences once guarded the Firth of
Forth. Known as the “The Ship that Never Sailed”
because of its boat-like shape, Blackness Castle
was built in the 1400s for Sir George Crichton,
Admiral of Scotland. Outside you can picnic in its
grounds, enjoy remarkable views and explore the
rocky foreshore.

is very uneven and the parking area is made of
thick gravel and grass alongside.

Fine C14 parish church of cathedral proportions
only fully restored 40 years ago. Left partial
roofless ruin following Haddington’s long Siege
with English in C16, remarkable craftsmanship
using recycled materials has brought whole
beautiful, mediaeval building back into daily
use – as active church, venue for occasional
concerts, exhibitions, flower festivals and the
annual Martinmas Fair.
