Back then, the introduction of Burroughs adding machines simplified daily operations for hundreds of corporations. Today, our focus on payment systems related technologies and services has resulted in countless efficiencies for financial institutions and businesses alike who process check and cash transactions. 2 Burroughs Legacy William Seward Burroughs knew there had to be a better way. Many bankers, accountants, bookkeepers and brokers of his day complained about adding machine technology. There was a big problem—the machines often added incorrectly. For Burroughs, the solution to this problem lay in a new approach. He had to think in an innovative new direction. The Beginning Computer Technology Burroughs worked tirelessly, using his understanding of the financial marketplace to design a solution that was reliable, accurate, and fast. Gifted with a mechanical expertise, Burroughs developed a device that controlled the speed of the mechanism, thus assuring reliability of the results. After relentless testing, Burroughs was ready to go to market, and the American Arithmometer Company was born in 1886 in St. Louis, Missouri. The commitment to innovation and excellence began by the founder and namesake of Burroughs and its outgrowth companies has continued throughout the years. The Burroughs legacy is evident in a constant commitment to innovation and excellence spanning 100 years of product solutions used by the financial industry to propel business around the world. Burroughs Corporation was formed in 1953 pioneering digital computing while offering other diversified products, continuing its commitment to the financial sector. Building upon its culture of innovation and excellence in the 1960s, Burroughs introduced the world’s first “third generation” electronic data processing systems, which relied on integrated circuits, disk storage, and online terminals. These and other achievements established the Burroughs brand as a powerhouse in computing technology in the U.S. and abroad. In 1904, the company expanded, becoming Burroughs Adding Machine Company and subsequently moved its headquarters to Detroit, Michigan. Continuing the Burroughs commitment to solving client needs through innovation and excellence, the company developed market-leading calculator technology specifically designed for banking, insurance and railroad companies. This included retailers who required accurate calculating and tracking of business transactions. Nearly 50 years later, the Burroughs commitment to solving business challenges would lead to extensive pioneering efforts in computer technology. Recognized by the U.S. government as a leader in advancing technology throughout the 1970s, Burroughs was sponsored by the Advanced Research Projects Agency to work with the Rome Air Development Center (USAF) and the University of Illinois to develop technology for national space and defense programs. The culmination of these efforts resulted in the first multi-processing computer system technology improving business environments for many industries across the globe. Continuing its culture of ground-breaking, new technology development, the stage was set by the mid 1980s for the next phase of company evolution. In 1986, Burroughs Corporation and the Sperry Corporation merged to become Unisys Corporation. The merger of two Fortune 100 companies made Unisys the second largest computer company in the United States. What was begun by William Burroughs through his dedication to developing cutting-edge technology, created a company with 120,000 employees in over 100 countries and revenues exceeding 10 billion dollars. 3 Payment Processing Innovation In the 1950s, Burroughs Corporation worked with the Federal Reserve to pioneer magnetic ink (MICR) technology. By combining magnetic ink with reader-sorter hardware platforms, Burroughs continued its tradition of developing solutions that solve business problems. Standing upon a foundation of payment solutions expertise, Unisys quickly established itself as a market leader in check imaging platforms and fostered a culture of research and development, resulting in a wide range of check processing products for financial institutions worldwide. In 1989, Unisys installed the first high-speed Image Proof of Deposit system at Huntington Bank. The effort resulted in the first cash letter being created and sent by Huntington using an image-based workflow. By 1990, Unisys announced new features for its image systems, which would enable banks to produce account statements with check images. The Payment Systems group remained focused on product development. This direction transformed the way financial institutions processed checks through branch and frontcounter image capture solutions such as the industryleading, new generation scanner, the SmartSource. Adding to their solution set, the Payment Systems group introduced a variety of branch and retail solutions including a suite of printers, cash automation products, and intelligent safes. With Payment Systems group uniquely positioned to provide innovative technology for the financial industry for many years to come, the next exciting development occurred. In early 2010, the check and cash automation business was sold creating Burroughs Payment Systems, restoring the proud Burroughs name in the marketplace. Burroughs is committed to providing world-class image capture, cash automation and overall branch solutions to their clients. The Future Aware of its nearly 125 year history of innovation and excellence—inventing new technology and deploying breakthrough products for the financial payment processing industry, Burroughs Payment Systems is poised to advance to the next level.
